In this episode we close out 2021 recapping the end of our Pathfinder 2e chapter. But first we dive into the Animal Crossing New Horizons 2.0 update. After a long dry-spell Nintendo drops the biggest update the Animal Crossing community has ever seen. With thousands of new items, recipes, songs, and mechanics from the expansion, Animal Crossing promises to bring lots of joy heading into 2022. Meanwhile, in our Pathfinder adventure the team managed to escape captivity in the outpost while it was under attack from mysterious forces. Unfortunately the party ended up killing some informants who may have had information on what exactly has been going on, and why the party keeps getting attacked by weird squid-creatures. What does Pathfinder have in-store for 2022 and what does the party have to look forward to as they begin a new chapter in the adventure? In this episode we welcome Luis Loza back to the podcast to discuss our unfortunate encounter with Redcaps, as well as all of the incredible goodies for spellcasters in the Secrets of Magic book. Myron has been pouring over the 70 pages of new spells, looking for the perfect new additions to Chester's somewhat dubious repertoire. There are all sorts of interesting new spells like Cast Into Time, which can send creatures tumbling through time only to be snatched back into their timeline, while being dealt some damage along the way. Or perhaps your group may have need to summon a Kaiju to help in your encounter? There's incredible variety just waiting to be unlocked on our character sheets. We also spend some time recounting how the party is doing with the Redcap encounter (not so well), and Luis has some sage advice on how to deal with the nasty creatures. Luis does take us to task for leaving the path and heading into the forbidden forest. The game is called Pathfinder afterall, so perhaps that was not the wisest choice the party could have taken. We're not quite sure how we will survive the encounter, but perhaps if we follow Luis' advice we'll have a fighting chance. The crew recounts a banner evening of gaming which resulted in Myron striking out in Can't Stop! And we wrap up discussing our latest Pathfinder episode. Not only did the party encounter Lore again on our travels, but we also came across a group of Redcaps. It seems that the party may have stumbled into a bigger challenge than Tom intended. The question is, will the party be able to survive the blood-thirsty Redcaps and continue on their mission? Remember to look for all episodes of our podcasts on iTunes, Stitcher, and TuneIn. In this episode Tom and Myron debate the merits of Avowel, the online version of Wordsy. Wordsy is a spelling game for folks who can't spell, but Tom was less than impressed with the online implementation which apparently only accepted correctly spelled words.    Meanwhile, in Pathfinder with Chapter 1 now closed we look forward to what Chapter 2 has in-store for our adventurers. To begin we all got to level up to fourth level and pick some new goodies for our character sheets. Myron picked a cool animal companion for Chester, Anna got some new buffs for the party, and JT is still unimpressed with what the Rogue class has to offer. While the players were all preoccupied updating their character sheets Tom was busy creating the newly won guildhall and guildmaster - Reuben. Surely Reuben's introduction to the team will harrold new adventures for the party as we begin Chapter 2, titled Along the Unbroken Branch. In this episode we discuss what might be next for Animal Crossing and our Pathfinder adventure. E3 came and went without so much as a mention of Animal Crossing New Horizons, and the fandom let Nintendo in on their displeasure. The topic was trending on Twitter and Nintendo actually issued an apology, promising new and exciting activities in future updates. All the loyal players are still waiting, but for how long?    In Pathfinder, with Fifi safely delivered and the guildhall secured, our Chapter 1 adventure has come to a close. We take some time to talk about what our characters are looking forward to in Chapter 2, and try to get Tom to spill the beans on what he has planned.   Remember to look for all episodes of our podcasts on iTunes, Stitcher, and TuneIn. In this episode we tease a new entry into the Borderlands-verse. Tiny Tina's Wonderland is coming in 2022, and Myron and Anna can't wait. Or at least Myron can't wait to play. Anna's review will hinge on whether Mr. Torque gets a starring role.  Meanwhile, Nintendo is trolling Tom by tempting him with the Game Builder Garage early download which can't be played until release day. He's chomping at the bit to design some cool games, but is a bit concerned that it might cut into his Stardew Valley time. Tom's invested over 60 hours in his Stardew farm, which Anna thinks is cute up against her 3,000+ hours of ACNH play-time. Which game will come out on top of this battle royale? Overall, boardgamearena continues to serve up a pretty compelling online boardgaming experience, even at times beating the Steam implementation of particular games like Splendor. After recounting the thrilling victories and epic defeats from our boardgame extravaganza we move on to discussing our hopes for the next Pathfinder adventure. Everyone in the party received a magic item, so we're sure to have some fun with those in the near future. JT's still not convinced that Levana packs a powerful enough punch. Meanwhile our adventuring party managed to kill the rest of the kobolds, or at the least the ones that didn’t run away like cowards. Despite repeated attempts Pyriax was unable to bring the badger to heel. But what’s really on everyone’s mind is getting JT to spill the beans on what Levana stole. In this episode we discuss our thoughts on what Nintendo might have in store for loyal Animal Crossing players. The Animal Crossing franchise is now twenty years old and with New Horizons being the most popular version yet, it seems only fitting that Nintendo has committed to support new content for the foreseeable future.  We also take a trip back to our Pathfinder world, where our latest adventure took many unexpected turns. Our intrepid adventurers encountered a band of kobolds on the way back to Cidade, and needless to say things did not go the way Tom had planned. Entity killed a kobold with her mind and Pyriax took a turn as an acrobatic beastmaster. Meanwhile Levana was on a bad trip, while Star turned into an animal and bit Chester. We’re only midway through the encounter, so things could end up going the other way, but so far this rag-tag group of kobolds is getting more than they bargained for. The latter fares better in his rankings, though both sound enjoyable enough for any fan of the series. Nintendo has been on a roll lately, and everyone is keen on them keeping up the winning streak in 2021. What everyone really wants to talk about is our latest Pathfinder adventure, where our party confronted the room of runes and discovered that some diabolical creature(s) had killed all of our mounts (well all of them but one). In this episode we talk about our latest Pathfinder adventure, which had us exploring the Iron Citadel and finally reaching our goal. Tom would love to share his Mario 3D World and Bowser’s Fury play with the world, but alas it requires capture cards and all sorts of extra work. So that content will forever stay locked away, hidden from the world. Nintendo woes aside, the adventuring party finally made some progress #Fififound, and there were tons of surprises along the way. From rat swarms, to mysterious guitar players, to a naked man chained to a wall (who was not interested in being released), to a magical tree of many bounties, the crew found many strange things afoot in the Iron Citadel, but finally managed to find Fifi. On this episode we pause to reflect on the strange year that was 2020. It was a mixed bag of a year in the gaming world -- with major titles like Cyberpunk 2077 stumbling out of the gate, smaller titles like Minecraft Dungeons delivering simple and fun gameplay, and somewhat surprising hits like Animal Crossing New Horizons, which offered a needed escape from the outside world. We’re happy to bring a close to this challenging year, but are so grateful for the opportunities it afforded us to connect more, but in different ways. Here’s hoping that 2021 brings us new delights, a renewed focus on fixing a promising but flawed Cyberpunk 2077, and continuing to build out the online platforms that bridge our isolation and keep us happily gaming away. On this episode we reflect a little on what makes us happy going into the holidays. JT bought all of the advent calendars (though not a weed one). Myron manages to find some weed advent calendars for sale in Canada, but the question remains was he naughty or nice? Anna got her Christmas wish in the form of a bright, new, shiny Xbox. So far it’s a speedier, sexier SexBox and has allowed her and Myron to give Borderlands 3 another shot. Tom is quite thankful to crown 2020 the year of Pathfinder. We all agree that this new system breathed new life into our role-playing adventures. It’s been a surprisingly challenging year for scheduling play sessions, but our move to asynchronous play on Discord is picking up steam, and our merry adventurers are finally starting to make some progress in the Iron Citadel. Most importantly though, it’s brought us together through difficult times. And for that we are eternally grateful to Pathfinder 2.0. It’s been a bright spot in an otherwise not-so-bright year. Myron kicks off this episode with some sad news. It seems he’s in an abusive relationship with his new Xbox. Tom is happy to wait for the first adopters to work out the kinks. While waiting for the new Xbox to arrive the crew got together for another Pathfinder episode. Our fledgling adventurers finally managed to make it through some doors and find a clue, a Leshy named Mable. Unfortunately one of the party members tried to set her on fire, which didn’t go over well with the tree-like creature. All was not lost. On this episode we anxiously await our upcoming Pathfinder episode and discuss the asynchronous play that we’ve taken up on Discord. The crew is still on a mission to find Fifi in the Iron Citadel, and decided to split up to cover more ground, Scooby-Doo style. Tom’s amused at the different approaches each pair is taking -- with the evil pairing of Levana and Pyriax looking into each detail, Entity and Kuill B lining through rooms and doors, and Chester and Star doing all sorts of silly things. Tom created Roger, a dice-rolling robot, on our Discord server to help facilitate the asynchronous play. Roger has been none-so-kind to some party members, but apparently has produced some twenties. Tom swears he uses Roger too, so he’s an equal opportunity dice curmudgeon. All-in-all we’re really enjoying the asynchronous play and looking forward to reuniting somehow and continuing our quest for Fifi. Inclusivity and diversity in gaming - It’s a big table, come and join us

In this episode we mix things up a bit. Tom recently learned an important lesson about lack of cross-platform support for Minecraft Dungeons. Apparently Microsoft can’t play nice in its own sandbox, which is a real shame. You would think (since it’s been done before) that Microsoft would support folks playing Minecraft on PC and Xbox at the same time, but you’d be wrong.  Speaking of sandboxes and playing nice, the crew dives deeper into lack of diversity in gaming, pop culture and our everyday lives. Reality is shaped by what we see, read and hear, and that’s why it’s so important to bring diverse voices and perspectives to our gaming tables. Having fun and playing games need not be an exclusive club. In fact, welcoming more people to the table will only increase the depth of story-telling, and enrich the gaming experience for everyone. Tom doesn’t seem all that sullen, and is already talking about the PS5, but that seems a bit premature given his lack of Switch. Myron gives his final thoughts on Divinity: Original Sin 2. He reached the end-game, but was disappointed in the finish. Overall, he thought it was a solid game with a lackluster and tedious ending. And our merry crew of misfits finally managed to begin a quest in Pathfinder. We are officially on the hunt for Fifi. In this episode we dive into creative ways to celebrate milestones virtually, a new hot game, and of course some Pathfinder updates. First, during this strange time of COVID-19 physical distancing it’s difficult to celebrate normal events like birthdays, graduations etc. But games can help bridge that gap too. The crew threw a very special birthday celebration recently in Animal Crossing, for a very real person with an important birthday milestone. From prize wheel dig sites, to musical tree-stumps, Animal Crossing has everything you need to throw a birthday party for someone special. Meanwhile, Myron, Anna and Tom have fallen hard for the new hotness - Minecraft Dungeons. This roguelike dungeon crawler provides hours and hours of button mashing, hack-and-slashing fun. It’s so popular it topped Animal Crossing on the sales charts! There are no level caps, so play to your heart's desire and defeat that Arch-Illager over-and-over again.  Finally, we recap our latest Pathfinder adventure. We’re still learning our skills and spells, and how to navigate this new game system. Tom is thoroughly enjoying how the team is telling their own story. Well it is when you can throw furniture, slap your teammates and break windows. From the studio that brought us Overcooked, this new game is a light way to spend some time with friends either with couch-coop or online.  Meanwhile Myron has been double-timing with Divinity 2 and Animal Crossing. Both titles are taking up lots of hours, but who doesn’t have time to spare nowadays? Meanwhile, Anna achieved her ultimate goal of a 5 star island in Animal Crossing. What’s next? Why a virtual birthday party for real-life people on the island of Utopia of course! Finally, the team discusses their hopes and dreams for the next Pathfinder episode. After careful consideration of the full tool-set he’s giving 4 ½ slices of bacon. JT is much less impressed and feels that the game hits too close to home with the amount of chores required. Anna is thoroughly enjoying it, but not quite as much as Myron, mostly due to the repetitive stress injury caused by frantically smashing buttons to get through endless dialogue.   Meanwhile, Tom introduced us to Chapter 2 in our Pathfinder journey, and was completely taken by surprise by the group’s collective will to thwart all of his plans. It seems that nothing in our journey went as planned, but Tom couldn’t be happier! Both Myron and Tom agree that it’s a decent game worth a try on Xbox game Pass, but not worth more than 2 strips of bacon. Tom has been busy preparing for the next Pathfinder adventure while the players complete their level 2 characters sheets and mentor backstories. It turns out Tom considered killing everyone as a “joke”, but luckily someone talked him out of it. Apparently Tom forgot that we have a “no death” rule for our RPG’s. It’s a fun mobile game, similar to Galaxy of Heroes with no barrier to entry. If you’re looking for a pick-up and play game that doesn’t require a lot of thought, but can be addictive for collectors, give a whirl. On the other hand, Munchkin Quacked Quest on XBOX Gamepass doesn’t quite capture the magic of the card game. Tom thinks it’s a funny party type game, similar to Mario Party, but the randomness of who gets to “win” is irksome to Tom. He gives it 3.5 pieces of bacon due to it being fun for the family. Division 2 Warlords of New York is upon us and Myron and Anna have been spending time getting back into the game to prepare for the new expansion. We’ve reached World Tier 5 and have maxed out our gear scores just in time for everything to change. But first we take a little time to talk about what we’re looking forward to in 2020, and the danger of high-expectations combined with the complexity of compelling software development. There were some pretty big misses in 2019, and we try to take our lessons learned and not repeat the same mistakes with highly anticipated games for 2020. Next Anna and Myron review The Quacks of Quendlinburg from North Star Games, a 2018 GOTY winner. Quacks works like a deck-building game, but instead of building a deck of cards you’re a charlatan building a bag of potion ingredients. More powerful potion ingredients can produce more valuable potions and score more victory points. Quacks also offers a clever catch-up mechanic that can really help level the playing field, so you’re never really out of the race.  Finally, we get down to discussing some of the challenges and fun aspects of creating a character for a new gaming system. Tom and Myron felt right at home with the Pathfinder 2.0 system, while Anna and JT didn’t enjoy the lengthy process quite as much. The new season showed up and the game is as healthy as ever with player engagement up, thanks to their black hole ending. Myron admits to watching Fortnite play-throughs and we all were less than impressed. He did compare Fortnite with Dancing with the Stars, one of the best yet strangest non-sequiturs to emerge from a host. Anna admitted that she’d watch CBS Soap Opera has-beens dance if given the opportunity. Tom then becomes desperate to insert a transition to the next segment. Five Minute Dungeon was reviewed with much praise. All but Tom has played the game and he was seemingly unimpressed with the description of the game. Five Minute Dungeon and its sister game, Five Minute Marvel is a tabletop game with a board and cards, made into decks for each player. From there, the groups have five minutes to run a gauntlet of five or six villains, Myron was unsure of the precise number. The game is paired with an app that keeps track of the time and taunts the players, much to JT’s chagrin. Myron prefers playing the paladin, not to anyone’s surprise, especially Anna. The game got 5 pieces of bacon from Myron, but only 4 pieces from Anna and JT. They all really liked the game and would recommend anyone to play it. Tom was skeptical but warmed to the game ultimately being accused, by Myron, for Hashtag-Making-Crap-Up.  Tom lead a discussion about Galaxy of Heroes and its current state of health. He began lamenting the new character; General Anakin Skywalker. He quickly declared the game on life support, calling the new character an Immortal Lord who unbalanced the game. JT shared her challenges in playing Galaxy of Heroes discussing her strategies for collecting her favorite characters and playing to her standards. JT questioned the purpose of always chasing a marquee event. Tom began explaining the purpose of distracting players by having marquee events with Myron adding some psychology of gameplay knowledge. In this week's episode the gang discussed coming home from GenCon and the record-setting attendance. Starting with Thursday an immense number of people and moving through the weekend discussing how busy we were, with early mornings, much to the chagrin of Myron. Despite of the activities, it was a great experience for everyone. Transitioning into the desire to keep up the gaming pace despite being in the world.  The conversation quickly transitions into discussion of the games; Someone Has Died and Tiny Tina's Tea Party. Both outstanding experiences where the gameplay can rise or lower to the level of the players.  The gang shares interviews for Tattoo Stories with Eric Slauson and It's Blunderful with Brooke Schwartzman. During Tattoo Stories, the team asks Eric about his experience creating and developing the game. Then, we play the game with the creator; really setting the tone of how the game is played. We argue our tattoo designs to Eric to win some points. Then, Tom just cannot say Totoro. The group then waxes poetic about social, drawing games. For It’s Blunderful, we ask Brooke about this more grown-up game where betting points and answering awkward personal questions to earn enough to win the game. Then, the team discusses strategies of playing the opponents more than the cards to maximize bets. @stmgames  @bicyclecards #GenCon #HaveFunAndPlay #bicyclecards #drawatattoo #boardgames #havefunandplay Remember to look for all episodes of our podcasts on iTunes, Stitcher, and TuneIn. Homebrew and House Rules, mistakes or creative ways to cheat?

In this episode, we welcome back Chris Cormier from Geeky Goodies to share a review and join in our discussion of the evolution of House Rules and Homebrew rules in RPG’s and board games. But first, Myron kicks things off by spreading some love and hype to the Switch. Marvel Ultimate Alliance has been released and Myron is 100 percent onboard the Nintendo train. Tom watched the teaser video and thinks it might be time to buy the Switch. A simple co-op beat-’em up game sounds like fun for the whole family to enjoy. Meanwhile Chris has just played Mord im Arosa (by Alessandro Zucchini) again and discovered that he still enjoys the unique game mechanic based on sound. In this game players are guests, investigators and suspects in two murders that occurred at the hotel Arosa. Using a unique hollow nesting tower design, each player drops player token clue(s) into the tower and listens intently to try to hear which level the the clue(s) landed on. Guess right and you might be able to incriminate your opponents or clear some of your own evidence. Guess wrong and you leave more evidence behind to be found. Chris gives it 3 strips of bacon for its simplicity, fast-paced gameplay and unique sound-based game mechanic.  Finally, Tom leads a discussion on the evolution of Homebrew D&D rules and House Rules in board games. From D&D special Homebrew items, to House Rules in Monopoly and Munchkin tune in to find out each podcaster’s favorite custom rules. We're live from Gen Con with our second broadcast with an even larger audience. Day 2 and 3 at the Con were amazing. Everyone pretty much arrived bright and early Friday and Saturday morning to get to work. We did a lot of interviews and saw a bunch of great games and met a lot of great people. We covered a lot of ground at the con over both days (we have the step counts to prove it) In this episode, the group went through the highlights from each day and had an in-depth discussion about Pathfinder 2.0 and other games like D&D from various editions. We hope you enjoy our coverage of Gen Con 2019! Remember to look for all episodes of our podcasts on iTunes, Stitcher, and TuneIn. Make sure to subscribe to the show so you’ll never miss an episode. We're live from Gen Con with our first ever broadcast with an audience. Day 1 at the Con was eventful and quite crowded. Anna and Myron arrived bright and early Thursday morning to find the gaming halls already full. Usually things don't fill up until Friday and Saturday so it seems like this Con is going for more attendance records. Despite the crowds, the podcasters had a great first day with interviews with Bicycle games and a demo of their new cooperative drawing game Tattoo Stories. Coming out in October, stay tuned for the full interview with the Creator if the game. Remember to look for all episodes of our podcasts on iTunes, Stitcher, and TuneIn. In this episode, the Have Fun and Play podcasters devote the entire show to their upcoming trip to Gen Con. The “con” as it’s lovingly called is an annual gaming convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. In fact, it is the largest tabletop gaming convention in North America. Originally named the Lake Geneva Wargames Convention, the con has evolved and grown over the years. Moving from Lake Geneva to Milwaukee and then to Indianapolis, where it’s been held since 2003. Myron and Tom have a long history with the con, having attended going back into the ’90s. Both were originally drawn to the con as a place where pen and paper role-players could unite and share a fun weekend of gaming. Now the event welcomes all kinds of gamers, with an exhibit hall showcasing not only games and gaming paraphernalia, but also artisans who work in leather, textiles, metal and many other mediums. This year marks the podcast’s first trip to a convention and JT secured a press pass for the event! We have a jam-packed schedule of games, seminars, crafting, and interviews with creators. JT is most excited about what Funko Pop! has in store for their game reveal. Tom and Anna are both looking forward to the competitive game Someone Has Died. And Myron just wants to have fun and schedule some time for naps. Stay Tuned to future episodes to hear about our adventures in the heartland and to hear our upcoming interviews.
