Full Hour | Dom Giordano, WPHT host and former teacher, has dedicated much of his daily show toward parents who are taking it into their own hands to push back against school boards that have a negative impact on their children. This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards. First ,Dom welcomes in Monique Hofkin, a member of the Central Bucks School District, on to discuss a complaint she filed for multiple anonymous parents with the U.S. Department of Education over a Spanish teacher for Central Bucks West who head's their Muslim Student Association. Hofkin tells us what concerned the parents, offering glimpses onto the teacher's social media postings which call, among other things, the death of Jews.  Then, Dom continues by welcoming Guy Ciarrocchi back on to discuss a piece he penned for Broad and Liberty concerning the teacher's union stranglehold on the debate over school choice. Giordano notes the thirst from voters on both sides of the aisle for the allowance to choose where to school their children, with Ciarrocchi explaining why Democratic politicians, even ones who campaign on school choice such as Josh Shapiro, never follow through on their promises.

The month of Ramadan is a time of prayer, charity and reflection for Maryland's many Muslim communities. Traditional observance sees daily fasting, prayer and an evening breaking of fast—a meal called iftar. Imam Yaseen Shaikh is Lead Resident Scholar and Head of Community Affairs at the Islamic Society of Baltimore. The ISB serves thousands of Muslims in the Baltimore area. Imam Shaikh often works as a bridge between Muslim families and school administrators to help ensure children receive the accommodations they need to learn. In Maryland universities and colleges, student are asking for an expansion of religious accommodations on campus. Student leaders of various faiths say the rules governing excused absences for religious observance are unclear and vary professor to professor. For Muslim students, Ramadan can be an especially challenging time as they juggle daily observance and fasting with class time and homework assignments. Hassan Ansari, president of the Muslim Student Association at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and Safiullah Rifai, president of the Muslim Student Association at the University of Maryland-College Park, join us to discuss working for better accommodations, and what its like to be religious among the increasingly non-religious student body.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Columbia Heights students mark World Hijab Day

Fifteen-year-old Rahma Mohamud is in the cafeteria of her high school in Columbia Heights. It's lunchtime, the room is full of classmates and it smells like the nachos that are being served for a meal. But Rahma isn't eating right now. She's standing in front of a table piled with colorful scarves. It's World Hijab Day, and Mohamud and her friends from her school's Muslim Student Association have set up a booth to give their non-hijab-wearing classmates a chance to ask questions.“I feel some of the students who don't wear it don't really know what it is. They just see it and I feel like they might have questions but may be too shy to come up without seeming ignorant,” Mohamud said. “Today is just a day where everybody can just learn what it is, get questions that might be uncomfortable to them out of the way and just bring our community closer.” Mohamud has been wearing a hijab since kindergarten. Today her hijab is black — her favorite color — and it's made out of jersey. It's just easy to throw on, she said, and she likes that it stays in place easier than chiffon. She's also wearing a black abaya — a full-length dress, which she also loves — it's an easy, instant outfit. Click here.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvjAgm8LYIMBut she wants her classmates to know how important the hijab is for her. “Hijab is something that's a choice. A lot of people when they talk about the hijab, they try to make it seem like it's something that's forced on Muslim women, but in reality, it's our own choice,” Mohamud said. “It's something that it might not be beautiful to some, but to us we feel like it's a beautiful choice to make and modesty is beautiful in our eyes.”While Mohamud is talking, a few students wander over from their tables to take a look at the booth. There's a mirror set up at the table and one of Mohamud's friends offers the girl, Lydia Kennedy, who's a senior, a chance to try a hijab on. “I guess it's World Hijab Day, so we came over to ask some questions — we were a little bit curious about the hijab,” Kennedy said. “I asked if there's a certain age you have to start wearing it, and they said, no, it can kind of be whenever you want.” The hijab booth was an idea thought up by members of Columbia Height's Muslim Student Association. Rehab Diriye, a senior, is the group's president. After the initial months of the pandemic, when she returned to in-person classes, she noticed her Muslim classmates were doing their daily prayers in random corners of the school. So she talked to other students and staff at the school, and she set up a prayer room, complete with rugs. “We just really wanted to unite the school and specifically the Muslim population and I think we accomplished that last year with events like a Ramadan event and culture night and we hope to continue that,” Diriye said.  This is the first year they've been able to put on the hijab day event. Diriye hopes she's able to communicate what it means to her to wear a hijab.“I love seeing other Muslim women and being identifiably Muslim. It's just a great feeling to say ‘Salaam Alaikum,' and then being able to recognize you as Muslim,” Diriye said. “Obviously there are downsides of that in terms of like, violence, thankfully I haven't been through any of those experiences.” Diriye said wearing a hijab is something that also has an effect on her Muslim friends. “I like making other Muslim women feel comfortable just by my presence and just because I wear hijab.”

In Season 9: Episode 8 of Beach Weekly, we are looking at the biggest headlines on the Long Beach State's and from around the world. The Muslim Student Association at Long Beach state is seeing growth in its membership, being just one example of how young American Muslims are one of the fastest growing populations in the U.S. However, leaders of the Muslim Student Association noted that despite the growth of their organization, they continue to feel judgement and discrimination from others. Former Daily Forty-Niner journalist, Pablo Unzueta, won a $90,000 settlement from the LA County Sheriff's Department last week. Unzueta filed the lawsuit in September 2020, after being arrested while photographing the protest of a Black man who was killed by Los Angeles law enforcement in August 2020. In the lawsuit, Unzueta accused LASD of illegal arrest, strip searching, illegal confiscation of property as well as an illegal search of his devices. The city of Long Beach's new Housing Element will be marketed to Long Beach State students, specifically with 13,000 apartment units designated as affordable housing. However, the Element has yet to announce a specific plan to support students. Currently, Long Beach State provides limited on- and off-campus housing options, but only enough to accommodate 1,372 of its almost 40,000 students. The family of Los Angeles Police Department officer Houston Tipping is claiming that he was targeted and killed after filing a report that accused four other officers of sexually assaulting a woman. Tipping died during a training exercise last spring, and LAPD's internal investigation ruled his death an accident. However, Tipping's family is claiming he was beaten and killed, and plans to sue LAPD. CA Governor Gavin Newsom signed an array of new bills into law last week, all of which will take effect on Jan. 1. The bills seek to protect reproductive rights, close the gender pay gap, combat climate change, address the state's housing crisis, and more. Elon Musk seems set to buy Twitter after all. After a back-and-forth series of legal proceedings between Musk and Twitter's executive board, Musk announced on Oct. 3 that he will buy the social network after previously going back on the deal. Apparently, any conversation about the incompatibility of Islamism with Americanism triggers Islamists. Dr. Jasser was vilified by the Duke Chronicle newspaper and the Muslim Student Association and its allies at the Duke Chronicle Newspaper and beyond without a single substantive argument or quotation and without yet having even spoken. Without a doubt young aspiring Islamists are threatened by leaders of the Muslim Reform Movement and what it means to their power. This week, Zuhdi also discusses Mustafa AKyol's piece in the New York Times about how Islamism drives Muslims away from Islam.. Last what is Islamic sharia-compliant financing?
