The lads chat summer gigs, the rise of Irish pop phenomenon CMAT, concert etiquette, and why some people seem determined to spend half a show queuing for pints instead of watching the band. Then the conversation drifts towards the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup — and whether either of them can muster much enthusiasm for it. From memories of USA '94 and Roberto Baggio, to modern football politics, FIFA, ticket prices, and the influence of figures like Gianni Infantino and Donald Trump, it's a wide-ranging discussion on how sport feels very different in 2026. Along the way there are detours into Bruce Springsteen, Christy Moore, Roy Keane, World Cup nostalgia retro football jerseys, and the kind of random tangents you've come to expect from a guest-free episode.

As everyone awaits confirmation of Michael Carrick being named as Manchester United manager, Rio is joined by Ste Howson and Joel Beya to discuss the reasons INEOS have finally backed him, whether the fanbase is truly united behind the decision and why Rio believes the club now has no choice but to fully commit to the ‘Carrick project'.The trio debate criticism around Carrick's appointment, the idea he's somehow landed the role “by default” and what his football identity actually is. Rio also insists Carrick “won't give a s**t” about criticism from pundits like Roy Keane and Gary Neville, while Ste argues United barely have any genuinely pro-United voices left in mainstream punditry. There's also huge praise for Casemiro following “Rio Meets Casemiro” and the standing ovation he received at Old Trafford, which leads Rio into a reflection on the Brazilian's overall cost to Manchester United and whether his impact has justified the huge transfer fee and wages.Bruno Fernandes becomes another major talking point as the lads debate where he ranks amongst the Premier League's modern greats. Rio argues Bruno deserves more respect because of the level of Manchester United teams he's been carrying, while Ste explains why the club's barren spell actually makes him even more valuable to supporters. The conversation also turns to Xabi Alonso's shock move to Chelsea, with Ste calling him the most exciting coach in world football and Rio questioning why he didn't wait for an opportunity to take over Arne Slot at Liverpool.Plus there's insight into what Casemiro really thinks about Bruno behind the scenes and why Rio believes Fernandes would have taken Manchester United's 2008 Champions League-winning side to another level. It's a wrap for Irish Stew as the podcast-in-residence at the 2026 Solas Nua Capital Irish Film Festival in Metro DC with this episode of five conversations spanning three films: Saipan, Báite, and Conveyance. The Festival's Opening Night feature Saipan unspools the drama that played out on that distant island between the manager of the 2002 World Cup-bound Irish football team Mick McCarthy, played by Steve Coogan and its star player Roy Keane acted by Éanna Hardwicke.Co-director Glenn Leyburn speaks to co-host John Lee about the challenge of dramatizing one of Irish football's most divisive moments: "You want to show both sides of that story and show both men as three-dimensional human beings. We realized how much they wanted the best for their country and the team but just had different ways of going about that. Drama is built from having those shifts and then having shifts within that."Co-director Lisa Barros D'Sa explained the creative process of her filmmaking partnership with her husband Glenn, saying, "The most important thing is to agree on the voice of the film and what the tone is. Once we lock that in, we know the film that we want to make. And then on set, I work a bit more with the actors. Glenn works a bit more with camera."Festival regular and Irish football fan Dan Mahoney provides some audience perspective: "I've probably been to this festival seven or eight times. I was in Dublin for the semi-final match in 1990, which was an unbelievable experience. I didn't remember the whole story, but I thought it was a fabulous film," he said. The following day, John spoke with Eleanor O'Brien, lead actor of Báite, the Irish-language murder mystery and family drama that earned the festival's fan favorite award."It was my first feature film where I was the lead — and challenging for that reason, and also because of the Irish in it. By no means am I a native speaker," she says, adding “It's really nice being there at the start and being able to create a character knowing that the character is with me in mind."Eleanor shares the unlikely early steps in her young career and towards the end of the conversation with the rising star, you'll learn the Irish word for handcuffs!Co-host Martin Nutty closes out the festivities with Gemma Creagh, associate editor of Film Ireland and director of the short film Conveyance, a satirical and spooky look at Ireland's housing crises, told through the eyes of a young couple trying desperately to find a home.“They go to see some really dilapidated, horrible places, and then they find this most incredibly gorgeous apartment in Dun Laoghaire overlooking the sea, however, it is not without an undisclosed guest of some ghostly kind,” she says.Gemma also offers a sweeping account of the Irish film industry's rise, pinpointing a pivotal moment, saying, "Game of Thrones came into Northern Ireland and it was the biggest production that had ever been in Ireland. The impact was huge."Three films, five voices, and a fitting farewell to a festival that keeps delivering.Irish Stew LinksIrish Stew CIFF EpisodesFacebookInstagramLinkedInBlueskyMedia Partner: IrishCentralSend us Fan Mail

Few figures in Irish sport have cast as long a shadow as Roy Keane. To some, he's the embodiment of elite standards and uncompromising honesty. to others, he represents something else - a kind of cultural hard edge that's seeped far beyond football. New book argues that keane's influence didn't just shape teams but helped to shape modern ireland itself. We need to talk about Roy: The Keaneification of Modern Ireland, the author of which joins Pat, Dave Hannigan, contributor with the Irish Times based in New York
As a young Roy Keane headed on the train to Dublin from Cork for a coaching course, he saw some railway workers toiling by the track.‘Look at them fuckers out there and they're going like the hammers,' he said. ‘I have to make it as a footballer.'On Free State today we look at what drives a man like Roy Keane and how is the boy the father of the man?Dave Hannigan, author of We Need to Talk About Roy, discusses how Ireland and Keane have got along and not got along. He explains the force that took him from Mayfield to England when many expected he would soon be back. But Keane stayed and succeeded in ways nobody could have imagined. Hosted on Acast. Dave Hannigan joins us today to talk about his new book "We Need To Talk About Roy"None has had more of substance to say for himself. Across nearly four tumultuous decades, from callow teen prospect to grey bearded influencer, Roy Keane has transcended sport, redefined the parameters of fame and captivated the nation. Our hopes, dreams and sometimes our despair have been wrapped up in him, his exploits and outbursts. Oscillating between national treasure and national argument, he put the manic in talismanic, bestriding Lansdowne Road one minute, getting booed there the next.If the sporting heroes of every era offer a window into a society, We Need to Talk About Roy is a fascinating portrait of who and what we were in the age of Keane, showcasing our vices and virtues, our fortunes and foibles. The best of us, the worst of us. Drink. Religion. United. Begrudgery. The Celtic Tiger. Tabloidization. Saipan. Touching on all the major themes and teams, this remarkable book is a refreshing and entertaining look at how the life and times of our greatest footballer is the story of modern Ireland itself. His progress and pitfalls, revolutions and evolution uniquely intertwined with those of the country that made him.He is of Ireland. Ireland is of him.
Dave Jones presents Monday Night Football alongside Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane, who analyse Leeds' huge 2-1 win at Old Trafford against bitter rivals Manchester United. On this week's episode of That Peter Crouch Podcast, Pete, Sids, and Chris are joined by global chart-topper Dermot Kennedy for a wide-ranging chat that blends football culture with life on the road as one of the world's biggest touring artists. From busking on the streets of Dublin to selling out the Aviva Stadium, Dermot opens up about the grind behind his rise, the self-doubt before album releases, and why live performances still mean everything to him.The lads dive into Dermot's deep love for football, growing up as a Manchester United fan inspired by Roy Keane, and his unforgettable experiences playing Soccer Aid alongside legends like Wayne Rooney, Rivaldo, and Carlos Tevez.
