Welcome to part two of Old Ales and Barleywines. In part one, we covered old ales, this week, we're exploring the American side of these styles. Barleywine used to be huge among craft beer nerds, it was the hot beer style and was often viewed as a thank you from breweries to their hardcore fans. Drink along at home or start your own vertical with the following beers: Anchor Old Foghorn Barleywine Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Three Floyds Barrel Aged Behemoth If you have a question for the Barrel to Bottle Crew, email us at comments@binnys.com, or reach out to us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Pat considers himself an adventurous guy. Drinking a bunch of old ale and barleywine when it's 100º is not his idea of adventurous though. Luckily the studio is cold, and the fan is on so he should be quite comfortable drinking all these heavy, high alcohol beers. Roger has been planning this episode for a very long time. He has verticals, he has barrel-aged variants. He even has a beer that he had to hunt down and bring into our Willowbrook location. Chris is a barleywine aficionado, who had the foresight to age barleywines. Start cellaring your own North Coast Old Stock ale now. After reviewing the boys' homebrewed Old Ales, modeled after Founders' Old Curmudgeon, they reluctantly discuss the madness surrounding the trans agenda. Men are men and women are women, but saying something as obvious and true as that is now an edgy, dangerous thing. You risk your career, your reputation, and might get banned from social media. Well, the boys say it, and a lot more. The trans emperor not only has no clothes, he's got no clue, and no argument. It's simple madness from first to last.
After finding 2 Old Ales on tap in 2 different breweries, I figured it must be some kind of signThis is my first, and I'm reasonably sure not my last, attempt at an English Old Ale. A rich, strong, malty, sweet, bordering on decadent ale that, when done right, can be a magnificent treat. This is the first part of a two-part video. In part 1 I go through the style, recipe, and brewing of my first version an Old Ale! To see the full video version of this episode visit: https://youtu.be/5JIfNc06EZc
Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong BeerThese are a Strong Ale aged in either a wooden barrel or in contact with wood. Strong Ale - A catch-all style category for beers from 7 percent alcohol by volume and above. Some may even be as high as 20 percent ABV. As a result, color, aroma, and flavor characteristics will greatly vary; some have similarities to Barleywines and Old Ales. Wood and Barrel Aged Strong Beers are aged with the intention of developing unique attributes imparted by the wood and/or by liquids that had previously been stored in contact with the wood. Wood aging does not necessarily impart wood flavors, but does result in distinctive sensory outcomes. Used sherry, rum, whiskey, tequila, port, wine and other barrels are often used, imparting complexity and uniqueness to a beer. A balance of aroma, flavor and mouthfeel results from the marriage of new beer with attributes imparted by the wood or barrel. We age our Mighty Ale (Strong Ale 8%) in Jim Beam Barrels and add local NH Maple Syrup. First introduced in the winter of 1983, Bigfoot is a cult-classic beer brewed in the barleywine style, meaning a strong, robust, bruiser of a beer with the refined intensity of a wine. Bigfoot is prized by beer collectors for its supreme cellarability. Under the proper conditions, it can age like a fine wine, developing new flavors and character as it matures in the bottle. Each new release or “expedition” is vintage dated. Are you Worthy of quaffing a beverage of this intensity, irreverence and quality craftsmanship? Not likely, but for those who “get it,” I know my time in this bourbon barrel has not been wasted. It’s been almost two years since we first recorded in the legendary Chicago institution, and as much as things have changed, Goose Island Clybourn is still about creative small batches from some of the most passionate brewers around. Brewers Jon and Steve join us to talk about the implications of the sale to AB InBev including equipment upgrades, recipe ownership, franchising the brewpub model, and the public reaction to “selling out.” They also pour us some unbelievable beers, including maybe our first recorded experience with a “ghost whale.” Also expect to hear about their current issues with brewing sour beers, how they handle bottle releases and determine pricing, and a little teaser regarding Belgian Fest. Steve also absolutely schools us on Old Ales and Stock Ales, Jon gets to bask in his proudest beer-naming moments, and we all give some sweet love to Cory King. This one is chock full of goofs and goodies, folks, so grab a few beers and enjoy. Beers Tasted: Sara Later (Belgian pale ale) Cran-Bruin (Oud Bruin with cranberries aged in red wine barrels) Barrel-Aged Dark Crusader Coconut (Imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels with coconut added during bottling) Nutulhu (Imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels with toasted hazelnuts and vanilla beans) Side Project Brewing - Saison du Fermier Pinot (Wild saison aged in pinot noir puncheons)
