Spring is in the air, and it's time to open the windows, grab the cleaning supplies and get 'er done--with the help of our guest Joy Williams. Joy has developed a whole series of step-by-step guides to help kids (and adults) learn how to clean every room in the house. I've been meaning to try them for years, and this is finally our year. This will be our main family experiment for April and I'm excited to kick it off with this episode. We'll talk about why it's important for kids to help around the house, how to teach them to do so, and of course we'll have some experiments for you to try. Send us a textTo sign up for the November 16th virtual LYRIC WRITING WORKSHOP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1070697919299?aff=oddtdtcreatorMy guest today is New England based singer/songwriter Jesse Terry. Before I introduce him I wanted to let you know that on Saturday Nov. 16th I am offering a virtual 3 hour songwriting workshop. There are a few spaces left and you can sign up through the show notes or on my website at scarletvkeys.comThis workshop will be very process oriented focused on lyric writing. You will be doing a lot of small writing exercises to sharpen your lyric writing skills. We will work on metaphor, avoiding cliche's and literary devices used by some of the best writers.Today we will talk about his writing process, crowd funding an album with your super fans and some of the reasons he writes such beautiful melodies. He's going to play a few song off of his new record Arcadia, released Oct. 4. And this might just be his best record yet. It's rooted in rhythmic rock & roll and sharp songwriting, Arcadia marks a turning point in Jesse Terry's career. It's the seventh original album from an award-winning musician who's spent much of the past decade on the move, playing 150 shows annually, bouncing between solo performances and full-band gigs. Arcadia captures both sides of that musical personality, finding room for amplified anthems one moment and intimate moments the next, showcasing just how wide Terry's reach can be. Arcadia is layered with dueling electric guitars, stacked vocal harmonies, and heartland hooks, all supplied by instrumentalists like Ethan Ballinger (Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack), Ross McReynolds (Katie Pruitt, Becca Mancari), Sam Howard (Molly Tuttle, Joy Williams), Juan Solorzano (Ruston Kelly, Parker Millsap), and Danny Mitchell (Rodney Crowell, Anderson East). It's a big, bold sound — the sort of record that begs to be played in the car, windows rolled down, driving down the fast lane toward some new horizon. At the center of that sound is the craft Terry has been sharpening since his years in Nashville, back when he composed songs for others as a staff writer on Music Row. A grand-prize winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, Terry established himself as a top-shelf.Jesse's new record: https://open.spotify.com/album/5lpXAMZDC4hqAU0t2AV29Z?si=SpFXPTHsSL-BidKeOtVbgghttps://www.jesseterrymusic.com/Become a podcast member:Join the "What's in a Song" membership community:https://buymeacoffee.com/scarlet.keysMixed by Peter Sykes: https://www.petersykesmusic.com/Otto Gross: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMnxx19QD-vxD4wnYGTn3JwScarlet's website:https://www.scarletkeys.comScarlet's instagram: https://www.instagram.com/scarletkeysofficial/To purchase Scarlet Keys' book "The Craft of Songwriting:https://www.amazon.com/Craft-Songwriting-Music-Meaning-Emotion/dp/0876391927/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2PPScarlet's website: https://www.scarletkeys.comScarlet's instagram: https://www.instagram.com/scarletkeysofficial/To purchase Scarlet Keys' book "The Craft of Songwriting:https://www.amazon.com/Craft-Songwriting-Music-Meaning-Emotion/dp/0876391927/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2PP55NU6E9ST6&keywords=the+craft+of+songwriting&qid=1659573139&sprefix=the+craft+of+songwritin%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-1

One person was killed, and four others were injured after gunfire broke out at the West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn on Monday afternoon. Despite the NYPD's efforts to increase security at one of the city's largest parades, the shooting left both the NYPD and the mayor on the defensive. This week, NY1's Errol Louis was joined by L. Joy Williams, the president of the Brooklyn NAACP and Brian Saunders, the president of the Community Council at the NYPD's 77th Precinct, where the shooting occurred. They both discussed what could be done to prevent future tragedies and the NYPD's new strategies this year. Errol was also joined by NY1 political reporter Dan Rivoli, who covered the NYPD press conference about the shooting. In that decade, he produced nearly 50 albums for other artists, and was named the Gospel Music Association's Producer of the Year for three consecutive years. The long list of artists he has produced includes Nicole Nordeman, David Crowder, Holly Williams, The Lone Bellow, Al Green, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

John Paul White is an amzing performer, singer, songwriter and studio nerd who lives in Florence, Alabama and is known by many for all his amazing work with his Grammy-winning band The Civil Wars. John Paul has also worked as a professional songwriter, and runs a studio and a label called Single Lock Records. This all goes down in Florence, which is part of the 3 cities known as The Shoals, or as us music nerds know it as, Muscle Shoals. This small, almost rural area unbelievably housed 2 amazing studios where some of the greatest soul music of all time was recorded - Fame, and Muscle Shoals Sound. Those 2 studios are still standing today and really are amazing places to visit! John Paul continues that tradition by carving out his own scene in the very same area today. He grew up in a small town in Tennessee, very close to Florence, and during his college days, started playing gigs in bands and on his own. He eventually discovered that he loved songwriting, especially as a vehicle to sing and perform. That led to him recording an album with his band, and eventually a solo album called "The Long Goodbye". But it was at a songwriting workshop that he was paired up with the already successful Joy Williams - they hit it off and immediately started working on music that became The Civil Wars. Their debut album, "Barton Hollow", came out in 2011 and was a huge success, winning a Grammy the following year. They worked mostly with producer Charlie Peacock, but also with others like T-Bone Burnett and Rick Rubin, which we get into today as well. The Civil Wars came to a crashing halt in 2013, and John Paul has since re-started his solo career, the label and now the studio. His albums "Beulah", and the most recent "The Hurting Kind" are both stellar records to check out. They're very different and sonically really deep and interesting. It was great to speak with John Paul about all of these projects, his creative process and what he's up to these days. You can follow him for any shows, and news on albums he's making or producing for others at johnpaulwhite.com - Enjoy my conversation with John Paul White! If you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the show with a donation or Patreon subscriptionThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.comYour fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at www.stevedawson.ca Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/mmasspodcast. In her debut short story collection, Sidle Creek (Melville House, 2023), Jolene McIlwain skillfully interrogates the myths and stereotypes of the mining, mill, and farming towns where she grew up. With stories that take place in diners and dive bars, town halls and bait shops, McIlwain's writing explores themes of class, work, health, and trauma, and the unexpected human connections of small, close-knit communities. All the while, the wild beauty of the natural world weaves its way in, a source of the town's livelihood – and vulnerable to natural resource exploitation. With an alchemic blend of taut prose, gorgeous imagery, and deep sensitivity for all of the living beings within its pages, Sidle Creek will sit snugly on bookshelves between Annie Proulx, Joy Williams, and Louise Erdrich. I'm a baby boomer. I know that's not necessarily a good thing to publicly announce, but I'm not about to start lying about my age now. That said, I am among the last of the Boomers, having been born in November of 1959. If you wonder why it matters, you probably should read THE AFTERMATH: THE LAST DAYS OF THE BABY BOOM AND THE FUTURE OF POWER IN AMERICA, the new book from Washington Post columnist Philip Bump. He's today's guest, and I'm looking forward to a fascinating conversation. Hopefully the gremlins have been exorcised from this studio. Yesterday was a rough day, not only due to the myriad of technical issues that doomed the show, but it was also the 5th anniversary of the Parkland shooting (my community), and I'm still processing the news of the death of a member of our community here at the show, Joy Williams. And the shooting at Michigan State, and it just never ends... But today, we'll go boom.... Baby Boom, that is.
We have a lot to talk about today. I was actually in a fun, snarky mood until about an hour ago when I got a phone call from the husband of a long-time listener, Joy Williams. Joy died on Friday. She had been battling cancer and liver failure, and it seems that the liver failure was what did her in We've developed a real community here . You can see it in action in the chat room every day during the show, so today will be a wake, of sorts. I'm sure we'll hear from some of Joy's friends today... the phones are open for that purpose at 954-889-6410. We'll also have a chat with Jennifer Bendery of HuffPost She wrote a piece last week marking the 48th anniversary of Leonard Peltier's incarceration -- even after just about everyone, including those who prosecuted him, say he doesn't belong in jail.. Sometimes life just isn't fair.
Enjoy this replay of my conversation with one of my environmental heroes Doug Peacock. I was fortunate to meet Doug at an Earth First! Rendezvous in Idaho in 1988.
