Valerie David, also known as The Pink Hulk, is a three-time cancer survivor (non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, stage 2 breast cancer, and stage 4 metastatic breast cancer) who turned her journey of resilience into an award-winning one-woman show. Through humor, raw honesty, and advocacy, she inspires audiences worldwide—proving that even cancer won't stop her from taking center stage.Check out Valerie's show, The Pink Hulk here: https://pinkhulkplay.comKey Highlights:- Valerie trusted her inner voice when symptoms appeared, even when doctors initially dismissed them. If you are able to get second opinions, advocate for yourself, and listen to your gut, you'll find this to be useful in other parts of your own life.- Balancing intuition with fear over symptoms can be tricky, but Valerie advises: don't panic over nothing, don't choose to live in fear. Instead, stay proactive by communicating with your care team about any arising symptoms.About our guest:Valerie David is an actor, playwright, writer and editor. Her greatest accomplishment in life is being a three-time cancer survivor. She was diagnosed and treated for Stage III Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 1999, Stage II Breast Cancer in 2014 and 2015, and Stage IV Breast Cancer in 2018. As of April 2019, she has beaten cancer again! Valerie reactivated her superhero within, and exactly 5 months after receiving hormone treatment only in pill form–no surgery, no radiation, no chemotherapy, Valerie no longer has active disease. She has since kept up a full schedule of performances–nothing has stopped her. Valerie's inspirational solo show, The Pink Hulk, has been accepted into almost 50 different play festivals worldwide since its 2016 debut, won multiple awards and has been touring since its very first performance, impacting audiences with the show's universal message of hope and empowerment. She has performed in over 25 different cities and globally, including in England, Sweden, Iceland, and Finland. A graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, her credits include the Off-Broadway production of A Stoop on Orchard Street, Cookie in Rumors and Claudia Shear's Blown Sideways Through Life. Films: How I Became that Jewish Guy, which premiered at a November 2015 NYC Film Festival, and Bridges and Tunnels. Valerie volunteers as a motivational speaker at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training events and Make-A-Wish Foundation. As a marathon cyclist, she co-founded Cycle of Hope, which raises money for national and international cancer organizations through bike marathons. Her most recent biking event raised almost $5,000 for the American Cancer Society and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.Key Moments:At 7 minutes 28 seconds “What is my choice? Is my choice going to live in fear every single day? Is it going to be well, we'll deal with it when it happens. So I think what I've learned from cancer is don't worry until there's something to worry about.”Disclaimer: All content and information provided in connection with Manta Cares is solely intended for informational and educational purposes only. Too many real estate pros settle for “good enough,” believing the next level, more listings, higher commissions, true freedom, is out of reach.  The truth is: real estate success doesn't come from luck, it comes from clarity, confidence, and the courage to ask for what you want. Top producers aren't just winging it. They're intentional. They ask bold questions. They go after mentorship. They're clear on where they're headed and who can help them get there. You can get what you want in this business, but it starts with asking the right questions and being specific about what you're after.  Whether that's finding the right mentor, learning from someone who's built what you're trying to build, or getting access to resources that shortcut your learning curve. In this episode, I'm joined by award-winning author and entrepreneur Greg Reid. We dive into how to go after the life and business you want, and why you should never let someone's opinion become your limit.   A dream written down with a date becomes a goal. A goal broken down into steps becomes a plan. A plan backed by action makes your dreams come true. -Greg Reid   What You'll Learn in This Episode Leverage your strengths, manage your weaknesses We have to build our businesses around what we do best. How do we grow without letting weak spots hold us back? The difference between opinions and counsel Most agents get stuck taking advice from people who've never built what they're trying to build. How do we find counsel instead of opinions? The power of connections Strategic relationships can open doors to listings, partnerships, and life-changing growth. How do we network with purpose? Guest Bio For over 25 years, Greg has inspired millions of people to take personal responsibility to step into the potential of their greatness and, as such, his life of contribution has been recognized by government leaders, a foreign Princess, as well as luminaries in education, business, and industry. Titles such as Stickability: The Power of Perseverance; The Millionaire Mentor, and Three Feet from Gold: Turn Your Obstacles into Opportunities have inspired countless readers to understand that the most valuable lessons we learn are also the easiest ones to apply.  Greg Reid is known best for being Founder of Secret Knock, a Forbes and Inc. The primary goal of this outreach effort is to ensure that more West Virginians understand if they are eligible for the program, know how to apply and have the necessary information to complete their applications.  The UI program serves as a vital financial support system for individuals and their families during periods of unemployment or underemployment, providing a safety net until full-time employment is secured.  Individuals who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to file their UI claims online at uc.workforcewv.org. For those who may have limited access to computers or the internet, WorkForce West Virginia local offices are equipped with necessary resources including computers for filing UI claims.  Read more: https://workforcewv.org/workforce-west-virginias-unemployment-insurance-program-initiative-connects-unemployed-and-underemployed-west-virginians-with-resources/   #2 – From NEWS & SENTINEL – Renovation work is continuing on the Stott Administration Building on the former campus of Ohio Valley University to turn it into the new Innovation and Technology Center at West Virginia University at Parkersburg.  WVUP President Torie Jackson says it's all about vision when it comes to helping the area grow with new educational opportunities. The IT Center is expected to open for classes in the fall.  A second phase, occurring simultaneously, will be setting up the new daycare facility in the former OVU Library space. Jackson said OVU's chapel space will be left intact as a meeting space and to be rented out for weddings. The old OVU kitchen could be updated at some point into a commercial kitchen facility and they are looking for someone who might be able to convert the former cafeteria into a restaurant. “What we are doing here has the potential to change Vienna for generations, because it is a project that allows for a housing development over time, allows for schools to be located and it allows for many businesses to have opportunities here in Vienna,” she said. Laura DeKraker Lang-Ree, Gen X, is a cancer mom and advocate for parents of children with cancer. She empowers families going through medical trauma with tools and tactics to help them navigate their new everyday normal. Her book, Thru the Fire, Empowering Parents of Kids with Cancer takes us through her journey once the pediatrician said her 3-year-old daughter Cecilia's lethargy and black circles under her eyes were childhood leukemia. She entered the panickedexistence of childhood cancer. Ceal had an 85 percent chance of surviving – that is, IF she made it through 2½ years of grueling treatment. Meaning Ceal had a 15 percent chance of dying. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Emotions experienced during crisis“Positude” Advocacy InsightsHealth care beliefsResilienceAsking for helpGratitudeBoundary SettingQuotable Moments: “Cancer is not an in and out kind of experience. It hangs around a long time, like years.” “I think advocacy is one of the most underrated things in the whole health care system that we can imagine.” “Health care professionals want us to advocate because it helps them help us.” “Advocacy is key to the care of our child and ourselves.” *You just need to understand she's never going to do math or science.” “There has to be another way!”“An important piece of advocacy is to level the playing field with knowledge.” “Health care professionals need us and want us to be a part of the medical team.” “Surrending and accepting is not giving up, it's actually giving you power.” “Have you considered she's the hope?” Three Episode Takeaways: 1.    Cancer is an all-hands on deck kind of journey. Laura has included chapters in her book specific to parents, friends, family (grandparents), and caregivers. 2.    “Positude” is Cecilia's word that can help allof us. It means to have a positive attitude when we're facing things head-on like she did. It is up to us to change our narrative so we can manage and have agency because we've advocated for ourselves. Things go a lot more smoothly.3.   Giving our kids the tools to advocate for themselves can help everyone manage and create a calmer atmosphere. The aim of Laura's book is to give you the tools to ask thequestions so you can then make choices.  More About Laura:Laura is an editor and consultant with Stanford Children'sHospital and a writer, educator, and editor for parent publications at the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Jacob's Heart Family Cancer Center, and Bass Center for ChildhoodCancer and Blood Diseases. Is your image telling your story as intended? How to look better and real on camera Episode 228 (Maia is based in Chicago) In this conversation with Maia Rosenfeld we explore: How do other judge you based on your photograph? How a photographer first needs to understand you How to stop sabotaging your photographs What a better word than "cheese" The power of visual messages on trust The first impression when we see your photo on Linkedin How might the photograph convey your brand? Why do people check their reflection when they walk by store windows About our guest, Maia Rosenfeld: Maia has been a headshot photographer in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York for 28 years. Some of her corporate clients include BMW, J.P. Morgan Chase, Salesforce, GE Healthcare and The Make-A-Wish Foundation. She's never met a stranger. Learn more about her photography services at MRPCreative.com ----- Excerpts from this conversation with Maia Rosenfeld: Is it welcoming? Do you look smart? Do you look like you're good at what you do? Do you look like someone they want to spend the time reading the next little blurb that's probably only three sentences underneath their chin, getting to figure out what is the unique thing, the differentiator of each client that comes into my studio to figure out how to tell their story, to make sure that their authenticity is represented, is the thing right. ----- I'm not particularly interested in taking photographs of what you look like. Lucky for me, you already look like what you look like. Thank you very much. I'm interested in taking photos of who you are. ----- I've come up with a game that they do, which is I throw a word out at them, and they just repeat that word inside their brain. They just have to think it. So if I say to you, just with your eyes, say the word power, if you literally just think the word power, you're done. You don't have to give me what you think a powerful look is. You don't have to define power. You don't have to think of a ton you once felt powerful. Literally, I say power. You say power. I say cat, you say cat. And why does it work? It works because it keeps George inside the building. That is George, where people tend to derail themselves in photos, any photo, family photo, picture, it out with your friends. Is the second the camera comes up. Everyone tends to leave the building, right? We're in a big group of people. We say cheese. We don't know how long it's taking. We don't know how many they're taking. Our faces kind of freeze. We don't know it's, oh, it's the other camera. Are they using a flash? We get that photo back, and we hate how we look, right? You're not in that photo. You left at least 15 seconds ago, right? So that is one of the places that we derail ourselves and we don't we start to hate how we look. Now we live in a world, in this selfie culture, where you can watch yourself in the photo, right? Which is almost even worse of a problem. It makes it even more self conscious, right?  ----- ----more---- Your Intended Message is the podcast about how you can boost your career and business success by honing your communication skills.
