Can The Minions Tell Us Anything?

"I will never again spend money on a Minion movie. ... I surprised myself. I went into this a huge fan of the Minions. And I thought 'Oh, they're so popular, we should talk about them on the left.' And I don't regret this conversation at all. It has deepened my understanding. But I have come out of it as an anti-fan." — Yasmin Nair Current Affairs podcasts have been deadly serious lately, with many shows devoted to U.S. foreign policy, including episodes on Palestine (Part I, Part II), Afghanistan, U.S. empire, and the threat of nuclear war. Today we take a break from eating our vegetables and indulge ourselves in a bit of dessert, with a much lighter subject (some might say a frivolous one): the "Minions" from the Despicable Me series. Films featuring the Minions have been hugely successful, being some of the top-grossing animated films of all time and spawning a multi-billion-dollar franchise with a vast range of products, from toasters that will imprint a Minion onto a piece of bread to toothpaste dispensers and Minion-shaped tic-tacs. On Etsy, one can choose among dozens of different crocheted Minion hats. The Minions have become ubiquitous in memes and a 2015 article called "How Minions Destroyed The Internet" argues that Minions have become a "template onto which we project ourselves." But can we learn anything from the Minions films? Today, Current Affairs editor-in-chief Nathan J. Robinson is joined by editor-at-large Yasmin Nair and managing editor Lily Sánchez for a discussion about the Despicable Me and Minions films, probing such questions as:In depicting unfree and uncompensated labor by a mass of nondescript fungible workers, do the films implicitly affirm a Marxist critique of capitalism? (Answer: not really.)Should children actually watch Minions films, or will they be corrupted in various ways? (Answer: Do not let your child watch Minions films unless you want them to start imitating Minions for weeks on end.)Are these films entirely stupid or do they have artistic merit?Do the films have some uncomfortable ethnic stereotypes and some stuff that is weirdly inappropriate for kids? (Yes and yes.)Does the fact that Minions have to "serve the most villainous master" explain why the films had to trap them in a cave for the years 1933-1945?Why has Yasmin gone from loving posting Minions memes to being an "anti-fan"?Does Hollywood's relentless search for giant profits mean we will be subjected to new Minions films for the rest of our natural lives?"I think I feel about the Minions the way I feel about shopping malls, which is that I can go to them or see them as sociological experiments mostly, as opposed to genuine enjoyment." — Lily"I am surrounded by ever-growing piles of Minions in my dreams." — NathanThe scene of Minions being tortured can be watched here. The full "banana song" can be heard (if so desired) here. Lily's article about families is here and Nathan's about J.K. Rowling is here. The Cracked article alleging that the film leaves open the possibility that the Minions have committed murder is here. The Vox article "Labor exploitation, explained by Minions" is here. A more basic Vox "explainer" on Minions is here. The academic article "Beautiful Exploitation. Notes on the Un-free Minions" is here. "Are children who watch the first three Despicable Me movies going to grow up to become laborers who don't understand their enslavement? Given the way capitalism is crushing the world, I seriously doubt it. ... It's a kids' movie about a bunch of yellow pills who like bananas and run around speaking gibberish. Those kids will grow up, they'll be fine." — Yasmin "No! The movie normalized and accustomed them to situations of exploitation by depicting the Minions as content with their condition!" — Nathan Please enjoy our detailed analysis of Minions. As Nathan promises at the end of the episode, we will never be revisiting the subject, no matter how many more of these films are released. Minions Being Tortured:

On this week's Richard Crouse Show we'll meet Dylan Smith. The son of filmmakers, Smith had an eye on a career in hockey until he was sidelined by an injury and discovered theatre. He is now an accomplished stage and film actor who has performed on Broadway, appeared in films like in films like “300,” “Total Recall,” “Murder on the Orient Express” and many others. He will next be seen in Prime Video's largest title to date, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” The series serves as a prequel to the events we all know from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy and focuses on the forging of the Rings of Power and the One Ring in the Second Age. It begins it Prime Video run on September 2. Then, you know jenny Slate as the voice of Tammy Larsen on the critically acclaimed animated sitcom “Bob's Burgers,” as Mona-Lisa on the series “Parks and Recreation,” as well as films like “Obvious Child” which won her the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actress in a Comedy, “The Secret Life of Pets” film franchise, “The Lego Batman Movie,” and “Despicable Me 3” and recently in the critically acclaimed “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” Her latest film “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,” expands on her popular YouTube videos that feature a talking seashell outfitted with a single googly eye and a pair of miniature shoes. It is one of my favorite movies of the year.

Eight new movie reviews this episode, at least from Steve Prokopy who saw all of them. Erik Childress saw half of them. Half of those even great. But which ones? There are two Antonio Banderas films this week with him in action mode (Code Name Banshee) and another as an egotistical actor being directed by Penelope Cruz (Official Competition). Scout Taylor-Compton tries to survive an evening in a house again (The Long Night) and Ralph Fiennes tries to survive in the Moroccan desert away from Jessica Chastain after they accidentally kill a local boy in the latest from John Michael McDonaugh (The Forgiven). Love is afoot in 19th century England (Mr. Malcolm's List) and Joey King literally fights back against marriage in some time period (The Princess). Finally two films vie for family attention (Minions: The Rise of Gru, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On). Which one are you a bad parent for not taking your kids to? Also for an added bonus, Erik & Steve make their choices for the Best of the First Half of 2022, films and performances. 0:00 - Intro 1:18 - Code Name Banshee 8:40 - Official Competition 21:22 - The Long Night 27:14 - The Forgiven 41:17 - Mr. Malcolm's List 47:40 - The Princess 55:35 - Minions: The Rise of Gru 1:04:29 - Marcel the Shell With Shoes On  1:17:15 – Erik & Steve's First Half of 2022 Ballots 1:23:36 - Outro

Just in time for the real Independence Day, Stuart and Jacob sat down to discuss the 1996 Roland Emmerich movie and its overdue sequel, complete with pointless franchise setup at the end. Oh, weren't they ambitious? It the Super Mario Bros. Movie all over again! But, that being said, are either of these truly bad? I'm sure the boys have some thoughts on that matter. Also in this episode is catching up on Despicable Me, a brief diatribe on the state of body horror, gushing over a very brief appearance from Harvey Fierstein, and a discussion on taking advantage on the establishment of a new timeline. Baz Luhrmann's new biopic, Elvis, tied Top Gun at the box office this past weekend, and we've got some thoughts on all two hours and forty rhinestone-scarved minutes of its overstuffed runtime. It's not a wildly busy weekend at the theaters, what with Independence Day pushing most people out of doors, but that doesn't mean we can't have some fun with the latest Despicable Me spin-off, Minions: The Rise of Gru. Lastly, Bruce has a great conversation with Henry Thomas about his claustrophobic new thriller, Crawlspace. Thomas is best known from his role forty years ago as Elliot in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, but he's been a working actor ever since, most recently making a name for himself in Mike Flanagan's series of creepy films and shows you can find on Netflix. Studio sessions, film dates, international touring, jazz concerts, guest appearances, and clinics keep him busy not only in his hometown of Los Angeles, but worldwide.  Born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1958, Bergeron came to Los Angeles at age one, so considers himself a native Californian. Originally starting on French horn, he switched to trumpet in seventh grade and found he had natural upper register ability. Bergeron credits his junior high and high school teachers, Ron Savitt and Bob Smith, for molding his talent into practical working skills.  Bergeron first caught the ear of many when he landed the lead trumpet chair with Maynard Ferguson's band in 1986. Bergeron can be heard on Maynard's recordings of Body and Soul, Big Bop Nouveau, Brass Attitude, and The One and Only Maynard Ferguson.  Bergeron demonstrates daily why Maynard remarked, “Wayne is the most musical lead trumpet player I've had on my band.”  As a sideman, Bergeron's list of recording credits reads like a who's who in contemporary jazz and pop, running the stylistic gamut from Ray Charles to Green Day. Other names include Panic, AT the Disco!, Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Barbra Streisand, Michael Buble, Mary J. Blige, Indina Menzel, Leslie Oden Jr., Herb Alpert, The Jonas Brothers, Burt Bacharach, The Dirty Loops, Seth MacFarlane, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Seal, Diana Krall, Tito Puente, Christina Aguilera, Dianne Reeves, Michael Bolton, Earth Wind & Fire, The Pussy Cat Dolls, My Chemical Romance, The Mars Volta, Chicago, Rosemary Cloony, Diane Schuur, Barry Manilow, Lee Ann Womack, Lou Rawls, Eric Marienthal, Kenny G., and David Benoit.  Bergeron has worked on over 450 TV & motion picture soundtracks. Welcome back to ArtBeat Radio! Max: Hello and welcome back to ArtBeat radio!  This week, we will be sharing a short scene called, The Glowing Battle Sword from the Sea, from a series called, Beach Front Stories, created by students in playwriting class at ART Center.   We worked together to brainstorm, rehearse, and record these scenes and we hope you enjoy them!  SCENE 4: THE GLOWING BATTLE SWORD FOUND IN THE SEALights up on four people dressed as Illumination minions from Despicable Me. There are mirrors strategically positioned around the stage to create the effect of more Minions. Other set/prop design elements may be added for the effect. There are ocean sounds in the background and stage hands flapping fabric to emulate waves. The four minions, MINION 1, MINION 2, MINION 3, and MINION 4 stand in front of the waves looking out towards the audience presumably at the rest of the ocean. The four minions begin to communicate in minioneze, making gibberish sounds that start with "B" such as "Bababababoh". The minions communicate through these sounds emphasized with gestures and facial expressions. They are obviously excited. Throughout the "conversation" the minions are pointing into the audience, presumably referencing the ocean.ED enters the stage running. He stops when he sees the minions on the other side of the stage.ED: (Breathing heavy, not in character) I am so sorry, I thought I missed the scene. (Slowly looks at the audience.) Alright, time to get in character. (The actor playing ED shakes their body around and makes some vocal warm-up noises. When they are finished, they are in character for the rest of the scene.) Come over here guys! (ED gestures off-stage.)EDDY and EDD enter, also running.EDDY: Did ya find the sword?ED: No not yet, sorry. (points to minions)But I found... minions.EDD: Can you imagine how many quarters we could sell that sword for?EDDY: I know! I can't wait to use those quarters from this sword to buy a new sword.EDD: Don't you think someone else will try to get it before us?ED: Yeah... I think that is why they are here. (ED points at the minions who are still discussing in minioneze.)EDDY: (yelling) Come over here minions, BaaBaaBooLoo!The four minion slowly walk towards ED, EDD, and EDDY until the two groups face each other.Beat it! We're the ones that are going to get that sword!MINION 1: We need that sword so we can keep it safe!EDD: WOAH, WOAH, WOAH, wait a minute! I thought I was supposed get the sword. It is so awesome and I don't have one.MINION 2: That is not a good reason.ED: Why is it not a good reason?!? He really wants the sword.MINION 3: We need that sword to defeat Vector! He's committing crimes with direction and magnitude.EDDY: You heard 'em boys! We are going to need that sword if we ever want deflection and attitude. The Minions scoff and roll their eyes at EDDY's misunderstanding.MINION 4: Hey look! You heard us first. WE NEED THE SWORD.EDDY: Well if you want the sword you're going to have to pry it from my cold, dead hands. INION 3: Good luck with that! (laughs) While we were arguing we already sent a scuba team down to get the sword.EDDY: What, really??? That ain't fair!MINION 1: Life isn't fair... deal with it.All four minions jump into the "water". Stagehands move the fabric to cover the minions so the audience only sees their hands if they reach up.ED, EDD, and EDDY jump in after them. We see hands reaching out of the water and fighting with one another, indicating a struggle for the sword.Hardcore, melodramatic action music plays loudly during the sequence.EDD emerges from the water. He whimpers and runs out of the water. EDD exits.EDDY emerges holding a plastic sword.EDDY: I got it! I got it! (MINION 1 pops up from the water.)MINION 1: I don't think so.(MINION 1 pops back into the water)MINION 2: (Emerges holding a piece of driftwood giggling.) Hahahahhaha...... oh....(MINION 2 goes back into the water)
