Stephen Drover is Directing the Macbeth He's Been Thinking About for Twenty Years

Read transcriptAbout this episode: Stephen Drover has directed Macbeth before; twenty years ago, the day after it closed, he wanted to do it again. Now, as both adapter and director for Bard on the Beach in Vancouver, he's finally getting that chance. In this rich conversation, Stephen talks about approaching Shakespeare not as a sacred text to be served but as a living collaboration, asking not what the words inherently mean but what meaning is being created in this specific theatre, for this specific audience, right now. The conversation covers the challenge of stripping away cultural baggage around the witches, to building a post-environmental dystopia as the world of the play, to why Stephen leans into the brutal, blood-soaked reality of the play rather than sanitizing it for comfortable consumption. He also reflects on how becoming a parent has changed the way he receives Macbeth's deeply embedded anxieties about children and grief. This episode explores: Approaching Shakespeare as a collaborator rather than a proprietor — and what that means in practice for this production The concentric rings of Stephen's career: actor to director to artistic director to dramaturg How a late diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and ADHD illuminates why theatre suits his brain so well New play development at the Arts Club and the 'one size fits one' philosophy And much more! For 45 years, George Palmer harboured a secret. He spent every spare moment composing classical music, and then shoving his scores in his bottom drawer. Until one day, almost by pure chance, that music saw the light of day.As a young man, George had dreams of becoming a renowned classical music composer, but when he walked into university, he didn't feel like he belonged in the music department.George left after his first week, and followed a school friend into the law department. At first, George was not inspired by the law, but he ended up falling in love with the human side of the justice system. For the next 45 years, he climbed the ranks from barrister, to Queen's Counsel, and finally to judge in the NSW Supreme Court, where he had ultimate responsibility for all adoptions in the state. But through all those years in public life, George had a secret "vice".Every spare moment he had was spent at his piano, scribbling down choral works and orchestral scores that he never intended anyone to see or hear.He never spoke about composing with his colleagues, friends or family, until one day George's talents were uncovered through chance and tragedy.George's latest work The Drover's Wife - The Opera is playing at Brisbane's QPAC until 22 May, and then will be staged at Sydney's Opera House in August, 2026.This episode of Conversations was produced by Meggie Morris. A soft‑spoken reading of Elizabeth Bowen's “The Demon Lover,” a story that slips between memory, war‑time London, and the unsettling return of a promise made long ago. Mrs. Drover steps into her shuttered house for only a moment — but something is waiting for her, something that remembers her more clearly than she remembers herself. This recording leans into the story's quiet dread: the stillness of the empty street, the strange displacement of time, and the slow tightening of a past that refuses to stay buried. If you enjoy atmospheric narration, uncanny domestic spaces, and stories where the haunting is emotional as much as supernatural, you'll feel right at home. Thank you for listening and wandering into the eerie with me ❤️

It's me again, Hank, the Cowdog…is the opening line in every Hank book by John R. Erickson. This entertaining series about a comical canine who boastfully touts himself to be the Head of Ranch Security has become a favorite for all ages. Readers join Hank and his sidekick, Dover, while they relentlessly tease Bruno, the boxer, on their uninvited trip into town. When Bruno calls Hank a 2 bit cowdog,   Hank replies, “Do you mean that as an insult or a compliment?”    Back on the ranch, Hank is wrongfully accused and punished for a crime he did not commit, the lack of justice gnaws at his sense of fairplay until he decides to leave. Hank is a might conflicted because he knows Drover is afraid of his own shadow, his hands (er, paws) are less than capable for the job of Head of Ranch Security but Hank hits the outlaw trail anyway.  He meets a stuttering buzzard who thinks Hank is du-du-dead because of the chicken head Sally Mae had tied around Hank's neck in an effort to thwart his chicken killing habit. Let's be clear here, Hank ate a dead chicken, however, he was not the reason for her death, readers will discover the killing culprit in the book. Soon, our runaway Head of Ranch Security meets the first outlaw on the trail, a beautiful coyote named Missy. This encounter makes Hank's heart go pitter patter, love is in the air you might say! She takes ‘Hunk” home to meet her folks and as one might predict things begin to get dicey. The situation really heats up when Missy's  brother, Scraunch, challenges ‘chicken dog' to a battle! We get help in this podcast from the youngsters who  really enjoyed the different characters and the Me Just a Worthless Coyote song, and Drover's dry humor. If you are already a Hank fan or if you are excited to become one be sure and check out  hankthecowdog.com for cool games like Whack a Coyote, Ranch Memory, & Find Your Age in Dog Years-Yikes!
