In this episode, we dive deep with James (Jared) Maynard—a physiotherapist, strength coach, and competitive powerlifter—who not long ago faced a life-threatening health crisis. What began as a simple head cold spiraled quickly into organ failure, a rare autoimmune condition called HLH, and five weeks on life support. James takes us through the harrowing journey of fighting for his life, grappling with the loss of his physical strength, and rebuilding himself from the ground up—both physically and mentally. Through candid conversations, he and Chris explore the daunting challenges of identity shifts, the importance of resilience, and the power of community support during times of crisis. James also opens up about how this experience reshaped his values, his priorities, and his approach to coaching others through their darkest moments. Whether you're an athlete, a coach, or someone facing a difficult path, this episode is a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the transformative potential of strength—inside and out. Join us as we explore what it truly means to be resilient, and how, sometimes, losing everything can lead to a life of even greater purpose. Key Takeaways: Resilience Is Built Before It's Needed: Jared credits years of training for literally saving his life—his physical and mental strength gave him a fighting chance. Cultivating strength, he says, is the best kind of life insurance. Redefining Identity: When everything you've built is stripped away, you're forced to confront the core of who you are. Jared opens up about the grief of losing his physical capabilities and the deep self-reflection it prompted. He urges us all to diversify our identities beyond just what we do. The Game of Inches: Recovery started not with personal records, but with celebrating the tiniest steps—holding a phone, standing for 30 seconds, building back from two-and-a-half pound plates. The real battle is finding the discipline and optimism to keep going when the wins feel minuscule. The Power of Support: Sometimes, being tough isn't about “doing it all.” Jared shares how leaning on his family, mentors, and broader community was critical—not just physically, but emotionally. Saying Yes to What Matters: Jared's brush with mortality is a powerful reminder to focus on what truly matters—his family, his mission, and savoring the small moments. Be ready, stay grounded, and communicate clearly — no matter what's at stake.Communicating under pressure isn't just a useful skill — it can be the difference between escalation and resolution. For Chris Voss, former FBI hostage negotiator and CEO of The Black Swan Group, it's a daily discipline built on empathy, self-regulation, and intentional listening. In this expanded conversation from our Spontaneous Speaking miniseries, Voss offers a rare window into the mindset and methods that helped him show up calm, focused, and adaptable when the pressure is sky-high.“Emotional intelligence is an insane accelerator to outcomes,” Voss shares, explaining how empathy, tone, and timing can shift the direction of any conversation. He breaks down techniques like labeling and mirroring, explores how to use silence and word choice strategically, and explains why overthinking can be just as risky as acting too fast. From gut-level pattern recognition to tactical use of voice, Voss shows how communication becomes more impactful when we're not trying to control — but to connect. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Voss and host Matt Abrahams dive into how negotiation techniques developed for life-or-death situations can be applied far beyond them — offering powerful takeaways for anyone who needs to think clearly under pressure, stay agile in the moment, and communicate effectively when it matters most.Episode Reference Links:Chris Voss Chris's Book: Never Split the Difference Ep.197 Prep or Perish: Mastering In-the-Moment Communication (1 of 3)Ep.198 Pause and Effect: Mastering In-the-Moment Communication (2 of 3)Ep.199 Blunder Pressure: Mastering In-the-Moment Communication (3 of 3)Ep.203 No Script, No Problem: Final Secrets to Speaking Under Pressure (Bonus) Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:50) - Path to Hostage Negotiation (03:42) - Power of Emotional Intelligence (05:00) - Staying Calm Under Pressure (06:10) - Mental Prep & Mindset (07:18) - Trusting Your Gut (07:58) - Avoiding Overthinking (09:01) - Flexibility in Negotiations (10:15) - Listen More, Talk Less (10:31) - Labeling & Mirroring (12:51) - Tone Shapes Impact (14:06) - The Final Three Questions (19:37) - Conclusion *****Thank you to our sponsors:Strawberry.me. This episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton, takes a candid look at the hidden mental health battles many first responders fight (Amazon Affiliate) while appearing perfectly fine on the outside. The discipline, structure, and professionalism that make them effective in the field often double as masks—concealing anxiety, depression, trauma, or burnout from colleagues, family, and even themselves. Defining “High-Functioning” Struggles: How success and competence can hide serious internal distress. The difference between coping and truly healing. Why First Responders Mask Symptoms: Cultural pressure to appear unshakable. Fear of stigma, career repercussions, or losing trust. The Role of Routine in Concealment: How structure and discipline can maintain outward stability. Why routines can become a crutch instead of a lifeline. The Cumulative Toll of Silent Struggles: The long-term health risks of untreated anxiety, depression, or trauma. The emotional cost on family relationships and personal well-being. The Danger of Self-Deception: How “I'm fine” becomes a habit, even to oneself. Why high-functioning doesn't mean healthy functioning. Strategies to Recognize and Address the Issue: Normalize Conversations Around Mental Health: Peer leaders and supervisors openly sharing their own experiences. Look for Micro-Signs in Yourself and Others: Changes in sleep, irritability, withdrawal, or overworking. Encourage Early Check-Ins, Not Crisis Interventions: Making mental health maintenance as routine as physical training. Use Trusted, Confidential Resources: Peer support, vetted therapists, or off-the-record consultations. Reframe Help-Seeking as Tactical Strength: Position mental wellness as part of operational readiness. This episode is a reminder that a polished uniform and a strong performance in the field don't always mean someone is okay—and that the bravest thing a responder can do might be to take off the mask.

What does it mean to be the kind of leader who doesn't break even in the face of chaos, uncertainty, and relentless pressure? In this episode of Disruptive CEO Nation, we sit down with Andrew Wittman, PhD– author, speaker, and founder of the Mental Toughness Training Center. With a background ranging from U.S. Marine Corps combat to protecting high-profile leaders as a Federal agent, Andrew now equips CEOs and entrepreneurs with the “inner armor” needed to thrive under pressure. Together, we explored the concepts of mindset, resilience, and problem-solving skills that allow leaders to safeguard their reputation, make better decisions, and lead with confidence in unpredictable times…and we have to add that Andrew was one of our most humble and down-to-earth guest that we are sure you will enjoy listening to. Here are highlights: -Perpetual resilience vs. bouncing back: Why true leadership is about pre-deciding who you are before the crisis hits. -Thinking as a physical skill: How to train your mind to stay calm, ordered, and in control under stress. -Cellular problem-solving: The importance of diagnosing the root cause instead of treating surface-level symptoms in business. -Guarding your reputation: Why CEOs must see themselves as brand ambassadors and protect both their image and their people. -Thriving in chaos: How to lead decisively when uncertainty, AI disruption, and global instability make predictability impossible. About the guest: Andrew D. Wittman, PhD, is a United States Marine Corps infantry combat veteran, former police officer, and federal agent. As a Special Agent for the U.S. Capitol Police, he led the security detail for Nancy Pelosi and personally protected high-profile figures including Hillary Clinton, Benjamin Netanyahu, King Abdullah of Jordan, and Sir Elton John. As a private military contractor for the U.S. State Department, he trained former Navy SEALs, Marines, Army Rangers, and Special Forces in high-threat diplomatic security. These are the real-world crucibles where he forged the system behind Inner ArmorTM—his powerful framework for mastering pressure, mental toughness, and emotional control. Wittman's latest book, INNER ARMOR: Perpetual ResilienceTM, is the centerpiece of his national media campaign and corporate speaking tour. Drawing on three decades of elite military, law enforcement, and leadership experience, this tactical guide provides the tools to build emotional sovereignty and thrive in the chaos of today's world. It's more than just another book on grit—it's a field manual for rewiring your mental operating system. Send us a textResilience might be one of the most misunderstood aspects of mental health. Far more than just "bouncing back" or "toughing it out," true resilience is about developing mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility that allows you to adapt when life throws unexpected challenges your way.Have you ever noticed how some people seem to navigate life's difficulties with relative ease while others struggle significantly with similar challenges? The difference often comes down to resilience – and contrary to popular belief, it's not an innate trait but a skill that can be developed through intentional practice. In this deeply practical episode, we break down what mental resilience actually means and provide concrete strategies to help you build this crucial life skill. Drawing from psychological frameworks like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, we explain why physical well-being forms the foundation of mental resilience. The "big three pillars" – sufficient sleep, mindful nutrition, and regular physical activity – create the physiological conditions necessary for emotional stability and cognitive flexibility.Perhaps most importantly, we emphasize that resilience must be cultivated during good times so it's available during challenging ones. Think of it as developing "mental muscle memory" through consistent practice. Simple techniques like mindfulness exercises (we share a powerful thumb-to-finger exercise that engages both brain hemispheres), deep breathing patterns, and engaging in personally meaningful activities all contribute to stronger resilience.Whether you're currently facing difficulties or simply want to prepare for future challenges, this episode offers valuable insights that can help you develop the mental flexibility needed to navigate life's inevitable ups and downs with greater ease and confidence. This episode kicks off a three-part series on resilience, focusing the first installment on mental resilience and why fathers should model and teach it to the next generation. Hosts Jared and Ethan define mental resilience, outline core foundations—self-awareness, emotional regulation, cognitive flexibility, and purpose—and share personal stories and mindset shifts that illustrate how to adapt, recover, and grow through hardship. They identify common obstacles (learned helplessness, perfectionism, isolation, lack of recovery) and challenge listeners to "microdose" resilience by taking small, intentional risks and modeling tough, healthy habits for their kids. In this episode, we chat about… Mo's shift from working at Microsoft and AWS to becoming an entrepreneur Why most founders underestimate the mindset shift needed when leaving corporate life The difference between mental robustness and mental resilience Real stories of setbacks like a surprise $65,000 AWS bill and how mindset shaped the outcome How separating your personal identity from your business identity helps you recover from failure The role of daily discipline and having a “default calendar” to stay focused Why financial conditioning matters before starting a company How to turn setbacks into opportunities, sometimes even better ones than you planned Key Takeaways: Your business will only grow as much as your mindset grows. Mental robustness means withstanding pressure without breaking; resilience means bouncing back when you bend. Separate your identity from your company, you're more than your business. Discipline and structure keep you moving when motivation fades. Prepare financially before launching a business to reduce stress during hard times. Setbacks can be turned into better deals or opportunities if you respond quickly and with the right perspective. Welcome back to another episode of Know Your Physio—the podcast where we dive deep into the science of human potential and self-mastery. Today, I'm beyond excited to introduce a guest who truly embodies resilience and what it means to live with purpose: Dr. Chris Lee.Dr. Chris Lee is not only a neuroscientist but also an entrepreneur and, most importantly, a compassionate human being whose journey has been shaped by immense personal challenges. He's navigated the profound loss of his father, taken on the responsibility of being a single parent, and powered through the demanding grind of earning his doctorate. Through it all, Chris has developed an unparalleled understanding of the human nervous system and the true art of self-regulation.In this episode, we dive into Chris's personal “why”—a journey that started with heartache but has evolved into a beautiful, transformative philosophy. Chris shares his foundational mantra: “If the flower doesn't bloom, you don't blame the flower.” This mindset shift helped him reframe pain, purpose, and the environments that either limit or liberate us. It's a powerful way to look at adversity—not as something to avoid, but as the very fuel for growth. We talk about the stark difference between being driven by suffering versus being inspired by purpose. High performers, as Chris explains, often unknowingly uncover what truly regulates them and what doesn't. We also explore the science of emotional intelligence, the importance of co-regulation in relationships, and how to thrive in an overstimulated world through "low-stimulation" habits. This conversation is raw, real, and packed with insights that will challenge your understanding of success. It's an invitation to embrace discomfort, redefine what “winning” really means, and discover the “unf*ckable” version of yourself that emerges when you do the inner work. Trust me—you don't want to miss this one.
Imagine a moment when everything feels overwhelming, and the world seems too heavy to face. What if you had a hidden message—crafted by your own hand—that could quietly reach out to you in those darkest times? A letter waiting patiently for the stormiest days, ready to remind you of your strength, hope, and the light that still exists within. This isn't just any letter; it's a personal lifeline, a secret source of comfort and clarity designed to guide you back to yourself when you need it most. Intrigued? This is the power of a rainy-day letter—an intimate, heartfelt tool that transforms your toughest moments into opportunities for resilience and renewal.
Here are 4 powerful steps to building psychological resilience to help you navigate tough times: 1. Reframe Your Perspective Challenges are not roadblocks; they're stepping stones for growth. Practice asking: “What can I learn from this?” or “How is this shaping me for the better?” Adopting a growth mindset transforms setbacks into opportunities. 2. Strengthen Your Inner Dialogue Pay attention to the words you use with yourself—your self-talk can either fuel or drain you. Replace negative, catastrophic thinking with constructive statements like: “I've handled hard things before, and I can handle this too.” Daily affirmations or journaling can rewire your thought patterns. 3. Build Your Support System Resilience grows when you're not facing challenges alone. Reach out to trusted friends, mentors, or support networks. Sharing your challenges with others can lighten the mental load and provide fresh perspectives. 4. Take Small, Consistent Actions Focus on what you can control, not what you can't. Break big challenges into small, actionable steps—progress creates momentum. Prioritize self-care habits (exercise, sleep, nutrition) to strengthen mental and emotional stamina.
It's easy to get caught in the grind, chasing goals while your well-being quietly slips away. Burnout doesn't always show up as exhaustion—it can look like numbness, irritability, or just not caring anymore. And the hardest part is feeling like that pressure is the price of ambition. But deep down, most of us know success shouldn't feel like self-destruction. George Pitagorsky is a veteran project manager and mindfulness coach who blends tech leadership with decades of meditation practice. He's the author of The Peaceful Warrior's Path, a guide to reducing stress and improving performance through self-awareness. Today, he talks about using mindfulness to handle stress and stay focused in high-pressure environments. Send us a textWhat separates those who merely survive from those who truly thrive? Doug Wyatt's remarkable journey from a poor country kid to a multimillion-dollar business leader offers profound insights into sustainable success.Doug opens up about his dramatic physical transformation, shedding 82 pounds and completely rebuilding his health after reaching a crisis point at age 32. Rather than quick fixes, he reveals how small, consistent changes—from quitting soda to establishing a morning workout routine—created compounding results that eventually transformed every area of his life. The conversation takes a fascinating turn as Doug shares his time-optimization strategy that allows him to consume four hours of personal development content before most people have finished their first cup of coffee. By listening at 2x speed during his morning routine, he's able to continuously feed his mind while preparing his body for peak performance.Perhaps most compelling is Doug's vulnerable discussion about overcoming childhood trauma and how his father's suicide became a catalyst for his passion to improve human communication. This emotional depth grounds his business philosophy in something far more meaningful than profit margins—though his methods have proven extraordinarily effective at building profitable enterprises.Through practical frameworks like his "reticular activating system" concept, Doug demonstrates how our beliefs filter our perception of reality, affecting everything from our health choices to our sales outcomes. He challenges listeners to examine where they might be surrendering their power by blaming external circumstances rather than focusing on internal solutions.Whether you're struggling with health challenges, business growth plateaus, or relationship difficulties, this episode delivers actionable wisdom that integrates the spiritual, physical, and practical dimensions of creating a truly successful life. As Doug powerfully states, "You cannot have results and excuses at the same time." Teachhoops.com WintheSeason.com Dr Dish Website CoachingYouthHoops.com https://forms.gle/kQ8zyxgfqwUA3ChU7 Coach Collins Coaching Store Deterioration of Fundamentals: The decline of fundamental basketball skills is a significant issue in modern coaching. We often find that junior college coaches spend a considerable amount of time teaching basic defensive strategies that players should have already mastered. This lack of fundamentals is partly due to a shift in the focus of coaching. The game has become more about individual performance and less about team play. This is evident in the prevalent one-on-one style of play and the prioritization of money and fame over skill development. Challenges in Rural Areas: Coaching in rural areas presents unique challenges, such as smaller schools and less interest in basketball. For example, a team might start the season with ten players but end with only four due to various reasons, including lack of interest. Travel is another major challenge. Teams often have to travel long distances for games, which can be exhausting and time-consuming. This limits the opportunities for competition and development compared to urban areas, where local competition is more accessible. The European Model: One proposed solution to improve fundamentals is adopting the European model of youth basketball, where players practice more and play fewer games. In the U.S., the focus is often on playing multiple games with minimal practice, which hampers skill development. Shifting to a model where practice is prioritized could help players develop better fundamental skills. Impact of AAU and Summer Ball: The growth of AAU basketball has contributed to the decline of fundamentals. Unlike 20 years ago, when there was one AAU team per area, now there are numerous teams, many of which are not of high quality. This saturation dilutes the talent pool and creates a pay-to-play environment, where the focus is more on financial gain than skill development. This has led to a situation where many players are not prepared for higher levels of competition. Efforts to Improve Fundamentals: Despite these challenges, efforts are being made to improve the situation. For example, in Mississippi, a junior NBA league has been established with a focus on fundamental skills. Players are required to attend clinics to be eligible to play, ensuring they receive proper training. This model emphasizes practice and skill development over simply playing games. The Role of USA Basketball: USA Basketball is also trying to address the issue by promoting fundamental skills, but it faces an uphill battle against the commercialized aspects of youth basketball. The emphasis on individual performance and exposure over team play and skill development continues to be a significant barrier. Conclusion: The decline of fundamental basketball skills is a multifaceted issue that requires a collective effort to address. Coaches, parents, and basketball organizations need to prioritize skill development and team play over individual performance and financial gain. Adopting models that emphasize practice and skill development, like the European model, can help. Additionally, initiatives like junior NBA leagues can provide structured environments for players to develop their skills. Without these efforts, the foundation of basketball will continue to erode, affecting the future of the sport. Thank you for listening to this episode of High School Hoops. Get ready for an inspiring journey into the heart of adventure and purpose on this episode of The Outdoor Adventure Lifestyle Podcast! Host Rick Saez sits down with legendary polar explorer, speaker, and activist Sunniva Sorby. From her early days trading a computer programming job in Norway for a wild leap into outdoor leadership, to groundbreaking expeditions across Antarctica and the Arctic, Sunniva shares how embracing risk and finding her "tribe" at A16 shaped her life's trajectory. You can contact me here: rick@ricksaez.com From Boardroom to Blizzard: What Adventure Taught Me About Showing Up What Happened: I used to be a computer programmer in Norway. Yep—cubicles, keypads, and killer boredom. Until one day, I stumbled on a pamphlet during a visit to my mom in Montreal. It was for an outdoor leadership school in Alberta. A few weeks later, I'd quit my job, ditched the keyboard, and traded banking spreadsheets for snowshoes. That decision launched a life of adventure I never imagined—from working at A16, where I found my first “tribe,” to skiing across Antarctica, and even tracking a polar bear named Violet in the Arctic wilds. But here's what really shifted everything. After one particularly brutal expedition where I was sick, exhausted, and convinced I couldn't take one more step, I realized something that changed me forever: Strength isn't about pushing through until you collapse. It's about listening to your body, honoring your limits, and knowing when to ask for help. That moment stripped away my ego—and gave me something far more valuable: clarity. Principle: Too many of us think success means crossing the finish line—no matter the cost. But the truth is, the finish line isn't what matters most. It's who we become along the way. And if you're only measuring strength by how much you can endure, you're missing the deeper lesson adventure teaches: real courage is found in slowing down, tuning in, and showing up—again and again, even when it's hard. Transition: The problem is, most people wait for the "right time" to go after what they want. But that moment doesn't come with a red carpet. It often shows up disguised as fear, discomfort, or a tiny whisper that says: “There's more out there for you.” If you've ever felt stuck in your head, waiting for certainty before taking the next step—you're not alone. It's not that you're lazy or lacking discipline. You've just never been shown a different way to move forward that honors your humanity and your ambition. That's Why: That's why we recorded this episode. To remind you that the wild isn't just out there—it's in you. Whether you're chasing polar bears or your next big idea, your journey doesn't have to look like anyone else's. But it does have to start with one thing: action. Call to Action: Feel stuck in your own head and unsure how to take the next step? That uncertainty isn't a dead-end—it's your invitation. Tune in to this episode and learn how outdoor adventure teaches us to push past fear and step into purpose, one moment (and one polar bear) at a time.
