This episode was an absolute blast to record. Ryan has written for film, television, and even a novel (Winders), and so it was fascinating listening to him talk about how he approaches a project depending on the medium. Ryan is also an actor and director and I think has a unique approach to storytelling, especially when it comes to comics, and his love for this medium shines through. For television, Ryan has written for Marvel's Legion, Skins, Queen of the South, and Wu-Tang: an American Saga. We talk about his early musical ambitions, his film Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best, kids growing up now versus the 1990s, the importance of horror, and, of course, Tim Seeley. Ryan instantly attained the status of a guest I hope to have back on again soon. Issue 2 of Pretty Hate Machine will be out May 27, 2026 by Mad Cave Studios. Comics writer Julio Anta joins Byron on the show to explore his new Dark Horse Comics project, The Beast of Boriken. Part of Tiny Onion's True Weird series, this tropical horror story uses the legend of the Chupacabra to address the complex history of colonization, activism, and trauma in Puerto Rico. Julio breaks down his collaboration with artist and Puerto Rica native Daniel Irizarri, and how they blended indigenous Taino culture weaving it with the legend of El Chupacabra and applying that formula to highlight modern-day political struggles. We also discuss his extensive background in the YA and middle-grade graphic novel markets including the June release of his second Hillside Valley graphic novel, Sol Goes For Goal!, and why he believes comics are a unique medium for what he calls Revolutionary Optimism. "The Chupacabra is a sort of manifestation of the anger and the trauma that the people of this island, from the time of the indigenous, have all felt." Julio's website Interview Breakdown * El Chupacabra Origins: Julio shares his childhood memories of El Vampiro de Moca and the 1995 sightings that popularized the cryptid. * A look at Loli, an activist radicalized by the aftermath of Hurricane Maria that is the primary protagonist in The Beast of Boriken. * How the comic mirrors real-world issues like the Esencia project and modern land grabs in Puerto Rico. * The importance of working with a Puerto Rican creative partner to ensure cultural accuracy from the landscapes to the botanica spiritual scenes in the book. * Why Julio develops comprehensive guides for schools and libraries to keep graphic novels relevant in classrooms. The Beast of Boriken from Dark Horse Comics A thrilling new True Weird series from Tiny Onion by co-creators Julio Anta (Frontera; Sí, Se Puede) and Daniel Irizarri (Xino, Cementary Kids Don't Die) bringing el Chupacabra to life! In contemporary Puerto Rico, Loli Flores is a fierce activist fighting the overdevelopment of the island by outside investors. When a ground-breaking ceremony is violently interrupted by a supernatural force, Loli discovers that the stories of el Chupacabra are not just echoes from the past, but a brutal protector of generations extending back to the indigenous people of the island. As Loli uncovers the horrors firstand, el Chupacabra is on a parallel path with elemental destruction left in his wake. Follow Comic Book Yeti

We are flipping the script and doing something new today to celebrate our 450th episode as I welcome my co-host Jimmy Gaspero on for the very first time as a guest of the show to celebrate the release of his debut graphic novel project Penny and the Yeti from Papercutz. I've known about some of the origin story of the project but not all of it that started as a simple bedtime conversation with his daughter, Penny, and somehow became a fully-fledged graphic novel with artist Amber Akin. We do a deep dive into that transition, the relatable real life parental struggles woven into the fabric of the story, and Jimmy shares some of his all-time favorites from cryptids to plays. Jimmy on BlueSky Buy Penny and the Yeti From the publisher YETI OR NOT, HERE WE COME! Before Yeti, Penny had a super normal life with her big sister Peri and their parents, Fenton and Maxine. Penny thinks life is pretty great, especially when Peri draws and colors with her—Peri draws the best monsters called “cryptids!” The only real problem is Penny's parents argue…a LOT. Penny wishes her parents would stop, but what can she do? That's when Yeti shows up, right out of one of Peri's drawings and smack into Penny's life! With Yeti's help, Penny comes up with a plan to get her parents to stop fighting. He suffers from night terrors, obsessively draws the same mysterious figures again and again, all while listening to one track of music on repeat–oh, and the only “person” he ever talks to is a stray cat. His humanity is hanging by a thread. Sarah is a new arrival to the city, fighting her own demons, and her job is to remotely spy on Ted to ensure he doesn't hurt anyone…or himself. When Ted's mental state begins to crack, Sarah compassionately intervenes to help, and things go catastrophically wrong.
