SummaryChad Gross interviews Dr. Christopher Cloos about the challenging Old Testament violence texts and his recent debate with theologian Randal Rauser. They explore the complexities of interpreting these texts, the role of moral intuition, and the contrasting views of covenant virtue ethics and providential errancy theory. The conversation delves into how moral intuitions can inform biblical interpretation while also addressing the potential pitfalls of subjectivity in understanding scripture. They explore how moral intuition can be used to interpret scripture, the implications of difficult passages, and the importance of engaging with differing views charitably. The conversation also highlights resources for further learning in this area.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Apologetics and Old Testament Violence03:02 Dr. Cloos' Background and Interest in Old Testament Texts06:06 Debate Overview: Rauser vs. Cloos on Biblical Violence08:47 Understanding Moral Intuition in Biblical Interpretation11:55 Covenant Virtue Ethics vs. Providential Errancy Theory14:54 The Role of Moral Intuition in Exegesis17:53 Concerns About Subjectivity in Interpretation20:50 Using Jesus as a Tool for Interpretation25:58 Epistemic Circularity and Moral Intuition32:28 Covenant Virtue Ethics and Difficult Texts40:02 The Role of Hyperbole in Ancient Texts48:10 Engaging with Different Views Charitably53:42 Resources for Further Learning================================We appreciate your feedback. If you're on TWITTER, you can follow Chad @TBapologetics.You can follow Brian @TheBrianAutenAnd of course, you can follow @Apologetics315If you have a question or comment for the podcast, record it and send it our way using www.speakpipe.com/Apologetics315 or you can email us at podcast@apologetics315.com

Summary In this conversation, Tim and Dr. Randal Rauser respond to a video from the Within Reason Podcast hosted by atheist Alex O'Connor, in which he discusses William Lane Craig's defense of the Canaanite slaughter in the Bible. They discuss the moral implications of God commanding the killing of innocent children and the justification of genocide. They also explore the concept of divine command morality and its implications for moral intuitions. The conversation raises questions about the consistency of God's moral commands and the trustworthiness of moral intuition. In this conversation, Tim and Randall discuss the moral implications of God commanding the killing of innocent children in the Bible. They explore the theological justifications offered by William Lane Craig and critique them, highlighting the moral repugnance of such actions. They also discuss the impact on the soldiers who carried out these commands and the potential dangers of interpreting ancient texts literally in a contemporary context. The conversation raises important questions about the nature of morality and the role of religion in shaping ethical beliefs. Takeaways The theological justifications offered by William Lane Craig for God commanding the killing of innocent children are morally repugnant. Interpreting ancient texts literally in a contemporary context can lead to dangerous justifications for violence and harm. Religious beliefs need to be critically analyzed along with their implications for moral decision-making. Check out our website for merch, educational materials, and how to join our community! On July 25 The Satanic Temple (TST) celebrated one of their holidays, Unveiling Day. Their website describes this as a time to commemorate the unveiling of their Baphomet with Children statue in 2015. This holiday includes a "celebration of religious plurality and shedding archaic superstition." In this collaborative podcast episode with Sacred Tension, TST minister Stephen Bradford Long, and progressive Christian Randal Rauser, discuss perspectives on these aspects of the holiday. Stephen Bradford Long is a nontheistic minister with TST, and host of the Sacred Tension podcast. He also recently started writing for Substack. Josh's favorite Christian apologist, Dr. Randal Rauser, joins the show. Randal describes himself as "progressively Evangelical and generously Orthodox." Josh asks him about open-mindedness, his observations about the pro-life movement, when it's appropriate to call leaders out publicly, and the difference between an "agitation apologetics model" and an "agreement apologetics model." While Josh doesn't agree with everything Rauser believes, that's not the point, and this isn't a debate episode. Josh found this to be a good opportunity to listen to the views of a very careful thinker in spite of the fact that they don't agree on everything within the abortion debate. Show NotesJosh Parikh is an old friend of ours having contributed to our Discussion Groups over many years as a Christian Apologist who has always thought deeply about the issues and maintained intellectual integrity. He has been on a journey, especially having engaged with Biblical scholarship. This has overlapped with his time at Oxford University and continued since graduating. Like many, he has remained a Christian and has moved in a ‘progressive' direction. Josh recently gave a talk “A Tumultuous Period in Apologetics?” to the “Unbelievable Christian and Skeptic Discussion Group” in London, and we were eager to have him share that material on the show. Josh sees a crisis not just in the scandals such as with Ravi Zacharias but at a root conflict between the aims of apologetics in conservative Christianity and the commitments involved in genuine scholarship. We had so much to talk about that we will need 2 shows to benefit fully from Josh's wisdom. Another classic show from the archives. Randal Rauser is a Christian, John Loftus is a former-Christian-now-atheist. They co-authored the book “God Or Godless? debating 20 controversial questions.” They joined me for two discussions. In his “Outsider Test for Faith” Loftus claimed that Christians would abandon their faith if they critiqued it in the way they do other religions. But Rauser argued that Loftus needed to put his own atheistic worldview through the test. They also debated whether stories of miracles can count as evidence of the supernatural. S3 Ep 5 Conversations With My Inner Atheist It is normal to doubt what you have learned about the Bible. Progressive Christianity has gotten a bad reputation in many Christian circles. In order to understand more about this phenomenon, I have interviewed Randal Rauser to understand more about this phenomena and understand what Progressive Christians actually are apart from what is commonly attributed to them. With people like @alisachilders talking about the dangers of Progressive Christianity, it is important to ensure that we are all talking about the same thing when it comes to progressive christianity. Also known as The Tentative Apologist, Dr. Randal Rauser is a Canadian theologian and philosopher, author, and overall deep thinker. He joins us today to discuss "progressive" scholarship. As information becomes more readily available in our times, so does access to Biblical scholarship. As people get into Biblical scholarship they are met with the often confronting facts that scholars seem to hold less than conservative views on scripture. Christians who grew up hearing that the Bible has no contradictions may be shocked to learn that a good amount of Christian Scholars agree that the Bible does actually have contradictions. This is just one example of many that people come across. So, in light of this reality, how do "lay Christians" understand the difference between conservative Christianity and what looks like a progressive scholarship? This is what we talk to Dr. Rauser about. How should we understand Old Testament accounts of warfare and violence where God seems to command the slaughter of men, women and children? Paul Copan, author of 'Is God A Vindictive Bully?' aims to show why the Old Testament accounts, severe as they may seem, are not incompatible with Jesus in the New Testament. Randal Rauser, author of 'Jesus Loves Canaanites', says that too many 'apologists for genocide' are defending the indefensible and argues for an alternative reading of scripture. They discuss whether the warfare passages are hyperbolic, whether non-combatants would have been killed, and whether the term 'genocide' is appropriate. I invited Randal Rauser on my show back in July. After our live conversation, he offered me a thought experiment that tried to show that loving rightly is more important than believing rightly. His thought experiment is in his video, "How You LOVE is More Important than What You BELIEVE" on YouTube. I told him that I would make a video with a more detailed response, so here it is!

Deconstruction is a hot topic in many Christian spaces. If your students are at all connected online they've heard people talking about it. They might even be doing it themselves. Depending on your age and stage of life, walking with students who are deconstructing can come with a lot of different emotions and varying solutions. Theologian Randal Rauser defends 'progressive' Christians such as Rob Bell, Richard Rohr and Brian Mclaren, against 'heresy hunters' in his new book 'Progressive Christians Love Jesus Too' a response to Alisa Childers' book 'Another Gospel?'. Christian philosopher and apologist Douglas Groothuis explains why he thinks some progressive Christians are outside the bounds of orthodoxy and shares Childers' concerns about their influence. Progressive Christianity is a movement of growing popularity within the Christian Church. In a similar vein, a lot of people like to label it as dangerous, as post-truth, as a form of post-modernism. In this video, Dr. Randal Rauser discusses the differences.
Randal Rauser recently wrote the book "Progressive Christians Love Jesus Too." I invited him on the show today to discuss how progressives and evangelicals view Jesus and Christianity differently. Is progressive Christianity another gospel or another religion? This friendly conversation will help you think well about those questions. Randal Rauser is a systematic and analytic theologian of evangelical persuasion. He received his PhD at King's College, London. He is Professor of Historical Theology at Taylor Seminary where he has taught since 2003. He is the author of several books including "Is the Atheist my Neighbour?" (Wipf and Stock, 2015), "What on Earth do We Know About Heaven?" (Baker, 2013), the bestseller "Finding God in the Shack" (Biblica, 2009), "Theology in Search of Foundations" (Oxford, 2009) and "The Swedish Atheist, the Scuba Diver and Other Apologetic Rabbit Trails" (InterVarsity, 2012).
Progressive Christianity has become a hot topic in Christian circles of late, as a result, I have invited Dr. Randal Rauser onto the channel to discuss it!In this video, we will be covering all forms of questions ranging from what is progressive Christianity, to what is heresy, and beliefs about Christ, aiming to provide a comprehensive analysis of progressive Christianity and its beliefs. I hope you enjoy this video and feel free to let me know any questions in the livechat for a Q&A session. --------------------------To check out more about my content feel free to go to my YouTube Channel Philosophy for All to access clips and extra discussions

Does God love the Canaanites? If you have read your Bible, you might think that the answer is no. There is no way that God could love the Canaanites based on what we see in the book of Joshua. There it sounds like God is commanding genocide. Genocide does not sound very loving. Today I have Dr Randal Rauser on to discuss how we should interpret these passages with the love of Christ in mind. Credits Host: R.T. Mullins (PhD, University of St Andrews) is a senior fellow at the Collegium for Advanced Studies, University of Helsinki. Guest: Randal Rauser (PhD, King's College, London) is associate professor of historical theology at Taylor Seminary. Christians have been quick to raise concerns about violence in the Qur'an in the Muslim context, but often ignore or gloss over violence in the biblical text. One of the greatest examples of violence in the Bible is the divine command for the wholesale destruction of the Canaanites. In this episode of the podcast our guest is Randal Rauser, who discusses his book Jesus Loves Canaanites: Biblical Genocide in the Light of Moral Intuition. Rauser is Professor of Historical Theology at Taylor Seminary in Edmonton Alberta. Also mentioned in this podcast and related to the subject matter: "The Zeal of Phinehas: The Bible and the Legitimation of Violence" by John J. In this Devil's Advocate Debate, Dr. Randal Rauser (a theist) will be defending God's nonexistence and Joe Schmid (a non-theist) will be defending God's existence. A devil's advocate takes the opposing viewpoint to enrich the debate and develop ideas.
Why isn't God clearer in the Bible? Dr. Randal Rauser joins me to talk about the last chapter of his book, Jesus Loves the Canaanites, and the issue of Biblical Ambiguity. How should Christians interpret passages of scripture that violate our most basic moral intuitions? Passages like Deuteronomy 7, 20, and Joshua 1-12 that portray God as commanding and aiding the Israelites to brutally annihilate the Canaanites, young and old, men and women. Dr. Randal Rauser recently authored what I consider to be the best book on this topic, "Jesus Loves Canaanites". In this interview we summarize the major points of the book, focusing specifically on Rauser's critique of Dr. Paul Copan's and Dr. Matthew Flannagan's arguments, and Rauser's defense of what he calls "Providential Errancy." I highly encourage you to read Rauser's book for yourself. The options for addressing ultimate concerns includes not only religious possibilities, but Atheistic ones as well. This is particularly the case with the rise of The Nones, those that the Pew Forum describe as "the religiously unaffiliated share of the population, consisting of people who describe their religious identity as atheist, agnostic or 'nothing in particular,'" a rapidly growing segment of the population." Christians tend to have "cool" and negative feelings toward Atheists, and in this conversation with Randal Rauser we explore the reasons why. We also discuss some of the stereotypes associated with Atheism, the importance of emotions as well as rational considerations, and how Christians can engage Atheists in more neighborly ways. Rauser is Professor of Historical Theology at Taylor Seminary in Edmonton, Alberta. He is the author of many books, including Conversations with My Inner Atheist (2020), An Atheist and a Christian Walk into a Bar (2016), Is the Atheist My Neighbor (2015), and You're Not as Crazy as I Think (2011). I had the pleasure of hosting an informal discussion between theologian and apologist Randal Rauser and The Counter Apologist, a prominent atheist/skeptic blogger, about the evidence for Jesus' resurrection. Near the end, I even got to take my moderator hat off for a second and have a bout with CA for twenty minutes or so.
