Once again we deep dive into Martin's cellar and find out if he's kept gold or held on for too long. Brekeriet released King's Goblet back in 2020. It's a strong ale aged in Rioja wine barrels for 9 months. It was never a huge hit. It averages a 3.53 overall rating on Untappd. Hopefully it hasn't fallen off. Mikkeller Brewing San Diego closed in 2022. Valknut also came out in 2020. This imperial stout originally had coffee, vanilla, pecans and was aged in maple barrels. No walnuts were used in the making of this beer. We had it back in 2020 and gave it a 4.5 rating. How does it hold up 6 years later? #beer #craftbeer #drinks #goldenale #barrelaged #imperialstout
Send us Fan MailWe put the Old Fashioned to the test by tasting bottled RTDs, pre-batched bar styles, and homemade builds to see where convenience truly holds up. We dig into history, ingredients, proof, and technique, then land on what we'd actually buy again and what we'd rather fix with our own bitters and syrup. • why the Old Fashioned stays the gold standard cocktail • whether higher proof RTDs taste closer to a true Old Fashioned • bitters that change everything, especially black walnut bitters • sweeteners that work best, from agave to barrel-aged maple syrup • the Yellowstone ready-to-serve pour and how citrus zest shifts balance • Penelope bottled Old Fashioneds and why the black walnut stands out • Prohibition's influence on muddled fruit and soda habits • the Wisconsin Old Fashioned style and the brandy versus bourbon debate • why barrel-aged Old Fashioneds feel more integrated and smooth • glassware and ice choices that improve texture and dilution • how sugar makes Old Fashioneds hit harder than neat whiskey • the bacon fat washed Old Fashioned build and why it works • our final ranking, including why Handy and Schiller holds up best www.scotchybourbonboys.com for all things scotchy bourbon boys. The Old Fashioned looks simple until you start comparing what's in the glass. We line up homemade builds, bottled ready-to-drink Old Fashioneds, and bar-style barrel-aged batches to answer a real question for bourbon fans: is the classic Old Fashioned still king, or have RTD cocktails finally gotten good enough to keep stocked year-round? CT joins us as our resident mixologist and we get hands-on with what actually changes the drink: proof, dilution, bitters, sweeteners, citrus, cherries, ice, and even the weight of the rocks glass. We taste through popular options and talk straight about what works and what tastes like “every bad bar Old Fashioned,” including how to rescue an orange-heavy pour with lemon zest, or rebalance sweetness by cutting syrup and leaning into rye whiskey or higher proof bourbon. We also dig into Old Fashioned history, from the 1806 cocktail definition to Prohibition-era muddled fruit, plus the Wisconsin Old Fashioned tradition with soda. Then we go full experiment mode with barrel-aged flavor, smoking tools, and a showstopper: a bacon fat washed Old Fashioned built with black walnut bitters, a touch of chocolate bitters, and barrel-aged maple syrup. If you love bourbon cocktails, bitters, and practical home bartending tips, you'll want this one. What happens in the Power Rankings when a 6% Barrel-Aged Ale from Keeping Together in collaboration with Hill Farmstead takes on the ABV heavy Barrel-Aged beers from The Veil and Hair of the Dog, Revolution Brewing, and Wax Wings Brewing Co.? Oh, Keeping Together, they don't believe us. But you won't let those Barrel-Aged robots defeat us. We get a little rowdy this episode with some crazy big stouts. With all the craziness happening in the US these days, we thought it would be fun to remind everyone that beer doesn't care about politics. First up is Ranger Creek Brewing's Texas Bourbon Barrel Series Imperial Coffee Ale. This imperial brown ale clocks in at 11.6% ABV and gives you a warm bourbon, coffee kiss of happiness. We love Evil Twin Brewing NYC. They have been killing the beer game for years. The Great Northern Barrel Aged Series 29 is a 15% ABV imperial stout. Barrel-aged for 36 months in Sine Qua Non red wine barrels then in Henry McKenna 11yr old bourbon barrels before it's conditioned on bourbon soaked coffee and vanilla. That's a lot of work and the results really show the effort. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #imperialstout #imperialbrownale
Ryan Allen of Soul & Spirits in Memphis loves brewing traditional lager—but when it comes to turning heads at big events like the Great American Beer Festival, he's not afraid of putting that methodical approach to work on projects that other brewers might view as crazy. Barbecue sauce–flavored beer? Yes. Beer with the taste and consistency of Southern gravy? Check. Barrel-aged stout that tastes like cola (with a spike of something harder)? Of course. In this episode, Allen discusses these outliers in the beer-flavor pantheon—but also shares his approach to brewing with locally grown rice, which he cereal-mashes for everything from IPA to “Southern pilsner.” He also discusses: their Sauce line of barbecue sauce–flavored gluten-free ales using astringent and tannic spices in beer preventing oat milk from curdling in an acidic beer environment building cola flavor through a variety of ingredients malt blends in stout for depth and flavor brewing with locally grown rice making “Southern pilsner” with New Zealand–grown Riwaka hops And more. It's cold, dark days in Sweden so we need dark beers to keep us warm. Alesong has released a special edition of Rhino Suit. Rhino Suit - Swedish Edition is an 11% ABV double milk imperial stout. Made special for Sweden, this milk stout is a Heaven Hill bourbon-barrel-aged beer. It makes us feel special. It's not often we get double milk stouts at Systembolaget. When we saw Surly 13, a 12.5% ABV maple barrel-aged double milk imperial stout, we knew we had a great combo. Sadly, it wasn't specially brewed for Sweden. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #barrel-aged #imperialstout #milkstout
Compared to the pace at which Hop Butcher releases IPAs, their barrel-aged offerings might as well be Halley's Comet. But when they do release a big beer aged in barrels, it's absolutely worth tracking down, just like the four beers on this episode. We continue our Barrel-Aged Winter with these Hop Butcher for the World beers that saw limited release from their taproom over the last year or so and try not to get yelled at by bourbon Facebook groups in the process. Also, we consider walking a mile in condiment shoes; Craig somehow still has faith in ice cream beers; and Ryan's on the lookout for a Beefy Boy. Our guest is Hideatsu Shibanuma who is the 18th-generation president of Shibanuma Soy Sauce, which was founded in 1688. Shibanuma Soy Sauce has specialized in producing barrel-aged soy sauce in Ibaraki Prefecture for about 370 years. Its products were so superior that they were served to Shoguns during the Edo period. Like many other craftsmen-based traditional businesses in Japan, soy sauce manufacturers have faced challenges due to reasons like a declining population and changes in people's diet. But Shibanuma Soy Sauce is doing well, thanks to its success in the export markets, with over 60 destinations worldwide. But it did not happen overnight. It is the result of Hideatsu's hard work. In this episode, we will discuss the key to successfully running the 377-year old soy sauce company, the unique taste of Hideatsu's barrel-aged soy sauce, why his products have been attracting the attention of top chefs all over the world and much, much more!!!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's the last episode of the year. 2025 was a great year for trying beers. We hope you enjoyed the year as much as we did. We cap off the year with two really fun beers. 3 Fonteinen Oude Gueuze Season 17/18 Blend no 61 isn't just any old 3F Oude Gueuze. It's a special release that was basically only released in Sweden. There is a great story behind. The Bruery Barrel-Aged Three's Cocompany is a bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout with coconut, vanilla beans, milk sugar and oat milk. It's definetly a dessert in a glass. Have a Happy New Year! See you in 2026. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #gueuze #imperialstout

We finally did it, we cracked open a bottle of barrel-aged Malört, which might be the most cursed idea in drinking history. Matt, Jason, and Drew put their taste buds (and mental health) on the line to see whether aging Malört in oak barrels improves it… or just gives it more time to absorb evil.We break down the nose, the palate, the trauma, the Chicago lore, and whether Malört actually changes once it spends time in wood. Spoiler: it's still Malört. Very much Malört. Aggressively Malört.Laugh with us. Cry with us. Join us on our latest episode where we talk all things Bourbon County. Not about the actual county in Kentucky, but about the glorious liquid produced once a year from Goose Island Brewery in the form of their Bourbon County Brand Stout. In this episode we talk about the upcoming releases from the Bourbon County Brand portfolio and we also revisit a past botte, 2015 Rare. From the Bourbon County website, Back in 1979 the folks at Heaven Hill Distilleries filled a handful of new freshly charred American white oak barrels with some of their finest whiskey. It is rare for Bourbon to age in barrels for more than twenty-three years. But these barrels patiently sat for over thirty years. The extra years developed a distinct and complex character that makes them truly one-of-a kind. We filled those barrels with Bourbon County Brand Stout, and then stored them away in our Chicago Barrel House to age for two more years. With these rare barrels from our friends at Heaven Hill we believe this is one of the finest beers we have ever produced. This is Goose Island Rare Bourbon County Brand Stout for 2015Is 2015 Rare still holding up? it worth it? What are our thoughts on the newest releases coming Black Friday? As a trained food scientist with 20 years of experience in the field, Eric Tennant entered the brewing world with a bit more background than most. And that background has served him well, as he considers both ingredients and processes required to achieve the beer flavors he envisions. Over the past few years, he's focused Benchtop (https://benchtopbrewing.com) around foeder-aged lagers, but the constraints of the small brewery have led to a number of innovative process solutions. The techniques that he applies are making award-winning beer, too—Benchtop just recently took home a silver medal in Zwickelbier or Kellerbier at GABF, and their barrel-aged barleywine, Old Wooden Ship, was one of Craft Beer & Brewing's 20 best beers of 2023. In this episode, Tennant discusses: crafting a hybrid approach to lager that's part Czech, and part German decocting in a brewhouse not designed for it polishing beer through lagering without head pressure in oak foeders increasing IBUs in lager recipes to offset the mellowing effect of foeder aging double batching with different recipes optimized for two different mash processes checking COAs and manipulating mashes to fit the malt protecting foam potential when wood aging brewing barrel-aged English barleywine And more. Learn how Revolution Brewing grew from a small brewery to Illinois' largest independently-owned brewery — and what makes their beer so special. 03:51 Beer Myth: Do all yeasts ferment the same way? Katherine challenges the idea that top fermenting and bottom fermenting yeasts function in the same way. Learn what yeasts actually do and the role they play in the fermentation process. 09:03 Revolution Brewing Interview: David Blackford, Lead Brewer at Revolution Brewing, explains the difference between a head brewer and a lead brewer, reminisces about his first impressions of Revolution Brewing and the first beer he ever got to work on, and discusses the development of signature beers like Eugene Porter and Anti-Hero, his journey from a packaging specialist to lead brewer, and what it was like for the brewery to transition from a small brewery to a large-scale operation, including the use of new technology like centrifuges to increase production capacity. Then, David talks about Revolution's latest favorite, the Cold Time Lager, and explores the growing trend of lighter, less complicated beers making a comeback, emphasizing the appreciation for quality brewing with fewer ingredients. David and Katherine discuss the difficulty (and fun!) of naming beers before Cody jumps in with questions about Revolution's Deep Wood Series of barrel-aged beers, including what inspired Revolution to release such high ABV beers year-round. The discussion also touches on memorable yet discontinued brews, such as the Bottom Up Wit, discussing its unique qualities and why it's no longer a staple despite its popularity. David also clarifies the differences between Wit wheat beers and Hefeweizens, focusing on yeast's role in defining their distinct flavors. 53:56 Beer Behavior: What's up with hop waters? David discusses the intricacies and challenges of making hop water, a non-alcoholic beverage gaining popularity among beer enthusiasts, including insights into their process for creating Super Zero. He discusses the benefits of hop water as a non-alcoholic alternative that allows breweries to showcase their craftsmanship, its role as an excellent palate cleanser at beer festivals like FOBAB, and its versatile suitability for various settings, from work lunches to outdoor activities. 1:00:12 Today's Featured Merchandise: “Drink a Stout” tee (if you can drink coffee, then you can drink a stout!), available in multiple colors!
