7/6/2025: Rev. Paul Bang   Nehemiah 13:4-31   English Standard Version     4 Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, and who was related to Tobiah, 5 prepared for Tobiah a large chamber where they had previously put the grain offering, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of grain, wine, and oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests. 6 While this was taking place, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king. And after some time I asked leave of the king 7 and came to Jerusalem, and I then discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. 8 And I was very angry, and I threw all the household furniture of Tobiah out of the chamber. 9 Then I gave orders, and they cleansed the chambers, and I brought back there the vessels of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense. 10 I also found out that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them, so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled each to his field. 11 So I confronted the officials and said, “Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their stations. 12 Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, wine, and oil into the storehouses. 13 And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and as their assistant Hanan the son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, for they were considered reliable, and their duty was to distribute to their brothers. 14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for his service. 15 In those days I saw in Judah people treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them on the day when they sold food. 16 Tyrians also, who lived in the city, brought in fish and all kinds of goods and sold them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah, in Jerusalem itself! 17 Then I confronted the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster[a] on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.” 19 As soon as it began to grow dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and gave orders that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of my servants at the gates, that no load might be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 Then the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice. 21 But I warned them and said to them, “Why do you lodge outside the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath. 22 Then I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your steadfast love. 23 In those days also I saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and they could not speak the language of Judah, but only the language of each people. 25 And I confronted them and cursed them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair. And I made them take an oath in the name of God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. 26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin on account of such women? Among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless, foreign women made even him to sin. 27 Shall we then listen to you and do all this great evil and act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?” 28 And one of the sons of Jehoiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I chased him from me. 29 Remember them, O my God, because they have desecrated the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites. 30 Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign, and I established the duties of the priests and Levites, each in his work; 31 and I provided for the wood offering at appointed times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.

Ecclesiastes 2 English Standard VersionThe Vanity of Self-Indulgence2 I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.” But behold, this also was vanity. 2 I said of laughter, “It is mad,” and of pleasure, “What use is it?” 3 I searched with my heart how to cheer my body with wine—my heart still guiding me with wisdom—and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the children of man to do under heaven during the few days of their life. 4 I made great works. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself. 5 I made myself gardens and parks, and planted in them all kinds of fruit trees. 6 I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees. 7 I bought male and female slaves, and had slaves who were born in my house. I had also great possessions of herds and flocks, more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem. 8 I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I got singers, both men and women, and many concubines, the delight of the sons of man.9 So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me. 10 And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil. 11 Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.The Vanity of Living Wisely12 So I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly. For what can the man do who comes after the king? Only what has already been done. 13 Then I saw that there is more gain in wisdom than in folly, as there is more gain in light than in darkness. 14 The wise person has his eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I perceived that the same event happens to all of them. 15 Then I said in my heart, “What happens to the fool will happen to me also. Why then have I been so very wise?” And I said in my heart that this also is vanity. 16 For of the wise as of the fool there is no enduring remembrance, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. How the wise dies just like the fool! 17 So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a striving after wind. The Vanity of Toil18 I hated all my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to the man who will come after me, 19 and who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. 20 So I turned about and gave my heart up to despair over all the toil of my labors under the sun,21 because sometimes a person who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed by someone who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil. 22 What has a man from all the toil and striving of heart with which he toils beneath the sun? 23 For all his days are full of sorrow, and his work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity.24 There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, 25 for apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment? 26 For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.English Standard Version (ESV)The Holy Bible, English Standard Version. ESV® Text Edition: 2016. Psalm 33English Standard Version33 Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous!    Praise befits the upright.2 Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre;    make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!3 Sing to him a new song;    play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.4 For the word of the Lord is upright,    and all his work is done in faithfulness.5 He loves righteousness and justice;    the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,    and by the breath of his mouth all their host.7 He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap;    he puts the deeps in storehouses.8 Let all the earth fear the Lord;    let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!9 For he spoke, and it came to be;    he commanded, and it stood firm.10 The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;    he frustrates the plans of the peoples.11 The counsel of the Lord stands forever,    the plans of his heart to all generations.12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,    the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!13 The Lord looks down from heaven;    he sees all the children of man;14 from where he sits enthroned he looks out    on all the inhabitants of the earth,15 he who fashions the hearts of them all    and observes all their deeds.16 The king is not saved by his great army;    a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.17 The war horse is a false hope for salvation,    and by its great might it cannot rescue.18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,    on those who hope in his steadfast love,19 that he may deliver their soul from death    and keep them alive in famine.20 Our soul waits for the Lord;    he is our help and our shield.21 For our heart is glad in him,    because we trust in his holy name.22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,    even as we hope in you.

In the 27th message of our “Unveiling Yahweh” series, we will be looking at the Discipline of God.   When a sinner begins following the Lord, he will quickly discover much within him that needs to change. While we may expect that to happen instantaneously, God's normal process is to sanctify us slowly for the rest of our lives. This is His process of discipline. Our progress in the spiritual life is largely dependent upon how we respond to this discipline. We can choose to submit to it, or we can disregard it.  Today's message unpacks Hebrews 12 and the love of God at work through the difficulty in our lives.     Scripture quotations marked (ESV) are from The ESV® Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version®), copyright © 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. Acts 19:21-41 English Standard VersionA Riot at Ephesus21 Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”22 And having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.23 About that time there arose no little disturbance concerning the Way. 24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen. 25 These he gathered together, with the workmen in similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth. 26 And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods. 27 And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.”28 When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 29 So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul's companions in travel. 30 But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him. 31 And even some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent to him and were urging him not to venture into the theater. 32 Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together. 33 Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward. And Alexander, motioning with his hand, wanted to make a defense to the crowd.34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”35 And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, “Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky? 36 Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash. 37 For you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess. 38 If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another. 39 But if you seek anything further, it shall be settled in the regular assembly. 40 For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion.” 41 And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.English Standard Version (ESV)The Holy Bible, English Standard Version. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.(English Standard Version)

Acts 19:8-20 English Standard Version8 And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God. 9 But when some became stubborn and continued in unbelief, speaking evil of the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus. 10 This continued for two years, so that all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. The Sons of Sceva11 And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them. 13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” 14 Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. 15 But the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?” 16 And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled. 18 Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. 19 And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.English Standard Version (ESV)The Holy Bible, English Standard Version. Psalm 31English Standard VersionTo the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.31 In you, O Lord, do I take refuge;    let me never be put to shame;    in your righteousness deliver me!2 Incline your ear to me;    rescue me speedily!Be a rock of refuge for me,    a strong fortress to save me!3 For you are my rock and my fortress;    and for your name's sake you lead me and guide me;4 you take me out of the net they have hidden for me,    for you are my refuge.5 Into your hand I commit my spirit;    you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.6 I hate those who pay regard to worthless idols,    but I trust in the Lord.7 I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love,    because you have seen my affliction;    you have known the distress of my soul,8 and you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy;    you have set my feet in a broad place.9 Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in distress;    my eye is wasted from grief;    my soul and my body also.10 For my life is spent with sorrow,    and my years with sighing;my strength fails because of my iniquity,    and my bones waste away.11 Because of all my adversaries I have become a reproach,    especially to my neighbors, and an object of dread to my acquaintances;    those who see me in the street flee from me.12 I have been forgotten like one who is dead;    I have become like a broken vessel.13 For I hear the whispering of many—    terror on every side!—as they scheme together against me,    as they plot to take my life.14 But I trust in you, O Lord;    I say, “You are my God.”15 My times are in your hand;    rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!16 Make your face shine on your servant;    save me in your steadfast love!17 O Lord, let me not be put to shame,    for I call upon you;let the wicked be put to shame;    let them go silently to Sheol.18 Let the lying lips be mute,    which speak insolently against the righteous    in pride and contempt.19 Oh, how abundant is your goodness,    which you have stored up for those who fear youand worked for those who take refuge in you,    in the sight of the children of mankind!20 In the cover of your presence you hide them    from the plots of men;you store them in your shelter    from the strife of tongues.21 Blessed be the Lord,    for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me    when I was in a besieged city.22 I had said in my alarm,    “I am cut off from your sight.”But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy    when I cried to you for help.23 Love the Lord, all you his saints!    The Lord preserves the faithful    but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage,    all you who wait for the Lord!

A song at the dedication of the temple.30 I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up    and have not let my foes rejoice over me.2 O Lord my God, I cried to you for help,    and you have healed me.3 O Lord, you have brought up my soul from Sheol;    you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit.4 Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints,    and give thanks to his holy name.5 For his anger is but for a moment,    and his favor is for a lifetime.Weeping may tarry for the night,    but joy comes with the morning.6 As for me, I said in my prosperity,    “I shall never be moved.”7 By your favor, O Lord,    you made my mountain stand strong;you hid your face;    I was dismayed.8 To you, O Lord, I cry,    and to the Lord I plead for mercy:9 “What profit is there in my death,    if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you?    Will it tell of your faithfulness?10 Hear, O Lord, and be merciful to me!    O Lord, be my helper!”11 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;    you have loosed my sackcloth    and clothed me with gladness,12 that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent.    O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

In the 24th message of our “Unveiling Yahweh” series, we will be looking at the Severity and the Mercy of God. “God hates the sin, but He loves the sinner.” While there is truth to these words, we have a propensity to make the love of God an excuse for living in habitual sin, while totally ignoring God's severity in dealing with sin. So in this week's message, Nate Danser breaks down what sin really is in order to help us more clearly understand how God sees sin. Then, he helps us appreciate the true love and mercy of God.   Scripture quotations are from The ESV® Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version®), copyright © 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers.
