This week's story shine's a light on one of the most courageous humans you will ever come across, Nathan Ogden.  Back in December 0f 2001, Nathan, an accomplished snow skier, accustomed to catching big air, was hauling down the mountain and launched himself off a huge jump soaring more than 30 feet in the air.  But this particular jump went horribly wrong and Nathan crashed, crushing his spine, leaving him in a wheel chair and endless hours, days and months ahead of him to regain the use of his arms and hands.  Through all of this, Nathan held hope that one day he would walk again. That is until an unfortunate series of events that led to Nathan breaking his neck a 2nd time, this time even higher up, wiping out all the work he had done for 13 months to regain the use of his hands and arms, and leaving him permanently paralyzed.  But even that didn't stop Nathan from going on to accomplish so many amazing things that most of us only dream of. Listen to this inspiring story where Nathan teaches us that we can do virtually anything we choose in life, in spite of the sometimes overwhelming obstacles put in front of us.To donate to his charity, please visit:ChairTheHope.org To become a Better Place Project Member (and receive free BPP Merch) and support our show, please visit::https://www.patreon.com/BetterplaceprojectTo stay connected with Better Place Project and for updates and behind the scenes info, please follow us on social media:  Website: BetterPlaceProject.org (Leave us a voice message directly from the home page of our website)Instagram: @BetterPlaceProj  To follow Steve & Erin on Instagram:@SteveNorrisOfficial @ErinorrisFacebook: Facebook.com/BetterPlaceProjectPodcastEmail: BetterPlaceProjectPodcast@gmail.com

Nathan Ogden knew his life to be near perfect with two young children, a wonderful wife of four years, and a successful career. Then at 26 years old, life presented a drastic challenge three days before Christmas in 2001. Searching for adventure on a snow-capped mountain would soon have Nathan trading in his skis for a wheelchair. Coming off a ski jump wrong he was instantly paralyzed and diagnosed as a quadriplegic, not able to swallow or even breathe on his own. There was too much to live for so he battled through setbacks and obstacles with intense therapy. Nathan returned to work full time, was able to drive again, and embraced his new life from a seated position with the motto of “We Believe”. He was getting much stronger and knew he would walk again. Through intense therapy and pain over the next year he recovered nearly half of his body function and began working full-time again. Just as life seemed “normal” again Nathan experienced another devastating neck break that robbed him the use of his hands, triceps, and any regained movement from the chest down. By staring his excuses in the eye he found new legs to live life standing taller. Today, he is a highly sought after inspirational keynote speaker, trainer and author of the book, Unfrozen. Nathan has taught thousands in business, organizations, nonprofits and schools how to conquer their fears and move from paralysis to progress through eliminating excuses in their professional and personal lives. Nathan instantly connects with his audience and delivers invaluable principles they can relate to and act upon. Since his second neck break he has experienced snow skiing, snorkeling, skydiving, completing a half triathlon and most recently rappelling off a 150 foot cliff. Nathan resides in Boise, Idaho with his wife, Heather, and together they enjoy raising their four children. His courage and determination give hope and power to all who know and hear his message. You guys are going to LOVE this episode!! Nathan Ogden is a quadriplegic that has learned how to let go of limiting beliefs, conquer your fears and move from paralysis to progress.  His story is INSPIRING to say the least.   We discuss what it takes to go from “me” to “we” - how to enroll other’s into the bigger vision and how life should be a group effort.  We discuss the mindset it takes to “walk again” even when you lose it all (more than once). You will be inspired to do soul searching and ask yourself is “it” worth fighting for, what moves you from being stuck, and what your “Q cards” (or your excuses) are that keep you where you are.   Nathan shares how his family and him rode bikes, over 1200 miles, to raise money to buy wheelchairs for families in other countries...they have now raised over $100,000, have been able to give (and deliver) almost 1000 wheelchairs to people in other countries, and how His purpose is leaving a lasting legacy.   Questions asked in this Episode: -What moves you out of being stuck? -How do you find your purpose? -How do you inspire others to be enrolled in your vision? -How do you know “it” is worth fighting for?   In this Episode We Talk About: -Conquering Fears -Identifying Fears -Working so hard for something, only to lose it all again… -How to know if something is worth fighting for. -What moves you out of being stuck. -With fear comes excuses -How to find your purpose by following what brings you joy and what lights you up. -Finding a purpose that is bigger than you...because it’s not about you! -How your goals will be accomplished MUCH FASTER when you help other people reach their goals. -If you want to go fast, go alone.  If you want to go far, go together. -Let go, let God...His plans are way better anyways...   Guest Bio:  Nathan Ogden has taught thousands how to conquer their fears and move from paralysis to progress through eliminating excuses in their lives. Nathan Ogden is an inspirational speaker, coach, quadriplegic athlete, and the author of http://nathanogden.com/unfrozen/ (UnFrozen: Superior Systems to Move from Paralysis to Progress). He has spent years motivating and inspiring audiences and readers on how to conquer their fears and move from paralysis to progress.   Nathan's life changed in 2001. He was skiing and hit a jump, launching himself over 20 feet in the air. He landed on his neck, shattering his C7 vertebrae. Nathan was instantly paralyzed and told he would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.   Nathan and his wife didn't listen to that prognosis; “We have too many things that we want to do, so I will walk again and we will do whatever we have to do to get there.”   But, unfortunately, Nathan's adversity didn't end there.   During recovery, Nathan contracted pneumonia. He went unconscious in the middle of the night, so he was rushed to the hospital. While they were getting ready to take x-rays, he fell off the x-ray table – breaking his neck a second time.   When he woke up a few hours later and his wife told him what happened, the first three words out of Nathan's mouth were, “Bring it on.”   However, after about a month, negative thoughts started creeping in. He lost the use of everything from the chest down, a considerable amount of what he had already worked to recover. “That's when it hit me and I became what I call mentally paralyzed.”   If you're depressed or feel stuck, Nathan believes there are a few small (but significant) steps you need to take:   You have to put a name to what you're feeling – then you can start dealing with it. Identify things that will make you feel good about yourself during the day. For example, Nathan wouldn't check his social media until he had helped at least one person that day. Don't compare yourself to other people. “I need to quit comparing myself to others and be the best that I know I can be. That's good enough.”   Even two neck breaks couldn't stop Nathan for long because he lives by the words his father passed down to him: “Live adventure – don't watch it.”   This is never more obvious than in his philanthropic work: Nathan and his family created Chair the Hope to raise awareness and money for wheelchairs to be delivered in developing countries.   Nathan, his wife, and their four children kicked this off with a 1,200 mile bike ride, which they rode together, relay style, over the course of 12 days.   You can help help Ogden family in their mission to inspire others to get outside and keep moving despite disabilities, fears, or excuses, while raising money to donate to the Wheelchair Foundation, by supporting Chair of Hope at https://www.wheelchairfoundation.org/donations. --     Resources: Learn more at http://nathanogden.com/ (NathanOgden.com) Connect with Nathan: Facebook | Twitter Support Chair of Hope   UnFrozen: Superior Systems to Move from Paralysis to Progress   --   We are brought to you by the Lawton Marketing Group, a full service advertising and design agency serving companies and entrepreneurs at all levels.
