All hail the golden age of beer! Today there are nearly nine thousand breweries in the US alone, brewing an enormous range of styles from imperial stouts to double India pale ales, golden pilsners, briny melon goses, and much more. But while this breadth can delight the taste buds all year, how does one choose what to drink without feeling overwhelmed or defaulting to the same brews again and again? Acclaimed beer expert Tom Acitelli presents a fifty-two week guide to choosing the perfect beer to complement every week of the year. With tasting notes, brand recommendations, a guide to how to best serve, sip, and savor, plus fascinating backstories and trivia, Acitelli unearths what beer lovers actually care about and reveals how to appreciate the best that the golden age of beer has to offer. You can get a copy of the book HERERecorded at Notch Brewing - Brighton( Boston) March 5, 2025

This month on the Sustainability Solved Podcast, our hosts Will Richardson and Charlie Luxton delve into the world of sustainable brewing. Joining them from Berlin is Roland Pahl-Dobrick, the Beer Market Manager from Pall Filtration, to shed light on the intricacies and challenges of sustainability in brewing.Brewing Process and Impact:- Unlike wine filtration, beer filtration faces unique challenges due to its scale, volume, and sensitivity as a product.- The conversation highlights the staggering waste generated by filtration processes in the brewing industry, estimated to reach tens of millions of tonnes.- Traditional beer filtration using Diatomaceous Earth (DE), a fossilised algae, produces substantial waste, rendering it unfit for recycling or reuse, particularly problematic for large breweries.Sustainability Challenges and Progress in Brewing:- Roland discusses the industry's movement away from DE filtration toward membrane-based filtration, which significantly curbs waste production by over 90%, leading to substantial water savings and reductions in carbon footprint.- Advancements in brewing technology have notably slashed water usage by up to 80% from previous decades. Future of Sustainable Brewing:- Brewing companies are increasingly adopting robust sustainability programmes aimed at minimising waste, enhancing operational efficiency, and prioritising environmentally friendly production processes.- Consumer preferences, particular amongst the younger demographic, are driving companies to embrace eco-friendly technologies, aligning with evolving market demands.- Roland explains how attention is also being directed toward addressing the environmental impact of packaging, including efforts to lightweight materials, explore reusable packaging options, and consider more sustainable transportation methods. William Eddins is a Minnesotan who makes music … and beer. How does a world-class orchestra conductor end up co-owner of a brewery? It started during the COVID-19 pandemic when orchestras abruptly canceled live performances and Eddins found himself out of work with time on his hands. He and a friend turned their beer-making hobby into MetroNOME brewery in downtown St. Paul, with the goal of raising money to pay for music instruments and instruction for Twin Cities children and teens. The brewery's music venue only seats 50 people, but Eddins is pulling in some big names. Jazz trumpet legend Wynton Marsalis played an impromptu gig at MetroNOME last fall. And, Eddins is preparing for a piano recital on June 3 when the taproom celebrates the first anniversary of its grand opening. MPR News guest host Euan Kerr talks with Eddins about his international music career, beer and the brewery's mission. Guests: Bill Eddins is music director emeritus of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Alberta, Canada and a frequent guest conductor of major orchestras throughout the world. Welcome to Times Will Tell, The Times of Israel's weekly feature podcast. This week, host Amanda Borschel-Dan speaks with archaeologist Prof. Jennie Ebeling about women's live in ancient Israel. In addition to leading and participating in archaeological excavations in Israel and Jordan, Ebeling is sculpting the next generation of scholars through her teaching at the University of Evansville in Indiana. She has written extensively about ancient food and drink technology which can offer a deeper look at women in antiquity, including a book, “Women's Lives in Biblical Times.” One of the ways we can learn about women's agency is through studying ancient ovens, said Ebeling, which in part has led her to hypothesize that women were the master brewers of ancient Israel. Every bottle of Budweiser or Heineken is made to taste the exact same wherever you're drinking around the world…and that gets boring. Cue, Craft Beer & Craft Breweries — smaller breweries that are popping up everywhere and making refreshing new twists to the world's most widely consumed alcohol. Think pepper infused beers, or yam beer! They may seem new or even outlandish, but craft beers borrow from beer's beginnings — a pre-industrial time when people made beer from ingredients found in their houses, like bananas, rice, and corn. On this episode, we stop by Igbadun Brewing, a microbrewery in Lagos that's following the cue of brewers in countries like Japan & the US, and bringing local flavours back to beer. We also speak with Jon Bazie of Tioga-Sequoia, a craft brewery making cool beers in sunny California. It's all about bringing local flavours back to beer this episode. Enjoy!

By the middle ages, brewing and selling ale provided women a way to work and achieve "good profits, social power, and some measure of independence from men"—especially compared to other trades, which did not. Yet after the Black Plague, societal changes led to men dominating in the field of brewing—which still continues today.
