I'm joined by a new guest on the show hanging out with me today, Jason Loo. Jason is a Toronto based Eisner Award winner and a Harvey Award nominee with credits on both sides of the isle as an artist and a writer with creator owned projects The Pitiful Human-Lizard, Afterlift, and The All Nighter and although he's no newcomer to Marvel, he is tackling not one but two series out this fall with Werewolf By Night and the Dazzler mini-series creating a new soundtrack for everyone's favorite disco queen which will be a part of the From the Ashes storyline redefining the X-Universe post Krakoa. These couldn't be farther apart tonally. Jason wrote new songs for Marvel's beloved disco queen and this version of the character is inspired by Taylor Swift, who knows if she'll have an NFL boyfriend, and Werewolf by Night breaks new ground in Marvel's 50 plus years of storytelling launching their new Red Band formatting, a Parental Advisory designation promising more blood and violence than ever before. Dazzler from Marvel SO BRIGHT THIS STAR! DAZZLER, Marvel's glittering mutant songstress, has been in and out of the limelight over the years - but now the time has finally come for her to take center stage! Dazzler embarks on a new world tour, the culmination and celebration of her entire musical career! And along for the ride is her new road crew: Domino, Strong Guy and Multiple Man! But while Dazzler may be ready to focus on her music, her celebrity-mutant status and a violent attack may sideline the entire endeavor before it's even begun… Each issue features original song lyrics from Ali's notebook! Don't miss the concert - and comic - event of the year! Werewolf by Night from Marvel Full moon rise—werewolf kill! Jack Russell has been trying to live a simple life—but in the deadly and dramatic wake of the Blood Hunt, his life is about to be turned upside down in ways he never imagined! With new enemies hoping to extract a (literal) pound of flesh and Jack unsure if he can be trusted around old allies and a lost love, the original Werewolf by Night is in for the fight of his life… and he's in it alone! Our episode sponsors unSeen/unHeard: Disability and Neurodivergence Comic Anthology on Kickstarter Don't miss this 64-page, 12 story anthology where at least 50% of each creative team is comprised of people who are neurodivergent or have a disability. Andrew Thomas lucked out. Just as his indie comic Post-Human (kind of Inspector Gadget meets film noir) was disintegrating because of creative differences with the writer, the Northern Ontario Comicon in Timmins, Ontario contacted him about developing an ongoing superhero series featuring its mascot – an anthropomorphic lion in medieval garb named Auric of the Great White North. The local media latched on to the hero they could finally call their own and the title has been a hit ever since -- already on issue three and having made multiple printings of the prior issue zero mini comic. Meanwhile, as a talented and fast letterer, he soon found himself lettering all the comics printed by Chapterhouse Publishing, including Captain Canuck, Northguard, Freelance, The Pitiful Human-Lizard and Agents of P.A.C.T. to name a few. He even gets to illustrate a variant cover or two for them now and then (not a bad gig). We talk about all of it, as well as why it's so important to spread comic book culture through small town Ontario. This show was edited by Justin Chandler. Mitchell Thompson and Justin Chandler cut the version that played on the radio.
The creator behind The Pitiful Human Lizard, Jason Loo, sits in to discuss the upcoming Mississauga Comic Expo happening October 21 and 22 at the Mississauga Central Library. We also chat about the origins of The Pitiful Human Lizard, how Jason got into comics, the current state of Libraries in this digital age and more.
Meaghan Carter’s love of manga and anime informs all of the webcomics she does. Take Off features fantastical creatures working together with their human partners like Digimon or Pokemon. In a way, Godslave is the same, but the relationship is a master-student dynamic, like the ninja schools of Naruto, with a lot of Egyptian history informing the narrative. It’s no wonder the strips have garnered her enough of a cult following to earn her a gig as the new colourist on The Pitiful Human-Lizard. She breaks down the role of a colourist, why you need an insane work ethic to even make it into comics and why her belief in ghosts and the afterlife will probably be a major component of her next project.
