What the Riff?!?
1989 - February: U2 "Rattle and Hum"

What the Riff?!?

U2 released a part-live, part studio album in October 1988 called Rattle and Hum.  This album accompanied a filmed “Rockumentary” of the band which was filmed in Denver and Arizona.  Originally intended to be entitled  “U2 in the Americas,” the album and film instead take their name from lyrics in the song “Bullet the Blue Sky' from their album “The Joshua Tree.” Studio sessions for Rattle and Hum included time at Sun Studio in Memphis, and include collaborations with other musicians including Bob Dylan and B.B. King.  The intent of Rattle and Hum was to explore more American blues rock, and folk, and roots music of the 50's and 60's, and includes both original and cover songs.  Critics were divided on the album at the time of its release.  Some felt that U2 was not celebrating blues rock and artists as much as they were attempting to insert themselves into higher echelons of rock celebrity.  Over time the criticisms of egotism would fade, as U2 has indeed proven to be a major force in the Rock pantheon.  In retrospect, both Bono and The Edge have found Rattle and Hum to be a bit of a side excursion for the band, more of a “scrapbook” than a true direction.  The new direction of U2 would be set beginning with their next studio album, “Achtung Baby” in 1991.  Regardless, Rattle and Hum is a great album, well worth a listen.  The collaboration with other artists is worth special attention, as is its examination of the way that modern rock finds its roots in the delta blues.Friend of the show Greg Lyon sits in for Wayne, while Rob brings us this hybrid album for today's podcast.Angel of HarlemThe second single from the album is an original studio release which was written as an homage to Billie Holiday.  Songwriting took place during the tour for ”The Joshua Tree,” and the lyrics take inspiration form various landmarks around New York City.  The track reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 9 on the UK Singles chart.  When Love Comes to TownRecorded in Sun Studios, this U2 original song features collaboration with blues guitarist B.B. King. Live performances included B.B. King and his band during the “Lovetown Tour” in 1989.  U2 would discontinue playing the song in concert over time, but revived it in 2015 as a tribute to B.B. King after his death.  King plays lead on this song written by The Edge, who takes on rhythm guitar for this track. All Along the WatchtowerThis live cover is of a song written by Bob Dylan and made famous by Jimi Hendrix.  The lyrics are of a conversation between a joker and a thief, and several lines echo lines of scripture from the book of Isaiah in the Bible.  U2 performed this live cover in San Francisco at the “Save The Yuppie Free Concert.”  Some of the lyrics were altered, which irritated Dylan. Pride (In the Name of Love)A live version of the studio song from the 1984 album The Unforgettable Fire, this was recorded in Denver.  The popularity of this song can be heard in the audience call-and-response.  The lyrics were inspired by elements of the civil rights movement, particularly the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Iko Iko by The Belle Stars (from the motion picture “Rain Man”)Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman turned in stellar performances in this dramatic film exploring autism. STAFF PICKS:Kiss by Art of Noise featuring Tom JonesBruce leads off the staff picks with a cover of a Prince song performed by an unusual pairing of art rock group the Art of Noise with Vegas crooner Tom Jones.  This became the biggest hit for the Art of Noise to that point, reaching number 5 on the UK charts and number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100.  She Drives Me Crazy by Fine Young CannibalsLynch brings us the most successful single from the British pop trio, off their second and final album, “The Raw & the Cooked.” The band formed from two previous bands, one Ska, and one Punk.  The track was composed at Prince's Paisley Park Studios in Minneapolis.Once Bitten, Twice Shy by Great WhiteGreg features a rocker.  Great White covered a song originally written and performed by Ian Hunter in 1975.  This song went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Great White had a more blues-oriented sound than many of the hair metal bands of the late 80's.  Lead singer Jack Russell passed after a battle with Lewy body dementia in August 2024.What I Am by Edie Brickell & New BohemiansRob closes out the staff picks with the signature song off Edie Brickell & New Bohemians' debut album, "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars."  The inspiration for the song was Brickell's frustration with the dogma exhibited in a world religions class in college.  Brickell would meet her husband and fellow musician, Paul Simon, when she performed this song on Saturday Night Live. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Sunset Road by Bela Fleck & the FlecktonesThis jazz fusion piece with an unusual banjo lead was on the group's debut album, and takes us out for this episode. The authors of two new poetry collections aspire to reach broad audiences with their work. First, John Himmelman says he wanted to tell stories with as few words as possible. The Boy Who Lived in a Shell, a book of illustrated poems intended for children, is connected by a single narrator, Ivo, who lives in a giant moon snail shell. In today's episode, Himmelman speaks with NPR's Scott Simon about working at a New York library, writing to make himself laugh, and making poetry accessible to short attention spans. Then, lawyer, educator and author Reginald Dwayne Betts spent eight years in prison for a crime he committed at 16. While there, Betts began to write. His latest collection Doggerel plays with the idea of mediocre poetry and a recurring motif of dogs. In today's episode, he speaks with NPR's Michel Martin about his Jack Russell terrier, reading poetry to strangers, and an emotional encounter with the police. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Lead with Love: A Journey of Discovery by Jack Russell Amazon.com Selfsustainingleadership.com Have you always known love?” a dear friend asked Jack as they were driving home on a dark, bitterly cold winter night. It took a mile or so before he responded, “Yes.” He felt the prevalent darkness deep in his being. It was an emotionally turbulent moment in his life. His wife had recently died after a short illness. But he also experienced Love in the deepest moments of his despair bringing rays of light and hope to the darkness. Yes, he could truly say that he had experienced Love's comfort, guidance, healing, and protection in many, many ways throughout his life. His friend continued, “What is this Love that you've known?” Her question was the beginning of a focused journey of exploration and discovery lasting well over a decade. In 1997, Jack created a cutting edge, quantum leadership model for the 21st century—Self-Sustaining Leadership. At its core, it says we are all connected, entangled together in a web-of-life. Leadership is about relationships; how we connect with others and ourselves in ways that contribute to our collective well-being, productivity, health, and peace. It is Love, a universal principle that sustains this connection; that connects us heart-to-heart. But how do we live this connection with ourselves and others in our daily lives? How does Love guide us to know what is the morally right thing to do in different situations? How do we practice loving ourselves so we can love others more deeply? How does fear and love motivate us in everything we do? What does Love have to do with leadership? Jack takes us on a journey of discovery in answering these questions and more. In doing so, he shows us how to lead with Love! As I read Jack's work,” one reader offers, “it feels like he's sharing with me, like we're having a conversation. He speaks to my heart.” This book is about connecting heart-to-heart.About the author Jack is a proven leader, author, executive coach-mentor, organization trainer-instructor, and entrepreneur. He is a leadership visionary who, in 1997, created a cutting-edge Self-Sustaining Leadership model based on the principles of quantum mechanics. It was the fulfillment of a life-long quest to discover a 21st-century model to meet the universal need for holistic, multi-dimensional, skillful, and morally courageous leaders in real-world settings. Describing his work, people comment on Jack's visionary insights along with his integrity, trustworthiness, engagement, deep listening, and selfless heart character traits. He has a diverse coaching, teaching and training background ranging from the U.S. Army to early child care, secondary and higher education to businesses and non-profits. Having lived and served in several countries, he brings a global perspective and a deep respect for diverse cultures to his work. He lives among the Green Mountains of Vermont with his wife, Glenda, who partners with him in the leadership work.

A Dog's Life with Anna Webb

We're joined by the Cinema Journalist, Toby Rose who is the founder of the FIDO Awards, which celebrates the roles of dogs in film.  The FIDOS 2025, staged today on February 23rd will unleash the winners of the best canine capers in cinemas at a special ceremony held at British Film Institute in London.                                                                 At its heart, the FIDOS (For Incredible Dogs On Screen) are more than an awards ceremony; they celebrate the powerful bond between dogs and humans, dedicated to making the world a more dog-friendly space, one paw at a time. As the sister ceremony of the famous Palm Dog Awards, held annually at the Cannes Film Festival, the FIDOS recognize the best onscreen dog performances over the past year. Nestling firmly between the BAFTAs and the Oscars, the event will, as always, be hosted by the founder of Palm Dog and FIDOS, Toby Rose. Rose says, “This year has been especially blessed with stand-out dog performances in films, as varied as Jean Claude in The Fall Guy, Pimpao the Jack Russell in I'm Still Here, and the Alsatian in Babygirl. The winners of FIDOS 2025 will be selected from the longest-ever longlist of contenders,” he continues.“What we know already is that dogrisma will triumph in the battle for a FIDO and ultimately the grand prize: BFI Best in World.”The FIDOS are awarded in five categories: Blockbuster Bowser, Comedy Canine, Rom Com Rover, Historical Hound, and Mutt Moment. Nominated films with four legged stars include Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, Babygirl, I'm Still Here and Deadpool & Wolverine. From the winners in these sections, an outstanding performance will be chosen and declared BFI Best in World. Also awarded is FiDogManitarian, in honour of those who celebrate the bond between canines and the human race. The top dogs are chosen by a jury of top film journalists including Anna Smith from the Girls On Film podcast; Tim Robey of The Daily Telegraph; Rita Di Santo of FIPRESCI; Damon Wise of Deadline and author and programmer Kaleem Aftab. Shortly after falling asleep, 20-year-old Jacqueline Russell woke up to use the bathroom. She groggily padded down the stairs. Jacqueline expected to see her father home from his nightly walk, but the house was eerily quiet. Shandy, the family dog, was pacing anxiously back and forth in the back garden. This week marks 8 years since the finale of the beloved series "Wishbone". In the 1990s, PBS introduced young audiences to a canine star like none other: a Jack Russell terrier who imagined himself as characters from classic works of literature. The show was called Wishbone. Today there's a whole generation of adults who were first weaned on Mark Twain, the legend of Faust or the Greek epics through this series. Wishbone is also the first TV show Mo wrote for. Mo talks with Wishbone head writer Stephanie Simpson and dog trainer Jackie Kaptan about the show and the life and career of its beloved lead actor, a dog named Soccer.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send us a textIn picking her favorite album, author K.L. Doty let us know up front that she couldn't settle on just one -- something which we're all familiar with as music fans, right? So we talk about a lot of different music. But in regards to Disintegration by the Cure, specifically, she shared a thought that will land with many of us who have grown up (I guess that's all of us) and made our way out into the real world, which can maybe be the first real moment where you learn about things like compromise. Prior to the interview, K.L. told us the reason for her love of Disintegration comes back to this: "It reminds me of dreams and all the things I wanted as a child that I ultimately left to go chase."Her story is an interesting one, because she's been chasing a lot of different things for a good amount of time. There's been both happiness and heartbreak -- that's life in a nutshell on some days -- but also, redemption and discovery. Her newest project found her spending the past few years helping former Great White vocalist Jack Russell put his memories on paper and her book was the result of the hours of conversations they had. The True Tale of Mista Bone: A Rock + Roll Narrative was released this summer and is an unvarnished look at Russell's life and career. Through Doty, Russell puts it all out on the table. We enjoyed talking with K.L. to learn about how the book came together, but also, we spoke about her general life journey that has brought her to this point and what's ahead. We hope you enjoy this conversation!Support the show

Mark interviews Cathy Rankin and Ken Mary about Cathy's new single "Now You've Gone." On October 29, 2024, Cathy Rankin released her debut single “Now You've Gone,” featuring renowned musicians David Ellefson (formerly of Megadeth) Ken Mary (formerly of Alice Cooper) and John Ronson. The emotional track, inspired by deeply personal experiences, reflects on themes of love, grief, and ultimately hope. Prior to the interview, Mark shares comments from recent episodes, a personal update, and a word from this episode's sponsor. This episode is sponsored by the 2024 Novel Writing Storybundle - Only available until the end of November 2024.   In the interview, Mark, Cathy, and Ken talk about: Cathy's various family members who are musicians, her first exposure to music when she was young and how that impacted her creative life Getting into theatre, and acting, when she was little, but not having the confidence in music itself The first time Cathy had to perform a singing scene when she was acting in a film The difference between being a performing musician and being a live host Ken's background as a musician having toured with various different artists over the years How being the lead singer might be one of the more difficult positions to be in, since the majority of the audience focus is on them (rather than, for example, the drummer) The concept of the instrument choosing the musician rather than it being the other way around - and how that's the way it was for Ken and playing the drums How playing drums was never "work" for Ken no matter what type of band he was in The great producers that Ken has worked alongside over the years The way that Cathy and Ken first met and started to work together (When Jon Ronson asked Cathy to interview Ken about his most recent album) Cathy showing some of her poems to Ken and getting some feedback on the option to produce one of them into a song How everything in this production unfolded organically and the chemistry of Cathy and the musicians in producing the song The delightful lyrical and musical Easter Eggs that appear in the song The connection between Neil Peart's loss of his daughter and the loss of Cathy's nephew Christian and why the song is a tribute to both their memories What people who want to support the musical artists can do to help out   After the interview Mark reflects on three different things that came up in the conversation, including the magic of organic creativity, the concept of playing a character when on stage, and the value of art, music, poetry, and prose in expressing deep emotion and forging connections. Clips from "Now You've Gone" have been used with permission. Whether on stage, on camera, or in any crowd, Rankin brings a strong female voice to her music on every level. Never one to take a backseat, this force-to-be-reckoned-with doesn't just move fans with her powerful vocals, but also proudly reps the girls while holding her own with the guys. And, in Cathy's case, it's not just any ordinary "guys" that are part of her project, its renowned rockers David Ellefson, bassist (Kings of Thrash, Dieth, formerly of Megadeth), Ken Mary, Drummer/Composer/Producer (Flotsam and Jetsam, Great White, Fifth Angel, formerly of Alice Cooper and House of Lords), and guitarist John Bronson. This formidable line-up is on display on her new single, "Now You've Gone," with more music arriving soon. Cathy's natural inclination for music and performance was evident from an early age when she vowed she would be a singer and actor, and her dream never wavered. Her grandfather first influenced her love of music. An accomplished professional big band musician, he played saxophone, clarinet, flute, piccolo and piano, primarily by ear, practicing in his music room with Cathy paying close attention. This exposure, along with her grandmother, one of the first female violinists in the Scottsdale Symphony, and guidance from her big sister who played drums in the popular 80s metal band, Whiskey Blu, formed the musical foundation that would be a lifelong passion for this songstress. While Cathy's influences were wide-ranging, her original work is deeply rooted in classic rock woven with elements of blues, a touch of prog and at times even country, taking listeners on a journey reminiscent of the iconic frontwomen that defined female rock, such as Nicks, Wilson and Benatar. As a member of popular cover bands, Superhero and Daisy Train, Cathy spent years performing full time for thousands of audiences on countless stages, from Superbowl Fanfest, to corporate events, festivals and the Vegas Strip. Cathy is also co-host of the Metal Hall of Fame with Eddie Trunk (That Metal Show, Trunk Nation), and host of the annual Bubba Bash honoring Neil Peart. And through in-depth interviews with award-winning artists such as John Waite, Geoff Tate, Lita Ford, KIX, Winger, Fifth Angel, and more, Cathy has been able to share that education and inspiration with countless other passionate music fans. Ken K. Mary is an American musician who has worked as a drummer, producer, engineer, and record executive on over thirty-five albums. He has worked in genres from heavy rock to choral music. Mary is best known for his work with acts such as Accept, Fifth Angel, Chastain, TKO, Impellitteri, House of Lords, Bonfire and Alice Cooper, and is currently the drummer of Flotsam and Jetsam and Jack Russell's Great White   The introductory, end, and bumper music for this podcast (“Laser Groove”) was composed and produced by Kevin MacLeod of www.incompetech.com and is Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0

King Crimson, red hair dye and a singing Jack Russell: the boisterous memoir of Jakko Jakszyk

This is an extraordinary story on many levels – about the power and sanctuary of music, about what it took for bands to get noticed in the ‘70s, about how a teenager obsessed with King Crimson eventually joined the band and about the struggles of “a rabid Henry Cow fan trying to get on Top of the Pops”. Jakko Jakszyk is a fabulous storyteller, both in his memoir ‘Who's the Boy With The Lovely Hair?' and on this podcast with the two of us. Among the highlights … … two things musicians need to know.   … why the divisive appeal of music and comedy is so similar. … life in a band where “Stravinsky meets the Barron Knights”. … “Who'll be the singing Jack Russell?” Doing voice-overs as a piece of toast and a baked potato with a Yorkshire accent. ... the quaint Englishness of Soft Machine, Caravan and King Crimson and why they were like “a holiday resort no-one knew about”. … why there are even more idiots in advertising than the music business. … the rigours of the Melody Maker Folk Rock Contest, aged 17, judged by Tommy Vance, Bob Harris and Brian May of Queen. … the militant wing of the Adrian Belew Fan Club. … Dave Robinson's sage advice after telling him he was “unfashionably heterosexual”. ... why Robert Fripp is more Miles Davis than Frank Zappa and the longest audition in history. …the complications of the King Crimson reunion caused by one person who shall remain nameless – “though let's call him Greg Lake”. … “two screaming lead guitars and a trumpet, what could possibly go wrong?” … and working with Pete Sinfield, Peter Hawkins, Sam Brown and Nigel Planer.   Order Jakko's book here:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lovely-Unlikely-Memoir-Jakko-Jakszyk/dp/1838491864Find out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Greg Kihn from The Greg Kihn Band, which was all over MTV in the early 1980's with the legendary video for the single "Jeopardy" and Jack Russell the great lead singer of the late 1980's "hair metal" band Great White, which had hits like "Rock Me" and "Once Bitten, Twice Shy." SERIES 3 EPISODE 9: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Yesterday I said that the USA Today poll that had Vice President Harris down by five Florida was a great indicator of the Democratic tsunami that could be gathering but it's not like she's actually going to WIN Florida, and literally hours later in comes a new poll and she may actually WIN Florida. She's ahead in all but one of the Cook Political Report swing state polls. There are three new national polls (including Monmouth's) in which she's ahead. She's grown the Democratic lead among Latinos from 5% to 19%. Democratic enthusiasm has shot through the roof. She's cut Trump's lead among non-college-educated white people almost in half. It's such a torrent that even Frank Luntz has noticed, says it will soon be time to start figuring out if her coattails will win the House and Senate for the Democrats and “The people who were undecided have all collapsed towards Harris. The entire electoral pool has changed. Kamala Harris has got an intensity advantage, and I haven't seen anything like this happen – in 30 days – in my lifetime.” AND REMARKABLY I'M GOING TO DEFEND TRUMP: Not his campaign, not his hate, not WHAT he said while he was on with Elon Musk. But his claim that the equipment gave him that lisp/slurred words/sibilant 'S'? He's right. Anybody who's ever worked with audio processors designed to improve phone signals knows exactly what happened here. We used to call it 1979 Comrex Martian Disease. I'll explain. B-Block (23:50) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Internet trolls "Gunther Eagleman" and "End Wokeness" complain that the Ilhan Omar primary count didn't go fast enough, then went too fast, then they didn't like the outcome. Laura Ingraham complains Kamala likes curse words when Laura swears like a stevedore. And they play a prank on Liz Truss and she doesn't like it. C-Block (37:10) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Last weekend somebody told me their career was over and asked if anybody ever told me that and I said yeah, in 2016. And 2001. And 1984. Oh and 1977. Haven't gotten me yet.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
