Hark the herald, angels sing; joy to the Burger King! It's Christmas time again folks and that means that it is my personal favorite time of the year. Ever since I was a boy, apart from my brief stint as a rabid and rather boring fundamentalist Christian Grinch, I loved everything about Christmas. Yes, even the parts that require hard work like cooking and wrapping presents. I still remember my mom, sister and I all hanging out together wrapping presents, telling jokes and watching Christmas comedy movies like Home Alone II, A Christmas Story and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (one of the most underrated Christmas movies ever made in my humble opinion). What a joyous time of year that was! We would wrap presents and laugh together for hours on end. Then it was time to cook and we always made the most wonderful scalloped potatoes drenched in heavy cream and Swiss cheese. I can see them bubbling now. As I write this on what was a very Merry Christmas Eve (my sister even visited us this year; we missed out on last year so it was really nice spending time with her again) I am also planning my cooking schedule for tomorrow. I will be making a nice beef roast, those bubbly scalloped potatoes, roasted corn, and garlic cheese bread. In case you have not noticed I love cheese. I already have some chocolate cherry cookies ready to go for when my mom comes over, and I will probably bake more cookies and pies tomorrow, along with a little homemade eggnog. So, you know, no big thing. Just the usual yuletide schedule. This year, in celebration of my favorite holiday, my gift to you is the origins of Christmas time and what it has meant to different cultures down through the ages. While it is certainly true that Christmas is not a Christian holiday, I also am sure to recognize the various contributions that Christians made to it, like making fruitcake more palatable, cutting out the whole slaves cleaning up their masters' barf thing (yes, that was actually a real job that Romans slaves had to do in ancient Rome, and you thought your job was bad) and discouraging random drunk carolers at ungodly hours. However, I cannot help but give the pagans their props as well. Paganism has been so demonized by modern conservative Christians that you would think it has had no influence on Christmas whatsoever, but nothing could be further from the truth. If anyone knew how to party, it was the pagans, and Christmas is still, to this very day, even with all the conservative chestnuts out there, a time for great joy and revelry. This comes from the ancient holiday of Saturnalia, which has been described by pagan historians as being like the movie "The Purge". There were no laws during Saturnalia and you could pretty much get away with anything you want. Gender bending sex was allowed and so were other vices like gluttony, hedonism and bad singing. While we have left a lot of the less savory parts of Saturnalia behind, gender bending sex is still widely available on the internet for free and country western stars everywhere release a new Christmas album every year to keep the bad singing thing alive and well. But Saturnalia is just one of the pagan traditions that Christmas is based on. There was also the pagan celebration of yule, which is where we get terms like "yule log and yuletide", which many modern day pagans, Wiccans are a good example, still celebrate today without even getting their houses burnt to the ground or thrown in rivers to drown this time around. Now that's what I call progress! So, this year I ask you all to appreciate Christmas for what it is: a combination of many different cultures coming together to exchange gifts, eat rich food and get a pretty good buzz going. If there is one thing that I can be apolitical about, it is this truly joyous day. Even the Christians of old refused to let Christmas die because they wanted to remember their ancestors. So let's not be Scrooges or Grinches this year. Happy holidays! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/morecontentplease/support

That didn't stop Ashley from believing in magic - instead, it led to a lifelong belief in all things magical. Magic is with us everyday - it isn't just the realm of magic practitioners, witches, or wicca - it's also the realm of ordinary, everyday people. Think about a time when you saw a rainbow that took your breath away. Think about the time when you were mesmerized by an ant or bird or lizard - anything nature. Think about the time when someone did something and you were profoundly moved. All those experiences are magic and magical - and whether they are momentary or longer - you've been touched by magic. When Sparrow heard that she was going to have the opportunity to interview the likes of Lilith Dorsey, she was more than excited. You see, Lilith wrote this book called Water Magic and it's one of the books in the Elements of Witchcraft series that Llewelyn is publishing. We've spoken to another author in the series, Dodie Graham McKay and the Editor of the Series Heather Greene in previous episodes.  Lilith's voice evokes water magic as it moves around and through  your senses. 00:05Welcome to Mosaic, your Novant Health podcast for diversity, inclusion and equity. You'll learn more about the mosaic of similarities and differences that make us stronger, and how health equity benefits us all. Piece by piece. We're telling the stories of the beautiful mosaic of Novant Health. 00:25Hello again, this is Becky Knight coordinator of Novant Health 14 business resource groups. Business resource groups, or BRG's, are an important part of the Novant Health diversity inclusion and equity strategy. A BRG is a voluntary group of team members organized around an aspect of common identity, such as age, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or veteran status. The groups work together to support each other our business in diversity and inclusion strategies and constituency needs. One of the themes over the past year has been for our BRG's to host webinars to highlight holidays and observances that have special meaning to them. These webinars are an accessible way for our team members to share about their traditions, beliefs and culture. And it lets us get to know each other better, and to be able to better understand and anticipate the needs of our patients and communities. And this episode of mosaic, we'll hear from several Novant Health BRG members, sharing about Dia de los Muertos. samhain, Transgender Day of Remembrance, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. 01:37First we have David Avalos, sharing about Dia de los Muertos. 01:43Dia De Los Muertos basically is a custom, it's a custom that is derived from an old ancient Aztec custom. And then there has been some influence from the Catholic Church. So Dia De Los Muertos is translated into Day of the Dead here in the United States. Death is something that's very grim and solemn and sad. And that is not the way they view death in Mexican culture. So day of the dead is really a celebration. So it's a celebration of life, it's to honor your ancestors that have moved on, or that have passed away. So we're here in the States people are kind of solemn and sad, and tend to wear dark clothes and things of that nature. In Mexican culture, it's very loud and vibrant and colorful. So there's, there's a lot of beauty involved with the celebration of this Day of the Dead, you're going to hear later on about Samhain and how on that day, there's this veil that's between our world and the spirit world. And it is believed that the veil is thin during this time. So it allows spirits to enter into our world. And that's not a scary thing in Spanish culture. That's something where these are your ancestors. This is your family. So you want to welcome them. So that's why they have these altars with offerings and they have celebrations and parties and they usually cook food and the food that they cook is usually what that relative's favorite meal was. So um, Day of the Dead you all will probably know it as All Saints Day or All Souls Day. So we celebrate it on November first and November second. So November 1 is technically believed that's when the children who have passed come back to visit and celebrate. They call them on angelitos, which means little angels. And then on the following day, November 2, that's when the adults turn up for the festivities. They don't call them the angels, they call them the deceased, they call them difuntos. Family members usually will prepare for several weeks in advance for this summer celebration, creating their offerings and decorating their altars and things of that nature. 04:08Next, Willette Balsamo speaks about Samhain. 04:12You know it, most people know it, as Halloween. Here are some of the other names, there are many. All Hallows Eve, Samhain, it's hard to pronounce. A lot of the a lot of things come from Celtic, or Irish, if you will, Scotland, The Isles the British Isles. A lot of it came from them. Also Egypt. There's many many histories of where Wiccans, more modern version of witchcraft. But it was also practice in China. So everybody's got their own little twist on this. So the pronunciation is pronounced “sow win” like s-o-w  like a Mama Pig, or “sow ween.” The meaning of that. There's a couple of beliefs that it means summer's end, while others find that called fire of peace, and a lot of that has to do with the bonfires and the harvest, it's also called third harvest, spirit night, hollow mass, Mischief Night, probably heard that, ancestor night and more. And it's also during this time that we open our hearts and our bodies to death. We honor those that have died whenever it's usually those this year, but it doesn't matter you can honor whomever you wish. We acknowledge sorrow and loss. We believe in an afterlife. We also believe in rebirth or reincarnation. 05:58Our coexist and pride BRGs co hosted a webinar for Transgender Day of Remembrance. Here is Nick Stewart. 06:06Began over 20 years ago, Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed to focus on the persistent struggles, transgender people face in their everyday lives, and how others can share their love, support and hope. Today, we especially remember those who in the past year, have lost their lives as a result of transphobia and anti transgender violence. We come together to acknowledge that all people of all identities are welcome in our organization, in our facilities, and in our communities. We recognize today that some face violence and hatred simply for being who they are. We gather against acts of exclusion, anger and hate. And we respond with remembrance, hope, and love. We come together from different backgrounds, origins, groups and disciplines to intentionally remember that we are one humanity, and that all people are created beautifully. We stand together for those who have died for their families, and for those among us who identify as transgender, that they might know that they are not alone, that we stand with them, and that they are loved. 07:20Now we'll learn about Hanukkah from Marcia Lampert.  Hanukkah is a holiday that's really mostly based on folklore. It's not what we would consider a holy day. Our holy days are around the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, well, and Passover as well. So this is really a holiday that celebrates a bright message and a theme and allows us to celebrate freedom. The word Hanukkah means rededication. And that was the story in 2000 BC that a group of people destroyed the temple. And when they destroyed the temple, the eternal flame, there was not enough oil for the flame to continue more than one day. But miraculously, it went on for eight days. We go by like Muslim, we go by the lunar calendar, so it's never the same day every year, but it usually ends up in December. For eight nights, we light the candles and we say a prayer. And we also very much in the theme of everything we do we always eat. So we are always eating during holidays, foods that symbolize something. But in Hanukkah, because of the oil, the oil from the temple that lasted for eight days. The foods that we generally eat our homemade potato pancakes, you know, in oil, and jelly doughnuts made an oil, very healthy. So a lot of gathering singing songs. Again, making it fun. But keeping the same of this light that lasted for eight days, how we were able to take back the temple and renew our faith.  Finally, you Vaughn Dixon shares about Kwanzaa. 09:21Beginning December 26, and lasting for seven days. Kwanzaa is a celebration of community, family and culture, established as a means to help African Americans reconnect with their African roots and heritage. And there are three official Kwanzaa colors. Black, red and green. There are seven candles, one Black Candle, three red candles, and three green candles. Each candle represents one of the seven principles guiding Kwanzaa they are placed in a mission Masaba in a specific order, each candle is lit on a specific day of Kwanzaa of the seven day celebration. The Black Candle the principal represents you Mojo, which means the concept of unity is a focus on the unity of family, community, nation and race. This candle is always lit first on the opening day of Kwanzaa of which again is the 26th of December, day two is collegia Gulia, which is self determination is the second principle. It represents defining, naming, creating, and speaking for oneself. This is the second candle lit on day three, which is you Jama. This is the third principle and is defined as collective work and responsibility. This encompasses building and maintaining the community by working together, taking on each other's problems and solving them together. This is the third candle. The fourth candle is the principle of cooperative economics, you Jama. This encompasses building and maintaining individually owned stores, shops, and other businesses. This goal is to profit from these endeavors as a community so we're talking about socio economics and the community. This is the fourth candle lit. 11:34There are three green candles, each representing a specific principle. These candles are placed on the right of the Black Candle, and the last ones that are lit on day five, which is Nia Nia. This is the principle of purpose and takes on the collective vocation of building the community and developing it as a way to restore African Americans and pan Americans to their traditional greatness. This is the fifth candle that is lit on day six, which is Khumba KUUM. Ba this candle celebrates the principle of creativity. The goal of this principle is to do everything possible to make a difference and leave the community in better condition than what was inherited. This is the sixth candle that is lit. And finally on day seven, you Imani? I am a ni Imani. This is the crucible of faith. It challenges people to believe in each other and honor their struggle as righteous and that they'll be victorious. This is the last candle to be lit. All seven candles are lit on this particular day. 12:59Thanks for listening to mosaic your podcasts for diversity, inclusion and equity and Novant Health. Stay tuned for our next exciting episode.

Black Widow.   This comes straight from Marvel Studios President/Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige, one of many who paid tribute to Johansson at a ceremony honoring her as the 35th recipient of the annual American Cinematheque Award. “We are already working with Scarlett on another non-Black Widow-related top-secret Marvel Studios project with her as a producer,” said Feige (per The Hollywood Reporter). He went on to call Johansson "one of the most talented, versatile and beloved actors of our time," later adding, "Working with you Scarlett has truly been one of the most memorable and rewarding collaborations of my career.”   Feige's announcement comes on the heels of Johansson settling her Black Widow lawsuit with Disney at the end of September. The Oscar-nominee took legal action against the House of Mouse in July, alleging that Disney breached her contract by giving the film a day-and-date release in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access without allowing her to renegotiate her deal. This led to a public war of words between Disney and Johansson's legal reps, with the former calling the latter's lawsuit "callous [in its] disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic."   “It was a very surreal time because, of course, the film had come out and was hugely successful and that was a big celebration. I had a baby, and that was obviously a life-changing, amazing, celebratory thing,” said Johansson, discussing the Black Widow lawsuit on the red carpet for the American Cinematheque ceremony. “In a way, that sort of buoyed me through the very uncertain, stressful time. I feel mostly very fortunate that nobody will have to go through what I went through and that it's made, I think, a positive impact in the industry and hopefully for artists and creatives' lives and livelihood.”   Black Widow, which took place between the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018), served as a coda to Natasha's story in the MCU after the character sacrificed her life to help save the day in Avengers: Endgame (2019). The film also ended with a post-credits scene laying the groundwork for Natasha's fellow Red Room trainee and sister-figure, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), to return in the Hawkeye series on Disney+.   Johansson's mystery Marvel Studios venture is one of two projects she's working on with Disney at the moment, along with a movie based on the company's Tower of Terror theme park attraction. The latter, which Johansson is producing with an eye on starring in, has yet to receive a release date.   Marvel's Hawkeye: Hailee Steinfeld and Kevin Feige's Young Avengers Reaction Goes Viral https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/marvel-hawkeye-hailee-steinfeld-kevin-feige-young-avengers-reaction-meme/ https://twitter.com/Hawkmaestro21/status/1460711493163532296 Kevin Feige and Hailee Steinfeld are keeping the Young Avengers arrow in the quiver. In the Marvel Studios series premiering November 24 on Disney+, Steinfeld enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe as expert archer and Hawkeye fangirl Kate Bishop, the self-taught protege of eagle-eyed ex-Avenger Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner). During a press conference with the cast of Hawkeye, a cautious Steinfeld looked to the Marvel Studios president and producer before answering a question about Kate Bishop's future as a member of the Young Avengers, a team of young adult superheroes formed after the Avengers disassemble.    "I mean, listen, this feels so crazy to me right now just sitting here with this group of people. I'm so grateful to be a part of this show in this universe, and it's only the beginning," Steinfeld said when asked about Young Avengers. "This shows not even out, so I'm looking forward to that day."   aking on the mantle of Hawkeye, Bishop becomes a member and leader of the Young Avengers and the West Coast Avengers. Speaking exclusively to ComicBook's Phase Zero podcast, the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Apple TV+'s Dickinson star spoke out on her Marvel future after teaming with Renner's Barton in the six-episode Hawkeye.    "It's always exciting, the thought of any character you play, where it could go. And especially with something like this," Steinfeld said. "You've seen the first two episodes, and there's a whole lot more that happens in the four that are to come. That's where my head is at."    Elizabeth Olsen, whose Wanda Maximoff births two future Young Avengers in Disney+'s WandaVision, said over the summer she's not aware of plans for twins Tommy (Jett Kline) and Billy Maximoff (Julian Hilliard) to join the roster as Speed and Wiccan. Phase Four of the MCU has already added prospective members Eli Bradley (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's Elijah Richardson) and Kid Loki (Loki's Jack Veal), with more on the way: America Chavez (Doctor Strange 2's Xochitl Gomez) and Cassie Lang (Ant-Man 3's Kathryn Newton).    "As a comic fan, anything in the comics is always our inspiration and our guide point. How those things come together and in what shape, it's always subverting expectations, it's always half the fun as meeting them," Feige previously told Entertainment Weekly when asked if series like WandaVision and Hawkeye are building towards Young Avengers. "But, yes, you can certainly see that Phase Four is introducing all sorts of new types of characters with the potential being endless. Now, all of us at Marvel Studios feel like Nick Fury at the end of Iron Man 1, as new actors and new performers come in and we tell them they're part of a bigger universe. They just now have to do the work required to build their audience."   Feige added: "I'm happy to say everybody that's here, certainly where I'm sitting now, is doing amazing work and [I] can't wait to show them the world."   See reactions to Feige and Steinfeld's meme-able exchange below. The two-episode premiere of Marvel's Hawkeye is November 24 on Disney+.    Disney+ confirms launch of new Marvel movie ‘Eternals' on January 12, 2022 https://streamingguider.com/eternals-disney-plus-movie-2021/ Marvel Studios' new movie Eternals (2021) was released in theaters earlier this month, but has already received a release date on Disney+. The streaming service has informed Streaming Guider's editors that the superhero movie will be available worldwide on Disney's video on demand platform starting January 12, 2022.   ➝ This announcement first appeared in Dutch on Streamwijzer.nl, the largest website about streaming in the Netherlands ✅   Superhero movie ‘Eternals' (film, 2021) will launch at Disney+ on January 12, 2022 The very first new title on Disney+ in January 2022 has been announced and it's a big one: Eternals! The Marvel film is making quite a splash with the first openly gay character and the first sex scene. In addition, the leads are played by an amazing cast including Angelina Jolie and Richard Madden.   Disney+ has confirmed to Streaming Guider's editors that there is already a date in the calendar for the release of the superhero film. Starting Wednesday, January 12, 2022, Eternals will be available in all countries where the streaming service operates. That's approximately 70 days after the theatrical release, a comparable gap as for the launch of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021).   The choice to release the movie on a Wednesday is remarkable, as movies usually appear on Disney+ on Fridays and (episodes of) series on Wednesdays. The video on demand platform seems to be experimenting to determine the best weekday for new releases. For example, Black Widow previously appeared on a Wednesday (as of October 6 for all subscribers) and the streaming service released the premiere episodes of the hit series Dopesick on Disney+ Day (Friday, November 12) in several countries.   Mixed reviews Viewers and critics seemed to disagree about the quality of Eternals after its theatrical release. On IMDb, the film scored a 6.8 out of (so far) 106,000 votes. That's fine for an average film, but not very high for a Marvel film. Yet, for example, Captain Marvel (2019 | 6.8), Thor: The Dark World (2013 | 6.8), Black Widow (2021 | 6.7) and The Incredible Hulk (2008 | 6.6) were given equal or lower marks.   At Rotten Tomatoes, Eternals does score the lowest of all Marvel films with 48% out of 359 reviews on the Tomatometer. The audience disagree, as the Audience Score actually constitutes an excellent 80% from over 5,000 votes. So take a quick look at the film as soon as it shows up on Disney+ and let us know what you think about it.   Plot, information and trailer of ‘Eternals' op Disney+ Marvel Studios' Eternals follows a group of heroes from beyond the stars who have been protecting Earth since the dawn of man. When monstrous creatures called the Deviants return, while long thought lost mysteriously, the Eternals are forced to reunite to defend humanity once again.   DISNEY+   Hawkeye: Hailee Steinfeld Compares Kate Bishop to Her Into the Spider-Verse Role https://www.cbr.com/hawkeye-hailee-steinfeld-kate-bishop-compares-gwen-stacy Hawkeye actor Hailee Steinfeld talks about playing both Kate Bishop and Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse   Actor Hailee Steinfeld has now addressed having played both Kate Bishop in Disney+'s Hawkeye and Gwen Stacy in Sony's animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film.   In a press conference attended by CBR, Steinfeld was asked to compare her role as Gwen to her time as Bishop. "It's incredibly cool," Steinfeld said. "I feel so honored to be a part of both projects. They're characters that have similarities, but they're very different. Of course, one is animation, and one is not, and two completely different worlds. But I always love that -- I do find the characters that I have played in the past do have this sort of consistency in being these young women who are strong-minded, have a point of view, have an idea of who they are in this world and they really stop at nothing to get what they want to achieve. I think that both Gwen Stacy and Kate Bishop are proof that if you set your mind to something, you can really achieve great things."   Created by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung, Kate Bishop made her debut in 2005's Young Avengers #1, taking up the mantle of Hawkeye following Clint Barton's death. Rumors of Steinfeld's casting as Kate in Hawkeye began in 2020, with her role officially confirmed at the end of that year. Hawkeye will see her teaming up with Clint to take on the enemies he made while using the name Ronin.   An alternate version of Peter Parker's classic love interest of the same name, Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman was created by Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez. First appearing in 2014's Edge of Spider-Verse #2, Gwen hails from a reality where she was bitten by a radioactive spider instead of Peter. The Into the Spider-Verse version of the character found herself pulled into a different reality, though by the end of the movie she'd returned to her home world.   Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, Into the Spider-Verse released in 2018. The film saw Miles Morales team up with several characters from different universes with similar powers to himself so to save New York from Kingpin. The movie did well at the box office, grossing more than $375 million worldwide against a budget of approximately $90 million. Into the Spider-Verse received praise from critics, earning a 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.   Created by Jonathan Igla, Hawkeye is slated to release Nov. 24 on Disney+. At this time, it's not clear when Steinfeld will next appear in the MCU after Hawkeye, though she is slated to appear in multiple projects. Steinfeld will reprise her role as Gwen when the first sequel to Into the Spider-Verse releases on Oct. 7, 2022. While the official title hasn't been confirmed at this time, there's some evidence the movie will be called Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.   Hawkeye's Story Arc Leads Directly Into a Future Disney+ Marvel Series https://www.cbr.com/hawkeye-leads-directly-into-echo-series Marvel boss Kevin Feige and Hawkeye director Rhys Thomas explain how the Disney+ series will lead directly into Echo, starring Alaqua Cox.   Marvel's upcoming Hawkeye Disney+ series will lead directly into the recently announced Echo series starring Alaqua Cox.   During a press conference attended by CBR, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Hawkeye director Rhys Thomas were asked about Cox's Maya Lopez/Echo and what can be expected for her in the forthcoming Disney+ series. According to Feige, Cox "came in as a cold audition and sort of read a number of different times."   "She's amazing," Feige continued. "I can't wait for people who've seen the first two episodes have seen a very brief moment. It will be fun to see the audience discover Maya over the course of this series and then in her own series later. As announced on Disney+ Day last week, the Echo series will be -- we see Maya Lopez go from the end of this series into that series will be the next direct link."   Maya Lopez/Echo, a deaf Native American superhero, will be introduced in Hawkeye, which wrapped filming in April and will premiere on the streaming service in November, though the nature of her role in the show currently remains unknown. It was reported in March that the Echo spinoff series was in development, with Etan and Emily Cohen writing and producing the series. While it had been reported on for some time, Echo was officially confirmed by Marvel Studios and Disney during Disney+ Day with the release of the series' official logo.   Thomas, replying to Feige, said that Cox "has amazing determination." Regarding her audition process, Thomas went on to say, "She never performed before, but seemed completely unfazed when we came back. We really sort of put her through the wringer. But she never once botched and has kind of walked into this universe like she should've always been there."   In a recent promo for the upcoming Hawkeye series, audiences were introduced to the MCU's latest villain, Fra Fee's The Clown. Cox's Maya Lopez/Echo was seen alongside him, with both characters seemingly holding Clint Barton hostage before he is rescued by Haylee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop. While Maya is typically a hero in the comics, it was unclear in the trailer why she would be working with The Clown, though it could have something to do with her adopted father, Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, in the comics.   Created by David Mack and Joe Quesada, Maya Lopez/Echo first appeared in Daredevil #9 in 1999 and is one of the few Native American and deaf characters in comics overall. Similar to the Avengers villain Taskmaster, Echo's powers include photographic reflexes, giving her the ability to perfectly mimic the movements of other people. Echo was first introduced to comics as a supporting character for Daredevil and it's speculated that her involvement in Hawkeye could be a way for Matthew Murdock/Daredevil to officially enter the MCU. It has also been reported that both Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld will reprise their Hawkeye roles in Echo as well.   WandaVision's 'Agatha All Along' Conjures Up a Grammy Nomination https://www.cbr.com/marvel-wandavision-agatha-all-along-grammy-nomination/ The song "Agatha All Along" from Marvel Studios' debut Disney+ original series WandaVision is up for an award at the 64th GRAMMY Awards in January.   Per the official list of nominees for the 2022 GRAMMYs, "Agatha All Along" -- written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez -- has been nominated for Best Song Written For Visual Media. The fan-favorite track was brought to life by the Lopezes, featuring Kathryn Hahn, Eric Bradley, Greg Whipple, Jasper Randall and Gerald White.   Going up against "Agatha All Along" in the category of Best Song Written For Visual Media are "All Eyes On Me" by Bo Burnham (from Inside), "All I Know So Far" by P!nk (from P!NK: All I Know So Far), "Fight For You" by H.E.R. (from Judas and the Black Messiah), "Here I Am (Singing My Way Home)" by Jennifer Hudson (from Respect) and "Speak Now" by Leslie Odom Jr. (from One Night in Miami...).   WandaVision premiered on Disney+ earlier this year on Jan. 15 to kick off Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series' seventh episode, "Breaking the Fourth Wall" -- which aired on Feb. 19 -- revealed that Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision's (Paul Bettany) nosy neighbor, Agnes (Kathryn Hahn), was actually the classic Marvel Comics character Agatha Harkness, and that she was the one who had been disrupting Wanda and Vision's seemingly peaceful life in Westview.   This revelation sets up the musical number "Agatha All Along," performed by Hahn as Agatha. On Feb. 24 -- a few days after "Breaking the Fourth Wall" initially dropped -- "Agatha All Along" was added to music streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and Pandora. The song had nearly broken 1.8 million plays on Spotify by the time WandaVision's finale (aptly titled "The Series Finale") hit Disney+ on March 5.   WandaVision leads directly into the upcoming Marvel Studios film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which hits theaters on May 6, 2022. The film will see Olsen reprise her role as the newly-christened Scarlet Witch. Meanwhile, Hahn is set to return as Agatha Harkness in Agatha: House of Harkness, a spinoff series Marvel Studios is producing for Disney+. Hahn's deal with Marvel also reportedly calls for additional appearances across both film and television.   The 64th GRAMMY Awards will air on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Monday, Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. ET.   ‘Hawkeye' EP Trinh Tran on Casting Hailee Steinfeld and the Influence of ‘Better Call Saul' https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/hawkeye-movie-tv-show-marvel-disney-1235050780/ The Marvel executive reflects on why Jeremy Renner's project was moved from film to TV: "The big question was, 'How are we going to fit all of this into a two-hour timeframe?'"   Hawkeye and Avengers: Endgame executive producer Trinh Tran never doubted whether Clint Barton/Hawkeye's Endgame storyline warranted further exploration. Instead, it was a question of which medium was best suited to tell the street-level story of Jeremy Renner's Avenger and his quest to get home in time for Christmas. Tran, along with her fellow Marvel Studios producers, quickly realized that the Hawkeye project would benefit creatively if it transitioned from the feature film side of the studio to the newly-established Disney+ side.   “We decided to move Hawkeye from the feature side over to the Disney+ side for [creative flexibility],” Tran tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The big question was, ‘How are we going to fit all of this into a two-hour timeframe? We have an Avenger whose backstory we haven't quite had time to explore yet . We also have to introduce a new character [Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop], as well as allow enough time for them to bond and create that special dynamic that everybody finds so appealing in the comics.' So, in moving it over, it allowed us six hours, three times as much time, which really gave us the creative flexibility we needed to tell the story.”   In September 2019, when Hailee Steinfeld was reported to be playing Barton's protégé Kate Bishop on Hawkeye, fans rejoiced unanimously until Steinfeld herself cast doubt on the idea. This led to some speculation that the actor's existing contract with Apple TV+'s Dickinson may have caused a snag in the proceeding. However, Tran was always confident that Steinfeld would be involved as Bishop.   “When [Hailee] came in to meet, we knew right off the bat that she was the person we had been looking for all these years,” Tran shares. “It was just a matter of we couldn't quite talk about her involvement all this time. So the speculation in terms of whether she was in or not was just us trying to figure out how we can carry out the series during this time and get it delivered in time for this holiday season.”   Prior to Black Widow‘s release, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige referenced Breaking Bad prequel/sequel, Better Call Saul, as an influence on Widow‘s prequel storytelling. Then Marvel Studios hired former Better Call Saul writer Marion Dayre to lead the writers' room for Echo, which stars Alaqua Cox in the eponymous role. (Hawkeye will first introduce the character.) Furthermore, Better Call Saul‘s Tony Dalton also plays the enigmatic role of Jack Duquesne on Hawkeye, and Tran confirms that Better Call Saul was a key factor in Dalton's casting.   “I absolutely love Tony Dalton from Better Call Saul!” Tran says. “When we were talking about who would be great as Jack Duquesne, Tony obviously came to mind because he is incredible in that series. I can't say much about his character in [Hawkeye], but as you can see in the earlier episodes, there's a quality in Jack that will hopefully intrigue people into figuring out what's happening.”   In a recent conversation with THR, Tran also explains why the decision was made to make Hawkeye a bit more lighthearted than previous MCU series.   Since WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki each explored some heavy subject matters and themes at times, was Hawkeye always designed to be something a bit lighter for the holidays? Was Hawkeye meant to be a response to those shows?   Well, as we were brainstorming and talking about the story a couple of years ago, we were trying to figure out how we can set this series apart from Wandavision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki. And one way was to set it around the holiday times. Out of all of the characters, it made sense for Clint Barton's story to be told around this time of year because he's a family guy. He's one of the few Avengers with kids, and after the fallout of what happened in Endgame — where he lost his kids for five years, became Ronin and got them back — this is the first Christmas that he's going to be spending with his family. And the big question of the series is if he's going to be able to make it home in time in order to do so. So there's that big weight that he's trying to figure out as he's stuck elsewhere. He's trying to deal with something that has put him on this mission and he has to figure out how to get out of it. And in terms of the lightheartedness, we wanted to show a different side of Clint that we haven't seen before, in comparison to all of the Avengers movies that he's in. And I find it so much more interesting that there is a version of Clint that is a little bit more humorous from the Matt Fraction [comic book] run. So we wanted to pull a little bit of that into the series, and we thought that Kate Bishop, out of everybody, was the perfect candidate in order to do so.   Everyone celebrated when Hailee Steinfeld's casting was reported, but then there was a period of uncertainty as to whether it would actually happen. Were you always confident that things would work out?   Yes, we love Hailee. When we were talking about who would be the perfect candidate for Kate Bishop, names were thrown into the hat, and we all loved Hailee. We think she's tremendously talented. When she came in to meet, we knew right off the bat that she was the person we had been looking for all these years, once we had talked about who this person is and what she can bring to the table. Hailee did an incredible job, and we were all very happy with the onscreen Kate Bishop that she delivered. It was just a matter of we couldn't quite talk about her involvement all this time. So the speculation in terms of whether she was in or not was just us trying to figure out how we can carry out the series during this time and get it delivered in time for this holiday season.   Kevin Feige has referenced a certain show as a touchstone for Black Widow‘s prequel storytelling. You also hired one of its writers, Marion Dayre, as the lead writer of Echo. And now, with Hawkeye‘s casting of Tony Dalton, is it safe to say that Marvel Studios is rather fond of Better Call Saul?   I absolutely love Tony Dalton from Better Call Saul! When we were talking about who would be great as Jack Duquesne, Tony obviously came to mind because he is incredible in that series. He brings a different tone to this particular character that people haven't quite seen yet. I can't say much about his character in the series, but as you can see in the earlier episodes, there's a quality in Jack that will hopefully intrigue people into figuring out what's happening.   What I love about Marvel Studios' TV shows is that they're able to devote more time to character development than a two-hour movie can. From your vantage point, are the TV shows already making your feature directors' lives easier since they don't have to squeeze six episodes of character work into their two-hour runtimes?   It allows us the creative flexibility to explore the characters a lot more because we have the time and space to do so. We decided to move Hawkeye from the feature side over to the Disney+ side for that very reason. The big question was, “How are we going to fit all of this into a two-hour timeframe? We have an Avenger whose backstory we haven't quite had time to explore yet . We also have to introduce a new character, as well as allow enough time for them to bond and create that special dynamic that everybody finds so appealing in the comics.” So, in moving it over, it allowed us six hours, three times as much time, which really gave us the creative flexibility we needed to tell the story. But challenges come with it as well. We have a process at Marvel and we try to maintain that same process both on the feature side and the TV series side. We treat it as one process that works well for us. But things happen faster on the TV end. We have the same amount of time that we normally do on the feature end, but we have three times as much content that we have to deliver in a shorter time span.   So I've only got a few seconds left, but I have to say that I'm fascinated by the Marvel Studios Parliament, which counts you as a member [along with Stephen Broussard, Eric Carroll, Nate Moore and Brad Winderbaum]. Do you each have a special blazer with a crest on it? Is there a secret handshake? How do you signify your membership?   (Laughs.) That's great, actually. I'm going to go back to my parliament colleagues and go, “We should definitely come up with a handshake of some sort.” If there is a blazer, I didn't get one. (Laughs.) Can you call Kevin Feige and ask where my blazer is?   I'll make some calls!   (Laughs.) But that is actually a great idea. I'm going to go back to the other parliament members and say that we should come up with a secret code or something. Khelan) (59:20)   DOC: Hello Billy, I'm Dr. Issues. BILLY: Hey Doc.  D: How are you?  B: I mean, things have been worse. D: That's not exactly a rousing endorsement. B: Sorry, I just mean there were a lot of questions that were driving me crazy, and I don't have nearly as many as I did before. That's a good thing. D: I'm glad to hear that. So what lingers? B: Still a ton of stuff. *pause* This is a bit hard, you know? I get it's your job, but sometimes I think even professionals will misinterpret what I'm saying, so I'm careful with what I let out. D: Totally understandable. Just remember that this is confidential, so even if things don't go as expected, they stay between us as long as no one is put in danger. B: Good to know. D: So, name something you want to discuss. B: Iwanttobecalmiwanttobecalmiwanttobecalm… D: Excuse me? B: Sorry, just wanted to be sure I was in the right headspace before I started. Is it wrong to want your husband to be around more? D: That...sounds like a loaded question. I take it you mean “more than he is now” and that there is some sort of barrier to that? B: Exactly. D: Does he disagree with you? B: NOT exactly. It's more to do with...outside activities. D: Are they activities that you approve of? B: I don't have a choice. D: There's always a choice; it's just a matter of consequences. B: Well, the consequences here involve the wellbeing of a whole empire, so do with that what you will. D: *pause* Heavy stuff. B: And listen, I'm so proud of him taking on this responsibility, and he does it so well and capably. And it doesn't hurt that he looks AMAZING with a crown on his head. I just… I want some more US time, y'know? D: For once when talking to a superhero, I DO know, quite well. How far would you say the scale has shifted? B: Oh, he hasn't packed on weight or anything. He still can bench press D: *interrupting* I'm glad that you're clearly still into him physically...what I meant was, on the work-life balance spectrum of his time with the crown versus his time with you, where is he on that scale? B: Hmmmm...maybe 75-25? No that's too harsh. How about 60-40. D: Your first answer was your gut, and that's ok. Intuition that's unrecognized can lead to dangerous emotional impulse. Your second answer sounds like what you would settle for. But tell me...really. What do you want it to be? B: The selfish side of me would say 5-95, and that's being generous. I just… we're newly married, our honeymoon was interrupted by symbiote dragons attacking the resort, and it seems like he can't make a decision without having to worry about some intergalactic treaty or alliance hanging on his every move. I love him, and I'll be his ride or die until neither of us draw breath, but I confess I did NOT see this as part of the whole “till death do us part” thing when I fell in love with him. So the simple answer is I don't honestly know what a good balance would be, but I know this ain't it. D: That may be one of the most mature answers I've heard in a long time. I'm not going to promise that those outside factors are going to change, but I can vow that it is my ethical duty to help your attempts at discovering a better balance each time we discuss it in each session. My only caution to you is to not expect things to just magically change. B: Except you realize who you're talking to, right? D: Yes, but even still- B: Iwantabetterbalanceiwantabetterbalanceiwantabetterbalance D: As I was saying, I know you want things to get towards total devotion, but the increase in civil unrest may be taking an emotional toll on your partner. Have you talked about that with him? B: Pardon me, but, I don't think it's THAT bad. D: Well, 25-75 isn't your perfect goal, and yet, the attempts on the lives of your fellow heroes must have led to so much anxiety.  B: No, no, that's not - D: But you did say he was willing to surrender if it came time to save you. I'm glad that he has made it known how much he loves you. B: Iwantabetterkingdomiwantabetterkingdomiwantabetterkingdom D: You're clearly using your abilities to influence what you can. I've been talking a lot here. Rather than creating more stress for yourself, let me know, what's your take on your husband's pushback? B: *semi-robotic* I want the kingdom to be better. *normal* I thought I made that clear with the spells and the talking and I really thought you would have picked up on this by now oh my gosh have I completely made things worse oh no oh no oh no not again… D: Well, I usually don't jump to this in a session, but your anxiety appears to be through the roof! Have you considered other forms of relaxation, or a discussion on possible medication management? B: Sorry, sorry, I just had a bit of a freakout there...we were talking about acceptable balance. I'm willing to work at it the slow...the NON MAGIC way. D: No problem. 76-24 is not the worst I've ever heard in terms of a ratio B: WHAT? D: Just a bit of humor on my end. Usually the reality is somewhere between your gut and your partner's thoughts. I'm in no position right now to tell what the number is. Only you know that. B: Oh, so the things you said before, with what I cast, and the responses after that, it wasn't so bad I didn't screw everything up there's still a chance oh my god this is amazing! D: You're...welcome? I must say, for someone who knows a lot about things I couldn't begin to understand, you sell yourself short with how much you have in your control. B: Maybe not as much as you think, doctor. D: Ok then, perhaps we'll discuss how much control you have over the situation in our next session. In the meantime, enjoy that makeup honeymoon that your constituents planned for you out of respect for your personal lives. B: Whoa...whoa...then it really made a difference? I did better? I...nevermind. You're right. Let's leave it at that. Iwanttogototeddyiwanttogototeddyiwanttogototeddy... Lisa from Comic Book Couples Counseling as Squirrel Girl) (50:38) DOC: Hello Squirrel Girl, I'm Dr. Issues.  SQUIRREL GIRL: Oh I know who you are. I have your trading card! D: What? SG: Oh, Deadpool came up with trading cards for all kinds of heroes, villains, and other associated characters. D: But I'm not a- SG: Now that I'm seeing you in person, though, I think the artist didn't capture your features well at all. D: I'm so confused… SG: Sorry, I know I'm throwing a lot at you. Let's start over. Hi, I'm Doree-uh, Squirrel Girl. D: I know your name, but we can go with Squirrel Girl if you'd like. SG: How'd you discover that? My totally secret identity is totally a secret. Unless… CAN YOU TALK TO SQUIRRELS TOO? D: No, can't say that I can. (Although I honestly haven't tried…) Anyway, I'm not supposed to be the focus of an encounter. How can I help you? SG: Can I get an autograph? D: *pause* You are really taking this trading card thing to heart, huh? SG: Is that a yes? D: Short answer, no. Longer answer, only if you actually discuss something that is worth being in a psychiatrist's office for besides giving off fangirl vibes. SG: Well, aren't you a party pooper! Ok then, help me deal with squirrels. D: I...uh...well, I would need to know a little about their...personalities? Is there some sort of baseline compatible with humans and the type of sentience I'd be used to? SG: They're way more capable of bridging the gap between humanity and squirreldom than you think! They can be as moody and petty and impulsive as anyone you've ever treated. I'm sure of that.  D: I usually see you pictured with one squirrel, though. Obviously you have favorites. Pets are certainly a part of the family. SG: Do you consider your child to be a pet, then? D: Well...no. I can see how my wording can make things sound awkward. I'm sure to make plenty of mistakes. SG: So that part of the card is true! D: *flustered* Does that card say anything GOOD about me?  SG: I thought you weren't going to talk about yourself. D: Only because you brought it up again! So...back to it. You're close to squirrels. How does that compare to humans around you?  SG: Not bad. Actually, I think I can relate to just about anything that wants to talk. D: That's wonderful! Do you have an example?  SG: I was nice to Galactus so he didn't eat the Earth. D: You...you saved all of us from something that could eradicate us with hunger, all by being nice to him? You shooed away an omnipotent being? You defeated multiple villains with an army of creatures the average person ignores or actively tries to avoid. Life...doesn't usually work out that way. SG: It does for me. Are you calling me a liar?  D: No! In fact, you may be the most honest patient I've had in a while. But that's not something I can help you improve. What's something that you consider to be a weakness? SG: Sometimes, I think I'm too nice. D: I've definitely heard that before. You don't want to give too much of yourself to others, and leave little time for yourself. What would you say is the ideal balance for you?  SG: Maybe stereotypical, but how about 50/50. D: 50/50...of what? There's more than 2 sides to a person's life.  SG: Not necessarily. Half for me, half for everyone else. D: *truly stunned* I mean, spiritual, physical, family and friends, vocational...you're telling me that it all comes down to 50/50? SG: Yup. Works for me. Works for my teammates. It probably doesn't work for enemies, but that's why I win! D: I don't want to lose track of you saying you're TOO nice. And yet, you're giving me an amazing, elegant schema for which you view life. What's off kilter? SG: I babysit too much. D: So...don't do it as much?  SG: *genuine surprise* Really? That makes so much sense! Then I would have more time to do other things! Wow. I needed to hear that. Thank you so much! D: *clearly thinks this is sarcasm* You don't have to bait me into thinking- SG: *interrupting* Sometimes it just takes a professional like you to remind a regular old superbeing like me about the little things. That intelligence rating on your card is spot on! D: Wait...what? I'm considered intelligent? At what rank? SG: Ooooh, nice try, but I learned my lesson. You don't want to talk about yourself or that silly card. D: But I thought you wanted me to sign it. SG: Hmm… I suppose it would add to the value. Although we don't have any way to verify the signature, and CGC is backed up like CRAZY these days… fine, here you go. D: *signing sound* And now that I have it, lemme take a look… A THREE?!?! THAT'S IT?!?! SG: It's out of 7, so it's not as bad as it sounds. D: YOU'RE NOT HELPING. SG:I'm only a three too. So is Captain America.  D: I'm...with...him...but he's the very essence of what a hero is supposed to be. I gushed to him...oops! SG: I KNEW IT! You're just like all of us, and yet, you still help everyone you see. We're not so different. D: Except you have squirrel powers. SG: Are you going to keep saying that? D: As long as you keep saying I'm just like you. SG: Then how can you bridge the gap between people who can't see the common stuff? D: *pause* You just summarized my whole life's goal to make sure I stayed on track. I'm dumbfounded. How about this: I try to understand more about critter characterization, and you...just keep being you, except stick to a basic question I can answer like before. SG: It's a deal! I'll bring Tippy-Toe along next time, and I'll translate for you. D: OK. So should I bring nuts for him- SG: Her. And we'll bring our own. She's very particular. No offense. D: Understood. We pick up our discussion of tantra by following it across the ocean from India to America. American tantra came to focus specifically on sex. It inspired the founders of the Ordo Templi Orientis, which would go on to become a home for Aleister Crowley, Pierre Bernard's various tantric yoga and healing orders and schools, and the Wiccan pioneers Gavin and Yvonne Frost. Tantra also became a direct import with Tibetan and Indian gurus fleeing oppression or prosecution to start over in America.

Intro Background (2:22) Let's talk supervillain parents. How do you go about modelling good behavior for your kids when your own behavior tends to lean towards world domination? Do you try and create a Little Lord of Destruction to follow in your footsteps and eventually take your place? Or did the parenthood switch actually flip and you're horrified at the thought of your kids taking after you, leading to you doing everything possible to try and break the cycle? And if it's the latter, how do you do it? Do you go the Tony Soprano route and just keep them far away from your activities and just give them the best life possible so that they'll never want for anything and never have to turn to crime? Oops, now they're spoiled brats who lack empathy and act hurtfully towards others without a second thought. Do you abandon the kid and stay far, far away from them so your corruptive influence will never touch them? Oops, growing up with an absent parent is actually a major contributor to a lot of social problems. Do you shield them and try to live a double life as a mundane workaday respectable person? OK...that's a major time bomb waiting to go off when they discover the truth. Or do you decide the kid's worth going straight for? Ahh...there's the rub. 1. The ones who want their kids to follow in their footsteps, actively groom them to do so, succeed at it, and feel no remorse about it. The one that springs to mind immediately is Senator Roark from Sin City. Evil, ruthless, cunning, and sadistic to the core, his boy Junior (That Yellow Bastard) is every bit of his father and then some. I'm sure there are others, but he's at the top of my list. (4:16) 2. The ones who want their kids to follow in their footsteps, but fail at it miserably for one reason or another, and the kids become heroes. How the parents feel about it varies; there are lots of examples, but my favorite is definitely Darkseid with Orion. Mortal enemies, destined to fight to the death and both very willing to do so, but buried in the subtext all those decades (and finally stated in Countdown to Final Crisis when Orion "kills" him) is that Darkseid is secretly very proud of what a fierce, bold, renowned warrior Orion has become, even if it's all being pitted against him. (8:30) 3. The "do as I say, not as I do" parents. These are ones who desperately want their kids to be good, but they're not willing to model good behavior themselves and give up their lives of crime. Most of the members of The Pride qualify -- I think Xavin's wanted him/her to eventually grow up and be a Skrull overlord, but for the most part, they just want their kids to have normal happy lives and go to great lengths to keep their supervillainy from them. (15:06) 4. The "give my kids everything they could want so that they won't need to be criminals" parents. Best example I can think of is definitely Tombstone. When he's not away in prison, he gives his daughter Janice everything. Spoils her rotten. Eventually gives her a first-class education at Columbia Law. She worships him and wants to be like him, but he's horrified that she would stoop to follow in his footsteps; he got her that law degree so she'd never have to. And besides, as he says, a lawyer's work is basically crime that you can't get arrested for. (And really, he's not wrong.) Of course, she becomes The Beetle. (22:26) 5. The ones that are horrified at the effects their villainy has on their kids, and desperately want to change and go straight. Easy example is The Lizard. Curt Connors became The Lizard almost entirely by accident, and devotes nearly every lucid moment alternating between trying to cure himself and mitigating the damage to his family that his episodes cause. And he either must be really really good at it or Martha and Billy Connors are saints for how much they put up with from him. Until Martha dies and Curt has to change Billy into a Lizard to cure him of the Carrion virus. #BecauseComics. (30:20) 6. The ones that unconditionally love their children whether they're allied with them, fighting against them, or don't want to have anything to do with them one way or the other. They'd do anything for them and fly to their side in their times of need no matter what. Hello, Magneto. That one's obvious. A slightly different dynamic would be Galactus with Silver Surfer. The arcs written in the last 20 years by JMS and Greg Pak have really showcased an entirely different dynamic between the two. Surfer will always be Galactus' creation and still finds himself at odds with him from time to time, but the two will help each other out if the other needs it at the drop of a hat. Surfer understands Galactus a lot better, and to the extent that Galactus as a cosmic entity is capable of such things, I think Surfer is clearly his favorite herald, and he has an infinite capacity for forgiveness no matter how many times he rebels. I liken them to a father and son where the son has grown into a mature adult himself. Even if they don't have a lot in common, they're always family, and they'll always have an unspoken bond. (38:48) Break (46:18) Plugs for BetterHelp, Ignorance Was Bliss, and Gail Simone Treatment (47:54) This isn't even one of those themes where I have to stretch it to find a real-world analogue. Lots of us were raised by parents who didn't model great behavior for us. Heck, in our generation, half of us grew up with broken homes, and a lot of those situations led to one parent being absent and barely raising us if at all. There have been libraries worth of sociological and macroeconomic studies that have detailed the effects. If you're a prospective new parent who's fortunate enough to be aware that you're a very flawed person who needs to avoid passing on your negative tendencies to your kids, how do you go about doing it?
