What's up folks, today we have the pleasure of sitting down with Anthony Rotio, Chief Data Strategy Officer at GrowthLoop.(00:00) - Intro (01:10) - In this episode (04:05) - Journeying From Robotics to Modern Marketing Systems (11:05) - Most Marketing Systems Don't Learn Because They Lack Feedback Loops (16:10) - The Martech Engineering Talent Gap (19:51) - AI Will Amplify Whoever Has the Cleanest Causal Feedback Loop (29:17) - Agent Context Graphs for Drift Detection in Marketing Systems (31:51) - Humans Will Set Hypotheses, AI Will Accelerates Iteration (35:50) - The Evolution of Retail Media Networks (45:07) - How Commerce Networks Redefine Targeting With Governed Data (48:26) - How Agent to Agent Commerce Operates Inside Marketing Funnels (53:04) - Google Universal Commerce Protocol Explained (54:43) - Personal Happiness System (56:30) - Favorite Books Summary: Anthony traces a path from robotics and computer science to his current role where he approaches marketing as an engineering system. He explains how execution-first marketing stacks weaken feedback loops and fragment data, which slows learning and iteration. He introduces the agent context graph as a causality model that lets AI simulate and predict customer behavior with greater confidence. The conversation also covers retail media networks, first-party data monetization through governed access, and a shift toward zero-to-zero marketing driven by agent-to-agent transactions. He closes by stressing that strong data foundations determine who can compete as marketing becomes more automated and agent-driven.About AnthonyAnthony Rotio is the Chief Data Strategy Officer at GrowthLoop, where he leads partnerships and builds generative AI product features for marketers, including multi-agent systems, AI-driven audience building, and benchmarking and evaluation work. He previously served as GrowthLoop's Chief Customer Officer, where he built and led teams across data engineering, data science, and solutions architecture while supporting product development and strategic sales efforts. Before GrowthLoop, Anthony spent nearly six years at AB InBev, where he led a $100M owned retail business unit with full P&L responsibility and drove major growth through operational and digital transformation work. He also led U.S. marketing for Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Stella Artois, and other brands across music, food, and related consumer programs. He earned a B.A. in computer science from Harvard, played linebacker on the Harvard football team, founded the consumer product Pizza Shelf, and holds a Google Professional Cloud Architect certification.Journeying From Robotics to Modern Marketing SystemsAnthony's career started far away from marketing. He trained as a computer scientist and spent his early years working with robotics and reinforcement learning. His first exposure to a learning agent left a lasting impression because the system behaved less like traditional software and more like something adaptive. That experience shaped how he would later think about work, systems, and feedback. He learned early that progress comes from loops that learn, not static instructions. That mindset followed him into an unexpected chapter at AB InBev. Anthony entered a world defined by scale, brands, and operational complexity. He treated his technical background like a carpenter treats tools, useful only when applied to real problems. Running marketing across major beer brands taught him how value is created inside large organizations. It also exposed a recurring issue. Marketing teams had ambition and data, but execution moved slowly because ideas had to travel through layers of translation before anything reached customers. That friction became impossible to ignore. Audience definitions moved through tickets. Campaigns waited on queries. Data teams became bottlenecks through no fault of their own. Anthony felt the pull back toward technology, where systems could shorten the distance between intent and action. That pull led him to GrowthLoop, where he joined early and worked directly with customers. The appeal was immediate. The product connected straight to cloud data and removed several layers of mediation that marketing teams had accepted as normal. As language models improved, Anthony recognized a familiar pattern. Audience building behaved like a translation problem. Marketers described people and intent in natural language, while systems demanded structured logic. Early experiments showed that natural language models could close that gap. Anthony framed the idea clearly.“Audience building is a translation problem. You start with a business idea and you end with a query on top of data.”Momentum followed quickly. Customers like Indeed and Google responded because speed changed behavior. Teams experimented more often and refined audiences based on results instead of assumptions. Conversations with Sam Altman and collaboration with OpenAI reinforced that this capability belonged in the core workflow. Standing on stage at Google Cloud Next marked a clear moment of validation. That arc reshaped Anthony's role into Chief Data Strategy Officer. His work now focuses on building systems that learn over time. Faster audience creation leads to shorter feedback loops. Shorter loops improve decision quality. Better decisions compound. The throughline from robotics to marketing holds steady. Systems improve when learning sits at the center of execution.Key takeaway: Career leverage often comes from carrying one mental model across multiple domains. Anthony applied learning systems thinking from computer science to enterprise marketing, then rebuilt the tooling to match that mindset. You can do the same by identifying where translation slows your work, then designing interfaces that move intent directly into action. When feedback loops tighten, progress accelerates naturally. Most Marketing Systems Don't Learn Because They Lack Feedback LoopsMarketing organizations generate enormous amounts of activity, but learning often lags behind execution. Campaigns launch on schedule, dashboards fill with numbers, and post-campaign reviews happen right on time. The pattern repeats month after month with small adjustments and familiar explanations. Over time, teams become highly efficient at producing output while remaining surprisingly weak at retaining knowledge. The system rewards motion, visibility, and short-term lifts, which slowly conditions teams to forget what they learned last quarter.Anthony connects this behavior to structural pressure inside large organizations. Quarterly reporting cycles dominate priorities, and executive tenures continue to compress. Leaders feel urgency to show impact quickly and publicly. Compounding growth requires early patience and repeated reinforcement, which rarely aligns with board expectations or career incentives. Short time horizons shape long-term behavior, even when everyone agrees that learning should stack over time.“When you think about compound interest in finance, the early part looks almost linear. People want big bumps now, even if those bumps never build momentum.”Technology choices deepen the problem. Many companies invested heavily in customer data and built impressive data clouds that capture transactions, events, and engagement in detail. Activation remains slow because teams still rely on handoffs between marketing and data groups. A familiar sequence plays out:A marketer defines a campaign and requests an audience.A ticket moves to a data team for interpretation and SQL.The audience returns weeks later. The marketer realizes the audience lacks scale for ne...

He has spent more than two decades harnessing the power of business strategy, talented people, and disruptive technology. More recently, he has worked alongside AB InBev across markets and brands, with deep exposure to how loyalty, culture, and customer experience operate at global scale. The conversation reflects on how loyalty in the beer category extends beyond products or transactions. It is shaped by heritage, local pride, shared rituals, and everyday moments of connection. As global scale and complexity increase, we explore what it takes to protect these emotional loyalty drivers while evolving operating models and customer engagement behind the scenes. We also discuss how the beer category has changed over the past decade — from digital commerce and personalization to non-alcoholic innovation and more conscious consumption — and what these shifts mean for sustaining relevance and loyalty across generations and geographies. This episode offers a thoughtful perspective on how global brands can evolve without losing the cultural foundations that loyalty is built on.This episode is hosted by Nyeleti.Show Notes:1) DeWet Bisschoff2) Lekker Lees 3) The Beer Monopoly

Can Cizzle Brands Avoid History Repeating Itself? | Flow Beverage Acquisition

the Joshua Schall Audio Experience

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 30, 2025 15:07

Business history repeats itself…first as tragedy, second as farce. But for the sake of Cizzle Brands' future, let's hope lessons were learned the first time! While the company is managed as a single operating segment, Cizzle Brands started with a flagship brand CWENCH Hydration. Then, in January 2025…Cizzle Brands launched SPOKEN Nutrition, an NSF Certified for Sport line of athlete-grade sports nutrition products. Next, the company entered the functional foods segment this past September…launching a high-protein product called Sport Pasta under the HappiEats brand. And over the trailing twelve months, Cizzle Brands reported generating revenue of slightly above $10 million. And while most will likely recognize that Cizzle Brands is (at least currently) a much smaller active nutrition company compared to typical categorical competitors highlighted within my content pieces...purely judging the edutainment value of this business story based on the current level of Cizzle Brands revenue generation would undoubtedly show your ignorance surrounding last year's “reverse takeover transaction” examination. Though, beyond the seemingly intentional (yet) eerily similar growth strategies of BioSteel and CWENCH…it's a recent M&A transaction that really has me questioning if we're in some kind of business wash cycle right now! And that's because on Christmas Eve, Cizzle Brands announced that it had completed the acquisition of Flow Beverage for an aggregate purchase price of approximately $61 million. But while John Celenza isn't (technically) purchasing that same company (or even facility) twice, the M&A strategic rationale is quite similar. According to Cizzle Brands, the acquisition secures in-house manufacturing capacity for CWENCH, materially reducing cost of goods sold as volumes scale while improving production control and reliability. Additionally, it's said to strengthen the long-term operating platform…and create meaningful synergies that should materially accelerate its path to profitability. In just about 1.5 years' time, Cizzle Brands' products are available already in close to 6000 multichannel distribution points globally. Additionally, Cizzle Brands recently entered into a distribution agreement with a Canadian subsidiary of Keurig Dr Pepper. Though, for the foreseeable future, demand levels of CWENCH Hydration wouldn't even warrant turning on the lights daily at this approximately 150,000 square foot Tetra Pak manufacturing facility. So, Cizzle Brands NEEDS to ensure its laser focused on how it can better serve current contract manufacturing customers that includes BioSteel or Joyburst. And speaking of the largest co-packing customer of Flow Beverage (aka Cizzle Brands Manufacturing), you probably saw the news by now…but it just sold to Anheuser-Busch in a deal worth more than half a billion dollars! So, if Beatbox Beverages wasn't already large enough (and assumably smart enough) to possess levels of operational buffering…it certainly is now! Consequently, we don't know fully what that could mean for Cizzle Brands Manufacturing yet…but I'd assume M&A due diligence triggered conversations with Beatbox Beverages (and AB InBev) cementing confidence that previous manufacturing agreements would be honored into (I believe) the end of the decade.

Now, they sit on shelves getting dusty. Do we have too much good beer?We correct some bad intel we got recently. It seems that Anchor Brewing isn't leaving San Francisco and never intended to. American Craft Beer used AI to create their article and it got some info wrong. Never trust AI.We also heard of the horrible charges against the founder of Sycamore Brewing. Initial a single charge but more has been added. And it looks really, really bad.Note: Sycamore made the Top 3 in our Holiday Beer show. The show was recorded and scheduled for release prior to the news breaking.Irish Stouts seem to be having a moment. First Guinness said they're doing well and now Murphy's said things are going swimmingly. What happened that made these dry stouts have a moment?ABInBev is making some changes. They'll close some breweries and sell others. All about efficiency in a tightening sector. All that American alcohol that Canada decide not to sell? It's stuck in warehouse, taking up space, costing money. Although their reasoning may have made sense it was really more of a shooting yourself in the foot situation. Many provinces have state run liquor boards, so that alcohol was bought with taxpayer money. They should have bought it all up to get that money back in the system. Oh well.In other news... Trashed Panda is the hero we all needed, Kirin is developing beer with AI, and Gen Z is giving up on giving up. Expect straight talk on failed implementations, governance that actually clears roadblocks, and translating values into daily decisions on the floor. What you'll hearWhy culture is a set of guiding principles you can act on, lessons from the AB InBev acquisition years and getting comfortable with constant change, a candid failure story and what clunky multi-consultant programs miss, systems thinking across tech and manufacturing, agile mindsets meeting lean and PDCA, practical AI use cases for quoting, planning, and buy decisions, the shift from analyst work to relationship work, and how to build multi-level client alignment that survives real life.Topics coveredBehavior-driven culture and purpose, change management beyond slide decks, ERP friction and inventory truth, cross-functional governance, agile plus lean in the same room, AI agents for sourcing and planning, leadership communication and trust-but-verify, turning workshops into action logs people actually own.Key quotes“Culture is a set of guiding principles and behaviors that help me make the right decisions day to day.”“Most transformations fail where the behavior stops. In 2015, the most lucrative beverage industry deal ended up happening between Monster Beverage and The Coca-Cola Company. But what doesn't get talked about enough is how that long-term strategic partnership caused another beverage giant to experience the categorical version of the movie “50 First Dates.” And that's because before Coca-Cola became the exclusive global distribution partner of Monster Energy, Anheuser-Busch was the preferred domestic distributor…in the early phase of its “beyond beer” strategic transformation. But while AB InBev could've then aggressively pursued the acquisition of Bang Energy or more recently CELSIUS, GHOST, or Alani Nu…which had all been essentially built off the back of the beer giant's distributor network, it made the head scratching decision to buy HiBall Energy in 2017. And while AB InBev discontinued the all-natural energy drinks in 2023…it sold the defunct brand IP to Tilray a handful of months later. But now with more focus being placed on HiBall, the business is growing substantially on Amazon and returning to Whole Foods Market…a retailer where brand loyalty was strong. So, it begs the question…is there some kind of categorical curse on AB InBev that I haven't heard of yet?

In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I speak with Jane Ostler from Kantar, the world's leading marketing data and analytics company, whose clients include Google, Diageo, AB InBev, Unilever, and Kraft Heinz. Jane brings clarity to a debate often clouded by headlines, explaining why AI should be seen as a creative sparring partner, not a rival. She outlines how Kantar is helping brands balance efficiency with inspiration, and why the best marketing in the years ahead will come from humans and machines working together. We explore Kantar's research into how marketers really feel about AI adoption, uncovering why so many projects stall in pilot phase, and what steps can help teams move from experimentation to execution. Jane also discusses the importance of data quality as the foundation of effective AI, drawing comparisons to the early days of GDPR when oversight and governance first became front of mind. From Coca-Cola's AI-assisted Christmas ads to predictive analytics that help brands allocate budgets with greater confidence, Jane shares examples of where AI is already shaping marketing in ways that might surprise you. She also highlights the importance of cultural nuance in AI-driven campaigns across 90-plus markets, and why transparency, explainability, and human oversight are vital for earning consumer trust. Whether you're a CMO weighing AI strategy, a brand manager experimenting with new tools, or someone curious about how the biggest advertisers are reshaping their playbooks, this conversation with Jane Ostler offers both inspiration and practical guidance. It's about rethinking AI not as the end of creativity, but as the beginning of a new partnership between data, machines, and human imagination.

In 10 quick but memorable minutes I'm sharing my observations and experiences with marketing strategies I had close encounters with over the recent Memorial Day weekend. From an innovative Fresh Direct pop-up, to a Rosé Soirée in the Hamptons with missed promotional opportunities, these are my thoughts on some effective ...and ineffective ... marketing tactics. And I borrow from one of the 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing, by brilliant marketing strategist, Jack Trout. First, learn how my friend Joanne (who happens to be Jack Trout's daughter) and I popped into a pop-up for Fresh Direct. We were in pursuit of coffee but got a surprise stimulating conversation with the interim CMO, instead: Jackson Jeyanayagam. He explained their strategy was to build awareness for their new delivery service and display the quality of their products "IRL."  Fresh Direct PopUp store Learn which of the 22 immutable laws Jackson was aiming to apply; and the overlap with he, that law and AB InBev! Then, we had a blast sampling 20 kinds of rose', but can we remember which one we preferred -- to buy again? Blame the drinking, sure, but I think it was more the missed marketing opportunities at the Soiree.  (TWO really stood out, though, which you can read about in my new Substack Newsletter, "Moss Hysteria"!)  Then, I popped over the next day -- back in NYC -- to check out Cognitiv AI's pop-up at Grand Central, promoting mental health and positive news. It was a blooming success. Learn why.  Overall, great experiences that showed how valuable experiential marketing can be!
