We are exploring the brewing possiblities of Sweden. Stjernsund Brygghus is exploring a style not often seen in Sweden. California Commons is brewed with lager yeast but fermented at ale fermentation temperatures. It was made famous by Anchor Brewing Company. It's an interesting attempt at the style. Oceanbryggeriet likes to do cask ales and traditional styles. Special Strong Ale is an English Strong Ale. This style is a malty, lightly hopped and bitter ale with a bit of alcohol warmth. This one comes in at 7.2% ABV and fits the bill. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #californiacommons #strongale

Good Morning from San Diego!Hello everyone and welcome to episode 12 of The Beerded Guru. Patrick and Jess had the chance to pop into a “still closed” 504 Craft Beer Reserve who is working feverishly to reopen and serve up those frosty beverages. In the meantime, thanks to our dear friend Steve, we have the opportunity to try out a Strong Ale from Cerebral Brewery in Denver Colorado. The Southern Jewel Strong Ale is barreled with all the flavors of a Sazerac cocktail (a classic New Orleans drink) and is a spectacular example of blended flavors balanced through and through. Segways include Patricks journey into his memory as a mixologist and Jessie's exploration in matching shirts and hats. Enjoy!

Struise Brouwers (http://struise.beer) is scrappy, in the best sense of the word. Small and underfunded from the start, they've always made the best of what they have, and figured out no-cost solutions to brewing problems. After all, you can't spend money you don't have. Today, the brewery operates with a brewhouse that is as unique as their beers—two mash tuns, with internal vessels and screens that lift and drain the mash, to feed three separate kettles. The team brews four turns per day on the system, filling a fermentor one-quarter full as fermentation starts. Over the following days, subsequent brews fill the tank as the carefully controlled fermentation progresses. By adjusting the mash temperatures of each day's brews, they're able to approximate a step-mash regimen without tight temperature control and automation in the brewhouse. In this episode, cofounder Urbain Coutteau discusses the creative and the technical, including: building a bridge to stout for Belgian beer enthusiasts with Pannepot controlling the use of simple sugars to avoid astringency rebuilding the Pannepot recipe without spices but with a wild Saccharomyces strain the conceptual framework for their unique brewhouse setup designing a brewhouse to achieve specific flavor goals controlling fermentation to allow multi-day tank fills without stressing yeast relying on ingenuity more than investment the brewery's best-in-class water treatment system that nearly eliminates water waste clever use of automation to create water profiles, reducing staff time using a familiar ale yeast strain to ferment big Belgian beers And more. Launched on a shoestring budget, the Struise team has always had to rely on clever problem-solving—what Coutteau refers to as “peasant intelligence.” That spirit is alive and well at the brewery today, scaled to address bigger challenges, in bigger ways. Alan Sprints wanted to be a chef, but the hours were going to be terrible and he wanted to raise a family, so he went into brewing instead. That was to the great benefit to all of us because his dedication to styles that were not mainstream, or even sessionable meant the creation of building blocks that the entire US craft industry stands on today. From the early days of Oregon craft beer, to brewing beers that are meant to be cellared, to legacy and beyond, his perspective is unparalleled and he does not hold back in this wide-ranging conversation. Bells Eccentric Collaboration Ale 2020 is a Strong Ale by style. Collaborations can get a little crazy… so we embrace it. Our friends from Gigantic Brewing in Portland came to our brewery with a special ingredient: Fruitcake from an Oregon monastery to make this eccentrically unique beer aged in brandy barrels. Available exclusively at the Bell's General Store. This craft beer is 13.3% ABV. In this craft beer review, we will take a look at the color, smell, and taste.
On this episode of Heavy Hitters, the guys sip on a serious and beastly brew that Chris was able to haul back from while in Chicago recently. Technically a Strong Ale, Orin gets it's power from the fact that it is a blended beer both in terms or malt bill and aging. A powerful trick seldom seen in the craft beer world, it creates a combination that is out of this world. Join us as we dive into the mastery that Half Acre Beer has put together!

While discussing this delightfully strong Belgian beer style, we also dip in and out of conversations about serving beer in schools, offensive beer names, and the DTs. Oh, and there are some spoilers for the 2015 film The VVitch, so consider yourself warned.

We welcome homebrewer Colin to Dr. Homebrew! Colin was on show #179, so it's been a hot minute. In podcast terms, anyway. Tom had a 1 in 400 shot at winning a classic Strong Ale and somehow he lucked out. One condition of that win was that he needed to write a review of that beer, 2018 Royal Oil from Bull & Bush, so the boys reviewed it on this week's episode. Unfortunately, they still can't figure out the difference between a strong ale and a barleywine. Also, Stone Brewing from Escondido, CA has entered the world of corporate America by suing every small company that uses the word stone...this is not an exaggeration. Finally, a legendary New Jersey hardcore band mashes it up with a local brewery to create magic. After all, beer and music is why God created the weekend. All this and more on a new episode of America The BREW-tiful!
Welcome to yet another Covid-19 Isolation Episode. We still have yet to fix the poor audio quality, and we're sticking with our 'Adelaide internet' defense as that's easier than blaming ourselves. This episode deals with all things 'IPA'. This amazing beer style almost defines craft beer. Hoppy. Malty. Alcoholic. Able to be modified, and enjoyed in a miriad of ways. We discuss the differences between a 'White IPA', a 'Red IPA', and a 'Black IPA', and talk about the brew days, and recipes associated with each delicious beer in 'Segment 1'. If Mike, or Luke could get their shit together, I'd be able to put a link to the recipe. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Keep checking back to see how long it takes for the 'TBC' to change into a useable link. In 'Segment 2' we talk about the origins of the 'India Pale Ale', and we compare the homebrewed beers to a commercial equivalent. We finalise the show in 'Segment 3' by revisting a game from the first show of Season 2, called 'Name That Beer', we enjoy a round of 'Simmo Says' with the man himself, and we continue our brand new game, called 'Brew-Busters'. Enjoy. We're on Instagram: @craftbeerbanter @koegles @vikingthiccdicc @asimmo90 We're on the e-mail: chris@craftbeerbanter.com You can find the recipes here: TBC. (Fucking Mike, and Luke)
It's episode 105 and this week Jim and Ted are together in the same studio enjoying a bourbon barrel aged Strong Ale. They talk about their week, what they've been watching, and The French Dispatch and The Green Knight trailers.

Beer, cheese, and baseball legends with AleSmith's Peter Zien We caught AleSmith Brewing owner and CEO Peter Zien right after his return (and medal win) at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. Zien serves as a judge at the beer competition where a record number of beers were presented this year. AleSmith was founded in 1995 with Zien purchasing the brewery in 2002. The brewery has grown a lot in that time and boasts one of California's largest tasting rooms. After purchasing the brewery, Zien tells us he missed homebrewing. He's tried many hobbies since then including curing olives, candle and soapmaking, and cheesemaking. The cheesemaking stuck and CheeseSmith now shares space with the brewery. We also talk about San Diego Pale Ale .394, a collaboration brew with Padres legend and Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. We hear how AleSmith got the called up to the mound for the collaboration and the progression of the beer after the unfortunate passing of Gwynn. Of course, we sample some beers as we chat, including the .394, Juice Stand, and a 2016 Speedway Stout. AleSmith's Private Stock Ale took Gold in the Old Ale or Strong Ale category at the 2019 Great American Beer Festival. (Photo: AleSmith Brewing) Craft Beer News News from the Great American Beer Festival Next Week on Beer Guys Radio We'll talk about America's beer history with the Chicago Brewseum. Listen in as we taste Fred, a Golden Strong Ale, from Hair of The Dog Brewing Company. If there's anything you'll remember from this episode, it's that this beer had crazy good head retention, lol. In the intro, we mention Soktoberfest 2019. An event where we try to collect as many socks as possible for the homeless in our community. Tonight we’re joined by a very special guest, our friend Skye Borgman who directed tonight’s film Abducted In Plain Sight. You may have watched it recently on Netflix, if not you’re one of the few who haven’t sat in front of the screen with your jaw hanging on the ground in total disbelief at this remarkable documentary. We treat this episode like a real-time director’s commentary where the TNCC crew does its usual thing of talking their way through a film BUT with the added invaluable addition of the filmmaker sitting at the table with us to answer our questions. Of which there are many. It’s a really unique show so watch or listen below! Now!! DO IT!!! Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong BeerThese are a Strong Ale aged in either a wooden barrel or in contact with wood. Strong Ale - A catch-all style category for beers from 7 percent alcohol by volume and above. Some may even be as high as 20 percent ABV. As a result, color, aroma, and flavor characteristics will greatly vary; some have similarities to Barleywines and Old Ales. Wood and Barrel Aged Strong Beers are aged with the intention of developing unique attributes imparted by the wood and/or by liquids that had previously been stored in contact with the wood. Wood aging does not necessarily impart wood flavors, but does result in distinctive sensory outcomes. Used sherry, rum, whiskey, tequila, port, wine and other barrels are often used, imparting complexity and uniqueness to a beer. A balance of aroma, flavor and mouthfeel results from the marriage of new beer with attributes imparted by the wood or barrel. We age our Mighty Ale (Strong Ale 8%) in Jim Beam Barrels and add local NH Maple Syrup. First introduced in the winter of 1983, Bigfoot is a cult-classic beer brewed in the barleywine style, meaning a strong, robust, bruiser of a beer with the refined intensity of a wine. Bigfoot is prized by beer collectors for its supreme cellarability. Under the proper conditions, it can age like a fine wine, developing new flavors and character as it matures in the bottle. Each new release or “expedition” is vintage dated. Are you Worthy of quaffing a beverage of this intensity, irreverence and quality craftsmanship? Not likely, but for those who “get it,” I know my time in this bourbon barrel has not been wasted.
