We love the fall. The leaves change colors. The temperature gets colder. Stouts and Barleywines appear on the shelves. Autum brings so many wonderful changes. Evil Twin has brewed over a 1000 beers in their NYC brewery. How do we know? They released a beer called Batch No 1000 Brewed in NYC. This is an old ale made with maple syrup. While it's not a stout or a barleywine, it is a 13% ABV big boy. Danish brewers Bad Seed don't show up on shelves in Sweden very often. It's no surprise that Stefan found this in Copenhagen. Bourbon Barrel Aged Colossus 2023 is a English barleywine aged in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels. It's keeping us warm for sure. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #barleywine #oldale #barrelaged
Welcome back to the Manor! We've done another of our favorite styles of episodes... one that starts with some decent notes, but then evolves/devolves into realms of fantasticaltudes. We were just going to discuss barleywines, that most magical of beers, and we did. We talked about its history, its style, what to pair it with, and similar beers (winter warmers, old ales, strong ales, etc.). But then we went into dangling participles and why its okay to dangle your prepositions, into Xmas puddings, and so much more. It's at least 45 minutes of fun in a nearly 90 minute episode. Pour yourself a barleywine and enjoy! Next week's episode is about the continuation of our D&D 50th anniversary series!. We sat down with our friends Zach and Cliff at Truck & Tap along with our new friend Tiffany Dillon of Gwen Tajz wine bar. We poked some beers, we mulled some wines (wine wine and barleywine) and we talked about serving traditionally cooler beverages warmer. Luckily, when we recorded the show it was a seasonally-appropriate cooler temperature, the only cool day in the last couple of weeks actually. While the image of a frosty mug overflowing with cold beer might be the first thing that comes to mind, the history of enjoying warmed brews stretches back centuries. Tonight, we're venturing beyond the icebox and exploring the comforting world of hot drinks, with a special focus on the surprising (and potentially delicious) realm of hot-poked beers.A Toasty Tradition: Hot Drinks Through the AgesFrom mulled wines enjoyed by medieval nobility to steaming cups of tea that fueled revolutions, hot beverages have long held cultural and practical significance. In colder climates, they provided warmth and comfort, while spices and herbs added flavor and potential health benefits. Even beer, that seemingly summery beverage, has a warm past. In fact, some historians believe that heated ales were the norm in ancient Europe, offering a safer alternative to potentially contaminated water.Mulled Magic: Crafting the Perfect Winter WarmerMulled wine, a timeless classic, remains a popular choice for chilly evenings. The process is simple: simmer wine with spices like cinnamon, cloves, and citrus, creating an aromatic and warming concoction. But did you know you can adapt this recipe for beer lovers? Experiment with different styles and spices to find your perfect match.Beyond the Bottle: Wine for the Beer-CuriousFor those open to exploring new territory, natural wines offer a fascinating journey. These unfiltered, unfined wines focus on minimal intervention, showcasing the unique characteristics of the grape and terroir. If you're a beer enthusiast looking to expand your palate, natural wines with their emphasis on freshness and complexity might surprise you.Poking Fun & Flavor: The Hot-Poked Beer CrazeNow, let's delve into the slightly unconventional world of hot-poked beers. This trend involves heating a mug of beer with a red-hot poker, supposedly caramelizing the sugars and creating a unique flavor profile. While opinions vary, there's no denying the intrigue and potential for experimentation. We'll compare and contrast the experience of a hot-poked beer versusThanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Beer festivals are a great way to try new beers, meet brewery representatives and travel to new places and they've come a long way from the days of drinking beers in parking lots. Many beer festivals nowadays are not just about the beer and have seminars, food, culture, music, art and more. In this episode, we talk to two beer festival planners, Day Bracey, who runs Barrel and Flow in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Laura Lodge, who ran Big Beers, Belgians and Barleywines in Breckenridge, Colorado. They talk about what goes into making a beer festival a success, some difficulties facing festival planning, and the future of beer festivals. Welcome to part two of Old Ales and Barleywines. In part one, we covered old ales, this week, we're exploring the American side of these styles. Barleywine used to be huge among craft beer nerds, it was the hot beer style and was often viewed as a thank you from breweries to their hardcore fans. Pat considers himself an adventurous guy. Drinking a bunch of old ale and barleywine when it's 100º is not his idea of adventurous though. Luckily the studio is cold, and the fan is on so he should be quite comfortable drinking all these heavy, high alcohol beers. Roger has been planning this episode for a very long time. He has verticals, he has barrel-aged variants. He even has a beer that he had to hunt down and bring into our Willowbrook location. The Brit loves a good Barleywine, and since 2017, we've held an annual get-together to taste and chat about this classic style. Over each year, Barleywines are collected from any brewery that has one, with no particular connection other than we try to focus on Illinois. Our the last celebration was held back in January 2020 at Riverlands Brewing, and little did we know then that it might be a while before we held the next one, or for that matter got together as a group to chat and sample. This year, The Brit had to come up with another approach so that social distancing protocols could be still observed. So instead of gathering together, Ken McMullen and The Brit headed out to 7 breweries and tasted one or two barleywines at each location. Luckily, as we recorded throughout March, restrictions were being lifted, people were getting vaxxed, and we were able to keep our mask wearing to a minimum. In Part 1 we head to Hopvine Brewing for our introduction, then to Werk Force and Oswego Brewing for 2 beers at each. It's a great start, and stay tuned for the next part! Cheers!
Anyone can put beer in a barrel, but brewing compelling (and award-winning) barrel-aged beers requires a more conscious approach to design, brewing, and fermentation. Verboten (https://verbotenbrewing.com)’s Josh Grenz knows a thing or two about the subject, having won bronze at both GABF and the World Beer Cup, as well as 2018 and 2020 golds at the Festival of Barrel-Aged Beers (FOBAB), for three separate barrel-aged beers. In this episode, Grenz talks through their process around brewing barrel-aged stouts and barleywines, from the earliest considerations of recipe design for complexity and interest to their intense hopping regimen that helps the aging process, and using flavorful malts like Special B to insure that aging and oxidation occur in pleasant ways that develop compelling flavors. He discusses successful high gravity fermentation (from yeast choice to mash strategies and enzyme assistance), adjusting base recipes for different finishing barrels, and designing adjunct strategies for subtlety. It took years for Grenz to attempt to brew barrel-aged beers, as the deep respect he had for the category intimidated him. But by carefully planning the approach through nuanced choices to ingredients and process, he’s found a winning strategy. *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): Nearly 2,000 breweries across the US, Canada & Mexico partner with G&D Chillers. Leaving a senior-level job (overseeing brewing operations for a 14,000 barrel per year brewery) to launch a small startup brewery with a tightly focused approach to brewing and an extremely limited sales model, is a big risk. But it’s one that Brad Clark has embraced. Private Press Brewing (http://www.privatepressbrewing.com) launches early summer and will release only barrel-aged stouts and barleywines, sold only through a membership program. It’s a focused approach to making tightly edited, bespoke beers for discerning customers, but it’s only possible thanks to the reputation he built making such beers for more than a decade at the Athens, Ohio stalwart (https://jackieos.com). In this episode, Clark discusses the challenge of moving from big to small, the gravity arms race in imperial-strength beers, choices for building body in big beers, designing component recipes for blending stock, how to use dark malts to guide oxidation in favorable directions, building a language to describe flavors and sensations while blending, defining the “pocket” for a blended beer, discovering emotion in exceptional barrels, being present and focused while tasting, and brewing and packaging lessons learned the hard way. “Happy accidents don’t happen anymore,” says Clark. “There’s intent, there’s vision, there’s palate, there’s this drive behind them. It’s not just an afterthought. It’s not a couple barrels in the corner. This is identity. Avoid happy accidents. Don’t even use that word. Think about what you’re doing and set it up for success.” This episode is brought to you by: G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): Nearly 2,000 breweries across the US, Canada & Mexico partner with G&D Chillers. Despite Mother Nature's best efforts, the 16th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting was a huge success It was an unusually warm day for the 16th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting and this brought with it some crazy weather. As attendees filled Bold Monk Brewing to sample the cask ales the rain started coming down strong and with about an hour left the hammer dropped. The parking lot flooded and the very well-covered patio was drenched, and finally, the power went out. Fortunately, we had completed our show taping but it did cause some chaos for the Bold Monk and cut a few festival-goers off from their cask ales a bit early. Even with the craziness, I think everyone had a great time. This is our 4th year partnering with Brewtopia Events for ACAT and we kept our tradition going by speaking with festival organizer Owen Ogletree about the event and the ever-changing world of cask ales. We also spoke to a few of the breweries currently under construction in Georgia that we hope to see debut in 2020. The team from Social Fox Brewing is ready to bring some brews to Norcross. A few of Georgia's Next Breweries Outrun Brewing | Founders Josh Miller and Ryan Silva (formerly of Decatur, GA's Three Taverns) join us to discuss the plans for their retro 80s-themed brewery coming to Stone Mountain. We did confirm there will be an Outrun arcade machine at the brewery. Sabbath Brewing | Founder Jeff Oparnica joins us to talk about his struggles fighting through zoning laws with the City of Atlanta, his plan to ferment 100% in oak vessels, and brewing raw ales. Social Fox Brewing & Storey Time Construction | We didn't have enough mics to get the whole team on with us but they all came out to support the cause. Mike Greene joined us to represent Team Social Fox to talk about their brewery coming to Norcross. Anthony Storey joins us from Storey Time Construction as well to discuss building out their brewery and some others that are in the works. (Storey Time is one of BGR's super awesome sponsors.) Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong BeerThese are a Strong Ale aged in either a wooden barrel or in contact with wood. Strong Ale - A catch-all style category for beers from 7 percent alcohol by volume and above. Some may even be as high as 20 percent ABV. As a result, color, aroma, and flavor characteristics will greatly vary; some have similarities to Barleywines and Old Ales. Wood and Barrel Aged Strong Beers are aged with the intention of developing unique attributes imparted by the wood and/or by liquids that had previously been stored in contact with the wood. Wood aging does not necessarily impart wood flavors, but does result in distinctive sensory outcomes. Used sherry, rum, whiskey, tequila, port, wine and other barrels are often used, imparting complexity and uniqueness to a beer. A balance of aroma, flavor and mouthfeel results from the marriage of new beer with attributes imparted by the wood or barrel. We age our Mighty Ale (Strong Ale 8%) in Jim Beam Barrels and add local NH Maple Syrup. I have been born anew and, in the process, anointed with vibrant, inspiring, previously unexperienced character, all while maintaining everything I am and have always been—bold, bullish, unadulterated, and yes, Arrogant. Are you Worthy of quaffing a beverage of this intensity, irreverence and quality craftsmanship? Not likely, but for those who “get it,” I know my time in this bourbon barrel has not been wasted. Cheers to you, enlightened imbiber. The general beer aging debate rages on, but barleywines have long been a staple for cellar keepers with the promise of better beer always further ahead. For this episode, we take on a murder of aged barleywines, chiefly American in style, often barrel-aged, and mostly just downright unpleasant. Perhaps we were influenced by our Bracket Fever, but this show brings a lot of lousy old hops and sickly sweet malts, one completely flat beer, and an overflowing Dumpy the Dump Bucket. We do sample some cheese pairings while also discussing Craig’s Shameful Bed Cheese Incident, faded cops, and what killed off the elders of craft beer. Science! In this episode of the Beer Here! podcast, your hosts discuss Barleywines and whether a commemorative tote bag justifies the cost of a beer festival. Will dives into history (of barleywines, not tote bags) before discussion turns to a recent lawsuit filed against Kona Brewing, Brew Dog's plans to build a beer resort, and this years Three Floyd's Dark Lord Day festival. Discussion includes an article on the 18 defining moments in craft beer history. Beers this episode are Sierra Nevada's Big Foot and Weyerbacher's Blithering Idiot. Music as always is 'Son of an American' by The So So Glos. Cheers!

It's a high ABV day, so stick around to find out what we TAP!
