Send us a textIt is truly hard to believe that we are approaching the 30th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing. As many of you are well aware at this point, Pastor Harris, was the pastor of First United Methodist Church, which is situated directly east of the OKC bombing site.  Pastor Harris was at the church that day, and we have shared his story both in audio podcast as well as video on our YouTube channel.  However, in this episode we will hear from Kris Skinner, a cherished family friend and a former employee of First Church that was there meeting with Pastor Harris at the moment the bomb went off on that day that for many has been frozen in time.As a reminder, we have published several OKC Bombing related episodes over the life of this podcast. Four that I will mention specifically. There is episode 50 which features the sermon Pastor Harris delivered April 16th 1995, just three days before the bombing, this would be the last sermon that would be delivered in that 100 year old sanctuary. In episode 51 we hear from Pastor Harris as he tells his story of the day of the bombing. In episode 52 we feature an interview we had with OKC Bombing Survivor, Arlene Blanchard who was in the Murrah Building when the bomb went off. Arlene had attended “Loves & Fishes”, a lunch Bible Study that First Church facilitated and Pastor Harris taught for many years. In this discussion with Arlene, she reveals one word that Pastor Harris taught on that gave her the strength to persevere. And finally, in episode #100 we feature the story of a surprise concert that Rich Mullins himself gifted the people of First United Methodist Church.Support the show

QUOTES FOR REFLECTION“He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.”~Revelation 3:21 “Take my love; my Lord, I pourat thy feet its treasure store.Take myself, and I will beever, only, all for thee, ever, only, all for thee.”~“Take My Life And Let it Be” by Frances Ridley Havergal, 1874 “Well, sometimes my life just don't make sense at allWhen the mountains look so bigAnd my faith just seems so small So hold me, Jesus, ‘cause I'm shaking like a leafYou have been King of my gloryWon't you be my Prince of Peace?”~“Hold Me Jesus” by Rich Mullins, 1993 “But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.”~Romans 8:37SERMON PASSAGEHebrews 3:1-19 (ESV) 1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house. 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope. 7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,  “Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,      on the day of testing in the wilderness, 9 where your fathers put me to the test       and saw my works for forty years. 10 Therefore I was provoked with that generation,  and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;   they have not known my ways.' 11 As I swore in my wrath,   ‘They shall not enter my rest.'” 12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said,  “Today, if you hear his voice,   do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”16 For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

In this conversation, Russ Ramsey talks about the power of art, beauty, and storytelling - and how they can help us make sense of the brokenness in our world. Russ is the author of books like "Rembrandt is in the Wind" and "Van Gogh Has a Broken Heart," where he dives into the lives and works of these iconic artists. And what he uncovers is so much more than just the paintings themselves. It's about the human experience - the joy, the suffering, the hope that these artists poured into their art. We talk about how engaging with beauty and art, can actually be a window into understanding the glory of God. And how even in the midst of tragedy and heartbreak, art can help us find language for our own struggles and emotions. Russ also shares some incredible stories behind famous works of art - like the Mona Lisa and why it became so famous. Spoiler alert: it's not because of the painting itself! So get ready for a rich, thought-provoking conversation about the intersection of faith, art, and the human experience. Russ has so much wisdom to share, so join us. Interview with Staff What jobs have you held outside of ministry if any? What is the thing you hope for the people who serve in your ministry? What is one helpful thing you wish people knew about what goes on behind the scenes in ministry? Why do you do this? What in the world are you thinking - you could make more money in the business world, you could get insurance paid for you, you could be building up retirement. So, why do ministry? What was it that put the "why" in you? OPENING ILLUSTRATION: Give it up for our team!  Thank you guys for all you do for our church! You know, Ministry is a weird job. I've had calls at 2 in the morning from a kid whose mom just got thrown through a window and he needed me to talk him down from killing his stepdad.  I've woken up to a call to come over to someone's house and counsel them in the most dire of situations. I have sat by the bed of the dying and cared for them and met with countless couples who are considering throwing in the towel on their marriage.  On top of that we have daily concern for the spiritual life of those God has stewarded us with, even when they don't always personally care or think about it themselves. My job specifically I have to be able to lead with the business acumen of a CEO, be available for one-on-one counseling, be able to study like a scholar or professor, be able to get up and speak like a motivational speaker, be a manager and lead meetings, be humble, have a character that matters, be spiritually full to give to others who are spiritually hungry, be able to read a spreadsheet and talk to people who have never seen a spreadsheet. As a pastor, there are very few people you can actually be yourself with - most people feel like they can bear that burden, but the moment they find out their pastor struggles, they walk away.  It's extremely lonely. Why do we do it? Why would anyone choose ministry? ILLUSTRATION: Literally a few years back, before coming to Harmony, my brother called me and told me he was bummed because his Christmas bonus was going to be less that year. When he told me what the bonus would be, it hit me that his bonus was more than my entire salary for the year. Oof, that's tough… So, why would we do this? Why choose it? I chose this because I want to take as many people as I possibly can with me. b I want to see as many people as I can, find Jesus, and become His disciples.  Reminds me of the parable of the talents, you know the parable right? A landowner gives a few of his servants bags of gold, one gets 5, one gets 3, and one gets one bag of gold.  When the master comes back he finds out the guys that got 5 & 3 bags had invested it and doubled their money, but the other guy took his one bag and buried it.  The master berates him for just burying his gold instead of putting it to work for him.   Look, at the end of your life when you stand before Jesus, he's not going to ask you what cars you owned, or how big your house was. He's not going to ask how many subscribers you had to your YouTube channel or TickTock or how many days of vacation you didn't use. He's going to ask you one question, “What did you do with what you had for the Kingdom” You don't need to do what I do or Amber does. What you need to do is look at what you've been given and use it for the Kingdom. CLOSING ILLUSTRATION: My favorite musician of all time was Rich Mullins - he was a Christian artist in the 90s who died tragically.  Rich had a passion for Native Americans and decided at some point to step away from his music career to be a missionary in New Mexico to the Navajo Indians. Rich tried it but was really struggling, it wasn't going like he thought it would.  He called his uncle and was talking to him and his uncle said, “Rich, you're not a very good missionary, but you are really good at making money.  Why aren't you making money and giving it to those who are good at being missionaries”  The reason I like Rich Mullins is not because he was a great musician, although he has some rich lyrics.  The reason I like him is because he decided he would be only be paid the average working man's salary and gave the rest of his money away.  Rich realized his job was to take as many with him as he could - not to hoard it all.  What are you good at you could use for the Kingdom? Are you good with kids? We need people in our kids ministry and student ministry. Are you someone people want to be around? Invite them to church with you. Are you good at making money? Redirect that to the Kingdom. You know, one of the biggest problems I think in Christianity is we professionalized it. Ephesians 4:11-13 11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Look, Jesus didn't give me or our staff to do the ministry by ourselves b He gave us -> to equip you -> to do the works of service Today, I want to call you to something practical - we have this board out in the lobby that shows the holes in ministry that need to be filled.  We want you to pray and then go and fill those spots, to find your why, and to give it all for the Kingdom.

Hans Gruber and the Die Hards came out of the pandemic swinging and ready to take over the ska scene. The band formed in 2014 in Austin, Texas, went through some lineup changes (A big lineup change a few years ago!) and then released their excellent record, With A Vengence, in May 2022 on SPI Records. They want to get the word out and have been touring as much as possible. The group mixes ska with furious hardcore, cumbia, silly singalongs, and whatever else they feel like throwing in the mix. And they bring a stage show filled to the brim with bizarre antics that involve sock puppets, conga lines, copious guest horns and exercise classes. Today we speak with three members of the group: Chris Thompson, Rosey Armstrong and Kurt Armstrong. We talk about Die Hard lore, and whether the film is in fact a remake of A Christmas Carol. We talk about their long tours and the methods they employ to save money (Forage for nuts in the forest, get free cheese from members of The Best of the Worst). We also talk about Kurt's blackeye and why the band members are the undisputed Gods of Dairy. We also talk about the squirrels in Adam's backyard and Christian rock groups like Lust Control, DC Talk, One Bad Pig and Rich Mullins. We talk about Hans' experience being on the Ska Parade tour a few years back. And they talk about The Slackers, Slackfest and missing veggie trays. Plus we talk about a very controversial topic: Kurt's underwear Support the show

Welcome to an intriguing episode which starts with a journey through the unusual home of Ray Comfort as he, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar share thoughts on materialism, generosity, and so much more. Ray is known for some eccentric home adventures, which includes turning on the TV with a fishing tackle, developing a unique watering system for his backyard birds, and planning to wallpaper his house with the Gospel of John. These quirky tales promise an engaging and thought-provoking listen.Diving deeper, Ray and the guys venture into the complex realm of materialism and their attempts to unshackle themselves from the chains of covetousness which were so strong and prevalent while they were still unsaved. Moreover, Ray and E.Z. tease their fellow podcasters, Oscar and Mark, about their potential materialistic tendencies, adding a dash of humor to a serious conversation.Proceeding further into the discussion, the guys touch upon topics like contentment vs. love of money, which the Bible tells us is the root of all evil. Insight is borrowed from individuals like Jim Carrey and Rich Mullins to better understand how to be liberated from materialism. The discussion continues as they examine materialism's influence on individuals' lives and the importance of generosity. Listeners are invited to scrutinize how social media is designed to induce worldly longing, creating envy in online followers. This conversation enables each of us to appreciate the blessings believers receive and the significance of not placing our trust in uncertain riches. Love shown through generosity is underscored as a key solution to materialism, prompting us to utilize our possessions for giving and spreading kindness. The guys reflect on the challenges faced by the rich young ruler and how it's crucial to be ready to do what is right because it is right. Mark's reminder that we must drop everything to embrace Jesus and John Piper's wisdom about the futility of material comforts beautifully wraps up this enlightening conversation. In conclusion, this episode offers a blend of humor, wisdom, and profound insights that can potentially alter the way we view life. It urges us to reflect on our actions, desires, and the driving forces behind them. So let's focus on what truly matters and cultivate a lifestyle driven by love, generosity, and contentment. Thanks for listening! Today is another example of why I love podcasting: it gives me opportunities to have conversations with amazing people. Then I get to share those conversations with you! In the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, I listened to a lot of contemporary Christian music, otherwise known as CCM. If you remember back in the days before streaming took over the world, we had these little things called “liner notes,” which contained the songs, lyrics, musicians, and others involved in the making of an album. One of the names I regularly saw was Jimmy Abegg, also known as Jimmy A. He was not only active as a musician on many albums, but also as a photographer who took photographs for many contemporary Christian music album covers. For those of you familiar with CCM, you might recognize Jimmy from his days as the guitar player in the Charlie Peacock trio, as well as one of the players in Rich Mullins' Ragamuffins. Today I get to bring you a conversation with Mr. Abegg, and I hope that it will inspire you as it did me! Here's a snippet of Jimmy's bio from his website: “In 1989, a career in music led me and my young family to Nashville, Tennessee. Today, we still call Nashville home and I am proud to say that the years have been generous and full. I have been given so many opportunities to provide for my family and care for others while creating things I love. Be it, playing music on the road, recording in the studio, making fine art, showing in galleries, designing record packaging, photographing musicians, writing music, or mentoring others on all of the above; my life of creativity has explored many mediums. Whether abstract or figurative, my painting continues the tendency towards curiosity, whimsy and simple beauty, with a healthy dose of train-hopping, carefree adventure.” Jimmy suffers from macular degeneration, which has taken away the majority of his sight, but he still makes art and music. Interestingly, he says that some of his favorite pieces have been created during this period of his life. In this conversation, Jimmy and I talk about songwriting, collaboration, artwork, and creative habits, among other topics. One of my favorite quotes from this conversation is when Jimmy gave advice for people trying to figure out their path in life. He said, “Try to quit what you're doing. If you can't stop, maybe you should be doing that.” I also want to give a shout-out to the kind and generous Cindy Morgan, who thoughtfully connected me with Jimmy! * * * Today's episode is sponsored by Vellum, the go-to book formatting software for indie authors who care about creating beautiful ebooks and print books. Hey, it's Mike Henry with Follower of One and today's passage, still in the Old Testament, Habakkuk 2:4, "Behold, as for the proud one, His soul is not right within him, but the righteous will live by his faith." I love the last phrase in that verse. I love an old Rich Mullins song that he wrote that was about this verse: The Just Shall Live.   And, I want to talk today about how we get right with God. I think it's interesting because I always thought that getting right with God meant that I had to live according to a bunch of rules. I had to check the boxes and do the right things. I had to be baptized and go to church and do this and do that.   And I love the way now that I think about this verse, because I think Jesus has flipped it in my mind. When I live by faith, I do what Jesus says. There are days when Jesus tells me I need to go to church, or I need to tell the truth, or I need not to eat that extra dessert. When I'm living by faith, I listen to Jesus. I follow him. I am a Follower of One.    When I'm living by faith, I'm righteous. I'm doing the things that Jesus would have me do. I'm following Him and I'm in line with Him. I'm in the Jesus groove, doing the things that Jesus would have me do. It's not that I'm trying to obey a certain set of rules. I'm trying to conform my life to the direction set for it by my Creator, by the person who gave me life and who put me here. And we're also told in Ephesians 2:10 that He gives each of us a job to do, that He created us for good works that He prepared beforehand, that we would walk in them. "Behold as for the proud one," the one who goes his own way, which is what I tend to do.   I can be one of the most arrogant, proud people I know, and when I do, my soul is not right within me. I'm wrong, I'm broken, I'm off track. I'm out of the groove. I'm not operating according to those things that I was created to do. But when I live by faith, when I put my trust in Jesus and I do what He tells me to do on a moment by moment basis, I'm righteous. That's how you get right with God. It's not about doing the things, the rules that other people cast on you, it's about following and obeying Jesus.    Today in our workplaces, I would like to challenge us. Today, let's listen to God, ask him what He would have us do. Remember, our first prayer is to punch in. Here I am lord, put me to work. Let's punch in and ask him to show us what He would have us do for the people that we will interact with today. And then when we hear a word from him, when we get an idea, if you pray and all of the sudden you get this wild idea, you can pretty much bet it was Jesus. If that wild idea lines up with scripture, find a way to do it, find a way to solve for that.   Whatever idea came into your brain, find a way to implement it. You can believe that you're following Jesus. You're living by faith, living by trusting Him. Listen also to other believers in your life, attend church and listen to the leadership of your church. Have other Christians who are involved, and read the scripture.   But when we talk to Jesus and He gives us ideas, let's find ways to do them. Today, give away a little bit of your life to the people that you work with. Ask Him, ask God to show you what to do, and then do it. Thanks for being a marketplace minister. And thank you for following Jesus at work for living by your faith.   That makes us righteous. Let's do that today so that Jesus will be visible in our world. Thanks very much.

Influential pastor, author, and apologist, Tim Keller, passed away last week. We reflect on Keller's ministry and wonder who is filling the shoes of the Christian giants we've lost. A new book about poverty says that the U.S. spends more on welfare than any other country except France, but the majority goes to help the wealthy and middle-class rather than the poor. Why aren't we doing more to end poverty, and is our view of the Bible to blame? Then, it's been 25 years since Rich Mullins died. Skye talks to Mullins' friend James Bryan Smith about the songwriter's inspiring life and legacy. Plus, Matthew Soerens shares some good news from the Southern border.   Patreon Bonus:  Holy Post Office - What do you do when the perfect church doesn't exist? After the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995, Rich Mullins contacted First United Methodist Church after their church building had been destroyed.  He surprised the congregation on Father's Day that June with a concert they would never forget.  Recent Hi8 video footage was found of this day and we are very excited to share it with those that remember that day, and those who miss Rich as much as we do who may want to see a very special performance of his that shined so brightly in Oklahoma City in such a dark time. For more personalized stories and details of this awesome day, listen to Episode #100 of the Relational Grace Podcast.  You can also listen online at RelationalGracePodcast.com.Support the show
