Few of us who have a keen interest in history and literature - particularly  Australian history and literature - will not have heard of Henry Lawson and his short story - 'The Drover's Wife'. First published in 1892, Lawson's story centres on an unnamed woman living in the outback, in an isolated hut, with her four children while her husband is away droving.   One day, she and the children spot a snake disappearing under the house.  To keep her children safe, she puts them to bed on top of the table and with her faithful snake-dog ‘Alligator', keeps vigil, waiting for  the snake to re-appear so she can kill it.  During the long dark hours of night, she reflects on her life in the time since her marriage to the drover - giving us a glimpse into the hardships endured by women like her; fighting against the elements, loneliness and other dangers in order to protect her family and home while her husband is away.  It's a story that's inspired several adaptations - including 'The Story Thief' by debut novelist Kyra Geddes. Published this year by Affirm Press 'The Story Thief' is a poignant, clever story that explores the space between fact and fiction through Lillian Taylor: a woman born in the very year Lawson published his much-celebrated story.  I was delighted to have the chance to chat with Kyra about her novel on the podcast recently.

It's me again, Hank, the Cowdog…is the opening line in every Hank book by John R. Erickson. This entertaining series about a comical canine who boastfully touts himself to be the Head of Ranch Security has become a favorite for all ages. Readers join Hank and his sidekick, Dover, while they relentlessly tease Bruno, the boxer, on their uninvited trip into town. When Bruno calls Hank a 2 bit cowdog,   Hank replies, “Do you mean that as an insult or a compliment?”    Back on the ranch, Hank is wrongfully accused and punished for a crime he did not commit, the lack of justice gnaws at his sense of fairplay until he decides to leave. Hank is a might conflicted because he knows Drover is afraid of his own shadow, his hands (er, paws) are less than capable for the job of Head of Ranch Security but Hank hits the outlaw trail anyway.  He meets a stuttering buzzard who thinks Hank is du-du-dead because of the chicken head Sally Mae had tied around Hank's neck in an effort to thwart his chicken killing habit. Let's be clear here, Hank ate a dead chicken, however, he was not the reason for her death, readers will discover the killing culprit in the book. Soon, our runaway Head of Ranch Security meets the first outlaw on the trail, a beautiful coyote named Missy. This encounter makes Hank's heart go pitter patter, love is in the air you might say! She takes ‘Hunk” home to meet her folks and as one might predict things begin to get dicey. The situation really heats up when Missy's  brother, Scraunch, challenges ‘chicken dog' to a battle! We get help in this podcast from the youngsters who  really enjoyed the different characters and the Me Just a Worthless Coyote song, and Drover's dry humor. Today we have a (Elara-has-had-too-much-coffee-and-dirt) podcast interview with Andrew Conroy, B.S., M.S., PhD, who is a two-time Fulbright Scholar, professor at the University of New Hampshire, and man who can claim way too many other accomplishments to mention here.  Dr. Conroy has wrote the book on oxen (Really.  He wrote more than one, and you can follow the link below to buy them for yourself).  On more than one continent, he is the guy that everyone mentions when someone wants to know more about how to hitch draft animals up to do something.  Please join Elara and Dr. Conroy as they talk about the good doctor's journey through a life in oxenland, and the joys of different breeds and places.  You'll have to imagine them surrounded by shady green pastures, with two curious Kerry Cattle and a very energetic young dog providing the background excitement.   Links:https://colsa.unh.edu/person/andrew-conroyhttps://www.amazon.com/s?k=drew+conroy&crid=7QKW74K109WD&sprefix=drew+conroy%2Caps%2C162&ref=nb_sb_nosshttps://fulbrightscholars.org/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chianinahttps://extension.umn.edu/planting-forages/alfalfa-establishment-steps-maximize-yield#field-selection-703010http://milkingdevons.org/ Support the show

THE LEGEND OF MOLLY JOHNSON drops us into Austrailia in 1893 on an isolated property, where a heavily pregnant woman named Molly Johnson (Leah Purcell) and her children struggle to survive the harsh Australian landscape; her husband is gone, droving sheep in the high country. Molly then finds herself confronted by a shackled Aboriginal fugitive named Yadaka (Rob Collins). As an unlikely bond begins to form between them, secrets unravel about her true identity. Meanwhile, realizing Molly's husband is missing, new town lawman Nate Clintoff becomes suspicious and sends his constable to investigate. The deadly encounter between Molly, Yadaka and the constable results in a tragic chain of events with Molly becoming a symbol of feminism and anti-racism. THE LEGEND OF MOLLY JOHNSON is a reimagining of Leah Purcell's acclaimed play and Henry Lawson's classic short story. Director, producer and co-screenwriter Leah Purcell joins us for a conversation on her searing Australian revenge tale and a stark revisionist Western, and a film that offers a powerful new interrogation of Australian history and a universal story of what a mother will do to protect her children. In the 93 year history of the Oscars, only seven women have been nominated in the Best Director category and just two have won. Ahead of this year's Academy Awards, Anu Anand talks to director Jane Campion and cinematographer Ari Wegner about their film The Power of the Dog. A Western set in 1920s Montana starring Benedict Cumberbatch, it has received 12 Oscar nominations – more than any other film this year and importantly, this includes history-making nominations for women in a very male-dominated film industry. Campion is now the first woman to have been nominated twice as Best Director – an otherwise all-male category – while Wegner is the only woman nominated as Best Cinematographer, only the second ever to be nominated. Dina Amer is an award-winning Egyptian-American journalist. She tells us about her debut film, You Resemble Me, which explores the troubled childhood and search for identity of a young French woman of Moroccan heritage, Hasna Aït Boulahcen, who was initially thought to be Europe's first female suicide bomber. And Australian actor, playwright, novelist and director Leah Purcell on her film The Drover's Wife: The Legend Of Molly Johnson. Set in the harsh Australian bush in 1893, Molly Johnson is desperate to keep her children safe at any cost and the film powerfully tackles themes of domestic violence and racism. The Drover's Wife was originally a short story by the 19th century writer Henry Lawson. Leah explains why this story had such an impact on her and why it was important to represent strong First Nations women in film. (Photo: Ari Wegner and Jane Campion. Credit: Netflix)
