Jennifer Rock and Michael Voss are corporate communications experts, turned business humor writers, who spent two decades careening through corporate America and barely lived to write about it. Having worked with some of Minnesota’s largest and most dynamic companies, including Best Buy and Cargill, Jennifer and Michael’s 40+ years of corporate work experiences inspired and helped shaped many of the story lines and characters found in their books. Their latest book Operation Clusterpuck was released in November 2018, published by Wise Ink Publishing. Genres: Business / Fiction / HumorOperation Clusterpuck tells the funny, cynical but heartfelt story of Business Solutions, Inc. (BSI) — a U.S. corporation whose leaders have set in motion a series of disastrous projects that threaten to take the company down. BSI’s ragtag communications team once again gets pressed into action, juggling around-the-clock workloads, battling ruthless execs, and struggling to find meaning in their lives outside of work. “We wanted to tell the story of those unsung corporate heroes — the ones who are barely keeping their heads above water, but still do the right thing for their work ‘family,’ even when it’s not easy,” says coauthor Jennifer Rock. “Readers often tell us they recognize themselves and their co-workers in our novels,” adds coauthor Michael Voss. “We’re thrilled to reflect their work lives and experiences. Even if our stories might feel like a fun-house mirror.”https://rockandvossbooks.com

E25 Coming from last week’s episode talking talking some strengths coming from an interview with a corporate leader in a large company we wanted to take this week to talk the cons of corporate and how you can make it work for you if it’s what YOU want. This week we got to hang out with Jennifer Rock and Michael Voss who worked the corporate life for 25 years and left to start their jobs to start a communications consulting company for themselves. Their journey started when they had some trying times at their company and started writing their first book together B.S.Incorporated and later wrote the sequel Operation Clusterpuck which are both business fictional novels based off of real life situations behind closed boardroom doors and private jets. We talk ways to work against complacency at work, communication in your job or at your business with others, changes in technology creating changes in public communication, and pros and cons of having your own business or working for a large or small business.   In This Episode What really happens in the corporate world Difference between older and newer mentality of career priorities Communication Technological changes in our communication style in and our of business Fictional business novel? Did you know those existed? Rad! Differences between working small and large business or your own business. Don’t let a company make choices for you, choose your path Don’t let life happen to you If you like working at a corporate desk job, great keep doing that! Don’t sleepwalk You have to be ready to go Would changing in your current job make you happy? You still need to ‘work’ even when you have your dream job What is your funyun threshold? How do you measure success? Self awareness Authenticity There’s no replacement for face to face   Quotes   Every position he’s ever had in his career has just happened to him, he’s never been looking for them. - Jennifer Rock   “No company says ‘Here’s exactly the work/life balance that you deserve and I’m going to give you” Because if you ask a company to choose for you the company’s going to choose itself because thats what they are designed to do. You need to take control of your life and decide what works for you. - Jennifer Rock   If you decide you want to work 90 hours a week for a 45 billion dollar company, thats awesome! - Jennifer Rock   I understand the person that all of the sudden blows up and does exactly what they wanted to do and the person that worked something they hate for 90 years and looks back with regret, Life is fast paced and I understand how these things happen on both sides. - Host Dave Swillum   You have to be ready to go, I would never encourage someone to jump prematurely. Jennifer and Michael are corporate communication experts and have just released Operation Clusterpuck. A thrilling read that will have you feeling like somebody is watching through your webcam. Jennifer Rock and Michael Voss spent two decades careening through corporate America and barely lived to write about it. As company journalists, speechwriters, and C-suite advisors, they stockpiled insider stories and cautionary tales, which they turned into two novels: B.S., Incorporated and Operation Clusterpuck. Both live near Minneapolis where they own a communications agency, speaking to groups of all sizes, and share their perspectives in publications like the Washington Post. Jennifer Rock and Michael Voss were corporate communications directors at Best Buy for many years.  One day they bowed out of a ‘soul-crushing’ meeting and stole away for a drink.  From that moment on, a new partnership formed.  They began to plan their first novel and 5 years later, they started their own communications firm.  They have since written two humorous novels showcasing parodies of corporate life, “B.S. Inc.” and “Operation Clusterpuck”. In this episode we discuss: How they are grateful for the years they worked together at Best Buy and how they discovered the need for something different in their professional lives. Jennifer’s story about going through a divorce while she was also making a significant career transition and what worked for her through the process. Michael’s story about being married with two children and how his decision to leave the corporate world was embraced and supported by his family. How they have written two humorous novels showcasing parodies of corporate life, called “B.S. Incorporated” and “Operation Clusterpuck.” How Michael and Jennifer talked about the planning steps and the thought process they engaged in to take the risk to leave steady employment. Michael Voss and Jennifer Rock write books about the corporate workplace. Not management books, but a darkly funny and all too recognisable novel about universal truths, from the agonies of working under a bad boss to the joy of finding free food in the break room. Their latest, 'Operation Clusterpuck', is newly available. We read it and wanted to hear more, in this podcast episode. So... did this stuff really happen to them? And why did they exchange their corporate jobs for making an impact by writing books, and co-founding their own communications agency? They get personal about their own stories, and inspiring about their views on transparent and honest internal communications. Today on the show I do my first interview with two guests. We all talk about writing and their incredibly entertaining books about life in the corporate world. They took the experience and funny stories they had collected in their years of working with many different corporations and put them together in two great books, with more to come hopefully.  If you have ever worked in an office you need to read these books and listen to this episode.  Operation Clusterpuck tells the funny, cynical but heartfelt story of Business Solutions, Inc. (BSI) — a U.S. corporation whose leaders have set in motion a series of disastrous projects that threaten to take the company down.
