André once again dips into the extremely talented pool that is the Toronto based comic art scene to chat with a talented and vibrant creator!Paris Alleyne is a Toronto-based comic-book artist. He has done work as a colourist for Ninja Turtle, Ghostbuster, GI Joe, Captain Canuck, and Riftworld comics. His art has appeared in Marvel, DC, IDW, Chapterhouse, Black Comix Returns and his own independent Haven comics. Paris speaks about noticing the power of art in comics with an unconventional Superman story, why art was always his end goal and how important it was to him to carve his own path as an artist aside from his work as a colourist.

The man behind one of the most enduring independent characters of all time, Captain Canuck, brings his maple leaves to the Dollar Bin Bandits! That's right, Richard Comely joins Oren and special guest host Sean McMillan to reflect on the genesis of our super neighbor to the north. The Captain made his debut in 1975 and became an immediate sensation, with the first issue outselling all other comic books in Canada that year. Comely stuck with the character through thick and thin, publishing Captain Canuck comics sporadically in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. If you love any iteration of the red and white defender of all things Canadian, this is the episode for you!You can follow Richard on Facebook or at comelyart.com.__________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. **Because Tank Girl!** It's a special day for comic-book fans. A time when rich and poor alike can enjoy the antics of superheroes and villains together … until the inevitable fight over the last free issue of whatever's popular at the time. That's right. Andrew Thomas lucked out. Just as his indie comic Post-Human (kind of Inspector Gadget meets film noir) was disintegrating because of creative differences with the writer, the Northern Ontario Comicon in Timmins, Ontario contacted him about developing an ongoing superhero series featuring its mascot – an anthropomorphic lion in medieval garb named Auric of the Great White North. The local media latched on to the hero they could finally call their own and the title has been a hit ever since -- already on issue three and having made multiple printings of the prior issue zero mini comic. Meanwhile, as a talented and fast letterer, he soon found himself lettering all the comics printed by Chapterhouse Publishing, including Captain Canuck, Northguard, Freelance, The Pitiful Human-Lizard and Agents of P.A.C.T. to name a few. He even gets to illustrate a variant cover or two for them now and then (not a bad gig). We talk about all of it, as well as why it's so important to spread comic book culture through small town Ontario. Celine Dion, curling, pierogis, whether or not Canadians actually say "eh," poutine—all this and more on this week's episode on Canada. My high school classmate Luke tells me about living in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, which even Canadians assume is right outside Toronto. I chide him for not knowing about Grimes or "Orphan Black," and we catch up on where in the world our parents are these days. LISTEN!!Jim and Alex are at it again. This week we bid a fond farewell to Chris Christie, the only one in the GOP Clown Car who was qualified to drive. Jim gets a new Captain Canuck comic book (apparently, it's for real!) A poor innocent guy from India makes the history books in a VERY unpleasant way. And Florida explores a new form of currency to replace the dollar. Take a listen, and see why we called it: "Want Fries With That?"
Episode 11: A Palindrome of Numbers! This episode, Bryn goes hog wild on comics chat (skip to 48:20 if you hate comics and Bryn), but we eventually talk about One-Punch Man and South Park. Also, stay tuned after the end music for a mea culpa from Marshall on the Apple Pencil, a discussion of access to Apple product innards, and Josh's thoughts on the Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse 2. Kalman Andrasofszky isn’t only a high-profile fan of this podcast, he joined RAID Studio in the same month as our last guest Scott Hepburn. Before he was the driving force behind the modern relaunch of Captain Canuck, he had drawn everything from early clipart packages, role-playing games and loads of covers for Marvel and DC. He chats about the genesis of his love for comics and career as an artist, what it’s like transitioning from an artist to now primarily a writer and why Canadian media (including Captain Canuck) is no longer anything to be ashamed of or self-conscious about.
Note: We like our language NSFW salty, and there be spoilers here...Face Front, True Believers! This week is maple-syrup flavored as we welcome everyone's favorite French Canadian chronicler of sci-fi, Siskoid! Plus the usual plain American hamburger and shake that is Illegal Machine & Diabolu Frank! We of course talk about Alpha Flight, Plastique, Kids in the Hall, SCTV, Barenaked Ladies and the plight of the First Nation, but I'm afraid Alan Thicke, Justin Bieber and Captain Canuck will have to wait for some follow-up show! Asterix! Tintin! Be sure to check out Siskoid's own show, The Lonely Hearts Romance Comics Podcast! Excelsior!
The co-creator of Northguard – Canada’s first post-modern superhero – sits down for a chat on Fan Expo weekend. We talk about his place in Canadian comic history, the mentorship he received from the creator of Captain Canuck, his Orion scifi fanzine and what it was like to meet Johnny Canuck creator Les Barker.
Avalon Expo continues as Stylin' Steve and Shannon sit down with Kalman Andrasofszky, the illustrator, comic artist, concept artist, cover artist & designer of the new Captain Canuck to talk with him about the revival of the character.
Your Graphic Novice hosts are far too mature to address the connotations related to the number of this episode (because we're saving that for episode 69.1). While we still consider ourselves a comic book podcast, it always seems to take a while before we get to comics and this week's episode is no exception. Nickel's cabin restoration continues, we are once again forced to address moon wars, and various podcast feuds that we have going on, and on a more serious note, Mrs. VF pays a visit to the hospital (she's ok). Internet troubles (that you might not notice due to VF's magical editing) plague the podcast and almost shut us down for the night, but through sheer perseverance, and several additional alcoholic beverages, we forge ahead to comic news, where we discuss our thoughts on the new Fantastic Four movie, Jared Leto's Joker, and Batman vs. Robin. "Rapid-Fire Review" is actually reasonably rapid for once, as we decide to limit the discussion from a few selected books from each of July 15, July 22 & July 29, 2015. Our "reviews" cover Hawkeye #22, Valiant's Book of Death #1, '68 Last Rights #1, Spider-Woman #9, Uncanny X-Men #35, Sabrina #4, Hacktivist Volume 2 #1, Captain Canuck 2015 #3, Lazarus #18, Southern Bastards #10, and Ninjak #5. We wrap things up with a look ahead to the books being released on August 5, 2015. Stay-tuned for our upcoming love-makin’ advice episode, featuring listener questions, sexually controversial moments in comic history, and some very special guests. As always, thanks a bunch for listening.
Graphic Novice returns from an unscheduled hiatus with a landmark episode 68 with opening music by Henno. VF and his sidekick discuss the stress of not reading comics, cabin renovations, Michael Leal, The Salty Language Podcast, bidets and bathroom sanitation, adventures at the dentist's office, VF vs. The Angry Ginger and a t-shirt update. The "Comic News" segements covers Ant-Man, Batman v. Superman and why Graphic Novice didnt spend any time talking about the San Diego Comic Con this year. In an attempt to get caught up, the guys have to dip way back into June and hide how few books they've actually read with an extremely selective version of "Rapid-Fire Review". The comic books discussed include We Are Robin #1, E is For Extinction #1, X-Men '92 #1, and Ninjak #4 (from June 24, 2015), Captain Canuck #2, Detective Comics #42, Secret Wars #4 (From July 1, 2015), Batman #42, Earth 2 Society 2, Starve #2 (interspersed with a Todd McFarland rant), Civil War #1 and Boom!'s Strange Fruit #1. Thigs are wrapped up, as always, with a look towards the books we'll be discussing next week. Thanks for listening, listeners. We love you!
Kick off your shoes, get comfortable and get ready for almost 3 hours of the Graphic Novice Comic Book Podcast. The opening segment takes up roughly an hour, as VF & Nickel catch up and discuss the Graphic Novice T-Shirt campaign, cabin renovations, July 4th, gun control and fireworks. After the non-comic related banter comes to an end, the "Comic News" segment focuses entirely on a run down of all the books scheduled for release or relaunch following the end of Marvel's "Secret Wars" event. VF and Nickel discuss each book and share their relative enthusiasm for the title. Following one of the longer news segments, HQ sent the signal down to try and wrap things up, so the guys limited "Rapid Fire Review" to one week of books, looking at the titles released on June 17, 2015, including: Captain Canuck #2, Black Canary #1, Justice League of America #1, Alex + Ada #15, Lazarus #17, Low#7, Manifest Destiny #15, Southern Bastards #9, Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars #2, Magneto #19, Moon Knight #16, Ms. Marvel #16, Old Man Logan #2, Runaways #1, Thors #1, Bloodshot Reborn #3, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #45 & 46. The guys promise to catch up on Rapid Fire Review next episode and close out the show with a look at the books released on July 8, 2015. Thanks so much for listening... Stay Classy.

Graphic Novice returns this week for their 65th episode with hosts VF & Nickel attempting to get caught up by reviewing 2 weeks of new comics. Slaves to the show format, we refuse to skip right to any sort of comic book banter, but instead spend the first 40 minutes or so discussing birthdays, long haul truckin', ladybugs, bee-keeping, podcasting responsibilities and our relaxed summer recording schedule. Comic news almost gets skipped over completely, before VF sneaks in a quick discussion on The Punisher showing up for Season 2 of Daredevil next year. In "Rapid-Fire Review" we discuss Sabrina #3, Captain Canuck #1, Convergence #8, Sandman Overture #5, Deadly Class #13, Outcast #9, Postal #4, They're Not Like Us #6, All-New Hawkeye #3, Inferno #1, Infinity Gauntlet #1, Inhumans Attilan Rising #1, Nova #31, Old Man Logan #1, Secret Wars Journal #1, Grimm Tales of Terror #11 (from May 27, 2015) as well as Archie #666, Broken World #1, Midnighter #1, D4VE #5, Autumnlands Tooth & Claw #6, Nailbiter #13, The Wicked + The Divine #11, All-New X-Men #41, Groot #1, Master of Kung-Fu #2, Spider-Woman #8, Superior Iron-Man #9, X-Tinction Agenda #1, and Years of Future Past #1 (From June 3, 2105). As always, the show wraps up with a look at some of the books we're looking forward to checking out the following week, in this case, June 10, 2015. Keep on Truckin'!
It's the beginning of the month, and that means that the Two Guys with PhDs Talking about Comics take a metaphorical stroll through the latest Previews catalog. And this month, their peregrinations are more than casual; this is more like a power walk. The March Previews contains a hefty series of solicitations that make for an extra-long episode, almost leaving the guys feeling like they've completed a marathon. Among the many upcoming titles that Derek and Andy highlight are Fight Club 2 #1, Harrow County #1, and High Crimes (from Dark Horse Comics); You Don't Say, Little Nemo: Return to Slumberland, and Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency #1 (IDW Publications); the usual slew of #1 issues from Image Comics such as Injection, Mythic, Material, Valhalla Mad, and Minimum Wage: So Many Bad Decisions; Russian Olive to Red King (AdHouse Books); a variety of books from and distributed through Alternative Comics, such as Irene Vol. 4, It Will All Hurt #1, Island of Memory Vol. 1, The Secret Voice #2, and Smilin' Ed Comics; the first issue in Alan Moore's new Lovecraftian series, Providence (Avatar Press); the new Captain Canuck #1 (Chapter House Publishing); Don't Get Eaten by Anything and The Disappearance of Charley Butters (Conundrum Press); Drawn and Quarterly: Twenty-five Years of Contemporary Cartooning, Comics, and Graphic Novels and Optic Nerve #14 (Drawn and Quarterly); the usual impressive offerings from Fantagraphics, including Maria M. Book 2, Adventures of Tad Martin #Sick Sick Sick, and The Life and Legend of Wallace Wood; Exquisite Corpse (First Second); Annihilator, Vol. 1 (Legendary Comics); Louise Brooks, Detective (NBM); Aama Vol. 3: The Desert of Mirrors and The King in Yellow (SelfMadeHero); Surface Tension #1 and The 6 Voyages of Lone Sloane #1 (Titan Comics); and Monster Mash: The Creepy, Kooky Monster Craze in America: 1957-1972 (Tomorrows Publishing). In addition to focusing on all of these upcoming releases, Andy and Derek also discuss Dark Horse's recent decision to make several of their ongoing series digital-only, IDW's acquisition of Top Shelf Productions as a new imprint, Alternative Comic's new distribution agreement with several small presses, the joys of Adrian Tomine, and the fact that this is “Women in Comics” month in the March Previews catalog. In all, lots o' things are covered…the kind of substantive, quality programming you've come to expect from the Two Guys with PhDs.
