In this episode Amber takes us through her first pregnancy with the professional insight of ten years experience as a midwife. Determined to access continuity of care in a public hospital, she developed a beautiful sense of trust with her midwife, embraced birth preparation and actively planned her postpartum. When her hind waters started leaking she was devastated because she knew an induction was likely. Three days later her forewaters broke, induction began and she laboured beautifully all day but with the urge to push, her cervix became swollen and she requested an epidural. She was in theatre preparing for an emergency caesarean when the obstetrician confirmed she was fully dilated and baby Winter was born with forceps assistance. Unfortunately Amber knew she was at high risk for a postpartum haemorrhage but the severity of it left her very traumatised and significantly impacted her early breastfeeding experience. --------------------- Prepare for a positive birth experience with my new book .

Following on from Elise's first birth story in episode 208, today she shares her second pregnancy and birth with baby Bobby. Before she conceived, she experienced a prolapse for the first time and talks about the shock of it and the fear instilled by incorrect information. She finally sought professional guidance from a women's health physiotherapist who helped her realise that she's been doing her pelvic floor exercises incorrectly her entire life. Much like her first pregnancy, Elise intuitively knew when she would conceive and although her pregnancy was challenging - nausea, vomiting, insomnia and low immunity - she enjoyed the final weeks of the third trimester and decided at the last minute to have a home waterbirth. Elise is so generous in sharing her most vulnerable moments and reiterates the importance of trusted midwives to encourage and support you. --------------------- Prepare for a positive birth experience with my new book .

Old Louisville Whiskey Co. is a family owned business that strives to deliver premium whiskies to ALL. The husband and wife duo, Amine and Beth Karaoud, are self-proclaimed “whiskey aficionados'' and they have spent the last few years building a whiskey brand that honors both the rich history of the Old Louisville neighborhood as well as the long-standing tradition of Kentucky bourbon making. Old Louisville offers an array of unique whiskies. The one that we review this week is a single barrel pick from a very unusual MGP mashbill (51% corn / 49% malt). This week, Anthony is joined by a special guest host who was mentioned many episodes ago for chugging bourbon in a liquor store. We hope that you will listen along as we go through our standard shout outs, tasting notes, and other lively topics. You'll get to hear a first hand account of how this particular barrel of whiskey was selected from Old Louisville and what we think about it. Spoiler alert: You're gonna want to pay very close attention to what Old Louisville is doing in the future. Episode page with links, video, and more In Episode 39, Mark Graban and Jamie Flinchbaugh toast the completion of Mark's new book, The Mistakes That Make Us: Cultivating a Culture of Learning and Innovation (coming soon!). We also acknowledge Jamie's forthcoming podcast based on the book People Solve Problems. That's already plenty to cover before we even get into our whiskey. Our whiskey theme was sourced juice, or essentially whiskey producers that buy whiskey from other distillers. This practice takes many different forms. Jamie is drinking Holla Bourbon Whiskey, a 4 year wheated bourbon, while Mark is drinking The Senator Straight Rye Whiskey sourced from MGP. Holla Spirits is primarily a vodka company with an incredibly wide range of infused vodkas, from jalapeno to pickle to cotton candy. They use higher grade ethanol from either corn or cane. Our lean topic was CEOs who “go to the gemba,” specifically referencing recent Wall Street Journal articles featuring Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi driving an Uber and Starbucks brand-new CEO Laxman Narasimhan being trained and working as a barista. While there is a lot these articles don't tell you, we have to draw some conclusions about whether these efforts are well-intentioned or not. We didn't like the barista with gold cufflinks or the Uber driver ignoring important calls from his General Counsel. We did conclude that there are three dimensions to this practice to get right, and all three must be right for this practice to be worth the effort. First, you have to get the intention correct. Second, you must execute it with the right spirit and curiosity. Third, you have to do the right things with what you learn, not just fixing specific problems but challenging business model assumptions or improving major systems of how the company works. This spring we picked two delicious Bulliet single barrels. Bourbon World High Rye which is the "B" mashbill of 36% rye and the "1" yeast feautring a rich tropical fruit and leather profile. Given a 10-12yr age range for this one with only a 7 case yield. We also selected a Bourbon World "Fruit Bomb" with utilizes the "E" or 21% rye mashbill and the Number "2" yeast which gives the spirit a fruity aroma and creamy texture. This is the the 8-10 yr range. Since these are both much OLDER barrels than what the current Bulleit facility has been operating you can bet these are older MGP barrels. They are bottled at 104 proof, perfect for the mash and yeasts used. These are definitely higher quality single barrels than the current profile of the program itself, so take advantage a grab a few. They'll be incredible daily drinkers.

Tasting Notes A popular brand for over 150 years, Yellowstone has bounced around and been reborn six or seven times by different companies. In its current iteration, it's owned by MGP who bought Luxco this past year. It was reborn in the early part of the craft whiskey boom by Limestone Branch, a craft distillery operated by Stephen and Paul Beam. A Kentucky Bourbon, LIKELY sourced from Heaven Hill, but NOT confirmed the nose presents soft mint and honey with a caramel corn quality. On the palate, the whiskey is soft with buttercream and vanilla emerging before spice and a kick of sugared orange peel along with brown sugar and a touch of oak spice. It's a combo of 4 and 7 yr bourbons, I think MOST akin in flavor profile to regular Buffalo Trace, which is sometimes hard to get. Bottom line, soft, and sweet, but balanced with enough oak to stand up in a cocktail or a big rock

Tasting Notes: Juicy red fruit along with fat, sweet, and oily corn notes lead this extremely RARE bottle of bourbon. Selected by Perry Ford from experimental MGP stocks, there will never be another like this. 75% Crimson Red Corn, 21% rye, and 4% barley, aged 9yrs, bottled at 103 proof and finished in port barrels by Carindal for a year. Unlike some higher priced rarities from the past, THIS ONE HITS THE SPOT. Perfectly balanced MGP fruit with a dry corn and oak spice note that's juicy as hell

In this episode Kaitlin shares her experience with placenta previa. Her first pregnancy and birth was an incredibly positive experience and she birthed with the support of hospital midwives at her local birth centre. As soon as she discovered she was pregnant for the second time, she booked a private midwife but her plans for a homebirth changed at 20 weeks when an ultrasound showed her placenta was on the edge of her cervix. Kaitlin admits she was deeply disappointed but she informed herself, looked at all her options, prepared with The Birth Class and spoke to obstetricians to gain their advice. At 37 weeks when the placenta hadn't moved, she booked in at her local hospital. She went into spontaneous labour but when she started bleeding she went straight to hospital and had a very surprising birth experience. ___________ Have you heard the news? In today's episode, Meg shares her two positive inductions. She fell pregnant at 39 with her first baby yet her advanced maternal age (AMA) didn't affect her care options or her birth choices. She knew she wanted continuity of care and accessed the MGP programme at her local hospital alongside the support of a student midwife. Her induced labour was relatively quick but she admits that the second (pushing) stage was her greatest challenge. In her second pregnancy she embraced the lessons shared in The Birth Class and loved the guidance and direction of her midwife while birthing her baby. Meg's story is beautifully told and incredibly positive; a really great starting point if you're new to pregnancy and the podcast. ___________ Have you heard the news? Laura's story is unforgettable as she describes the healing power of birth with honesty and grace. She came to pregnancy with a history of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, PTSD and eating disorders that stemmed from childhood and adolescent sexual abuse. She has worked closely with her psychologist to work through her trauma but she admits that the final part of her journey was labour and birth; she considered it a powerful way to heal and connect with her body. She surrounded herself with supportive care providers, embraced birth education via The Birth Class and laboured beautifully at home before going to hospital and birthing her baby boy. As she says with immense gratitude: “It was a birth and a rebirth for me.” ___________ Have you heard the news? This episode is for all the women who have messaged me begging for a positive story about vaginal birth after a severe perineal tear. Here is all the inspiration (and information) you'll need! Diana shares her experience with a fourth-degree tear and details her shock when she was told that she had a recto-vaginal fistula. She admits that she did very little birth preparation and was happy to go with the flow but when it was time to birth her baby, she couldn't feel anything because of the epidural. Furthermore, her baby was born in one push. Diana's complications made for a physically and mentally challenging postpartum and motivated her to do things differently for her subsequent birth. Determined to embrace support and preparation, she worked closely with her doula and MGP midwife and had a physiological labour with perineal support that resulted in a small second-degree tear. ___________ Have you heard the news? Love it or hate it, spirit competitions are here to stay. They have such an important impact on marketing and can put a small shimmer of light on a new and upcoming brand, or it changes the course and turns a brand such as Henry McKenna into an unobtainable. In this episode, Fred Minnick and Kenny Coleman talk about multiple facets of spirits competitions because we have now lived it. We're both enthusiasts like you so we care what bourbons come out on top, Fred has been a judge forever and now has his own competition called the ASCOTs, and we have our own brand with Pursuit United that has been entered and done favorably in many competitions. Fred and I analyze all these angle about talk about the "pay to play" scenario and how people are selected to be judges along with the best way to enter a competition as a brand owner. Show Notes: Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about the meaning of allocation. Fred, how long have you been a part of spirit competitions? Why weren't media members typically invited to be judges? Why is this considered "pay to play"? Why is there so much confusion based on what category to submit when it's straight bourbon vs small batch? Why would a bourbon society enter a spirits competition? What makes someone worthy enough to be a judge at a competition? Should you put batch numbers on your competition entry or just the brand? Why does MGP always perform well in competitions? In today's episode Paige shares her birth experiences in Gladstone (population 60,000+) where the hospital is currently on bypass for all maternity patients. It's a huge issue and a prime example of the maternity system crisis (we're seeing similar situations in Geelong, Victoria and Burnie, Tasmania). She takes us through her two pregnancies and births, including her second where she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes but was educated enough to request a different treatment plan and avoid an induction. At 39 weeks she didn't know where she would birth - an unsettling feeling - and when her labour progressed quickly, she was supported to birth at Gladstone but knew she couldn't have pharmacological pain relief. Her birth was positive and empowering but five hours later she started haemorrhaging and was transferred via ambulance to Rockhampton hospital where she stayed for three days. -------------------------- It's here! In this episode Paige shares her incredibly positive first birth experience. If you are new to the podcast or feel like you want an encouraging story to inspire you, this is it. After conceiving easily, she started listening to the podcast and knew she wanted a continuity model of care. She contacted Canterbury Antenatal and Postnatal Services (CAPS) and was accepted into their programme. From there she listened to @the.birth.class on repeat and armed herself with knowledge and skills. Her labour started spontaneously and she stayed home till her waters broke. As she says: “Knowledge is power and the more you understand your options, feel like you can make choices and know that you're involved in the process, the more confident you'll be.” -------------------------- It's here! Tasting NotesThis "blended bourbon" is a combo of MGP 21% rye boubron, 95% rye, and 14yr old Light Whiskey, bottled at 110 proof. Nose is fresh fruit, cinnamon gum, and light vanilla. Palate is soft and sweet for 110 proof with apricot and juicy vanilla bean emerging. This is a FANTASTIC whiskey which would be really easy to dismiss. The older addition of Light Whiskey bends the flavor in such a rich and interesting way. Smooth and flavorful for days. This is a NOT TO BE MISSED whiskey, and what the future of innovation in this space should look like.

What is my favorite MGP bottle? What's the buzz with the new Jack Daniel's Bonded? Why use a whiskey decanter? These are just a few of the questions that I answer in this listener Q&A episode! If you'd like to have a question answered about whiskey, the podcast, or just my life/opinions/etc, you can submit it through my Instagram Story every Wednesday (@Whiskey_Noobs). Cheers!
In this episode I chat to Ariel from @blissbirth about her two birth experiences. A passionate advocate for TENS machines (she now has 1000 in circulation through her business), she explains how popular they are and how they help women navigate labour to achieve the births they want. In her first pregnancy she opted for continuity of care with her beloved midwife who advocated for her every step of the way. After a very long posterior labour, Ariel birthed her baby boy vaginally and despite a rocky start to breastfeeding, the nipple shield really worked for her. In her second birth she was introduced to the TENS machine and used it throughout to achieve a joyous physiological birth. Just 2 weeks left until my new book, The Complete Australian Guide to Pregnancy and Birth, is published. It covers everything you need as you journey through pregnancy and prepare for a positive birth experience. --> Pre-order it now.
If you listen to our Friday show called This Week in Bourbon, you would hear us talking about tequila being the next rising spirit. I mean, who doesn't like a good margarita? Much like bourbon, there is a lot to know about what goes into making the spirit. To help explain all that, we've invited Alfonso Esquivias, the Founder and Owner of Drinks with Fonz. Alfonso sent Ryan and I 12 different tequilas to sample them as we go through to know more about them. It was a lot of tequila but I promise you that I have a much deeper appreciation for tequila after this. Alfonso talks about the laws to be called a tequila and we dive into the process of harvesting agave and distilling it. We then tackle the touchy subject of how many tequilas on the market are full of additives like sugar and how you shouldn't trust many celebrity brands as well. Listen closely to the brands we talk about during the show so you know which ones are additive-free and legit. Show Notes: Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about the popularity of Buffalo Trace How did you get into spirits in general? What restrictions are in place to be called a tequila? Can you describe an agave plant? Can you explain the differences between blanco, reposado, and anejo? In bourbon you will never see anyone claim they like un-aged bourbon but why is that with tequila? How do you know which brands have additives? What are all tequilas in the 80-90 proof range? What is the typical proof off the still? Who is the MGP of tequila? So what makes something like Jose Cuervo mass-market or bottom shelf? Is saying "using tequila as a mixer" considered blasphemy? Does a particular agave field have different effect on the flavor like grapes with wine? How do you know when an agave plant is ready for harvesting? Does price point increase when proof increases? Do all celebrity tequilas have additives or are considered crap? @drinks.@with.@fonz Support this podcast on Patreon
