Interview with Seth Andrews. He runs "The Thinking Atheist" YouTube, website and Podcast. We discuss current events and solve all of the worlds problems.Special Market Adjustment. Check with your tax professional and/ or advisor before taking any action. This is not specific investment advice.
We listen to Seth Andrews, host of “The Thinking Atheist” podcast, read Dan Barker's article “The Top 10 Absolute Worst Old Testament Verses.” Then, we hear Washington Post columnist Kate Cohen's entertaining and thought-provoking speech at FFRF's 2024 convention called “Tampon Tim and the Long Reach of Religion.”
Last month, David and Christina attended the annual Secular Student Alliance conference, held this year in sweltering Little Rock, Arkansas. It's a gathering of college students from campuses around the country seeking community and inspiration. That opportunity is especially important at a time when, being reason-based, one feels increasingly outnumbered. They presented our “So You Want to Be An Organizer” workshop and conducted a series of run-and-gun interviews, collaring speakers like author Anne Nelson and "The Thinking Atheist" Seth Andrews, as well as student attendees. What you'll hear from the students may disturb you. The students they spoke with are struggling, trying to calibrate their own moral compasses in a world where morality seems to shift with the tide. What to make of a world where pious churchgoers worship the anti-Christ, where the "good guy" signs off on arms in support of genocide, and where so many of the lessons they learned in American history class turned out to be deeply biased at best, or just wrong? You may agree or disagree with what you'll hear, but attention must be paid. Because their vote – or non-vote – may be the difference between keeping our democracy and the end of the American experiment. Thanks for listening! Now follow us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Threads. And please consider becoming a Patreon supporter at www.patreon.com/podcastunreasonable. It's a small price to pay to help keep America from becoming a theocracy, dontchya think?

This week on RfRx, Rob Palmer returns to discuss mass psychogenic illness. Have U.S. government employees in Havana and all around the world – even behind the White House gates – been attacked and injured over the past seven years by secret energy-weapons wielded by undiscovered assailants for political reasons? Have thousands of girls in their schools across Iran been poisoned this past year by their Islamic government as retribution for the mass anti-hijab protests? Did a 4-ft tall roller-skating Monkey Man with metal claws and glowing red eyes attack people throughout New Delhi causing injuries and deaths? Believe it or not, there is a connection between these seemingly unrelated headline-grabbing events. This presentation will examine a little recognized and less understood phenomenon that is likely the actual culprit in these and a myriad of similar events that have occurred throughout the world and throughout human history: Mass Psychogenic Illness.Rob Palmer is a retired aerospace engineer. He has been a spacecraft designer, spacecraft tester, computer programmer, and software systems engineer. Rob became a skeptical activist in 2016 upon joining the Guerrilla Skeptics on Wikipedia team, and in 2018 became a columnist for Skeptical Inquirer. To date he has had over 70 articles published by Skeptical Inquirer as well as in other publications, and the Wikipedia articles he's written have garnered over 13 million pageviews.Rob writes about contemporary skeptical issues, and has interviewed individuals as diverse as Neil deGrasse Tyson, Richard Dawkins, Penn Jillette, Ann Druyan (producer and writer for the modern Cosmos series), Dave Warnock (Of Dying Out Loud), Seth Andrews (host of The Thinking Atheist podcast), John de Lancie (Star Trek's Q), and even God - eh, Mr. Deity - himself. Rob is registered with the Center for Inquiry's Speakers Bureau, and has given presentations for various skeptic and humanist groups and conventions, including: We Can Reason, Dragon Con, and three times at CSICon (the annual science and skepticism conference in Las Vegas). He has been interviewed about these subjects on various podcasts and YouTube shows, including The Skeptic Zone, Big Picture Science, Be Rationable, The Phil Ferguson Show, Banachek's Brain, 502 Conversations, Point of Inquiry, The Thinking Atheist, and here for RfRx.All of Rob's skeptical work can be found at: https://linktr.ee/thewellknownskeptic. In today's episode of the Atheist Experience, Secular Rarity(SR) and Seth Andrews, The Thinking Atheist, wrestle with the foreshadow of Jesus. Christina in Canada calls to inform us that it is humans that are poisoning the earth, not god. What does people not being interested in saving the planet have to do with there being a god? If Allah speaks to you in your dreams, why do you read the prophecies of the Bible and not the Quran? Tethering these things to the real world is the concern. Nikol in Armenia says that if we don't believe in god, we would live better in this world than others rather than pretend we can help others. The less religious nations are the more peaceful and produce a better living. The changing of our scientific positions is a feature, not a bug. How does god allow all kinds of bad stuff if he is all knowing and all good? The belief in a divine essence produces all kinds of problems that a secular morality does not have. If you stopped believing in a deity today, why and how would you suddenly become more selfish? James in CA describes circumcision as a foreshadow to the blood sacrifice Jesus made. Why does circumcision need to be the penis? What does our immorality have to do with this practice? Why is self mutilation as a reminder that we are not able to meet up to god's standards not a problem? Even 2,000 years ago, we would not just walk up to someone and ask to see the penis so we could cut off the tip, unless of course we had a need of 100 Philistine foreskins. Jimmy in Texas thinks that an atheist view of god is naive and asks the hosts about what their conception of god is. SR does not have a conception of god, but uses the callers' conception of god for discussion. Seth explains how the argument for any kind of benevolent god falls apart. If a benevolent and omniscient god wanted to have a relationship with us, why would he not intervene and prove himself to us? Would it make sense for a loving parent to be confusing on purpose when clarity is the goal? Why does god need Jimmy to do the heavy lifting by calling a show? Presumptively crawling into our skulls does not mean you know our view or experience. Harvey in Canada asks why the hosts are convinced there is not a god. Which god are you talking about? If we are not really delving into what god is, we have not moved the needle with being convinced. Keep asking questions and being honest with yourself on your journey. If you find something concrete, have your people call our people. Jon in Canada asks what the worst part of Christianity is. Seth answers with a list of awful things and most offensive being how Christianity sells itself as a love relationship when it is in actuality abusive at its core. SR says that at best, there is no methodology for knowing what is true, and the existing method used is what has led to the worst experiences we have had. James in Ca asks if we can demonstrate morality. The question is ridiculous, offensive and lazy. Do we need to be told not to harm in order to know the difference? Thank you for tuning in this week. Question of the week is: What would you give Jesus for his birthday?
How original sin best explains the human condition
A prominent atheist philosopher says original sin is the faith's strongest argument
In this episode, Phil and Susie wrap up the season with another Ask Us Anything session. We are excited to have a guest cohost, Arline from the Graceful Atheist Podcast!! We really had a blast with Arline and are so honored that she spent some time with us. Her insights and answers to your questions are just fantastic!! We received a lot of great questions, which are listed below with timestamps: 8:40: Can you help me understand what the apologists think about verses such as “Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks?” And other garbage things? How do you not get bitter and angry as you deconstruct? 18:45: What seemingly-trivial ways have you reclaimed your identity that was suppressed as a Christian? Examples: watching R-rated movies, swearing, celebrating Halloween, wearing bikinis, doing things just because you like doing them, etc? 24:13: I would love to hear about books you recommend on the subject of dealing with leftover fear of hell. Also, which of the sects would you consider most insidious, and which, in your opinion, is more insidious than the majority of people realize? 30:11: My question is how to cope with stress after leaving religion? A lot of people pray when things are going bad because they feel that faith will relieve stress. I think it would be good if you shared strategies for dealing with emotions like fear and anxiety without religion. 37:04: Why or what caused you to change your beliefs? How was the transition? (how long it took, how it felt during & how it impacted those close to you). If you experienced trauma due to religion, how that experience impacted your life at the time of impact up to present life. Coping mechanisms for dealing with ptsd. Why or what caused you to change your beliefs? How was the transition? (how long it took, how it felt during & how it impacted those close to you). If you experienced trauma due to religion, how that experience impacted your life at the time of impact up to present life. Coping mechanisms for dealing with PTSD. 48:20: How do you find solace in death without belief in an afterlife? (If you do find any sort of comfort regarding that! It's one of the biggest reasons I turned to religion for a long time.) 53:36: How or should you even come out to family and friends and if you do, how do you navigate the experience and keep your sanity? I live in a small Texas town which should say it all. I am also a small business owner which compounds my angst about this topic. 59.16: Why are women "second class" and why do they accept that? The whole serve your master, obey your husband is swallowed by so many SMART women. Religion is just so highly macho and being told from birth that you are there to serve must be so hard to recover from. For those who managed to escape, when was the seed planted that women are people too and what was the last straw that allowed them to get out? 1:09: Given that evidence suggests humans have no soul and therefore no free will, how should we change the way we treat others or hold them responsible for the harm they do? This week on RfRx, Rob Palmer will be joining us to discuss psychic predictions. In 2021, The Skeptic Zone producer and CSI Fellow Richard Saunders completed his 12-year project dubbed the Great Australian Psychic Prediction Project (GAPPP) – an analysis of almost 4,000 published paranormal predictions made by over 200 people claiming paranormal powers in Australia. The scoring of the predictions was performed by an international team of volunteers of which Rob was a member. In this presentation, an expanded version of the talk to be given at CSICon 2022 in a few weeks, Rob will share details and the results of this unique investigation into the precision (or lack thereof) of the published predictions of prominent, public, paranormal practitioners. Rob Palmer has had a diverse career in engineering, having worked as a spacecraft designer, computer programmer, and software systems engineer. He began writing for Skeptical Inquirer in 2018, and to date has had 60 articles published by Skeptical Inquirer and other skeptic media (on three continents!). Rob writes about contemporary skeptical issues, and for his column he has interviewed individuals as diverse as astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller), John de Lancie (Star Trek's Q!), Thomas Westbrook (Holy Koolaid), Drew McCoy (The Genetically Modified Skeptic), and Seth Andrews. Rob is also a public speaker and has given talks for various skeptic and humanist groups, (including RfR). He has been a speaker at Dragon Con, and twice (so far) at CSICon, the annual conference of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. He has also been interviewed about his work on various podcasts and YouTube shows, including The Skeptic Zone, Big Picture Science, Banachek's Brain, and The Thinking Atheist. This repeat theist caller picked the wrong day to call in, because a sleep-deprived Eric is an Eric with little patience for bullshit. Yes, it's frustrating to listen to the smugness, but stick around to the end and listen to the sweet sound of that mic drop. We're done here. 1:08:40If you are a fan of mythological beasts of any sort, you are probably going to enjoy this call a lot. We discuss the Not Deer, wendigos, Nessie, and a whole host of other paranormal creatures, including where the legends come from. What is your favorite cryptid, and do you know its origin story? 1:17:51Eric consoles a caller who has recently deconverted and is going through a time of grief without the comfort of a god to lean on. They discuss heartbreak, soul mates, and how to use skepticism not as a tool of nihilism but as a way to move forward and create meaning and hope in the future. Get out your tissues for this one! 1:27:09Rarely have we seen Eric get so mad. We almost made it this week without a horrible, bigoted call from a Christian nationalist, but it wasn't meant to be. Jon, if you're reading this, please never call in again. We don't like you. Meet Seth Andrews, a former Christian broadcaster and believer of 30 years who escaped the bonds of fundamentalism to become one of the leading voices for atheism and free thought. His podcast The Thinking Atheist, is one of the most popular atheist communities on the internet, offering a relaxed environment and a rage-free challenge to the religious beliefs that defined his youth.Firmy rooted in his faith (and with a perfect radio voice), Seth hosted a show on Christian radio from 1990 to 2000. But a series of personal and political events triggered his doubts about Christian doctrine, and in 2004, after watching a video of atheist Christopher Hitchens debating Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, Seth decided to leave his religion.Finding no community of other atheists in his area, he decided to build an atheist community online. He created a website and Facebook page, both called The Thinking Atheist, to connect with other non-believers online. Find Seth here: TwitterThe Thinking AtheistFacebookSeth's new book! Timmy had the honor of having Seth Andrews back on the podcast for an exciting conversation about how people come to believe what they believe, like Conspiracy Theories. Seth is an American activist, author, and speaker on the subject of atheism. He is the creator and host of The Thinking Atheist online community, podcast, and YouTube channel, as well as the author of four self-published books and a new book coming in April of 2022. Over the past several decades there has been a rise of Christian Nationalism in the United States. In this RfRx discussion, Seth will discuss the power that the Christian Nationalist movement currently wields, and how they use it. He will be exploring the way this ideology has been sold to the masses and injected into government, despite church state separation. There is a privilege to this movement that makes it unique. Christian Nationalists wield money, power, and a belief that they are the chosen ones. Seth will shed light on this privileged position and highlight how fear of the “other” is used both as a motivator and a selling point to forward the Christian Nationalists' cause as their numbers are dwindling and the secular population is growing. Seth Andrews, a video producer and former Christian broadcaster, now hosts The Thinking Atheist, one of the most popular online atheist communities and podcasts in the world. The Thinking Atheist is not a person, it's an icon encouraging all to reject faith and pursue reason and evidence. Seth has authored several books: "Deconverted," "Sacred Cows," "Ghost Stories," and "Confessions of a Former Fox News Christian". He also hosts The Thinking Atheist podcast on Spreaker, a broadcast that has been downloaded over 50 million times since its launch in 2010. In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray chat with classically trained music composer, Douglas Helvering. We start with a look back and Doug's draw to music. He was first pulled in via a choir and became mesmerized with learning more about music and composition. As a PhD professor of music, Doug has spent most of his adult life analyzing and teaching others how to understand music theory. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, he was forced to reevaluate how to reach others while in lockdown. After awhile, he returned to his YouTube channel, commenting on news and thoughts of the day. In the fall of 2020, it was Doug's brother who suggested Doug try a reaction episode. Doug was not really ready for a clash of music genres, but his brother suggested giving an analysis of the Iron Maiden song, "Fear of the Dark." It was a huge hit with YouTube watchers. Within weeks, he gained thousands of subscribers. With a newfound purpose of teaching principles of music theory over top of metal and hard rock pieces, Doug has grown to over 70,000 followers at the time of this recording. Doug truly teaches us what is happening compositionally in the music and how it moves through chords, keys and even lyrics. In some ways, the watcher is getting the benefit of a classical education leveraged on elements of metal and rock. As the episode wraps up the interview, Alan pulls executive privilege and bypasses the normal review of a horrible movie. Instead, they all talk about some of their favorite war films in honor of Memorial Day. After the films, Alan and Walt each provide a pair of odd news items. Then they move into the Entertainment Segment. WATCHING Walt is watching the Robert Kirkman animated series, Invincible. He also re-watched the 70's film, The Towering Inferno. Finally, he just watched the classic 80s flick, War Games. Doug gave two thumbs up for, Mare of Easttown. He also recently watched Real Genius, Schitt's Creek, The Good Place and Hamiliton. Alan also finished Mare of Easttown and gives it a glowing review. Alan re-watched Togo with his Father-in-Law and that led to watching, Iron Will. Alan also gaves two thumbs up for Guns Akimbo starring Daniel Radcliffe. Finally, in honor of its release on May 25, 1977, Alan re-watched Star Wars with his wife and Father-in-Law. READING Walt is reading, "Gun Room, " by Warren Ellis. Alan, in preparation for an upcoming interview on The Marriage Fit Podcast, is reading, "The 4 Intimacy Styles." Doug is getting ready to read, "Zero Fail: The Rise and Fall of the Secret Service," by Carol Leonning. LISTENING Walt plugs the podcast, Radio Labyrinth and Small Town Murder. He also reminds everyone that Old Sea Brigade has a new album out. And, Walt just got tickets to see Dead and Company in Atlanta later this fall. Alan does a shout out to the 60MW Podcast, Measuring the Score podcast, The Daily Doug on YouTube and the new age group, 2002. Doug has been listening to Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers. He recently did an episode on Queen's, "The March of the Black Queen." He has also been listening to the music of Stargazer and Dio. As to radio, he likes to listen to Mike Smerkonish on SirusXM. He also likes the podcasts, Wait, wait! Don't Tell Me and, The Thinking Atheist. Make sure you have subscribed to The Wilder Ride on your pod-catcher of choice so you will not miss a single episode! You know Seth Andrews as the host of The Thinking Atheist podcast and his YouTube videos. And if you've listened to him before, you may also know that he's a former evangelical Christian, the kind who lived in the right-wing bubble, idolizing Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and FOX News. So what caused that shift? That's the focus of Seth's new book, "Confessions of a Former Fox News Christian." We spoke about how Seth left the evangelical bubble, what it takes to question your core beliefs, and why the FOX News crowd is so susceptible to fear.

Our guest this evening is Seth Andrews, aka The Thinking Atheist. A former Christian music DJ, apostate Seth has written two books Deconverted and Sacred Cows, and continues to have an impact on new nonbelievers. He joins us to discuss a variety of topics.
Seth Andrews is the host of The Thinking Atheist, one of the top atheist podcasts in the world which has inspired countless rationalists across the globe. Recently, Seth agreed to speak at a conference featuring a controversial YouTuber. As a result, he was attacked by the rabid far-left. When he withdrew from the event after watching one of the YouTuber's racist videos, he was attacked by the rabid far-right. Is there a dark side to the modern atheist movement? Should he have just spoken anyway? Was he right to request that this speaker be removed? How should the rest of us navigate these issues? Seth joins us—and doesn't hold back. Listen to our conversation. Special Guest: Seth Andrews from The Thinking Atheist A big thanks to Elvis for creating the song that starts this episode! Listener Submissions: Alex Jones is really a Super Saiyan: Ever want to own a bunch of absurdly creepy wax Amish children? Well now you can:
In this episode, Bo Bennett speaks with author Seth Andrews about his latest book Sacred Cows: A Lighthearted Look at Belief and Tradition Around the World. “[I]nto the 21st century, our species continues to participate in beliefs and customs that seem more suited to the Bronze Age than the Information Age, some of which involve poisonous snakes, holy smoke, urine bubbles, crystals, tarot cards, aliens, costumed virgins and, of course, an offering plate.” A Christian of 30 years and former religious broadcaster, Seth Andrews ultimately found himself dissatisfied with the explanations and doctrines of scripture and the church. His search for answers let him to reject, completely, Christianity and all other religions, and Seth now hosts one of the largest online atheist communities in the world, The Thinking Atheist. His "everyman" approach and skills as a broadcaster and video producer have brought, literally, millions into the conversation regarding religious beliefs and the benefits/damage they do in the name of their respective deities, especially in regard to the indoctrination of children. The Thinking Atheist is on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and BlogTalkRadio.
