Welcome to the LIVING FOR THE BOYLE review series! Daniel Francis Boyle originally hailed from Manchester, England and his filmmaking career took off thirty years ago in 1995 with the release of acclaimed cult thriller Shallow Grave. And ever since then, Danny Boyle (as he's officially known) has carved out a uniquely successful career not only achieving box office success several times but also winning a few Oscars along the way. During this time period, he has also become one of MY personal favorite directors, having helmed excellent ORIGINAL stories spanning several genres including children's fantasy, science fiction, crime drama, horror, and biopic. Over the next few months, I will be reviewing some of my favorite entries from his filmography in the lead-up to the long-awaited sequel to one of his more successful films….28 Years Later which will be released in the U.S. on June 20!From the Oscar-winning writer (Aaron Sorkin) of The Social Network comes another "Based Upon a True Story" exploration of one of the titans of the digital revolution, this time the titular Steve Jobs played by Oscar-nominee Michael Fassbender (Shame, Black Bag). This story takes behind the scenes in the lead-up to three VERY different product launches headlined by the eventual Apple CEO in 1984, 1988, and culminating in 1998 with the launch of the revoluationairy IMac computer for home and office use. Along the way, we not only learn about the various ups-and-downs of the Apple/Mac brand as overseen by Jobs but much of his personal drama as well, especially his tumultuous relationship with his daughter Lisa. This Oscar nominated drama was directed by Boyle and featured a stellar cast including Kate Winslet, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jeff Daniels, and Seth Rogen.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

A LOT of cash no doubt so Damian and his brother (Lewis McGibbon) embark on their own adventure trying to figure out EXACTLY what to do this with this new-found fortune....and what results is a delightful whimsical story involving (among many different things) the transition to the Euro, Mormon neighbors who can transport a LOT of appliances via bicycle, and one of our heroes getting to know all of the most well-known Catholic saints. It's a true original. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Military reporter Emanuel Fabian joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. The Saudi Al-Hadath channel reports that the US has transferred a second THAAD battery to Israel amid rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear program. The battery was apparently delivered yesterday. We hear what the THAAD, or Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System, is an advanced anti-missile system, has recently been used for. Yesterday, Hamas released a propaganda video that shows hostages Bar Kupershtein and Maxim Herkin, in the first sign of life from both of them since they were abducted by terrorists on October 7, 2023. We hear the broad-strokes contents of the video. The IDF has detailed the initial findings from its investigation into the killing of 14 rescue workers in southern Gaza’s Rafah on March 23, when soldiers opened fire on a convoy of ambulances after mistakenly identifying it as a threat and buried their bodies. Fabian explains the findings, and highlights still unanswered questions. The IDF released footage from the entry of the 36th Division into the so-called Morag Corridor, located between southern Gaza’s Rafah and Khan Younis, last week. It marks the first time since the beginning of the war that ground troops are operating in the area. On Thursday, Israel Defense Forces spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin told reporters that the IDF has entered a “new phase” in its fighting. What is this new phase that Defrin is referring to? Hassan Farhat, who had headed Hamas’s forces in the western sector of Lebanon, was killed in an airstrike on an apartment building in Sidon. Likewise, the IDF and Shin Bet on Friday said a terror operative who oversaw the kidnapping and likely was also involved in the murder of Shiri Bibas and her two young sons, Ariel and Kfir, was killed in an airstrike in Gaza. We learn about these two Hamas terrorists and Fabian connects the Sidon strike to an earlier strike on a Hezbollah operative in Beirut. Please see today's ongoing liveblog for more updates. This week we kick off the first ever No Tags film season! Based on an original idea by DJ and NTS host Finn, Big Beat Cinema is our attempt to identify and decode a much-loved and entirely made-up micro-genre.We begin by outlining the core canon and basic tropes of BBC, paying particular attention to the ultra-stylish heist movies of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s – think Ocean's Eleven, Mark Wahlberg's The Italian Job, Snatch and even The Matrix. We also try to explain why big beat – the sample-flipping, chart-dominating, Hawaiian shirt-wearing sound of the millennium – became so integral to these movies' portrayal of cool guys pulling off implausible heists. From zany editing to Junkie XL, from Paul Oakenfold to the politics of cool, and from Skint Records to the correct shade of denim, this first episode lays out the core principles of BBC.Let us know what you think in the comments – including on our Letterboxd list, where you can check out the full selection of BBC contenders, from Shallow Grave to Kneecap. When the bodies in the barrels were found, Australia was rocked. A murder investigation was underway, and forensics was set to play a huge part. But where to even begin? Professor Roger Byard AO had been working in forensics for just two weeks when he got the call. A set of barrels had been found in a bank vault, and he was needed at the scene. The investigation that followed was taxing on Roger, and the community in South Australia, but the work was meaningful and would lead to successful convictions and answers for families. Unpack this case and more with host Kathryn Fox, as Roger takes her through his career in forensics and beyond. If this content affected you, the number for Lifeline is 13 11 14. [School of Everything Else 2024] This is a special episode I've been planning for many years, ever since the notion that 'Horror' as we know it is largely a marketing construct, and that stories that deliberately jab at our Fear-response can be found pretty much everywhere. This is why I decided to go with my favourite metaphor; food) and hone in on the precept that Horror is not a story type, but a spice (or indeed a series of differently flavoured spices with differing properties) that can be sprinkled in lightly or ladled in heavily to produce wildly varying results. This would be why de facto Horror film series' like Friday the 13th don't frighten me in the slightest, but Shallow Grave, which would be classified as a Thriller in cinematic terms, chilled me to my core, and why the most frightening film I ever saw isn't in the Horror genre at all! We and our guests work our way up the scary Scoville Scale (the Screamville scale) to establish some genuinely thought-provoking new, fresh and flavourful perspectives, accompanied by some of the greatest and most spine-tingling movie music of all time!
Add Danny Boyle to the long list of British directors who claim their work is apolitical, seemingly only to distance themselves from Ken Loach and Mike Leigh. But it doesn't take the death of the author to find a political read of his brutal debut feature Shallow Grave (1994), a film about the corrupting influence of money on relationships, about how greed inherently leads to violence and even if you can convince yourself that your extractive profits have no victims, well, they soon will. Kerry Fox, Christopher Eccleston, and Ewan McGregor star as the victims of their own avarice in this fantastic film.
What did Vic Learn in the Shallow Grave? Special bonus podcast! Brian and Darryl are talking about “Inside Man” Episode 2 of the HBO Max original series The Penguin. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 The Penguin: 3.16 The Penguin (Max) Out of 5 How Many Mobsters Can Oz Betrays Darryl: 4.25/5 Brian: 4.51/5 Episode 2: Inside Man Plot Overview: The Penguin Episode 2, “Inside Man,” continues to explore Oswald Cobblepot's rise to power in Gotham's criminal underworld following the death of Carmine Falcone. Cobblepot faces numerous challenges as he works to consolidate his position as the new kingpin, facing off against established crime families, rogue elements within Gotham's police, and potential allies who could turn against him at any moment. The episode focuses on several key events: Cobblepot's Strategy: Oswald Cobblepot tries to make a power play to secure a critical advantage in Gotham's underground world. This involves reaching out to key figures within the city's organized crime structure, but these negotiations are fraught with betrayal, shifting loyalties, and mistrust. Internal Conflict: Cobblepot is constantly dealing with internal struggles, not only among his own people but also with his doubts and insecurities about whether he's truly prepared to take on the mantle of Gotham's most powerful figure. External Threats: Meanwhile, Cobblepot faces pressure from external threats. Rival crime bosses begin moving in on the territory, eager to exploit the void left by Falcone's death, and law enforcement continues to keep a close eye on his movements. The “Inside Man”: The title of the episode refers to a key plotline where Cobblepot attempts to plant a mole within a rival faction. This subplot is full of tension as alliances are tested and the consequences of being found out could prove fatal. Climax: The episode ends with a significant twist, highlighting the consequences of Cobblepot's choices and leaving viewers questioning whether he can hold onto his newfound power in the midst of growing opposition. Tune in as Arthur's pal Robyn Zabukovec pops back up on 2CC for a discussion on Shallow Grave, the 1994 thriller that follows an obnoxious trio of British flatmates who descend into paranoia after dealing with the corpse and the big bag of money that have fallen into their laps. The black comedy that this film manages to smoothly blend in with its suspense, appreciation for onscreen blood that avoids looking too fake, the time when the cops had caught Robyn jaywalking through a blizzard, and whether it's less painful to die from the heat or from the cold comprise just some of the talking points for this episode. Directed by Danny Boyle, Shallow Grave stars Ewan McGregor, Christopher Eccleston, Kerry Fox, Keith Allen, Ken Stott, Colin McCredie, Peter Mullan, Leonard O'Malley, Tony Curran, and John Hodge. Chris and i are on the mic this week and thanks to our supporter, Scott Widney, I get to check out a flick that has been on my radar for a while now but I juts never got around to. I don't know what was up with me this day but I was on one. Went into several rants like in the old days of the podcast, talking about people spoiling movies online, streaming services being trash, home media being wack nowadays and I did have a few good words about the new Batman: Caped Crusader series. Also, do you agree with Chris on how he saw the ending to this movie? This week, The Blind Rage Podcast takes a look at SHALLOW GRAVE, a straight-to-video quickie that, up until a few years back, was available exclusively on a long out-of-print VHS. Vinegar Syndrome has since found the original 35mm negative and gave this rarity the Blu-ray star treatment. But was it worth the effort? Ehh… SHALLOW GRAVE is the story of four friends known for causing trouble at their private Catholic girls school. After a prank, which leads them in hot water with their head mistress, they set off to spend their spring break vacation in Fort Lauderdale. They, of course, have a breakdown, which leaves them stranded on a desolate road. One cliché leads to another and they end up witnessing a backwoods murder. Unfortunately for them, the killer happens to be the small town's sheriff. Once he realizes they know his secret, they come to find just how far he's willing to go to cover his tracks.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Danny Boyle's debut feature film Shallow Grave (1994) was eclipsed by Trainspotting (1996) and remains largely forgotten outside its native UK. But is the dark comedy thriller worth exhuming? Dan and Conrad pack up their hack saws and head for the woods to explore this slice of 90s Britain! (Chorus) Blame it on Cain Please don't blame it on me It's nobody's fault, but it just seems to be his turn
28 Days Later is a 2002 British post-apocalyptic horror film, our first film from the 21st Century. Ewan McGregor was the original choice to play the protagonist, ‘Jim', but he and director Danny Boyle had a falling-out at the time over The Beach, in which McGregor was to play the lead but was replaced by Leonardo DiCaprio (McGregor and Boyle have since reconciled). After McGregor, the role was offered to Ryan Gosling, who passed, having a scheduling conflict, leading to the film being offered to the relatively unknown Cillian Murphy. Danny Boyle films include: Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach, Sunshine and 127 Hours. He was the artistic director for the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, which he was offered a knighthood but declined. In 2011 he directed Frankenstein on stage for the National Theatre, with dual Holmes's: Cumberbatch and Miller, (that James was lucky enough to see live). Regular collaborator with Boyle, writer and director Alex Garland (who wrote this film) has a filmography that includes: Never Let Me Go, Dredd, Ex Machina, (for which he received an Oscar nomination), Annihilation and the fantastically bonkers ‘Men'. Garland has said he took inspiration for 28 days later from George A. Romero's Living Dead film series and John Wyndham's 1951 novel The Day of the Triffids. The crew filmed during early mornings and temporarily closed streets to capture recognisable and typically busy areas when they were deserted. For the scene in which Jim walks by the overturned double-decker bus, the crew placed the bus on its side and removed it when the shot was finished, all within 20 minutes. They had asked permission to place the bus outside Downing Street, but Westminster City Council refused. When they arrived at 4am and nobody from the council was present, they placed it there anyway. One of the first mainstream films to be shot entirely digitally, it was a financial success., grossing more than $82.7 million worldwide on its modest budget of $8 million, it became one of the most profitable horror films of 2002. Producer Andrew Macdonald had access to funding from the National Lottery, and pitched it to Universal Pictures, who declined to support it. Budget constraints proved to be an issue, with Christopher Eccleston having to take an emergency pay cut during filming. Macdonald announced to the crew that the production had run out of money, and filming ceased without a closing sequence being shot. After pitching several endings, the original, which featured Jim's death, tested badly with audiences, the studio granted more funding to film the ending scene that was eventually used. The crew organised for a real jet to fly overhead for them to film, as this was cheaper than approximately £70,000 for a computer-generated one. Despite Boyle not considering it a zombie film, 28 Days Later is credited with reinvigorating the zombie genre and influencing a revival in the decade after its release, with its fast-running monsters and character-driven drama. The film was followed by the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later and Boyle and Garland have been reportedly working on a 3rd part entitled “28 Years Later” (which may or may not be being released in 3 parts - depending on what rumours you read). In this episode, Kelly recounts the chilling story of Amy St. Laurent, a young woman who vanished in 2001 after a night out. Amy's determination for a fulfilling life was evident until her abrupt disappearance following a night spent with Eric Rubright in Portland, post her breakup with boyfriend Richard. Eric's dubious actions and testimony caught police attention, prompting Jeffrey Gorman, another person present that evening, to disclose crucial details under peer influence. Gorman corroborated Eric's version of events, intensifying the search for Amy despite inconclusive polygraph results, leaving her family in anguish.Kelly covers the unsettling events surrounding Amy's vanishing, implicating Russ - who offered Amy a ride from a discomforting party - as a prime suspect. Russ's evasive demeanor, refusal of a polygraph, and inconsistencies in his roommates' statements unveiled a harrowing narrative involving assault, drugging, and a fatal shooting. Russ's erratic behavior, confession to his mother, subsequent arrest, and a 60-year prison sentence ultimately served justice, despite his mother's efforts to retract her statement, emphasizing the tragic injustice Amy endured.Timestamps:0:03:41 Amy's High School and College Dreams0:06:46 Amy's Night Out in 20010:10:06 Eric Rubright's Confusion and Concern0:17:56 Police Press Conference and Investigation0:20:50 Tip Line and Jeffrey "Russ" Gorman's Call0:23:32 Uncomfortable Departure0:24:37 Polygraph Decline0:26:51 Suspicious Details0:28:32 Applying Pressure0:30:20 Suspicious Detail0:32:16 Search Initiates0:35:20 Tool Borrowing0:37:33 Cadaver Dog Discovery0:43:03 Disturbing Confession0:46:38 Compelled Testimony 0:48:37 Sentencing ReactionCheck out Factor! Keith Allen has been many things. The father of popstar Lily and Game of Thrones actor Alfie Allen, he was also a TV presenter, theatre actor, the man behind two hit football anthems (the Fat Les ditty “Vindaloo” and New Order's “World in Motion”, both of which he co-wrote) and a handful of small roles in cult movies (Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, 24 Hour Party People). Growing up, he was a troublemaker; he'd spent time in Borstal, was thrown out of drama school, even sent to prison. Now in his 70s, as he prepares to star in a new musical called Rehab, he looks back on the moments that have made up his rollercoaster life and career with Krishnan Guru-Murthy, on this week's episode of Ways to Change the World. Produced by Silvia Maresca. Song credits: 'Vindaloo' / Fat Les 'World in Motion' / New Order

In October 1993, Thurgood Marshall School of Law student Dawn Williams vanished without so much as a trace. Fellow students, friends, and family searched everywhere but no clues were found. Houston Police, too, failed to find anything at all. The following month, a crew cleaning trash from an area in rural Montgomery County found the 25-year-old women's body buried in a shallow grave, partially unearthed by animals. Police, and especially Dawn's father, had a good idea what happened to her and who did it, but evidence has eluded investigators for 30 years. 21-year-old Jasmeen Kaur is stalked and abducted from her workplace, subdued and placed into the boot of a car, transported along gravel roads to an isolated area, and buried alive by her ex-boyfriend, Tarikjot Singh. Joseph Scott Morgan and Dave Mack unravel the harrowing story of Jasmeen Kaur, a young nursing student, whose body is found in a shallow grave in South Australia's Flinders Ranges. Delving deep into the chilling facts, they highlight the disturbing acts leading to the crime captured by CCTV, the terror and uncertainty experienced by Jasmeen, and the signs of her desperate struggle while entombed. UK house music, a *very* active camera, and Ewan McGregor looking like a SNACK…that's right, folks - we're covering Danny Boyle! With the England bit retired, we're finally giving dual citizen David Sims the time and space to actually reminisce about his very British upbringing. A sensation in the UK upon release, SHALLOW GRAVE introduced Boyle as the cinematic voice of “Cool Britannia” - yet the film remains an under-seen gem in the States. In this episode, the boys discuss what they would do with a dead body (wouldn't cut it up) and a suitcase of cash (would only skim off the top for a cheeky Nando's); plus, they gush over the film's incredible apartment setting…or should we say “flat”? The man accused of kidnapping and killing 18-year-old Naomi Irion will stand trial. Troy Drive has been found competent to face charges. Driver is accused of abducting Irion from a Walmart parking lot. Police find the body of missing teen Naomi Irion after receiving a tip that leds them to her gravesite. 18-year-old Naomi Irion was last seen on security footage, sitting in her vehicle while waiting for the shuttle she takes to work at Panasonic in the Reno-Sparks area. The footage also shows a man walking from the direction of a homeless camp and lurking among the parked vehicles. Naomi's brother, Casey Valley, says that security footage seemed to show the suspect saying or doing something that made Naomi move from the driver's seat to the passenger seat. Irion was in the passenger's seat as the man drove away. Investigators later found Naomi's blue 1992 Mercury Sable at the Fernley industrial park. An autopsy revealed Irion was shot multiple times. Driver faces six charges in addition to first-degree murder, including sexual assault, robbery and destroying evidence. This week, in Cochranton, Pennsylvania, three young women navigate through relationships, with some lingering feelings, and resentments between two the women, who used to be in a relationship. Plans are made for everyone to get together, to move on, and be friends, but it all falls apart, when one of them gets reported as a missing person. No one claims to know anything, until a shallow grave is found, and the unbelievably terrible murder is uncovered. The killers end up being proud of the murder, and writing about their desire to commit more!!Along the way, we find out that county fairs are always weird, that no matter the genders involved, jealously can always be an issue, and that being buried once, is enough for one person!!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports!
