That voice, those songs, that musical vibe that took over Christian radio in the late 1990s. They all belong to my friend Michelle Tumes, who wrote hit songs for Point of Grace and Jaci Velasquez, just to name a few, but also carved out her own legacy as one of the most unique and beloved CCM artists of all time. It was great fun catching up with her and I'm glad you could come along for the ride.

I first met Jaci when she was 15 years old, singing with the voice of a seasoned pro! She and her mom jumped on the 4HIM bus for two different tours in the 90s and now 30 years later we sit down to talk about life as a teen CCM sensation, the roads she never thought she'd travel, and how raising a family is not at all what she thought it would be.Support the Show.andychrisman.net

He is passionate about God and music and has over 20 years of experience in the music industry. John Martin, better known as Marty, has performed in front of thousands from the stage along with artists including Steven Curtis Chapman, Jaci Velasquez, and NewSong, among others. Originally from Paducah, Kentucky, Marty began learning to play the guitar at the age of four from Herb Chapman Sr., father of GRAMMY and Dove award winning artist Steven Curtis Chapman. Throughout his early life, Marty played talent shows and county fairs in Kentucky, sharpening his skills and preparing for the day he moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue his dream of a music career. During his college years in Kansas and Missouri, he shifted into music ministry, working with youth camps, which shaped his style of music into what it is today. In 2006, Marty became an ordained worship pastor and was dubbed a “musicianary” by one of his pastors. Since then, he has spent years touring the country, sharing the gospel of Jesus through his music in churches, camps, youth conferences/retreats, and colleges. “When I lead worship, my goal is not to become the focus, but to turn the focus to the throne of God. I want worshipers to look inside themselves and at their relationship with Jesus. To understand that apart from Christ there is no hope in the world and through Christ alone can salvation, peace, and joy be found,” says Marty. He adds, “These songs fit into every category of life. They are about real life, real joy, real love, real struggle. Being a Christian does not mean we won't have struggles. Christ told his disciples, ‘in this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.' (John 16:33) Even in the struggles, there should be worship. Everything we do in life should be an act of worship to the Lord.” Marty's music strives to be a reflection of that. As a songwriter, Marty writes multiple genres, including Pop, Country, Praise & Worship, Americana, Rock, and Dance with some of the top hit makers in Nashville including Mark Irwin (Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw), Nicole Witt (George Strait, Lee Brice), Brady Seals (Little Texas, Hot Apple Pie), Lindsay McCaul, Farewell Angelina, Luke Brown (American Idol), and Shay Watson (Sidewalk Prophets, The Young and the Restless). Marty also writes and produces songs for tv/film and ads with artists from all over the world. He currently has music placed on CBS, FOX Sports, Discovery Channel, History Channel, The Smithsonian Channel and more. Marty takes every opportunity given to him to create great music with the hope of enriching peoples live through it. In upbeat songs of praise to our Creator, heartfelt love songs for his wife, or heartbreaking stories of despair he has personally encountered, everyone can find something they are looking for in John Martin Keith's music. Marty is the owner of Edenbrooke Music. Edenbrooke Music strives to improve the quality of musical entertainment by improving talent though teaching, by improving sound through production, and by improving the career of the musician through performance and recording opportunity. Edenbrooke Music offers guitar lessons, live sound for special events, booking for touring artists and music production services. Learn more at www.edenbrookemusic.com.

Hello and welcome to Lechem Panim! You will remember that back in chapter 8 of the book of Acts, following Stephen's murder there was a great persecution that broke out against the Christian Church. Well, our passage today in chapter 11 describes in further detail what happened in the wake of that persecution. And you'll also recall that Saul of Tarsus led a monumental persecution against the Church in Jerusalem, causing the fellowship there to be driven out and scattered abroad. And it says in… Acts 11:19a (ESV)— 19 Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch,… The Scattering— Some of them went to Samaria (8:5, 25); some went to Caesarea (8:40; 10:24ff.), and others fled to places like Damascus (9:10), Lydda, Joppa, and Sharon (9:35–36). But while Christians are being driven into those regions, in the north (among the Gentiles) a church was also being established by displaced Jews who made their way to the coastal region of Phoenicia immediately north of Judea. Tyre and Sidon were two cities located in this region. And from here these Jews could take a ship for Cyprus, a major island sixty miles offshore. And from here they could continue up the coast to the city of Antioch, which was about 200 miles north of Sidon. But keep in mind that these Jews do not yet know that the Gospel has been made available to the Gentiles because they had fled Jerusalem before that had happened. And so they are still very nationalistic in their view of salvation, which they still thought was only for the Jew. And so verse 19 says that they were… Acts 11:19b-20 (ESV)— …speaking the word to no one except Jews. {But all that was about to change, as it says} 20 But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Hellenists also, preaching the Lord Jesus. The First Gentile Church— Now these men of Cyprus and Cyrene were Greek-speaking Jews who were from predominantly Gentile areas. They themselves were Hellenists and were therefore more open to sharing their faith with Gentiles than Palestinian Jews were during that time. And so out of their outreach the first Gentile church was born in Antioch. Antioch— Now Antioch was a major ancient metropolis in the first century world. The only other two metropolises that were bigger during that time were Rome and Alexandria. And so Antioch was a very significant city; and was noted for its culture and its commerce, because you had many Roman trade routes that passed directly through it. And (as the Roman author Cicero described) it was a place of learned men and liberal studies. However, it was also a despicably evil place, full of pagan worship and sexual immorality, which often is intimately tied to pagan worship. The temple of Daphne was only five miles from there, where open prostitution took place. And so it was a very dark place, certainly not where most people would want to start a Church. But you know, it is the dark places of the world that need the Church the most. Within A Yard— I love this quote by C.T. Studd. He said “Some want to live within the sound Of church or chapel bell; I want to run a rescue shop, Within a yard of hell.” The Basic Gospel— Now what interests me about that quote is that it assumes the Church/chapel is in the safe place; the place where we in our day and age often want to build our churches; the clean places. But here in the first century, the earliest churches often were those rescue shops built within a yard of hell. And the early Christians were therefore constantly coming into contact with broken, abused, and disenfranchised people; people who (think about it) had no framework for understanding what a Jewish Messiah could have to do with them to begin with. And so these Hellenists who were sharing their faith in this Gentile region had to start with the person of Jesus; His identity as the Son of God, the facts concerning His life, His death and what that meant for them as people in need of a Savior, and His resurrection. Now this is important for us to note because many times we are tempted to think that (because we aren't great theologians) we are not very well suited to sharing the Gospel. We think “somebody else will get this person because I'm not qualified”; when the reality is that the amount of theology you know (even if you just know the basic tenets of the Gospel) is actually pretty monumental. What little you think you have to offer is actually an abundance to somebody bound to paganism and therefore to a hopeless view of the world. Even just the Christian songs you may have already listened to today probably have enough good theology in them to forever change the lives of people if you are only willing to share it. Music & Spiritual Warfare— And Satan knows that by the way, which is why anywhere Christian music is played, he tries to interfere. My wife and I know a lady who owned a business that had music playing in the background. And there were always pagan songs playing; and I mean literally pagan songs. But one day one of her employees changed the music to Christian music and immediately this lady reacted and said, “We don't want to offend people.” And so she switched it right back to her pagan music. Now she never saw the disconnect. It it is pagan, that's fine. If it praises Buddha, Krishna, or any other pagan deity, that's fine. But the moment it becomes about Christ, Satan moves in to attack. Because one Christian song has the power to forever change the course of someone's life. You know enough theology (enough of the Gospel) to bring a revival to your area like nothing you've ever seen before. And let me tell you, as scary as those Daphne temples were in that culture; and the dark places here in and around our city are, none of them can even hold a candle to the power of the Gospel. Paper Tigers— Many years ago Jaci Velasquez (in her very first album) wrote a song called Paper Tigers, the words of which are very moving and powerful. And what she was saying in that song was that the worst Satan had to offer (and what all her worries and fears were based on) were only paper tigers, paper tigers that only looked scary, but which would fold over and fall in a second at a mere puff of the breath of God. And let me tell you, the worst Satan has to offer cannot stand in the face of the power of God at work in you. And there are gates of hell in your city that rattle every time you get up in the morning to brush your teeth; gates that shake as you pull into your place of work; gates that are within a hairs breadth of collapse if only you are willing to walk over and (in the name of Jesus) push them over. Jericho falls every day at the hands of obedient Christians. And that is what we see happening right here in the church at Antioch, as it says in… Acts 11:21 (ESV)— 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord. Spreading Like Wildfire— Now nothing could have prepared the Jerusalem Church for what happened in Antioch. Yes, prior to this you had the conversions of the Ethiopian eunuch and of Cornelius and his household. But here in Antioch the Gospel was spreading on a much larger scale; and it was spreading like a wildfire. And that makes sense; because it is in those areas that are most devoid of the Gospel; those areas that are most pagan that are also those areas that are the most starving and desperate for something more. A New Diet— I want you to imagine going to a restaurant. Imagine that for all of your life, every time you sat to eat at this (or any) restaurant, you were served only dry, overcooked, taste-less, freezer-burned mystery meat. Now you might not complain, if that is all you ever knew. But what it something new was offered to you one day? Well that's kind of what it was like in the religious world of Antioch. For these pagan gentiles, hearing the Gospel for the first time was like their sitting at their table in front of a plate of the only thing they had ever eaten; dry mystery meat. And then (out of nowhere) a Christian sits down next to you and when the waiter brings their plate, you see that says it contains a large marinated salisbury steak complete with buttered mashed potatoes and a fried onion blossom. And then the Christian eats it in front of you. And you see all love and joy written on their face. Imagine how the your eyes would widen; how your mouth would water. And then imagine the joy of having the Christian then turn to you half-way through and say, “Hey, my order was bigger than I thought it was going to be. Here, could you help me eat some of this?” and suddenly replace your plate of dry mystery meat with their plate of salisbury steak. Well, that is what it was like for these pagans to first encounter the message of the free gift of salvation offered to them in the name of Jesus. It wasn't until Christians offered to them the hope of salvation in and through Jesus Christ that they realized that what they had been living on wasn't even fit for dogs. You might say they were experiencing the fulfillment of… Psalm 34:8 (NIV)— 8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. The fall of the gods— They had tasted Christ and suddenly knew what they had been missing. And it would not be long before Christianity would spread beyond Antioch and overtake all of the Roman Empire. And the worship of most of these pagan gods would fall to the point where now most of the names of these pagan gods your average Joe doesn't even recognize; and those names that might be familiar to people tend to be (when you think about it) assigned to their animals rather than to their children (with few exceptions, such as Daphne). But in general, we call our dogs Zeus or Apollos or Hercules, but we call our children Paul, John, Peter, Rebeka, Kristie (Christ), or Jeremiah (or Jeremy), or Michael. You might say that the pagan gods of that time Yahweh not only wiped out, but profanes daily on the collars of our pets. Now God has a sense of humor; I truly believe that. But this joke God meant to be a running joke. And with that in mind, I'd just like to say, “May it be on the collars of the dogs of our children, our grandchildren, and our great-grandchildren that the pagan gods of our time might one day find their proper place as a result of our decision to (in our time) offer hungry souls something infinitely better. That's what these Jewish Christians did for these gentiles, and the Church therefore began exploding with this huge influx of gentile believers. And may that encourage us to this week share the Good News of the Gospel; the salisbury steak of the Gospel with someone who may be starving for it and not even know it. Bring them then Jesus so that they also may taste and see that the Lord is good. Let's do so. Amen.

Dreaming, planning, preparing for the future—it’s in our nature to map out where we’d like our lives to go. But in the midst of our dreaming, it’s important to take a step back and ask God, “What do You want for my life?” Because He might have a different—and better—answer for us. When Christian music artist Jaci Velasquez was pregnant with her son Zealand, she knew he’d have a ministry of his own one day. But when Jaci discovered Zealand had autism, she wondered how he’d ever spread God’s love if he couldn’t communicate. Over time, Jaci learned to shift her perspective from “Why me?” to “Why not me?” and she began to see how God can use anyone or anything for good. Worship pastor Andy Harrison was raised in a Christian home, but never really felt connected to God. After attending a youth camp and a Planetshakers conference, Andy was struck by how passionate the people around him were, and he wanted to discover this Jesus that had everyone so shaken up. Today Andy’s a mentor to youth and shows them how to be strong in faith while growing up, and how, even when we don’t know where to turn, we can find everything we need in Jesus. We often define life by the things we have. Boxcar Junkies lead vocalist and principle songwriter Brandon Reid Allen defines his by the things he’s survived. He was born in Indiana but his nomadic ways often led him astray. With extreme hearing loss as a child and subject to a tougher start than most, Allen wasn’t exactly someone you’d expect to catapult to a career as a singer-songwriter. But one thing his parents gave him before leaving this world was his first start in music through their family band. Allen started playing drums and bass until receiving his first acoustic guitar at age 12. That’s when the writing started. That’s when he first found his voice. Allen launched a successful career as a singer-songwriter. He won Best Rock Vocalist at the Los Angeles Music Awards as well as Songwriter of the Year. Not long after, he added Breakout Artist of the Year at the American Christian Music Awards, as well as Song of the Year at the Paramount Music Awards. He signed a label deal with distribution and publishing through EMI, creating quite a buzz as an independent musician. Allen soon would catch the ear of famed rock drummer Troy Luccketta of the multi-platinum selling band Tesla. “Troy has been instrumental in my career. He opened a lot of doors. He believed in me and gave me opportunities recording great music and sharing the stage with legends. The Eagles, Alice Cooper, Aaron Lewis. The list goes on.” Things looked promising on multiple fronts, but personal tragedy would come calling. “I made some stupid choices that led to my exodus. Drifting from town to town. Living on the streets, in the mountains, even the desert. Lost myself for sure. It wasn’t the first time. Hell, I ran away with the carnival when I was just a kid. I’ve surely lived a hundred lifetimes.” He’d lose a lot of things along the way before truly finding himself. One thing after another unraveled until he found himself living on the streets. “It’s not that I got addicted to drugs and booze and then lost everything. It was actually the exact opposite. I’m no stranger to life and its struggles, but the harder I would fight off the attack, the stronger it became. It was too much this time. I had lost. I finally said ‘I’m dead already, just waiting for my body to catch up.’” He scraped by busking and sleeping on rooftops in cities like Vegas, Phoenix, and San Diego. Eventually he found himself. Cleaned up and clawed out. Dedicating his life and his art to being someone who tells the stories of the forgotten people he’d met along the way. He traveled, playing gigs and being free. New York to Florida to Texas (where he cut the EP for his new Americana/Alt-Country project Boxcar Junkies), and finally back to Nashville. Drawing from influences like Mellencamp, Springsteen, Tom Petty, Rob Thomas, and Wilco, Allen’s Boxcar Junkies put their own spin on a style of music deeply embedded in the American experience. A punchy rhythm section forms the backdrop for deep textured guitars, rootsy Hammond organ, all set against organic overlays of steel guitar and harmonica. The record was produced and performed on by producer Derek Hames and engineer John Shelton of Houston’s Edgewater Music Group. Isaias Gil (Black Flag, Macy Gray, David Lee Roth, Jaci Velasquez) played drums alongside bassist Mark Riddell (Mike Stinson, Charlie and The Regrets, Leon III, Grand Old Grizzly). International guitar legend Gary Hoey guested on the record, while Texas steel extraordinaire Will Van Horn (Lyle Lovett, Robert Ellis) and Houston harmonica great Sonny Boy Terry added their unique flavors as well. Hames provided Hammond, mandolin, guitars, percussion, and background vocals while Shelton played most of the leads. Sony Music Entertainment’s group – The Orchard has picked up the band for distribution of the EP, titled “EST. 1973.” Ultimately, though, the record is focused in on the incisive, plaintive songwriting and smoky baritone vocals Allen himself provides the project. The tapestries of the backing tracks are pleasing, but the music itself is what drives the ship. “I’m trying to make right with my past and help some people along the way that have been pinned down by their circumstances. My hope is that I become invisible and that people focus on the message.” Shining a light into dark places. Music is the medium. Hope is the message.

Memory Verse - Philippians 2:5-8 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! ---------------- Taken from book - When God Rescripts Your Life: Seeing Value, Beauty, and Purpose When Life Is Interrupted; Written by Jaci Velasquez. On this very special holiday episode of Songcraft, we speak with Chris Butler, who wrote the new-wave holiday classic "Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses, as well as three other writers of well-known songs of the season: Randy Brooks, who penned the always-polarizing “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,” Chris Eaton, who wrote Amy Grant’s classic “Breath of Heaven,” and Songwriters Hall of Famer Paul Williams, who is best known for “Rainbow Connection,” but who also wrote all the songs for The Muppet Christmas Carol. Enjoy the conversations, then hear our ultimate holiday playlist, featuring 150 titles and 150 artists with no repeated songs, and no repeated performers. EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE Scott and Paul discuss New Year's resolutions and how their friends at Pearl Snap Studios can help with yours; explore the difference between "sad Christmas" versus "happy Christmas;" and get into a conversation about the specific holiday songs they do and don't like. PART TWO Scott and Paul chat with four songwriters about their perennial Christmas hits. Our guests on this very special holiday episode are... Chris Butler – “Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses (1981) 12:00 mark Chris Butler has led an interesting life. He was a protester at Kent State when the Ohio National Guard opened fire on him and his fellow students in 1970; he earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest recorded pop song in history (the 69-minute “The Devil Glitch”); and he currently lives in Jeffrey Dahmer’s childhood home in Akron, Ohio. As Chris explains, it’s a beautiful house that nobody wanted, so he got a great deal. He is best known, however, for conceptualizing and leading the 1980s new wave group The Waitresses, which found success with “I Know What Boys Like” and their perennial holiday classic, “Christmas Wrapping.” Chris went on to produce Freedy Johnston, Joan Osborne, and others. He continues to record, produce, and release music under the banner of his own Future Fossil Music. But it’s his unlikely holiday hit that remains the songwriting income gift that keeps on giving. Though it’s been recorded by the Spice Girls, Kate Nash, Miranda Cosgrove, Bella Thorne, the Glee cast, and Kylie Minogue with Iggy Pop, the original Waitresses version is still the one you’re most likely to hear each year in the mall. Randy Brooks – “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” by Elmo & Patsty (1979) 31:33 mark Whenever Randy Books is asked how to become a hit songwriter, he always answers, “Do You think if I knew, I’d still be a one-hit wonder after 30 years?” That hit was “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,” one of the most loved and loathed modern holiday classics that also happens to be a multi-platinum seller that has topped Billboard’s holiday singles chart multiple times. It even earned Randy Songwriter of the Year and Song of the Year honors from SESAC, and spawned an animated Christmas special, musical toys, ornaments, greeting cards, apparel, video games, a branded hot chocolate mix, and even a Tesla dashboard app. Though the hit version of “Grandma” was recorded by Elmo & Patsy, the song has been covered by Ray Stevens, Mitch Ryder, The Coasters, and—most recently—by Jimmy Fallon and Dolly Parton. Randy continues to perform with his two bands, and solo at songwriter events all over the country. He is resigned to the fact that, no matter what else he might accomplish in life, he is destined to be remembered for just one thing—kind of like the John Wilkes Boothe of songwriters. Chris Eaton – “Breath of Heaven" by Amy Grant (1992) / "Saviour's Day" by Cliff Richard (1990) 44:55 mark UK-based singer, songwriter and musician Chris Eaton first made his mark as a writer when Sir Cliff Richard began recording his material, including the UK holiday hit “Saviour’s Day,” which reached #1 on the pop chart across the pond. In the US, however, Eaton’s Christmas standard is “Breath of Heaven,” which has been recorded by Amy Grant, Donna Summer, Jessica Simpson, Sara Groves, Vince Gill, and Melissa Manchester. Other artists who’ve recorded songs from Chris’s catalog include Janet Jackson, Sheena Easton, Keith Urban, Patti Austin, and Grover Washington, Jr. His greatest success has been in the Contemporary Christian market, where he has earned BMI awards for radio hits such as “Adore” by Jaci Velasquez, “My Heart Goes Out” by Warren Barfield, and the Rachel Lampa singles “Lift Me Up” and “Live For You.” When Amy Grant released “Breath of Heaven” as the single from her multi-platinum-selling Home for Christmas album, it topped the Christian charts and was named CCM Song of the Year by Billboard magazine. Paul Williams – Songs from The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) 1:05:31 mark Singer, actor, author, recovery advocate, and Songwriters Hall of Famer Paul Williams has penned hits such as “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Rainy Days and Mondays,” and “I Won’t Last a Day Without You” for The Carpenters; “Out in the Country,” “Family of Man” and “An Old Fashioned Love Song” for Three Dog Night; and “You and Me Against the World” for Helen Reddy. His songs have additionally been recorded by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, David Bowie, Tony Bennett, Willie Nelson, REM, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, Sarah Vaughn, Curtis Mayfield, Gwen Stefani, Diana Krall, the Dixie Chicks, and others. Williams is perhaps best known for his movie songs and soundtracks. He and co-writer Barbra Streisand won an Oscar, a Grammy, and a Golden Globe for “Evergreen (Love Theme from A Star is Born),” and he has earned Academy Award nominations for his musical contributions to Cinderella Liberty, Phantom of the Paradise, Bugsy Malone, and The Muppet Movie, which included his now-standard “Rainbow Connection.” Williams later reunited with Jim Henson, penning the songs for the classic children’s film The Muppet Christmas Carol.

Dustin Plantholt’s “Life’s Tough—You Can Be Tougher” podcast this week features Jaci Velasquez, platinum-selling and three-time Grammy nominated artist, American actress, on-air personality and renowned Contemporary Christian and Latin pop singer/songwriter—performing in both English and Spanish. Velasquez was born in Houston, Texas on October 15, 1979 and is of Mexican, Spanish, French, Scottish, and Arab ancestry. She grew up in a lyrical environment where her parents were singers and pastors at an evangelical church. At the age of nine, she began traveling with her father—who by then was a full-time singing evangelist—first singing backup, and then singing solo, and releasing two independent records. It was while on the road that she was discovered by a representative of Myrrh Records. Jaci’s illustrious music career has earned her three Platinum albums, three Gold albums, sixteen No. 1 singles, six more singles in the top 10, seven Dove Awards, three Latin Grammy Award nominations, three Grammy Award nominations, and an American Music Award nomination. She has also graced more than fifty magazine covers, including Teen People, Latin Girl, Teen Beat, Parade, and People and has as appeared in ads for Pepsi, Doritos, and Target. In addition to her remarkable music success, Jaci is an actress and has been featured in five faith-based films since 2009. She has also co-hosted Salem Broadcasting Network’s “The Family Friendly Morning Show with Doug and Jaci Velasquez” with more than 1.5 million daily listeners. On October 8, 2019 Jaci released her memoir, When God Rescripts Your Life: Seeing Value, Beauty and Purpose When Life Is Interrupted, sharing how she overcame the challenges of early fame and a failed marriage and trusted God to turn her broken pieces into priceless treasures. After the release of her first album at the awkward age of sixteen, Jaci Velasquez found sudden fame. Five of the songs reached number one, and she became the first and fastest-selling solo artist in Christian music history to reach gold status with a debut album. Despite her initial success, however, her career stalled, and her young marriage ended quickly, leaving her feeling broken, used up, and sometimes useless. But God repurposed those experiences for a greater plan as her renewed faith carried her through a resurrected career, the adventures of a second marriage, and the ups-and-downs of being a wife and mother of two boys, including one diagnosed with autism. Through a blend of personal narrative, practical strategies, and the truth of God's word, Jaci invites readers to rewrite their own stories and dream new dreams for their lives. Her life-transforming insights will guide readers in not only overcoming challenges, wrong turns, and often painful circumstances, but also in growing from those experiences and becoming equipped and empowered to help others. In addition to writing, recording, touring and acting, Jaci serves as an advocate for autism awareness. Join Dustin and Jaci for a heartfelt conversation on life’s numerous twists and turns and hear how Jaci’s faith helped her navigate the curvy roads and grow stronger along the way. “I may not know what to do or what the future holds,” Jaci says, “but I trust that God does.”

You know how people who get famous at a young age tend to go insane? Some don't. Jaci started charting #1 at age 17, yet you're hearing her here, not on TMZ, which is a good indicator. How did she do it? God, family, and other things antithetical to the poisonous Hollywood lifestyle. My guest for The Happy Hour # 266 is Jaci Velasquez. Jaci released her first album at just 16 years old and is a multi-platinum selling, Grammy nominated artist as well as author, actress, wife, and momma to two boys, Zealand and Soren. Her newest book When God Rescripts Your life: Seeing Value, Beauty, and Purpose When Life is Interrupted releases this week! Jaci and I start off the show talking about what makes us nervous, and Jaci shares how she has learned to pause, let go of control, and ask the Holy Spirit to do the work. You'll also hear how much Jaci loves being involved at her boys' schools because you guys, she was always on the road and never got to experience it! Jaci opens up about what it was like to start recording so young, and reaching her darkest place where she felt the only option was to run away. I think we can all relate when Jaci speaks about God rescripting life in ways we hadn't planned or expected such as learning what were God dreams vs. "me" dreams. In the last part of the show we talk about trust, and I know you will love and be so, so encouraged that God cares about the big things and the small things when you hear her story of the bus driver Mr. Fred. To kick off our Nashville series, we start with none other than the multi-platinum-selling, Grammy-nominated, seven-Dove-Award-winning artist Jaci Velasquez. Jaci released her first album at the age of sixteen and found sudden fame. She became the first and fastest-selling solo artist in Christian music history to reach gold status with a debut album. But despite all the successes in her life, she’s also walked some hard roads in her career and personal life that she shares with us today. She’s married to Nic, and they’re raising two sons, Zealand and Soren. Jaci speaks candidly about the joys and hardships of raising her son Zealand, who has autism. She also has a great word for all of us about the joy in watching God rescript our lives. Jaci Velasquez Book: When God Rescripts Your Life

What does live music production have to do with how you write your songs? According to the most successful live music producer in the business for over 25 years and counting, Tom Jackson, the two are completely intertwined. He believes that your ability to think about how songs create “moments” in live shows will dramatically increase your chances of having your songs recorded and used by popular artists. He’s worked with Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendez, Jordan Sparks, Jaci Velasquez, Francesca Battistelli, LeCrae, The Band Perry, Jason Crabb, Casting Crowns, Newsong, and many more. Connecting your songs to artists and audiences is your first priority as an independent songwriter. In his work with such artists as Taylor Swift and Shawn Mendez, Jackson understands the power of songs and how they can be used to create powerful live performances. In this episode, John Chisum sits down with Tom and addresses topics such as: The power of persistence in songwriting and performing for optimum success The secrets of longevity in music How “planned spontaneity” is key to live shows and songwriting The philosophy for creating “moments” in your songs for live performances Tom’s four-fold method for working with artists to bring out their best performance and how you can use it, too Why a vision for your show, service, and song is vital to success The unspoken negative signals you’re constantly sending to your audience and how to change them Where the best ideas for performance and songs come from Tools for singers and songwriters to interact with your audience effectively Using dynamics to create anticipation in your songs and performance Bringing your personality to your songs and performance through themes and characters Why a song is like a “mini-movie” How to give your audience permission to think and be present with you in your songs And so much more… Connect with Tom Jackson on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/onstagesuccess/ and check out his book Tom Jackson’s Live Music Method on Amazon.com at https://www.amazon.com/Tom-Jacksons-Live-Music-Method/dp/1936417685/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500007558&sr=8-1&keywords=tom+jackson+live+music+method. Webster's Dictionary defines the word "potential" as - capable of being, but not yet in existence. This definition alone can best describe the life-journey of Calvin Nowell. Pursuing purpose and destiny has been the path Calvin Nowell has taken for most of his life. Knowing it was there but not understanding how to manifest it was the question he asked for years. Eventually, he decided to start somewhere. On this path, there were a few obstacles that presented itself. One of the biggest hurdles Calvin has overcome was his struggle with his weight. Calvin unfortunately weighed over 450lbs. At six foot four he was displaying a 60-inch waist and a coat size of 64/66L. Although he weighed a lot physically, the emotional weight seemed to outweigh the pounds. Fear and insecurity were the driving forces behind his struggle. However, there was always an inner knowing that he wasn't going to be overweight if given the chance to record a CD. After losing over 215lbs and many layers of emotional weight, Calvin has started somewhere on the journey to share his experience with everyone. "I always felt that God told me that he would bless whatever I put my hands to, but I had the problem of not putting my hands to anything. At the core of the title cut, "Start Somewhere", co-written and produced with veteran producer Mark Heimmerman, the theme of procrastination runs throughout the song. "It is a message that I believe every person can benefit from. I have a real desire to see people lose the weight that is holding them back, whether it is physical, spiritual, or emotional. We all have an appetite out of control that is ultimately weighing us down Hebrews 12:1 says it best, "Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." "One thing that I tell people is that I lost the weight from the inside out and not the outside out in." With a heart and passion for pursuing the presence of God, a deeper relationship with Christ was the only way out of Nowell's struggle. What seemed to be his misery has amazingly evolved into ministry. Calvin began leading worship throughout his journey and has developed a special knack for worship. With the musical influences from Fred Hammond, India.Arie, Michael W. Smith, CeCe Winans, Calvin has developed a unique cross-cultural sound. Since the door of "potential" has been opened, Calvin is a gifted singer/songwriter living in Franklin, TN. All of the songs from Start Somewhere were co-written and co-produced by Calvin. He has toured and recorded with some of today's top artists and worship leaders including, Michael W. Smith, Nicole C. Mullen, Israel Houghton, Katinas, Livingston Taylor, Helen Baylor, Vicky Yohe, Geron Davis, and Lynda Randle. Calvin has appeared on many television and video outlets including, ABC's Good Morning America, TBN's "Praise The Lord", TCT Alive, Pax TV, The Dove Awards, Michael W. Smith's Worship DVD.Outside of music, Calvin is a professional motivational speaker and workshop facilitator. Calvin has appeared on national television shows with Dr. Don Colbert (Celebrity health professional/author) as his special guest. Calvin has spoken at major corporate arena events highlighting his weigh loss testimony. Calvin has received endorsements from other celebrities, such NBA player, Allan Houston; National recording artist, Kirk Whalum; National recording artist, Nicole C. Mullen, Producers Mark Heimmerman (dc Talk, Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant) and Chris Harris (CeCe Winans, Jaci Velasquez, Anointed), and Evangelist/motivational speaker, James Ryle (Board Founder of Promise Keepers).Start Somewhere, his debut EP mixes heartfelt worship with elements of Pop and RB. Nowell consistently proves to be one of the few worship leader/songwriter in modern times with the ability to cross multiple music genres and generations while retaining true authenticity at each one. "There are many styles of music that I write and sing. However, I choose to display the various different sounds but use the same theme of worship." This project features the mainstream inspirational song, "Truth and Start Somewhere", worship ballads, "Unrestrained and Open My Heart" as well as Calvin's personal testimony that has inspired millions. There's only one quote that can best sum up Calvin's journey and it is from St. Francis of Assisi, "Start with what's necessary, then what's possible, and suddenly you're doing the impossible." Start Somewhere and change the weigh you are!We had the privilege of sitting down with Calvin and listening to his incredible story and where his journey has brought him thus far. He's an extremely gifted and talented individual with a personality that lights up a room. We are grateful to call him a friend and excited for the new projects he's working on!To find out more information about Calvin Nowell visit:www.calvinnowell.comwww.facebook.com/calvinnowellmusicwww.twitter.com/calvinnowell See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
