John Loftus (BT Young Scientist STEM Inspirations podcast, 8Radio Ireland) and Dr. Nicola Millard return to Flixwatcher to review John's choice RRR. RRR (2022) is an Indian Telugu-language action epic - it's runtime is three hours plus - directed by S. S. Rajamouli. The central story is fictional but based on historical figures. In this version of history, S. S. Rajamouli took the coincidences between real life Indian revolutionaries Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem and imagined what it would be like if they had met and become friends. Don't be fooled by the historical context in thinking RRR is going to be an accurate or remotely believable story. From the outset we are informed no animal were harmed, because they are CGI and completely ridiculous. It made history when the big musical number “Naatu Naatu” was the Oscar for Best Original Song, making it the first song from an Indian film, as well as the first from an Asian film, to win in this category. RRR is a tricky one to recommend, it's mash of genres that include world cinema, historical epic, CGI action, romance and musical make for an even experience. Scores for recommendability reflected this, given its three hour plus runtime scores for repeat viewing were lower to give an overall rating of 3.24. It stars Jessie Buckley as the Young Woman, who could be called Lucy, Louisa, Lucia, and Ames and Jessie Plemmons as her boyfriend Jake. On a wintery car journey to meet Jake's parents, Mother (Toni Collette) and Father (David Thewlis), the Young Woman is contemplating ending their relationship. After their arrival at Jake's family home things become increasingly surreal and reality, memory and imagination all merge into one. It is fair to say the reaction for i'm thinking of ending things was mixed for Flixwatcher and guests, despite being huge fans of other Kaufman films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich. Scores for recommendability were quite low and only improved slightly for small screen and to give an overall rating of 2.75. The Atheist & Christian Book Club is an outreach of Watchman Fellowship, the parent ministry of Apologetics Profile. It is a monthly gathering of believers and skeptics respectfully discussing important books from both perspectives. In this special edition of Apologetics Profile, Kirby Anderson of Probe ministries interviews Christian apologist James Walker and atheist apologist Bill Kluck about this unique book club they founded in 2017. The interview originally aired on Point of View, an international syndicated radio program carried on 265 stations with an audience of about 1 million. Watchman staff apologist, Daniel Ray who helps facilitate the book club, was also interviewed. What Happens at the Club? Identical twins David and John Loftus had an idyllic and happy childhood. They were so alike that as toddlers you could hardly tell them apart. They were very close growing up together. But after a cricket injury and subsequent brain scan, they discovered that John had a brain tumour. David struggled but he remained strong for his brother. John did beat the tumour, but contracted meningitis soon afterwards. During his treatment, a medical error left John in a coma. He died a few days later. After his death, David had to rebuild his life alone. He changed his career and eventually had a family of his own. He tells Emily Webb how he coped with John's death and how a book about his experience, Diary of a Lone Twin, is his love-letter to his brother. Carter Warden is a former conservative pastor of 25 years, now openly atheist. Using the pseudonym “Adam Mann”, he was a founder of The Clergy Project, an on-line support group for clergy who no longer believe the doctrines of the churches they serve. “Adam” was one of the original five interviewees in the 2010 Dennett-LaScola article, “Preachers who are not Believers.” While still in ministry, he was interviewed undercover by ABC World News Tonight and the Canadian Broadcasting Company. Last fall he "came out" publicly as an atheist at the Freedom From Religion Foundation's annual gathering. A press release was picked up by the Johnson City Press and Carter was outed to his church, friends, and extended family. In this interview, he talks about that experience, the challenge facing clergy who no longer believe yet who make a living for their families by serving their churches, and the liberation when people are able to be honest with themselves and others about what they really believe. While on tour promoting his new book "The Magic of Reality" Richard Dawkins found himself banned from a book signing at a Detroit area country club after the owner learned that Dawkins was an atheist. Dawkins called the last-minute cancelation of the event an act of "sheer bigotry" but some insist that a privately owned business has the right to refuse service to atheists. Jennifer Beahan, the assistant director for the Center For Inquiry Michigan, joins us on the show to explain how the law does not allow discrimination against the non-religious and why CFIMI will be filing a lawsuit against the club. John W. Loftus earned M.A. and M.Div. degrees in theology and philosophy from Lincoln Christian Seminary under the guidance of Dr. James D. Strauss. He then attended Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, where he studied under Dr. William Lane Craig and received a Th.M. degree in philosophy of religion. Before leaving the church, he had ministries in Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana, and taught at several Christian colleges. Today he still teaches as an adjunct instructor in philosophy at Kellogg Community College and has an online blog devoted to "debunking Christianity." His new book is Why I Became an Atheist: A Former Preacher Rejects Christianity. In this interview with D.J. Grothe, John Loftus discusses his background as an Evangelical Christian preacher and apologist and what led to his rejection of the faith, including both emotional loss and "lovelessness in the church," and also philosophical arguments and historical evidence that caused him to doubt. He critiques the Christian illusion of moral superiority. He challenges religion with what he calls the "outsider test." He explores whether logic and reason led to his atheism, or followed only after he adopted an atheistic point of view for emotional reasons. And he explains what he does believe in now that he no longer believes in Christianity or God, and the benefits he thinks this new worldview brings him.
