We're selling out ONCE AGAIN with Ari Aster's controversial neo-western thriller black comedy EDDINGTON, starring Joaquin Phoenix as sheriff Joe Cross, who runs for mayor against Pedro Pascal's Ted Garcia in a small New Mexico town during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. It's sometimes uncomfortable, occasionally hilarious, and has some real bite - though some audiences didn't know what to make of it. On this episode we go through some recent watches, discuss the Ari Aster films we've seen so far, and then have the DEFINITIVE conversation about EDDINGTON (with some warning before any spoiler talk). Enjoy! The post Episode 288 – Cinema Smorgasbord Sells Out – Eddington (2025) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

What transforms an ordinary person into someone extraordinary? On this Shavuos-themed episode, we dive deep into the holiday's multifaceted spiritual landscape through ten distinct perspectives that reveal why this festival matters profoundly to your life.Shavuos isn't merely about cheesecake and all-night learning—it's about how Torah fundamentally transforms human identity. As Rabbi Yosef beautifully expressed, "Without this day, how many 'Joes' would there be in the marketplace?" Torah elevates us from being ordinary to extraordinary, giving us purpose and direction in an otherwise meaningless existence. We explore the holiday's multiple names (Chag HaKatzir, Chag HaShavuos, Chag HaBikurim, and Atzeres), each revealing a different dimension of its significance. We examine why the holiday's offering of leavened bread represents our evolution from animal-like instinct to true human consciousness through free will—a powerful counterargument to modern deterministic thinking that claims "we have no choice" in our actions.Perhaps most movingly, we discuss how Ruth's story exemplifies that Torah is acquired through sacrifice and commitment, and how Shavuos completes what Pesach began—showing that freedom without purpose leads nowhere. We also tackle fascinating questions about Jewish unity, the paradox of choice and coercion at Sinai, and practical perspectives on everything from the proper blessings for cheesecake to whether we should stand during the reading of the Ten Commandments. This episode culminates in a heartfelt call to action: to recite the words "Ki Heim Chayeinu" (For they are our life) in the evening prayer with renewed enthusiasm, truly internalizing that Torah isn't just something we study—it's the essence of our existence, giving meaning and purpose to everything we do. Listen, be inspired, and transform your Shavuos from ritual observance to spiritual revival.ArtscrollDiscover and enjoy your favorite books from Artscroll! In this episode we answer emails from Corn Pop, Dustin and Jim. We discuss annuities for elderly parents, TIPS ladders in retirement, REITs in small cap value funds, currency speculation, the GDE fund (again) and an aggressive portfolio construction.Link:Interview of Michael Kitces Re Problems With TIPS Ladders: Michael Kitces: How Higher Yields Affect Asset Allocation and Retirement Planning | MorningstarBreathless and Promotional AI-Bot Summary:Dive into the mailbag as Frank tackles complex investment questions with his signature blend of expertise and pop culture references. This episode unpacks several critical financial planning dilemmas that challenge conventional wisdom.First, Frank examines when annuities make sense for elderly parents, explaining how health prospects and longevity expectations should guide this decision. For those likely to outlive actuarial tables, annuities can provide financial value and simplify management—but they're far from universally beneficial. Frank introduces Qualified Longevity Annuity Contracts (QLACs) as a strategic option for those concerned about funding long-term care in their later years. The conversation shifts to a provocative take on TIPS ladders, with Frank describing long-term ladders as "a flex for hoarders" rather than necessary financial tools. He argues these complicated structures work best for defined periods with specific purposes—like bridging to Social Security—not as decades-long income vehicles that will inevitably be either too long or too short for your actual lifespan.Currency speculation, Bitcoin, and aggressive portfolio construction round out the episode's explorations. Frank explains how currency exposure already exists implicitly in international stocks and gold without dedicated speculation, evaluates an aggressive portfolio with substantial Bitcoin allocation, and questions whether dividend stocks belong in accumulation strategies.Throughout, Frank balances technical analysis with practical wisdom, reminding listeners that personalized investment approaches must account for individual circumstances rather than following generic advice. Whether you're managing a retirement portfolio or building wealth, you'll gain valuable perspective on how the finest investment strategies align with your actual needs rather than theoretical ideals.Want your questions answered on a future episode? We can feel ourselves rotting on a brand new episode of Cinema Smorgasbord Sells Out covering Cronenberg's latest - and perhaps most personal - work THE SHROUDS from 2024. Vincent Cassel stars as Karsh, a businessman who has developed a technology called a shroud, which allows people to view the corpses of their loved ones after they have been buried. After a targeted attack of his graveyard (including the grave of his late wife), Karsh - with the help of his late wife's sister and her ex-husband - starts to investigate the motivation behind the attack. It's dark, oppressive, oddly funny and awfully odd, but is it great? Let's discuss! The post Episode 268 – Cinema Smorgasbord Sells Out – The Shrouds (2024) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

Millennials saw their parents work for 40 straight years, and many are considering taking some time off from work, aka taking sabbaticals. Again, Lauren and her guest discuss the book Die with Zero. Sabbaticals allow you to travel, catch up on life tasks, re-evaluate life choices, and alleviate burnout. They're usually 3 months to 1 year long. A mini retirement, on the other hand, can last years, and you may be making some income during that time, perhaps by doing contract work. At the end of the day, money is a tool, and it doesn't make sense to accumulate for the sake of accumulation. You're a whole person outside of your job. And a sabbatical can help you remember that. If you're feeling uneasy about your life path, consider planning for and taking a sabbatical. If you liked this episode, you'll also like episode 185: A Smorgasbord of Personal Finance Tips. How do you solve a problem like ANORA, the recent Best Picture Oscar winner directed by problematic(?) fav Sean Baker? It seems like everyone has an opinion on the film (about a young sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch), so why not add OURS into the mix? We get down and dirty with some of the controversies surrounding the film, but mostly just talk about what we liked and didn't like about the film like good little critics. ENJOY!
