From January 2015: Atheist John Loftus has challenged Christians with the 'Outsider Test of Faith'. He believes that if Christians examined their own faith with the same level of scepticism they do other faiths, they would reject it. Christian guest David Marshall is the author of 'How Jesus Passes the Outsider Test'. A resident of China, he debates Loftus, examining why, among other factors, the global success of Christianity means that it passes the Test. • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate
Another classic show from the archives. Randal Rauser is a Christian, John Loftus is a former-Christian-now-atheist. They co-authored the book “God Or Godless? debating 20 controversial questions.” They joined me for two discussions. In his “Outsider Test for Faith” Loftus claimed that Christians would abandon their faith if they critiqued it in the way they do other religions. But Rauser argued that Loftus needed to put his own atheistic worldview through the test. They also debated whether stories of miracles can count as evidence of the supernatural. This is a look at the first part at the five parts of The Christian Delusion edited by John Loftus (2010). This examines his Outsider Test for Faith (OTF), which he claims makes all religious faiths fall short of probability. (The following parts will include the veracity of the Bible, the goodness of God, the resurrection, and Christianity as a social good.) Recorded: 5 May 2018 Published: 5 May 2018 Released: 15 May 2018 Watch video of talk here: https://youtu.be/LqMxXkb333c In this talk I speak with Viquesi about his belief in Christianity. He says that he believes in Christianity because it helps him out in his daily life. I then use the Outsider Test for Faith, and the conversation got into the relative nature of truth. Viquesi says that truth is what we make it, at least when it comes to religion. I wished I would have got into how interested he is personally in knowing that what he believes is true. If, hypothetically, he were wrong, would he want to know? Or I could have used the analogy he introduced about believing that your shoes will keep you safe, or your raincoat will keep you dry. If someone believed their raincoat would keep them dry, but then went outside in the rain and noticed that their clothes were getting drenched, should they alter their belief accordingly? If he found out he was wrong, would he change his belief? Let me know what you think. As always, your feedback is welcome. He did, however, still believe in a God with 100 percent confidence, largely because of prayer. I was tempted to tell Jamil that he was a walking Outsider Test for Faith (read the book by John W. Loftus), but that may have just confused things, and wasn't really helpful to the conversation at the time. After approximately 11 minutes of friendly talk with an sincere focus on the efficacy of prayer, Jamil decided that 60 percent would be a more honest position for his confidence in his God belief. Music provided by Chet Hovatter. Mistakes: It was nearly 100F at the time and I was eager to take a break, but I regret not giving Jamil a few more seconds of reflection at the end of the talk after he lowered his confidence to the 60% mark. I should have also offered him a word of encouragement for being so honest and at the very least asked if he wanted to keep talking. My objective is to teach others how to conduct similar conversations with believers—regardless of the religion they subscribe to—based on techniques from Dr. Peter Boghossian's book, “A Manual for Creating Atheists”. I also want to encourage others to build off of these techniques and conduct similar conversations with believers in their own, unique style. John W. Loftus is a former Church of Christ minister. Today, he's an atheist, author and activist. He joins Seth Andrews to talk about his journey.Video of this interview: https://youtu.be/C794qlswPzI
John Loftus was an evangelical minister. He has several degrees in Christian apologetics. He pastored churches and taught at Christian colleges. Then he left it all. He has written a dozen books with titles such as Why I Became an Atheist: A Former Preacher Rejects Christianity and The Outsider Test for Faith: How to Know Which Religion Is True. His latest book is How to Defend the Christian Faith: Advice from An Atheist. He cuts through the mischaracterizations, special pleading and outright lies of Christian apologists. He blogs at Debunking Christianity.
John W. Loftus should be a Christian. He attended and graduated from Great Lakes Christian College, Lincoln Christian University, and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School where he learned under apologist William Lane Craig. But he’s spent the last several years debunking the faith. His books include Why I Rejected Christianity, Why I Became an Atheist, and The Outsider Test for Faith. His latest book is strangely called How to Defend the Christian Faith. I spoke with John about the worst argument Christian apologists use, how learning the Bible caused him to leave the faith, and whether rejecting Christianity is the same thing as becoming an atheist.

With so many religions in the world, how can you tell which one is correct? John W. Loftus tackles this question in his new book, The Outsider Test for Faith: How to Know Which Religion Is True (Prometheus Books, 2013). In order to take on this perplexing question, John Loftus argues for a simple test called the Outsider Test for Faith, where believers – even if hypothetically – try to consider what their faith looks like to someone from the outside. There may be similar strands running through many religions, but there are also irreconcilable differences. It is easy for a Christian to explain why they do not believe in Vishnu, for example, and Loftus utilizes this approach to try to get believers to analyze their own faith as easily as they do others’. Loftus also deals with the Religious Dependency Thesis, which points out that what religion one holds is usually the result of where and to whom you were born. By applying the skepticism that many already have toward most gods, Loftus hopes that the OTF will aid those to let go of one more. Loftus’ blog can be found at here. How can one accept the Bible at face value but reject the Quran's teachings? How can one accept Christian miracles as evidence but reject Hindu miracles? John Loftus, author of the Christian Delusion and God or Godless, joins us on the show to discuss the Outsider Test For Faith, which challenges believers to thoughtfully consider why they reject the claims of other religions and then apply the same critical standards to their own beliefs. Also on the show, its the Gospel of Superman! Why has Hollywood decided to promote the latest superhero film specifically to evangelical churches? And for God Thinks Like You, can just thinking about Superman turn you into a hero? All that plus a polytheism that is , quite frankly, a little twisted.
While on tour promoting his new book "The Magic of Reality" Richard Dawkins found himself banned from a book signing at a Detroit area country club after the owner learned that Dawkins was an atheist. Dawkins called the last-minute cancelation of the event an act of "sheer bigotry" but some insist that a privately owned business has the right to refuse service to atheists. Jennifer Beahan, the assistant director for the Center For Inquiry Michigan, joins us on the show to explain how the law does not allow discrimination against the non-religious and why CFIMI will be filing a lawsuit against the club. Meanwhile the American Cancer Society has also banned the atheist charity Foundation Beyond Belief from joining their "Relay for Life" even though the foundation was planning to raise over half a million dollars for the event. Also on this episode: Richard Dawkins explains why he will not debate apologist William Lane Craig; The connection between intuitive thinking styles and religious belief is explored on this weeks "God Thinks Like You" segment and we examine the "Outsider Test for Faith" proposed by John Loftus in The Christian Delusion.
