How do we make space for the curious child? In a society where we are eroding subjects such as music, art and dance from the curriculum, where knowledge and achievement are valued above play and creativity, how do we encourage curiosity in children and allow it to thrive inside and outside the classroom?Ross Borthwick, Isabel Rich and David Marshall approach the question of curiosity in Episode 5 of Season 3 with...well, curiosity. It's something all schools want to promote - or say they want to promote - but what exactly is it, and how do we keep the spark alive in the children we teach, particularly in an age of instant access knowledge?Episode Links & Other Things Article from The Atlantic: How the Ivy League Broke America, a thought-provoking look at the way exclusivity in education has increased the divide in the States. Post-WWII Singapore was a time that was loaded with historical events that shaped how matters would unfold throughout the 1950s and into the 1960s. The matter of how to handle the future of Malaya and Singapore begins to be seriously discussed and hotly debated. To showcase what the British and political leaders in Malaya and Singapore were up against, we'll first review the events of the 1950 Maria Hertogh case and the disturbances that followed. In this episode we'll begin to explore the early life of the most consequential leader in Singapore's history and in the greater Southeast Asian scene, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. His early life, including his marriage to Mrs. Kwa Geok Choo, will be introduced. In the early 1950s, Mr. and Mrs. Lee returned from the UK and began their law careers. This led directly to Lee Kuan Yew's involvement in local Singaporean politics and the later founding, in 1954, of the PAP (People's Action Party). The elections of 1948, 1955, and 1959 will also be presented and how the results shaped the future of Singapore politics. Events will unfold that will contribute to Lee Kuan Yew's rise as the leading voice in Singapore's politics and independence. Other major figures from this time will also be introduced such as David Marshall, Lim Yew Hock, Lim Chin Siong, Fong, Swee Suan, and Ong Eng Guan. We'll close with Tunku Abdul Rahman's May 1961 "Grand Design" speech and how this became a game changer as far as how to handle the potential merger of Malaya and Singapore. This will all be introduced next time in Part 8. Thanks to all of you who have kindly supported me by signing up for my Patreon. All ten episodes are already available there. The noun translates as 'racecourse' an apt metaphor for all the things curriculum has come to mean for schools today.Early in this episode, the idea of a road map is mentioned as another metaphor for a curriculum, something which can both define and limit what a it is and can be. Grey Power is calling for a change in elderly driver assessments, claiming the current process penalises licence holders in most need. The SIMARD-MD and Mini-ACE are cognitive tests designed to identify drivers at risk, but these tests have faced criticism for not accounting for driving ability. Grey Power vice president David Marshall says people have labelled these tests 'demeaning'. "A vast majority of the patients aren't at that stage, so they go through the stress of these tests - and then they can forget and fail and then have to be sent on for additional testing." Grey Power is calling for a change to elderly driver assessments, claiming the process for assessing driver capability is penalising some of the very people who need their licences the most. Grey Power acting vice president David Marshall says a nationwide survey of members has revealed a lack of practical driving assessors in the regions and also widespread use of cognitive tests - SIMARD-MD and Mini-ACE - to assess driver impairment. Canadian driving researcher Dr Alexander Crizzle, says there is no evidence to support the continued use of cognitive dementia tests to assess driver capability. In New Zealand, the driver licence renewal criteria require all licence holders to present a medical certificate confirming fitness to drive at age 75, then 80, and then every two years following. Waka Kotahi NZTA says it does not mandate cognitive tests for elderly drivers and maintains the use of such tools is left to the discretion of health practitioners. Draft guidelines on how to assess medical fitness to drive are currently under review and are expected to be released in June.
Considered by many to be the first Mountain Man, John Colter first came west with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. When they head back to civilization, Colter instead chooses to stay behind. He'd live with the Crow tribe and go on to be the first American to cast eyes on the Teton Mountains, Colter's Hell, and what's now known as Yellowstone National Park. Later, as a fur trapper, Colter would survive numerous close calls with the Blackfeet. At one point, he'd be stripped naked and forced to run for his life. What was Colter's early life like? Was he really a Ranger under Simon Kenton? And how would Colter finally die? The Precious and Life-giving Cross of Christ Theodore of Studium (759-826) How precious the gift of the cross, how splendid to contemplate! In the cross there is no mingling of good and evil, as in the tree of paradise: it is wholly beautiful to behold and good to taste. The fruit of this tree is not death but life, not darkness but light. This tree does not cast us out of paradise, but opens the way for our return. This was the tree on which Christ, like a king on a chariot, destroyed the devil, the Lord of death, and freed the human race from his tyranny. This was the tree upon which the Lord, like a brave warrior wounded in his hands, feet and side, healed the wounds of sin that the evil serpent had inflicted on our nature. A tree once caused our death, but now a tree brings life. Once deceived by a tree, we have now repelled the cunning serpent by a tree. What an astonishing transformation! That death should become life, that decay should become immortality, that shame should become glory! Well might the holy Apostle exclaim: Far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world! The supreme wisdom that flowered on the cross has shown the folly of worldly wisdom's pride. The knowledge of all good, which is the fruit of the cross, has cut away the shoots of wickedness. The wonders accomplished through this tree were foreshadowed clearly even by the mere types and figures that existed in the past. Meditate on these, if you are eager to learn. Was it not the wood of a tree that enabled Noah, at God's command, to escape the destruction of the flood together with his sons, his wife, his sons' wives and every kind of animal? And surely the rod of Moses prefigured the cross when it changed water into blood, swallowed up the false serpents of Pharaoh's magicians, divided the sea at one stroke and then restored the waters to their normal course, drowning the enemy and saving God's own people? Aaron's rod, which blossomed in one day in proof of his true priesthood, was another figure of the cross, and did not Abraham foreshadow the cross when he bound his son Isaac and placed him on the pile of wood? By the cross death was slain and Adam was restored to life. The cross is the glory of all the apostles, the crown of the martyrs, the sanctification of the saints. By the cross we put on Christ and cast aside our former self. By the cross we, the sheep of Christ, have been gathered into one flock, destined for the sheepfolds of heaven. Theodore the Studite (also known as Theodorus Studita, St. Theodore of Stoudios, and St. Theodore of Studium; 759–826) was a Byzantine Greek monk and abbot of the Stoudios monastery in Constantinople, founded in 462 or 463 by the consul Studios (Studius), a Roman who had settled in Constantinople, and was dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Theodore's letter, containing suggested monastery reform rules, is the first recorded stand against slavery. He played a major role in the revivals both of Byzantine monasticism and of classical literary genres in Byzantium. He is known as a zealous opponent of iconoclasm, one of several conflicts that set him at odds with both emperor and patriarch. After his death the Studios monastery continued to be a vital center for Byzantine hymnography and hagiography, as well as for the copying of manuscripts.

We share tips on how to manage your cull cows and bulls to maximize your dollars. Cultivated and lab grown meat hit the news as more and more states push to shut down the selling of lab grown meat. We have market reports, news you need to hear, horse sale updates and lots more all wrapped into this episode of The Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. EPISODE 173 DETAILS Up to 20 percent of a producer's income can come from the marketing of cull cows and bulls. But we need to manage them a certain way to maximize the profit potential, especially with markets being as high as they are. Michaela Clowser, The Director of Producer Education from the National Cattlemen's Beef Association joins us to introduce the Right Way, Right Time program. Alabama has become the latest U.S. state to take legislative action against cultivated meat, with the Senate passing a bill to ban these proteins. The bill will now move to the House of Representatives, where it could become law. Many other states are trying to pass such legislation. Meat sales have been strong thus far in 2024 as beef margins shrink for the packer. We have all the details. RIGHT WAY, RIGHT TIME For cattle producers across the country, whether beef or dairy, cull cattle are part of doing business. Animals age, they no longer breed back, and their health deteriorates. Incorporating culling decision guidelines into an operation's best management practices benefits both animal welfare as well as the producer's bottom line. Animal well-being must be considered in every decision made throughout the animal's life. Cull cattle, while being removed from the herd, are an untapped market for producers. It's estimated that sales of market cows and bulls contribute up to 20% of operational gross revenue for beef operations.1 According to Derrell Peel with Oklahoma State University, “It is possible to increase the value of cull cows by 25 to 45 percent or more by improving cull cow management and marketing.” According to the 2022 National Beef Quality Audit (NBQA), the market cow and bull sector provides an alternative product and a secondary value to animals once their original purpose is no longer suitable. When it comes to product fabrication, market cows and bulls are typically associated with ground beef production. However, over time, the industry has realized that some market cows and bulls have the potential to yield valuable primals to be fabricated and sold as retail cuts and to the restaurant trade. Even though cull animals are often viewed as a loss, with effective planning, these animals can be a significant source of revenue and should not be overlooked. In essence, cull cattle are market cattle. This document addresses key problem areas, provides strategies for making timely culling decisions, and is designed to help producers examine the opportunity to capture more value through effective management regarding cull cattle. COW COUNTRY NEWS Alabama has become the latest US state to take legislative action against cultivated meat, with the Senate passing a bill to ban these proteins. The bill will now move to the House of Representatives, where it could become law. Senators in Alabama have passed a bill to ban cultivated meat from being sold. Sponsored by Senator Jack Williams, Senate Bill 23 makes it a Class C felony to manufacture, sell or distribute cultivated meat in the southern state. If you're the owner of a restaurant hoping to offer cultivated meat to patrons, you could be convicted and your establishment could have its food safety permit suspended or even revoked. Alabama is far from the only state hoping to limit the cultivated meat sector. Florida has introduced two bills hoping to ban the production, sale, holding and distribution of cultured meat within the state. One of them suggests imposing criminal penalties – including facing misdemeanors of the second degree, fines of $500 to $1,000, and license suspensions or stop-sale orders – on anyone violating these rules. In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill requiring clear labelling of plant-based and cultivated meat, seafood and egg products, while Nebraska's Real MEAT Act would mandate the word “imitation” on alternative protein if passed. Policymakers in Tennessee are making their case for a $1M fine as part of its proposal to outlaw cultured meat. An Arizona House representative drafted HB 2244, a bill that would make it illegal to “intentionally misbranded or misrepresent” an alternative meat product as meat, while David Marshall went a step further with HB 2121, attempting to ban the sale or production of cultured meat. On similar grounds, Wisconsin State Assembly representative Peter Schmidt proposed two bills against alternative protein, one of which put restrictions on the labelling of cultivated meat. In Iowa, a state senate subcommittee unanimously advanced a bill that would require labels on what the proposal calls “manufactured meat” to outline the sources of the products. Just last month, senators Mike Rounds and Jon Tester proposed a federal bill to ban these proteins in school meals. Strong Start To The Year For Meat Sales In January 2024, beleaguered consumers received some good news with the USDA predicting a slight reduction in grocery prices in 2024. Additionally, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization announced that its food price index is at the lowest level in three years. However, rising labor and other operational costs have been eroding margins and the USDA expects restaurant prices to continue their fourth-quarter increase in 2024. January restaurant engagement was flat, with 80% of consumers having dined at restaurants or ordered takeout or delivery, according to the Circana survey of primary grocery shoppers. The home-cooked share of meals also continued to average around 78% to 80% for most households. When shopping for groceries, the survey found that 81% of consumers applied one or more money-saving measures in January, led by looking for sales promotions (53% of households), cutting back on non-essentials (40%) and looking for coupons (33%). Beef Margins Shrink For Packers Beef and pork packer margins have been seeing a decline as of late. Beef packers experienced a decline in margins by as much as $49 per head, resulting in a loss of as much as $70 per head. Annual projections for 2024 show an improvement in packer margins compared to the current week, with indications of a slightly better outlook for packers in the long term. The co-authors of the book 'Lessons of the Pandemic' discuss their research process, motivations, and recommendations for education. They emphasize the importance of teacher voice and perspective, as well as the need for a blended research approach using surveys, interviews, and focus groups. The chapters cover topics such as teacher workload, continuous innovation, recognizing teacher efforts, and the impact of social emotional learning on student well-being. The authors also provide advice for educators interested in conducting research and highlight the benefits of collaboration. Takeaways Teacher voice and perspective are crucial in understanding the experiences and needs of educators. A blended research approach, including surveys, interviews, and focus groups, provides a comprehensive understanding of the education landscape. School leaders should consider the impact of teacher workload and prioritize protecting planning time and limiting unnecessary meetings. Continuous innovation is essential in education, and educators should be open to change while school leaders should ensure changes are effective and supported by teachers. Teachers' efforts during the pandemic should be recognized and celebrated, and the lessons learned should be acknowledged and applied in future crises. David Marshall is an associate professor of educational research in the College of Education at Auburn University. Since 2020, much of his research on the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on K-12 education. Dr. Marshall has edited two books on the topic including "COVID-19 and the Classroom: How Schools Navigated the Great Disruption," one of the first books to share social science research documenting the first 15 months of the crisis. His research interests also include school choice and charter schools. Dr. Marshall's work has been published in leading journals of education research, policy, and practice. He taught middle and high school social studies in Philadelphia. Dr. Marshall worked for the Richmond Teacher Residency program in Richmond, Virginia in several capacities over a six-year span. He recently served two terms as chair of the Alabama Public Charter School Commission. Tim Pressley is an associate professor of psychology at Christopher Newport University, where he is also a faculty member in the Master of Arts in Teaching program and the Center for Education Research and Policy. Before receiving his doctorate, Dr. Pressley was an elementary school teacher in Fort Worth, Texas. Currently his research focuses on teachers' lives, specifically on the impact COVID-19 has had on teachers, teacher effectiveness, and teacher burnout. His work has been published in leading education journals. Dr. Pressley is co-author of "Reading Instruction That Works (5th edition)". Giving teachers a voice on issues affecting their lives has been a driving force behind his research. COW COUNTRY NEWS Cultivated Meat Law Passes Arizona House Committee According to Meating Place, The Arizona House Committee on Land, Agriculture and Rural Affairs voted in favor of House Bill 2244, which would make it illegal to label a product that is not derived from livestock or poultry as “meat.” The 6-3 vote was championed by Rep. Quang Nguyen, who says the FDA's labeling requirements for cultivated meat are "not enough" to prevent consumer confusion. A second Arizona House bill, proposed by Rep. David Marshall, was set to be discussed on Monday, but Rep. Marshall withdrew the measure from consideration while he worked on amendments. That bill would institute a total ban on production and sale of cultivated meat in the state. House Bill 2244 will now be brought before the entire House for approval. Cultivated Meat Flagged As Threat To Genetic IP Meating Place says that although animal proteins cultivated outside the animal itself are far from being readily available to consumers, players in the animal ag industry are looking at the horizon and see a potential threat to the decades of investment in improved livestock genetics. “What can potentially happen is [cultivated meat] companies can isolate cell lines from animals, which they then will use to grow their lab-grown meat products and basically piggyback on all of the work that these seedstock producers have done,” said Michael Gonda, livestock genetics professor at South Dakota State University, in an interview with AgWeek. As yet, no mechanism has been drawn up for compensating producers for the investment in their genetic lines. “All these companies need is a handful of animals to collect these cell lines from and so there are not a lot of protections there for [the] producers,” Gonda said. “It's probably two, three, four years down the road, but the rules need to be made now because if we wait that long, we are already going to be behind,” Todd Wilkinson, president of National Cattlemen's Beef Association and cattle producer from De Smet, S.D., told AgWeek. EPISODE 12 DETAILS We wrap up this week by heading to the news. It's Fake Meat Laws from Arizona to the latest propaganda on Netflix. ARIZONA MAY JOIN ITALY BY BANNING LAB GROWN MEAT FROM THE STATE According to Food Safety News, Arizona State Rep. David Marshall, R-Snowflake, and four co-sponsors have introduced House Bill 2121, prohibiting cell-cultured animal products. HB2121 prohibits anyone in Arizona from offering to sell or produce a cell-cultured animal product for human consumption. The state is authorized to impose a civil penalty on violators of not more than $25,000 in addition to attorney fees and costs with total actual damages not to exceed $100,000. Further, bill BB2121 allows a “person or organization whose business is adversely affected by a violation” to file a civil action for declaratory and injunctive relief and actual damages “against the person that violates this section.” The bill defines “cell-cultured animal products” as “any cultured animal tissue produced from in vitro animal cell cultures outside of the organism from which it is derived.” Read the entire article HERE NETFLIX FEEDS VIEWERS WITH VEGAN PROPAGANDA IN NEW SERIES SeaWest News reports a new Netflix series released New Year's Day 2024 titled “You Are What You Eat: The Twin Experiment” follows the recent trend of documentaries and reality TV shows that push aside medical health experts and balanced discussion in favour of an agenda-driven campaign to help persuade viewers to adopt a vegan lifestyle. While promoted as a show offering science-based nutritional advice based on a clinical trial that compared the health of identical twins fed a vegan versus omnivore diet, the opening 30 seconds of the new Netflix series should be cause for concern, given its disclaimer: “The following series is designed to entertain and inform – not provide medical advice. You should always consult your doctor.” The second red flag – arguably the most concerning yet discreet – also appears in the opening credits: “In association with the Vogt Foundation,” it reads. This is the first and last time we hear about Vogt. Viewers may be interested to learn that the clinical trial conducted at Stanford University School of Medicine and the basis for this Netflix series was funded by the Vogt Foundation. This is quite a strong “association”. Charley Vogt, Secretary-Treasurer at Vogt, says the Foundation funds “organizations that protect animals and promote plant-based products.” For more details, click HERE FEATURING Stockmen's Livestock Exchange http://www.gostockmens.com/index.cfm @GoStockmens SPONSORS American Gelbvieh Association https://gelbvieh.org/ @AmericanGelbvieh Imogene Ingredients https://www.imogeneingredients.com/farmatanusa @farmatanusa Bred For Balance Sale https://www.bredforbalance.com/ Questions & Concerns From The Field? In “Fresh Flour to the People,” the third episode in her five-part series for Gravy, producer Irina Zhorov talks to bakers who have started demanding more from a key element in their craft—flour. When we talk about ingredients, there's a lot to consider: how fresh the fruit, how local the meat, how wild the fish. But for some reason, these are not questions most of us have been asking about flour—until more recently. In the South, much of the work to bring local, quality flours started in an inconspicuous little house and bakery in Marshall, North Carolina. People who have lived and worked at this property had a tendency to become obsessed with flour to the point that two of them actually transitioned away from baking, to milling flour. They've driven a small but mighty revolution among bakers in the South and beyond to take flour seriously, creating new markets and new flavors. A quick primer here. There are two basic kinds of wheat: hard wheat and soft wheat. Hard wheat has more protein, which gives the bread structure and allows it to rise and develop pretty air pockets. Hearty loaves require hard wheat, which did not grow in North Carolina. In fact, the whole South mostly grew soft wheats, which were better adapted to the local climate and land. Then local farmers and wheat breeders started experimenting with varieties of hard wheat, creating a local grain economy, a resurgence of small-scale mills, and breads packed with distinct and varied flavors. In this episode, Zhorov interviews Jennifer Lapidus, the first baker on the Marshall property, who began seeking a local hard wheat for the European-style, naturally leavened loaves she loves. Today, she runs Carolina Ground, a small grain mill in western North Carolina that has fostered a community of farmers, bakers, and millers. After Lapidus left, she rented the property to David Bauer, who opened Farm and Sparrow bakery and similarly became interested in milling; today, Farm and Sparrow is exclusively a mill. Bauer tells Zhorov of his path to working with local grains, and of the tension between innovation and tradition. Zhorov also speaks with David Marshall, a former wheat breeder for the U.S. Department of Agriculture who began experimenting with local varieties of hard wheat in the region. Finally, Camille Cogswell, who now owns the bakery with her partner, Drew DiTomo, shares how she is choosing the flour she will work with in the space, fostering connections to her new home, new foodways and purveyors, and new people along the way.
