You've heard us discuss about Dark Arts before, but you'll have to listen to hear about how these barrels were selected and how they taste. We welcome Steven back the podcast. In this episode of the Distillery Nation Podcast, Ian Stirsman, the master distiller of Ross and Squibb (formerly MGP), shared his journey into the whiskey industry and discussed the evolution of the distillery from MGP to its current rebranded identity. Ian's path into whiskey was unexpected. He started as a process engineer at a paper mill before being recruited by MGP Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Working alongside experienced distillers like Greg Metz and Gordon Working, he learned the craft hands-on and eventually became master distiller—a dream job he didn't even know he was looking for. The rebrand from MGP to Ross and Squibb wasn't about attracting tourists. It was about honoring the distilling history in Lawrenceburg that goes back to 1847 with the Rossville Distillery and 1869 with the Squib Distillery. The MGP name, which came along in 2011, didn't reflect that long heritage. Ian explained the challenges of scaling up whiskey production, particularly maintaining quality and consistency as operations grow. From managing grain supplies to controlling fermentation and barrel aging at a large scale, every step requires attention to detail. He talked about the different maturation environments they use—various rickhouse styles and storage locations—to create different flavor profiles. Ross and Squibb holds a unique position in American whiskey. They supply whiskey to many craft distilleries while also making their own brands like Remus and Rossville Union. Ian emphasized they put the same care into every barrel, whether it's for their own brands or for customers. The conversation touched on today's whiskey market, where consumers are looking for quality products at fair prices. Ian stressed the importance of experimentation with different grains and processes, and the role sensory training plays in keeping quality high. His main advice? Make whiskey you love and hope others will enjoy it too. Don't just chase trends—stay true to your vision.
Have you ever wondered how all these brands get into a bottle without owning a multi-million dollar distillery? We've talked about sourcing before but that's just one part of the puzzle. In this episode, we're going to talk about that second step, co-packing. We're joined by Jeff Wuslich, he's the President of Cardinal Spirits and Cardinal Copacking, to break down what it takes to actually manufacture booze at scale. Jeff has a background in manufacturing and slowly became a cornerstone of the Indiana craft scene. Jeff also has their own brands they use to showcase their abilities and have relationships with powerhouses like MGP. One thing that interested me was RTDs and the explosion of the canned cocktail movement, but as Jeff will talk about there are some massive compliance headaches that come with them. If you've ever thought about starting your own label or just want to know how the industry actually moves behind the scenss, this one side you need to understand.. Show Notes: The journey of launching a spirits brand in Indiana Understanding the co-packing process and client communications The relationship with MGP and its effects on business Emerging trends in the spirits industry, including ready-to-drink options Compliance issues and industry regulations in co-packing Financial insights and pricing dynamics in co-packing Tips for aspiring distillers navigating the co-packing landscape Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief sits down with Clinton Dugan, co-founder and master blender of Short Barrel Bourbon out of Atlanta. Clinton dives into his approach to blending, barrel selection, and what it really takes to build a whiskey brand that stands out without chasing trends. This is a conversation rooted in patience, experience, and letting the whiskey speak louder than the label. The first half kicks off with Short Barrel's new four grain whiskey, a five year old blend pulling wheat bourbon from Green River Distilling Co. and rye bourbon from Wilderness Trail Distillery. Bottled at 94 proof and priced at a wallet friendly $39.99, this 30 barrel batch delivers exactly what you want in an everyday pour. Soft wheat sweetness leads the charge while the rye brings balance and spice, making this an easy drinking whiskey that quietly punches above its weight. Things turn up quickly with OZ Tyler, a bruiser clocking in at 138.8 proof after spending three years aging in the Atlanta heat. Distilled by Jacob Call, this pour is bold, loud, and unapologetic. Heat, barrel, and time collide to create a whiskey that demands respect and doesn't apologize for it. In the second half, the big men come out swinging with an Old Fourth 10 Year Old Bottled in Bond. The MGP distilled juice is rich and oily, coating the palate with sticky sweetness and layers of stone fruit and chocolate that linger long after the sip. It's a reminder of how elegant well aged whiskey can be when the blending is done right. To close it all out, Clinton pours their Tokaji cask finished rye, and it stops Big Chief in his tracks. Finished in Hungarian Tokaji dessert wine barrels, this rye brings a deep raisin funk right out front, followed by grape driven sweetness, sugar cookie silk, and a smooth, confident finish. Big Chief doesn't hesitate to put it on record, calling it the first whiskey on his list for Whiskey of the Year for 2026. Real talk, real whiskey, and big pours from start to finish. Pour something good and Take the Ride with Big Chief and Clinton Dugan on The Whiskey Trip.

Bourbon BarrALZ raises money through charity barrels benefiting the Alzheimer's Association. Recently, they teamed up with the folks at Barrel King to create a one of a kind blend for charity. The Barrel King X Bourbon BarrALZ collaboration is a blend of 12 year old high rye MGP and Green River Bourbon that was aged for almost 10 years. Coming in at 117.1 proof, this bourbon has some bold flavors that are sure to delight the senses. This blend also showcases some of the fantastic stuff that Barrel King can do. Bourbon BarrALZ provided the bottle to us to review and we are very thankful for that. However, it didn't impact our ability to give this an honest review. Spoiler alert: Anthony purchased his own bottle directly after recording this episode. --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@themashupkyJoin our community on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheMashUpBourbonPodcastPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!

message me: what did you take away from this episode? Ep 106 (http://ibit.ly/Re5V) Olivia Tierney on regional practice, COCE learning, and national policy#PhDMidwives #research #midwifery #regionalmidwifery #COCE #policy #governanceresearch link t.ly/qze7RA nursing student drawn to babies and family care doesn't always end up writing policy, but that's exactly where Olivia Tierney's path led. We sit down with the Senior Midwifery Advisor at the Commonwealth Chief Nursing and Midwifery Office to map a career that spans MGP caseloads, tertiary units, regional hospitals under flood and fire, and the long arc of a PhD that changed how she sees student learning and continuity of care.Olivia takes us inside the contrasts that shaped her practice: the intimacy of continuity models versus the shock of high-acuity tertiary care, the autonomy and breadth of regional shifts, and the logistics of transfers when roads close and distance is daily reality. She explains why continuity of care experience (COCE) lights a spark in students, how following women through pregnancy, birth and postnatal periods turns theory into grounded judgement, reflection, and confidence. Her research journey is frank and relatable: withdrawing, restarting, choosing supervisors who fit, sitting with uncertainty until the work clicks, and then using that evidence to improve how students learn across varied placements. We also explore what it means to lead from policy. Olivia argues for midwives at every decision table, translating lived practice into better guidelines, workforce planning and equitable access, especially for regional and remote communities. She shares how endorsed midwife pathways, prescribing shifts and smarter placement design can reduce attrition and keep midwives in roles that match their philosophy and scope. Through it all, she keeps a link to research, ensuring national decisions are tested against evidence and the realities of care.If you care about continuity, education that actually works, and policies that respect both women and the profession, you'll find both clarity and courage here. The stuff that actually makes a difference, sparks conversation and intuitively helps you progress your swing ability. Host Todd Ritter flies solo in this special episode, taking listeners on a journey through the latest bourbon news and a deep dive into whiskey history. With Jim out of town, Todd kicks off the first half by tackling a massive slate of industry updates before sampling a unique experimental whiskey. He covers the Lost Lantern "Scotch Lover's" Fall 2025 collection, the nationwide expansion of Wyoming Whiskey's "Buffalo Bill Cody," Jim Beam's new Harden's Creek trio (Mushroom, Beaver, and Owl), and Jack Daniel's Distillery Series #15, a "Sweet Mash" Tennessee Whiskey. Todd also details new releases from Chicken Cock and Town Branch, Buffalo Trace's 9 millionth barrel milestone, and the bombshell news that Kirin is exploring the sale of the Four Roses distillery. The segment features a deep dive into the 2025 Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC), highlighting the new 15-year-old Colonel E.H. Taylor Bottled in Bond and a formidable 142.8-proof George T. Stagg. The first tasting of the day is the Remus Master Distiller Experimental Series Number One from MGP. This 9-year-old, 107-proof bourbon was aged in lightly charred and heavily toasted Seguin Moreau barrels made from staves seasoned outdoors for 24 months. Todd finds a big vanilla nose with a "wine funkiness," fig, and dark baking spices. The palate proves "soft and velvety" with notes of toasted marshmallow, chocolate, a hint of red wine, and a sweet, spicy finish of candied pecan and allspice. For the second half, Todd unearths a true gem for history nerds: a complete reading of a 1909 essay by none other than Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr., titled "The Rule of the Regions." Discovered in the University of Kentucky archives, the essay provides a fascinating look into the mind of the bourbon pioneer. Taylor boldly declares Kentucky bourbon superior to Scotch and Irish whiskeys, attributing this to the "Rule of the Regions"—specifically, the paramount importance of Kentucky's unique limestone water. He discusses the industry's massive (for 1909) $180 million value, the evolution from primitive wooden stills to scientific copper distillation, and the superiority of Kentucky's dry, ascending-proof aging methods. Most notably, he champions the Bottled-in-Bond Act as the ultimate guarantee of quality and authenticity, a protection he notes that Scotland and Ireland unfortunately lack. To accompany this historic reading, Todd tastes the Oaklore Story Series Number 2, an Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish 4 Grain Bourbon. Hailing from Matthews, North Carolina, this 95-proof blend of 5-to-6-year-old bourbons (70% corn, 10% rye, 10% wheat, 10% malted barley) is finished for 12-18 months in sherry casks. The whiskey shows a ruby tinge and offers a nose of raisin, wine, caramel, and vanilla. The soft palate features notes of black cherry, cocoa, sherry-driven nuttiness, and sweet dark fruits. Send us a textBlack Diamond Bourbon combines innovative boxcar aging with a thoughtful blend of Middle West and MGP whiskeys to create a uniquely Appalachian expression that honors Ohio's coal mining heritage.• A bourbon that scores an impressive 15/18 on the Old Louisville Whiskey Company's barrel bottle breakdown scale• Mash bill of 71% corn, 24% rye, and 5% barley bottled at 103 proof• The only bourbon in America aged in railroad boxcars, creating unique temperature fluctuations• A blend of 5.5-year Middle West Spirits and 4.5-year MGP distillate• Flavor profile featuring vanilla, caramel corn, French toast, almond, and chocolate notes• Part of a larger mission to revitalize historic coal mining communities across Southeast Ohio• Available in five taproom locations: Nelsonville, Circleville, Marietta, Shawnee, and Greenfield• Developed in partnership with former MGP master blender Sam SchmetzlerIf you're in Ohio, pick up a bottle of Black Diamond Bourbon from your local OHLQ store. Come visit one of our five taprooms to experience our beers, cocktails, and the full spirit of Appalachian hospitality.Few things capture the essence of a region quite like its spirits, and Black Diamond Bourbon serves as a liquid love letter to Appalachian Ohio's coal mining heritage. This isn't just another craft bourbon—it's the centerpiece of a remarkable revitalization effort breathing new life into historic small towns across Southeast Ohio's former coal country. What sets Black Diamond apart is their revolutionary aging process. In partnership with the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway, they've transformed vintage railroad boxcars into "rolling rickhouses." These unique aging environments create natural temperature and humidity fluctuations that impart distinctive character to the whiskey. As the first and only bourbon in America aged this way, each sip connects you to both innovation and tradition. The liquid itself represents a thoughtful collaboration between regional distilleries. Blending 5.5-year-old Middle West Spirits bourbon with 4.5-year-old MGP distillate creates a 103-proof expression with a mash bill of 71% corn, 24% rye, and 5% barley. This combination delivers a sensory experience worthy of its 15/18 rating on the barrel bottle breakdown scale—notes of caramel corn and vanilla on the nose lead to a palate reminiscent of French toast with almond extract and cinnamon, finishing with touches of tropical fruit and chocolate.Behind Black Diamond stands a development group dedicated to creating gathering spaces in towns once powered by coal. From their distillery in Nelsonville to taprooms in Circleville, Marietta, Shawnee, and Greenfield, each location preserves historic structures while generating economic opportunities for locals. The Black Diamond Tavern in Shawnee exemplifies this mission—housed in an 1877 building once crumbling into its basement, now restored as a community cornerstone featuring locally-sourced cuisine and an impressive whiskey selection.Whether you're a bourbon enthusiast seeking new experiences or someone who appreciates the intersection of craft spirits and community revival, Black Diamond offers something truly special. Find a bottle at your local Ohio liquor store or better yet, plan a visit to experience firsthand how this remarkable spirit is helping transform Appalachian Ohio, one pour at a time. You'd have to go all the way back to episode 17 to find the first time we ever tasted and reviewed anything from Nashville Barrel Company (NBC). Back then we could have never imagined that we would have our own barrel picks from NBC. Recently, Kenny took a trip down to Nashville and selected two Kelvin barrel MGP bourbons and one founders OG rye. Even though these were selected by Kenny, this episode marks the first time that we were able to get together to taste and review these. So join us this week as we talk about NBC and our recent picks from there. This week on Bourbon Lens, Jake and Scott dive into the wave of exciting whiskey releases that have dropped during the summer of 2025. From heritage distilleries to rising craft brands, the whiskey and bourbon world has been anything but quiet. We kick things off with Starlight Distillery's milestone 10-Year Bourbon, their oldest bourbon release to date and a major step forward for the Indiana distillery. Then, we explore Bardstown Bourbon Company's Hokkaido Release, a limited-edition Japanese oak-finished bourbon that showcases the brand's continued innovation and global partnerships. We also discuss MGP's Remus Babe Ruth Reserve, Peerless Toasted Barrel Rye Batch 2, and Frey Ranch Distillery's new 5 Grain Bourbon. Another release is Wheel Horse Barrel Proof, the bold new cask strength release that's grabbed our attention for its value and flavor punch. And we round things out with a discussion of Northern Liberties' debut bourbon — a 6-Year Bottled in Bond expression from the Cincinnati distillery. If you've been following our news section on BourbonLens.com, you've seen how these are just a few of the bottles which are setting the tone for the rest of the year. Pour a glass and join us as we recap the best of what summer has poured out so far.
