696 Armor of Light - Romans 13:12

Follower of One : Missions For The Rest Of Us

Do you ever think of light as armor? Hi, I'm Mike Henry Sr. with Follower of One one. Thanks for joining me again today on the Follower of One podcast. We've done the last couple of episodes in Romans 13, and as I've continued reading through that chapter, I came across verse 12. "The night is far gone. The day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light." I looked at this translation, this is the English Standard Version, but I looked at this in several translations and everybody refers to either the armor of light or the weapons of light. So we're not talking about something like a light armor as opposed to heavy armor.   We're talking about the defensive weapons that we get and the offensive weapons that we get when we can stand in the light. When we're not hiding anything. This is talking about not living a life that's hidden, but living a life that's open and exposed, and in the light that we get from Jesus .   In Matthew 5:16, it talks about how we need to let our light shine, in such a way that others may see God and glorify him. But this armor of light means I believe that we're to be transparent, that we have nothing to hide. Phillips Craig and Dean used to have a song called Nothing to Prove, and the chorus said nothing to prove nothing to lose, nothing to hide. This armor of light means that we're free to be what we are in the world, and the consequences of our actions while they might be bad or they might be good, we can trust God that he will cause them to work out for good.   According to Romans 8:28, for example, there's a confidence that comes from knowing that we only have one story that we only live one way. That there's only one version of I want there to only be one version of me and I want to live in the light in such a way that God's light becomes my armor. Now this word is not capitalized here, but I think he's talking about how practically living a transparent life makes us protected and ready for whatever God has for us. We have the armor that we get from living a transparent life.   Today, I want to challenge us as believers let's live transparently in our world. Our job is to be a servant. We can simply be saved, we can trust Jesus to get us into heaven when we die and not do anything else the rest of our lives. I believe , we can try that. I'm not too sure how effective that is. But we miss out on life with Jesus. We miss out on the highs and the lows of following Christ and being transparent servants and lovers of others in the world. That's what we're called to be.   Thank you for being a marketplace minister. Thank you for going into your workplace, not as someone who's hiding in the darkness, but as someone who lives according to the light. We have nothing to fear, if we're trusting Jesus. We live in a broken world and many bad things happen. I'm not saying that bad things won't happen, but I'm saying that we get this armor that we get from God when we trust him and we live transparently. And that's what I believe this passage is telling us to.   Would you like to be part of a community of believers who are working through the process of going from being saved to being a servant. We go from our starting point of trusting Christ to actually living according to his laws and his rules and his guidance. You remember, he bought all the commandments down to love God and love people. And that's what we try and do. We're working on that in our online community called Follower of One. You can check that out at https://community.followerofone.org. Thanks again for being a marketplace minister and for making a difference in your workplace, what we do because we follow Jesus matters.   Thanks very much.

Few songwriters cultivate more fertile creative soil when crafting a new album than Phillips, Craig, and Dean. Juggling dual vocations as both pastors and recording artists for more than two decades, Randy Phillips, Shawn Craig, and Dan Dean have created an impressive body of work inspired by what God is doing in their lives and their respective churches.  Transparency, passion and integrity have long been the foundation for Phillips, Craig, and Dean’s music and ministry.  For more than two decades, the trio has churned out some of Christian music’s most enduring hits, including “Revelation Song,” which recently earned RIAA Gold Single status, signifying downloads of more than 500,000.  This is only the seventh time in the history of Christian music that a single has reached gold status. The song spent 17 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Christian AC chart and also topped the National Christian Audience chart, AC Indicator chart and Soft AC charts.  On this episode, John Chisum sits down with PCD’s Dan Dean to recall the group’s beginnings in 1991at Star Song Records and to walk through highlights of the group’s fantastic 25-year run. Dan shares some great stories, his songwriting process, and some valuable songwriting advice to aspiring writers.  For more information visit www.nashvillechristiansongwriters.com and join the Successful Christian Songwriters Group on Facebook!  https://www.facebook.com/groups/SuccessfulChristianSongwriters/?fref=nf
