Is this one of our author episodes or should it fall into our Irish Drinks category because your co-hosts have grabbed a table by the pot-bellied stove at New York's legendary McSorley's Old Ale House for a conversation with author, cultural creator, and impresario Charles R. Hale.Charles is known for curating lively artistic salons, producing eclectic concerts, and presenting original performance pieces that blend music, imagery, video, and storytelling. We focus on his deeply personal new book Untangling the Shadows: Searching for the Voices of my New York Irish Ancestors. Part memoir, part family history, and something of a detective story, the book traces his search in New York and Ireland for the clues to “untangling the shadows” of his family's stories.Over light and dark ale, we delve into his Irish roots, family history, his unlikely path to a creative life, and the diverse art forms he explores. Why McSorley's? Charles wrote parts of his book at the same table we're sitting at, the place is dripping with Irish American history, and McSorley's has been the muse of artists ranging from famed chronicler of New York Joseph Mitchell to Ashcan school painter John Sloan. Everyone from Abe Lincoln to John Lennon has passed through McSorley's swinging doors since it opened in 1854. It remains a welcoming refuge where one good ale inevitably leads to another…if you follow their one golden rule:Be Good or Begone. We were—Sláinte!Charles Hale Links:Websites:Charles R. Curmudgeon is an old ale brewed with molasses and aged on oak; it becomes Better Half after aging—for 254 days—in bourbon barrels that have more recently been aging Michigan maple syrup. As a result, Curmudgeon's Better Half is a bit sweeter than her miserly counterpart. This beer is 12.7% ABV and 45 IBUs. In this beer review, we will look at the color, smell, and taste.

Last year's release of Prize Old Ale was a real highlight for many fans of excellent beer. But the journey of this storied beverage, that classic fruity, strong, dark ale, goes back somewhat further.Originally a recipe from George Gales & Co, a great deal of interest was generated by the latest version of Prize Old Ale, which was brewed at Dark Star by head brewer Henry Kirk.According to John Keeling, the former brewing director at Fuller's and a previous colleague of his, Henry made a version of great character and personality –  much like himself. For those that don't know, Henry is a celebrated brewer. Previously the head brewer at Dark Star and has worked in a variety of breweries including Fullers over the past 12 years. He is also passionate about old British styles and cask beer. In this podcast, he recounts the rich history of this revered beverage and his role in ensuring its story was kept alive. And thanks to Henry, you can refer to his presentation, which is linked right here. You can also read John Keeling's article on the story Prize Old Ale in his own words.

For almost 30 years, Alan Sprints and his Portland, Oregon brewery Hair of the Dog pioneered American craft beer through some of the earliest barrel-aging experiments and developed potent beers built for aging, creating some of the original “whales” in the process. Once Alan decided to retire and close his legendary brewery in June of 2022, Craig booked a trip to experience Hair of the Dog for a final time and to get Mr. Sprints on the microphone to reflect on his career and look ahead to the joys of retirement. In addition to the interview, we are fortunate to drink through five Hair of the Dog beers and cross off a significant line on our beer bucket lists. The problem is that outrage spreads faster than sensible talk. A Republic requires time to slow things down and insulate public policy from the mania of the moment. After purchasing the brewery, Zien tells us he missed homebrewing.  He's tried many hobbies since then including curing olives, candle and soapmaking, and cheesemaking.  The cheesemaking stuck and CheeseSmith now shares space with the brewery. We also talk about San Diego Pale Ale .394, a collaboration brew with Padres legend and Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn.  We hear how AleSmith got the called up to the mound for the collaboration and the progression of the beer after the unfortunate passing of Gwynn. This is a big beer, and I need to make sure there's enough yeast to ferment everything. In Part 2 covering the Old Ale, I start off by checking on the current state of the fermentation then propagate some more yeast from my yeast bank to make sure there's enough to finish this beer properly. After bottling and condition, I give the Old Ale it's first taste after 30 days. But this won't be the last taste. To see the full video version of this episode visit: https://youtu.be/BkhZoqGjZCE

A rich, strong, malty, sweet, bordering on decadent ale that, when done right, can be a magnificent treat. This is the first part of a two-part video. Season 3, Episode 27 – This week, beers from AleSmith Brewing Company and Bottle Logic Brewing. Happy Independence Day! This week, we’re keeping the blog post short and sweet. There are vegan hamburgers to be grilled and beers to be drank. This week, we’re drinking some pretty hefty beers from Founders, AleSmith, and Bottle Logic.  Before we get too deep into it, we’re gonna start with a trip inside the 4B Mailbag with some Founders Backwoods Bastard. Speaking of which, we’re asking for your beer haikus. Feeling creative? Send us yours at feedback@fourbrewers.com. Founders, AleSmith, and Bottle Logic Brewing Next up are three beers that really showcase what’s going on in the SoCal beer scene. AleSmith Brewing Company’s Private Stock Ale and Mexican Speedway Stout are first up. Private Stock Ale is an Old Ale that was made for aging. AleSmith even encourages you to do this. Why? Because, man, IS IT HOT! So much booze on this beer, it’s crazy! But, that’s by design. AleSmith knows what they’re doing and when they tell you to age this beer, you should. Buy a few bottles and open them over the course of five or six years. The booziness should mellow out over time, allowing the beer to really shine. Drink a bottle fresh as a baseline for comparison and then another in a year or two. Hell, buy a case and really geek out with cellaring… AleSmith makes killer stout—probably the best in the world, according to certain folks. Speedway Stout is a classic coffee stout that lends itself well to barrel aging. This version, Mexican Speedway Stout, is a blend of fresh Speedway Stout and tequila barrel-aged Speedway Stout with cinnamon, Mexican coffee and Mexican Chocolate. The balanced of these particular ingredients in beer is critical, and AleSmith nails it—this beer is fantastic. Bottle Logic Brewing – Fundamental Observation We end the show with a beer that needs no introduction, Bottle Logic Brewing’s Fundamental Observation. This beer is the whale-iest of SoCal whales. It’s a fantastic blend of barrel aged stout that literally smells like alcohol infused brownies. While drinking this beer, we talk about beer geeks and beer culture in general and how the scene has changed over that last five years or so. Spoiler: John goes on a rant… BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT.
