This episode expands on the Skotia Chapter in Entering Hekate's Cave by Cyndi Brannen. From Entering Hekate's Cave: The Journey Through Darkness To Wholeness The Cailleach[i]is an expression of The Crone, a healing spirit that offers respite along the journey through the cave. There are stories regaling The Cailleach as the eternal wise woman healer. Sometimes denigrated as a mean-spirited hag, The Cailleach of various locations, such as the Cailleach Béara (Cally Berra)[ii], were Goddesses of Winter to ancient Celts. The importance of place is central to the tales of The Cailleach, where she typically be based in a specific location, such as Béara. Being linked to places signifies how deeply she is connected to the land and its people. She is of the earth itself. This connection of place also speaks to her message of reconnecting to the land, of treating the earth well so that we can be nourished. [i] Sorita d'Este and David Rankine. Today Mary is talking to Eoghan Daltun. Eoghan is a sculpture conservator, a High Nature Value farmer and, above all, a rewilder. Originally from Dublin, since 2009 he has lived with his two sons, Liam and Seánie, on their 73-acre farm near Eyeries on the Beara Peninsula, West Cork.He released his hugely successful and award winning book late last year.An Irish Atlantic Rainforest winner of the An Post Irish Book Award winner, 2022'The stories are absorbing, the writing charismatic and the ideas thought-provoking' Irish Independent'Fascinating ... a manifesto for saving our own corner of the planet through letting things be' Irish Times, The Gloss'Daltun writes with passion and purpose of the way we should live now' RTÉ GuideOn the Beara peninsula in West Cork, a temperate rainforest flourishes. It is the life work of Eoghan Daltun, who had a vision to rewild a 73-acre farm he bought, moving there from Dublin with his family in 2009. An Irish Atlantic Rainforest charts that remarkable journey. Part memoir, part environmental treatise, as a wild forest bursts into life before our eyes, we're invited to consider the burning issues of our time: climate breakdown, ecological collapse, and why our very survival as a species requires that we urgently and radically transform our relationship with nature. This is a story as much about doing nothing as taking action - allowing natural ecosystems to return and thrive without interference, and in doing so heal an ailing planet. Powerfully descriptive, lovingly told, An Irish Atlantic Rainforest presents an enduring picture of the regenerative force of nature, and how one Irishman let it happen.Contact Eoghan Daltun at www.beararainforest.comBuy the book online at www.gutterbookshop.comwww.booksupstarirs.iewww.kennys.iewww.easons.ieContact Mary Bermingham atmary@burrennaturesanctuary.ie Check out Burren Nature Sanctuary at www.burrennaturesanctuary.ie

Cailleach's Cave Winter Solstice Meditation

Join me on this meditative journey to the heart of Hekate's Cave where we meet The Cailleach for unburdening our "stones," on the Winter Solstice (or anytime we need to let go our heaviness). I adore The Cailleach. She connects me to my Celtic roots, and always welcomes the weary traveler, offering shelter from the winter's storms.

I Will Read To You

Pastoralby Djuna Barnes (1892-1982)A frog leaps out across the lawn,And crouches there—all heavy and alone,And like a blossom, pale and over-blown,Once more the moon turns dim against the dawn.Crawling across the straggling panoplyOf little roses, only half in bloom,It strides within that beamed and lofty roomWhere an ebon stallion looms upon the hay.The stillness moves, and seems to grow immense,A shuddering dog starts, dragging at its chain,Thin, dusty rats slink down within the grain,And in the vale the first far bells commence. Here in the dawn, with mournful doomèd eyesA cow uprises, moving out to bearA soft-lipped calf with swarthy birth-swirled hair,And wide wet mouth, and droll uncertainties. The grey fowls fight for places in the sun,The mushrooms flare, and pass like painted fans:All the world is patient in its plans—The seasons move forever, one on one.Small birds lie sprawling vaguely in the heat,And wanly pluck at shadows on their breasts,And where the heavy grape-vine leans and rests,White butterflies lift up their furry feet. The wheat grows querulous with unseen cats;A fox strides out in anger through the corn,Bidding each acre wake and rise to mournBeneath its sharps and through its throaty flats. And so it is, and will be year on year,Time in and out of date, and still on timeA billion grapes plunge bleeding into wineAnd bursting, fall like music on the ear.The snail that marks the girth of night with slime,The lonely adder hissing in the fern,The lizard with its ochre eyes aburn—Each is before, and each behind its time.
