[NOTE: This podcast is also available on video here: https://youtu.be/jvwhJpZiQZ8] On part two of our special two-part video and podcast episode of Peter Boghossian and Street Epistemology, Watchman Fellowship staff apologist Daniel Ray speaks with senior apologist Brady Blevins about how to recognize a street epistemology conversation and how we can and should respond. If you have children or grandchildren active on social media sharing their faith or if they are away at college, they are likely to encounter atheists using the tactics and techniques of street epistemology. In this day and time, where it seems truth is in short supply, it is more crucial than ever that we know why we believe what we believe. The difficult questions and challenges to our faith are on the rise. We must be prepared to give a defense for the hope that is in us with gentleness and reverence (1 Peter 3:15). Street epistemology is a growing, worldwide phenomena used by many atheists and skeptics for the purpose of getting believers to doubt and/or give up their faith altogether. On this episode you'll hear and see real-world examples of street epistemologists engaging people with their carefully crafted questions and we'll give you the practical and biblical tips and insights as to how you can respond. We have prepared a treasure trove of resources on this important topic. In addition to this podcast and video, we have prepared three additional videos on the topic as well as a four-page Profile on Peter Boghossian and Street Epistemology. Peter Gregory Boghossian is an American philosopher. He is an assistant professor of philosophy at Portland State University, and his areas of academic focus include atheism, critical thinking, pedagogy, scientific skepticism, and the Socratic method. He is the author of A Manual for Creating Atheists and (with James Lindsay) How to Have Impossible Conversations: A Very Practical Guide. Boghossian was involved in the Grievance Studies affair (also called "Sokal Squared" in media coverage) with collaborators James Lindsay and Helen Pluckrose, in which they published several hoax papers in academic journals, as part of their criticism of a set of fields including gender studies. As a result, Portland State University initiated a research misconduct investigation of him in 2018. Boghossian coined the term street epistemology for a set of conversational techniques he described which are designed to enable examination of strongly held beliefs, especially of the religious kind, in a non-confrontational manner.
In today's episode, I speak with Anthony Magnabosco. Anthony is a skeptic and atheist from San Antonio, Texas who has been practicing and promoting Street Epistemology since 2013. Anthony has had several hundred chats (many of them on camera and uploaded to his YouTube channel) on a variety of claims including Gods, ghosts, karma, law of attraction, and a variety of social and political topics. He is also a Founder and the current Executive Director of the new nonprofit organization called Street Epistemology International. Anthony has given dozens of talks and workshops on Street Epistemology at conferences and events domestically and internationally. We spend our time in this episode discussing Street Epistemology, which is essentially a form of dialogue that involves asking questions to better understand the foundations on which a belief is built. It's all about better understanding a person's belief. This is contrast to a debate, where each person presents an argument to support their point. In this conversation, we discuss what SE is, some basic tips for using it properly and the ethics of the approach. We talk about doubt and ask whether it should be avoided or embraced, the difficulties people face in having conversations today and much more. **This episode was recorded on January 23, 2021**ANTHONY MAGNABOSCOYouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCocP40a_UvRkUAPLD5ezLIQTwitter: https://twitter.com/magnaboscoOTHER RESOURCEShttps://streetepistemology.comSE Discord: https://discord.gg/sKap3zMSE Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/StreetEpistemology/SE Playlist: https://tinyurl.com/SELatestReleasesInterview on UnityNow! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FKFxtcxu3A&t=1202s“Gender is Binary” talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbNlZEKkBRc&t=309s“A Manual for Creating Atheists” by Peter Boghossian: https://amzn.to/3sc7DF1“How to Have Impossible Conversations: A Very Practical Guide” by Peter Boghossian and James Lindsay: https://amzn.to/3dr9TUStheEWpodcasthttp://ericwhte.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/ericwhteInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/eric.whte/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCw27qaF6r_XdQrzREV21QSANewsletter: http://ericwhte.com/newsletter/TIMESTAMPS00:00 Welcome2:55 Introducing Anthony Magnabosco and Street Epistemology8:12 Gender Is Binary12:00 The benefits of seeing SE in action on video18:11 Can SE be a back and forth?24:21 Has Anthony revised his beliefs as a result of an SE conversation?28:09 Why did Anthony start filming his interactions?33:52 How can people self-evaluate their progress without recording it?44:46 Preconceived notions about your interlocutor 47:32 Staying calm in potentially heated conversations50:37 Dealing with trigger points56:35 How to s
[NOTE: This podcast is also available on video here: https://youtu.be/fMUF_y9q1ew] Chances are, if you are actively sharing your faith on social media to any degree, or if you have children or grandchildren away at college, or if you're out for a stroll in a public park, you may have or will eventually encounter a "street epistemologist." What is street epistemology? It is a movement within the atheist and skeptic community which began from a 2013 book A Manual For Creating Atheists written by atheist and philosopher Peter Boghossian. Though Boghossian himself is no longer actively involved in the movement today, it nevertheless has remained a popular and growing trend among skeptics in engaging Christians and other theists in conversation with the intent to cause doubt and, as the book title says clearly, create atheists. Street Epistemology or SE for short, is a kind of dialectical method that incorporates carefully crafted Socratic-like questions about a Christian's level of confidence in their belief in God. The SE'er will ask several questions, without ever directly engaging in factual discussions about Christianity, but will instead ask specific philosophical questions about how and why a Christian holds to the confidence of their belief, with the intent of causing doubt. To this day, it remains a movement within the atheist and skeptic community, though many who practice SE will often converse about other topics such as karma, new age mysticism, other religions, politics, alternative medicines and many others. But the most popular videos on YouTube of SE practitioners are those where believers are suddenly questioning their beliefs within the span of a very brief conversation. Sadly, this method has had "success" in catching Christians unaware, many unprepared or simply unable to provide solid answers to the questions put to them, especially regarding the definition and use of the word "faith" which to this day remains a primary target of SE disciples. It is not a cult or a secret organization with a hierarchy of leadership, but an open and publicly practiced technique, complete with a comprehensive website (StreetEpistemology.com), YouTube videos, and a growing and influential social-media presence. On this special two-part episode, Watchman staff apologist Daniel Ray and Watchman Senior Apologist Brady Blevins take you inside the movement and give you a first-hand account of Peter Boghossian, the leading practitioners of SE, how to recognize it, and how to respond with confidence and truth. On Part 1 we examine the work and background of Peter Boghossian and talk about the basics of what SE is. In his wildly popular book, A Manual for Creating Atheists, Peter Boghossian, a philosophy professor at Portland State University, outlines his process of “street epistemology,” which is intended to be a process of anti-evangelization, or talking people out of their religious faith. Bishop Barron and Brandon Vogt discuss this method of “street epistemology” and whether it’s a good approach for religious dialogue.

0012 - In this episode I review a book by Peter Boghossian called, "A Manual for Creating Atheists." Dr. Boghossian is a Professor at Portland State University and teaches a class on Atheism. In this book he tries to build up an army of "Street Epistemologists" who will engage with those who have "faith" and ultimately disabuse them of their false beliefs. He believes that the proper way to engage with those of "faith" is to attack faith as a way of knowing. In my review I talk about the things that we agree on and about how I think the things I learned in reading his book will be very effective in talking to LDS and most evangelical Christians who have "faith in faith." I talk about why I think that Dr. Boghossian's understanding of faith is fatally flawed and what faith really is. I also talk about how this false view of "faith in faith" is infecting evangelicals, churches and campus ministries all across the world.

The book "A Manual for Creating Atheists" has sparked an entire movement of atheists with a special set of tools which are supposed to help people restore their "sense of wonder". But I'm wondering if this continual misrepresentation of facts and reason is actually brainwashing the very people it purports to help. If you are into "Street Epistemology" then I hope you will watch and consider the following. I've spent many hours interacting with people who use some form of Street Epistemology (Pine Creek, Paulogia, etc.) and I have some things I'd like to share about it. What happens when a Street Epistemologist sits down to atheist-convert two Mormon Missionaries who have sat down to Mormon-convert him? It’s a wild wacky panel discussion full of laughs and groans and cognitive distortions of all shapes and sizes. Enjoy.
What is relativism? Is it okay for anyone to believe anything that they want? Where do you draw the line between what is okay to critique and what is off limits? Today Glenn, Matt, Tom, Delany, and Chelsea discuss RELATIVISM.
What is the socratic method? How can it be used effectively in conversations with people who believe things differently than you do? Glenn is joined by Brother Jake, Delany Darco, and Brady Bluhn to discuss part 3 of Peter Boghossian’s “A Manual for Creating Atheists.”
Is faith a reliable way to determine truth? The biblical answer is no, but many Christians seem to think it is and get tripped up in conversations when asked this by street epistemologists. From the book "A Manual for Creating Atheists", street epistemology has quickly become the new atheist evangelism and is being adopted worldwide by atheists seeking to shake the faith of Christians. In tonight's show, host Jason Gallagher and Tony Yu have a live conversation with an atheist "street epistemologist" as we seek to walk through their methodology and demonstrate how Christians can be better equipped to respond to its challenges. Enjoy the show!
What is faith? How is it different from hope? What is an atheist? How is that different from an agnostic? Glenn is joined by Delany Darco and Tom Perry to discuss part 2 of Peter Boghossian’s “A Manual for Creating Atheists.”
Were you ever a Missionary for the Mormon church? Did you ever become an Atheist? Have you ever wanted to become a Missionary for Atheism and talk people out of their faith? Have you ever wondered what an Atheist Missionary discussion handbook would look like? Well, look no more. Today Glenn, Tom, Heather, Randy, and […]
Last week, Infants on Thrones started the process of smacking down (or, probably “smacking-up” really) Peter Boghossian’s important and provocative book “A Manual for Creating Atheists.” We are approaching this in a different way than we have in the past, and you are invited to join us for the sausage-making “behind the scenes” elements of this journey. In this episode, we continue the conversation on Creating Atheists and Justin tries to clarify some babbling while Everett introduces the Babylon Bee in all its glory. We also discuss Liberal Protestantism and how it can lead to atheism as well until we wrap things up with how we can avoid this pitfall of teachings that can lead to atheism. Things Mentioned in this Episode: 1 Kings 16:11 – Oh yes, it’s there…he pisseth against the wall John 14:2 – In my Father’s house is many mansions… http://babylonbee.com/ Presiding Bishop Michael Curry Royal Wedding Sermon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gonlKodrmk Find us on Twitter and Facebook at @fundrainpod We’d like help in steering our topics so feel free to let us know what topics you would like us to explore. In today's episode, we talk about how fundamentalism draws a line in the sand for people who assume that you must believe everything is literal or you’re not a believer. Ep 085: Street Epistemology Tutorial 5: When to Bail on Believers San Antonio, TX 30 December 2014 Twitter: https://twitter.com/magnabosco Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/magnabosco210 This fifth tutorial details several examples where it's likely best to terminate a Street Epistemology encounter. Ultimately, the decision to continue or leave will fall on the individual. It's my goal, by showing a few examples, to help viewers become prepared to make that choice when the time comes. My objective is to teach others how to conduct similar conversations with believers—regardless of the religion they subscribe to—based on techniques from Dr. Peter Boghossian's book, “A Manual for Creating Atheists”. I also want to encourage others to build off of these techniques and conduct similar conversations with believers in their own unique style.
