Summer cometh: the grills get scraped clean, the buns are split, and hungry Americans get set to boil or broil their wursts, wieners, and sausages. In the summer of 2021, Jamie Loftus drove from coast to coast, tasting the vast array of hot dogs that America has to offer, consuming as many as four a day—and in one notable (or regrettable) instance, five. Chicago-style and the Coney Island special; drive-through and deli; chili and chile: Loftus devoured them all. Her ensuing book, Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot Dogs, brings the glory and the gory. It may be the first to detail not only the different genders of pickle jars one can buy at a gas station, but also the horrific treatment of animals and workers at slaughterhouses, conditions that got distinctly worse during the pandemic. Loftus—stand-up comedian, TV writer, and creator of such illustrious one-season podcasts as “My Year in Mensa” and “Ghost Church”—joins us to talk about the wild world of that iconic American food. This episode originally aired in 2023.Go beyond the episode:Jamie Loftus's Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot DogsProPublica's exposé of the meatpacking industry during Covid revealed awful conditions, and government collusionDelight your senses with PBS's classic A Hot Dog ProgramA few of the varieties mentioned in this episode:The Texas Tavern (not in Texas)Hungarian hot dogs … in ToledoThe baloney-wrapped hot dogs at Attman'sWhat'll ya have at the Varsity?Ben's Chili Bowl, where half-smokes and chili dogs reignThe Sonoran hot dogBut Loftus's top five are:Rutt's Hut in Clifton, New JerseyHot Dog Ruiz Los Chipilones in Tucson, ArizonaKing Jong Grillin in Portland, OregonThe hot dog carts across the street from the Crypto.com Arena, or near Union Station in Los Angeles, CaliforniaTexas Tavern in Roanoke, VirginiaTune in every other week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. In this episode, Megan and Frank investigate the Mandela Effect. Why do so many people "remember" Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s, or the Fruit of the Loom logo as containing a cornucopia, or the existence of a movie starring Sinbad as a genie? What explains these collective mis-rememberings: parallel dimensions, a government cover-up, a glitch in the matrix? Or should we just conclude that human memory is inherently unreliable? How do false memories arise, and how can we distinguish the real from the imagined? Despite our cultural obsession with preserving every memory, could there be some value in forgetting the past? In this week's episode, Matt Walker explores memory's astonishing malleability, challenging the belief that recollections are fixed. He highlights Loftus's car crash study, showing how subtle language altered speed memories and implanted false details, and reviews the "Lost in the Mall" experiment which proved fabricated autobiographical memories can be instilled. Matt also notes that neuroimaging reveals false and true memory patterns in the hippocampus are remarkably similar, underscoring memory's deceptive, fluid nature, rather than a factual archive. Our host goes on to discuss groundbreaking research like optogenetics from Tonegawa's lab, demonstrating manipulation to implant false fear memories at a cellular level. This underpins "memory reconsolidation" by Karim Nader, showing retrieved memories enter a "labile window" for modification. This opens profound avenues for therapies: Image Rehearsal Therapy for nightmares and propranolol for PTSD effectively weaken emotional trauma. The episode concludes by suggesting identity, objective truth, and forgiveness are dynamic, neurologically modifiable constructs, not static realities. Please note that Matt is not a medical doctor, and none of the content in this podcast should be considered medical advice in any way, shape, or form, nor prescriptive in any way.Podcast partner and sponsor, Shopify, made launching Matt's merchandise incredibly smooth with its integrated sales system. Author Geoff Loftus discusses his new book, The Devil's Vacation. It is the tenth book in his Jack Tyrrell thriller series. The main character, Jack Tyrrell, is a former Special Forces veteran and Deputy U.S. Marshall who solves crimes and rights wrongs with the help of his guardian angel. In The Devil's Vacation, which is set on a small island off the coast of Rhode Island, Jack finds his summer vacation interrupted by a brutal double murder. The deaths have familiar hallmarks, and Jack and his guardian angel are forced into a confrontation with evil in the form of a serial killer and his guardian devil. This series—its story line and the main characters—were inspired by Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
Join us as we sit down with South Carolina State Treasurer Curtis Loftus to discuss the Future Scholar 529 College Savings Plan, a program helping families save for higher education with tax advantages and incredible flexibility. Treasurer Loftus shares his personal story of setting up a 529 account for his daughter, Treasure, and watching it grow into a five-figure college fund—proving that consistent contributions, even small ones, can make a huge difference. He breaks down how the plan works like a state-tax-deductible IRA: contributions grow tax-free, and withdrawals for tuition are also tax-free. The program isn't just for college-bound high schoolers—funds can be used at accredited colleges, trade schools, and specialty programs nationwide, and even applied toward student loan repayment or rolled into a Roth IRA. Grandparents, friends, and extended family can contribute, too, giving everyone a chance to help make education more affordable. With over 200,000 participants and $7 billion in assets, Future Scholar demonstrates how smart financial planning can prevent debt and give students a head start. Treasurer Loftus walks through how easy it is to sign up at futurescholar.com and why this program has become a game-changer for South Carolina families.

In this in-depth interview, South Carolina State Treasurer Curtis Loftus joins the show to discuss the financial health and security of the state — and how global threats like Nicolás Maduro's regime and transnational crime impact local economies. Treasurer Loftus sheds light on how taxpayer funds are managed, the importance of financial transparency, and the risks posed by criminal networks operating across borders. From inflation and spending to national security implications for state-level budgeting, Loftus provides a grounded yet urgent look at the intersection of public finance and global instability. A must-listen for anyone concerned about where their tax dollars go — and how state leaders are navigating an increasingly complex financial landscape.
The Mandela Effect, named by paranormal researcher Fiona Broome in 2010, refers to collective false memories where groups misremember events or details, like Nelson Mandela dying in the 1980s (he died in 2013). Psychological studies, such as Loftus and Palmer's 1974 experiments, demonstrate how language can distort memories, while Broome suggests alternate realities or timeline shifts as causes, though these lack scientific support. Examples include misremembering the Berenstain Bears as “Berenstein,” Monopoly's Rich Uncle Pennybags with a monocle, or Darth Vader saying “Luke, I am your father” instead of “No, I am your father.” Historical cases involve myths like Columbus discovering the Americas first or Vikings wearing horned helmets. The International Mandela Effect Conference (IMEC) explores quantum theory connections, but psychological factors like memory fallibility and social influence are more accepted. While the phenomenon sparks curiosity about human memory, it can also foster distrust in reality, fuel conspiracies, and highlight cognitive fragility, potentially undermining shared historical truths.
