This one is routinely mentioned whenever peeps bring up the world of Disney Channel Original Movies, and the two run a play-by-play of all its worthwhile moments (or, lack thereof) to decide if it's a "Party Pleaser" or "Party Pooper"! Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 25-minutes discussing the Five Nights at Freddy's 2 teaser trailer, discussing mascot-horror, and so much more! (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)The two consider to themselves, "So... are we having fun yet?". The answer: not really. The tech in Smart House is weird, not least of which is the "floor absorbers" which feels like something out of the backrooms.Melvin, "There is not a lot of movie to the movie."Talking about a scene they liked... because there weren't that many. The only things that seem worthwhile are the gadgets (barely) and the drama scenes (of which there are only two).Recommendations:Delicious in Dungeon (2024) (Anime)Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (Movie) Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! We're not just a tech podcast; we're a tech & culture podcast. So today, we’re revisiting the charming and prescient 1999 Disney Channel Original movie Smart House. Directed by the multi-talented Levar Burton, it explores the role of smart home technology on a suburban family from a time when that technology was pure science fiction. It's not only a fun movie, but underneath its G-rated Disney veneer is a movie that has a lot to say about gender, relationships, labor, and the human experience. A major part of the movie is the kids' grappling with the loss of their mother, which hits home for Bridget at this time in her own life. Bridget recaps the film with Producer Mike to explore what it gets right, what it gets wrong, and what it’s trying to say about technology and the people who use it. Do you like film recap episodes like this? Should we do more of them? Should we never do another? Please let us know what you think, and send movie suggestions! Think back to your childhood... Did you have a TV neighbor, friend, or mentor who you trusted? For millions of young people, that person was Luis from Sesame Street, played for over four decades by the legendary Emilio Delgado. In this Rewind episode which originally aired in July of 2020, Emilio discusses becoming a positive role model and even a father figure to kids around the world, even as he was navigating the joys and learning curves of fatherhood himself.Episode 123 of Modern Dadhood explores the powerful impact that television father figures and role models can have on our lives and on our parenting. In this Rewind episode, we're joined by stage and screen actor Emilio Delgado, best known for his decades-long portrayal of Luis on Sesame Street—a beloved character who was an advocate for positive Latino representation in media. Delgado shares insights on becoming aware of his influence as a role model, the importance of portraying authentic families and diversity on television, and his own experiences as a father, adoptive father, and stepfather. The conversation touches on balancing family life with a demanding career, the extended Sesame Street “family” behind the scenes, and integrating personal cultural values into his character. After the interview, Marc shares a side-splitting edition of Did I Just Say That Out Loud? LINKSEmilio Delgado on IMDBEmilio Delgado on WikipediaEmilio's InstagramBaa Baa BambaQuixote NuevoCaspar BabypantsSpencer AlbeeModern Dadhood (website)AdamFlaherty.tvStuffed Animal (Marc's kids' music)MD (Instagram)MD (Facebook)MD (YouTube)MD (TikTok) #moderndadhood #fatherhood #parenthood #parenting #parentingpodcast #dadding #dadpodcast

Hello, neighbor, I mean, Slackers! This week we are going to explore the educational live-action children's shows of the 1970s and 1980s that defined the Generation X experience. These programs were foundational, delivering lessons with creativity and care in an era before digital media. From the community spirit of Sesame Street to the gentle guidance of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, it's all about the shows that made education engaging and actually fun. My personal GOATs? Fred Rogers and Captain Kangaroo! The Electric Company used characters like Morgan Freeman's (!) Easy Reader to teach reading to older children, while Romper Room's Miss Nancy instilled manners through her Magic Mirror. Reading Rainbow, hosted by LeVar Burton, encouraged a love for literature, and Mr. Wizard's World made science accessible with Don Herbert's experiments. Each program contributed to a foundation of curiosity and empathy. There are also a ton of lesser-known shows like Zoom, which empowered children to create their own content, and The Big Blue Marble, which introduced global perspectives. Villa Alegre promoted bilingual learning, and 3-2-1 Contact brought STEM to life. These shows were more than entertainment; they were trusted sources of knowledge and connection for a generation.Available on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, and major streaming platforms. Put on your biggest shoulder pads, your pointy ears and start being secretive because we're looking at one of Star Trek's dastardly duplicitous Romulans and we've recruited Celeste from the Nerd and Tie network to divulge secrets! In ‘The Enterprise Incident,'(TOS) we see Kirk do THE WORST Mission Impossible Mission ever while Spock gets his flirt on, then in ‘The Enemy,' (TNG) we get to see one of SF's greatest performers make the first of three appearances with Andreas Katsulas' Commander Tomalak and Worf ABSOLUTELY kills a guy (and there was definitely a meeting) and then in ‘Eye of the Needle,' (VOY) we discover a tiny wormhole with a Romulan at the end of it and the conversation gets about as mature as you definitely expect. But don't worry, your secrets are safe with us, but only if you rate and review us! Episodes Discussed: The Enterprise Incident (11:31), The Enemy (46:23) and ‘Eye of the Needle' (01:17:35) Talking Points Include: Finding joy despite the horrors, Witch of the Holy Mountain, Dark Shadows, Dan Da Daan, Kirk is just as bad at Metal Gear Solid as Miles, Rom-Face Kirk, Remastered TOS vs original effects TOS, Romulan (and I can't believe I'm saying thing) Cuck Chairs, TNG's strength's as an ensemble show, Andreas Katsulas and an unexpected anime VA, the acting chops of LeVar Burton, Worf DEFINITELY killing a guy and everyone being respectful of his choices, Riker's espresso habits, Harry Kim is definitely ‘quiet quitting his Starfleet career,' where Voyager just squanders it's story potential, the 80s Dungeons and Dragons cartoon, Do you think the world of Star Trek has spam mail? Space is REALLY BIG GUYS and thus We might be one of the few podcasts to ever mention ‘Journey into Space,' Pedant's Corner: No whales were harmed in the recording of this podcast. Grabs your fancy drinks, we're hitting the slopes and tropical beaches with Lower Decks this week. We'll be reviewing season 5, episode 3, "The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel". Also, Netflix makes a big mistake with Star Trek Prodigy. LeVar Burton isn't holding back as he talks about Star Trek Legacy. And Denise Crosby shares what she and Star Trek Picard showrunner Terry Matalas had planned. All that and more on Trekcast. Episode summary:The crew are deployed to remove a nanite swarm in a space hotel, but Mariner is dismayed when the mission is joined by Jennifer Sh'reyan, an ex-girlfriend who Mariner ghosted. Jennifer acts as if they are still dating, and the others encourage Mariner to have a mature conversation and end things. Mariner avoids the confrontation, but her awkward, passive-aggressive behavior lets the nanites get out of control. Jennifer reveals she was just trying to force Mariner to talk about their breakup, and the two apologize. Rutherford finds a way to disable the nanites, discovering that they were controlled by a microscopic Starfleet ship from a parallel universe. Meanwhile, Boimler goes on a mission with Commander Ransom to locate AWOL Starfleet admiral Milius. Boimler suspects Ransom is treating him as cannon fodder, and briefly sides with Milius, who says he left Starfleet out of resentment at being assigned low-prestige missions. Ransom admits that he brought Boimler because he is always prepared and wanted to give him opportunities to showcase his bravery; Boimler subdues Milius, securing the mission. Milius is reassigned to help the microscopic ship return to its universe. I went to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce ceremony for my pal Carl Weathers. (We wrote a script together were friends for 20 years.)  At the ceremony I met some relatives and friends, and told them I might be able to reach out to Carl via our podcast (again.) If one searches his name on this podcast, they'll see the initial interview. But in honor of his family and friends, here's an article that talks about what the ceremony was like: HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES -- Carl Weathers was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this week. On Thursday, the actor, known for his role as boxer Apollo Creed in the "Rocky" films as well as his time as an NFL linebacker for the then-Oakland Raiders, was posthumously honored during a ceremony by his dear friends in Hollywood and sports, including Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis, actress Bryce Dallas Howard and actor LeVar Burton. Carl Weathers' sons Matthew Weathers and Jason Weathers, as well as his partner Christine Kludjian, also paid tribute to him in moving speeches. "My father was an individual with dreams and aspirations," Matthew Weathers said in his speech. "He knew what he wanted at a very young age. He told me on numerous occasions that if he had some money in his pocket as a young man, he'd go to the movies." A picture of Carl Weathers, the late actor renowned for his iconic roles in films such as "Rocky," is displayed on his star as he is honored posthumously on the Walk of Fame. A picture of Carl Weathers, the late actor renowned for his iconic roles in films such as "Rocky," is displayed on his star as he is honored posthumously on the Walk of Fame. "Not a lot of people have the opportunity to do what he did," he added of his father's illustrious career. "He was proud of what he created. So am I. It's hard to imagine that he's not here." Jason Weathers echoed his brother's words about their father and said that he's "so proud" of him. "I wish he could be here to experience this," he continued. "I know he was looking forward to this -- over 50 years in Hollywood, in his career, and now to be immortalized with a star is just truly wonderful." Along with the "Rocky" films, Carl Weathers starred in "Happy Gilmore" alongside Adam Sandler, "Predator" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and more. More recently, he played Greef Karga in the Disney+ series "The Mandalorian" and directed several episodes of the show. Howard, who worked as a director on "The Mandalorian" alongside Carl Weathers, called him a "titan of a man." "Carl was not only one of the central stars of 'The Mandalorian,' he was also one of the show's regular directors," she said. "It astonished me how effortlessly he wore both hats. It was truly remarkable to spin both those plates, acting and directing." "Carl did it with grace, ease and enthusiasm," she added. Burton, meanwhile, called Carl Weathers "the embodiment of a good man." "Carl was also an icon," he added. "A legend. Apollo Creed will go down in history as one of the most popular figures in entertainment history and that is due to the charisma and talent of Carl Weathers." Here's the youtube clip with those speeches... https://www.youtube.com/live/QdVMklVyGK0?si=CH5OPTwMgwsK5-DI&t=1589 I share this information as an old friend of Carl's and some family members and I talked about me sharing this interview later on in the day. It's an example of how easy it is to speak to our loved ones offstage.  Jennifer is very talented at what she does, and because I knew Carl well, as well as the other questions I ask during this podcast, I know that we're hearing new information from someone offstage. There's a great podcast we want to introduce you to today, hosted by our friend Rachel Martin at NPR. It's her new show, called Wild Card, which she describes as “part-interview, part-existential game show.” It's a different way of approaching a celebrity interview, with a special deck of cards that helps shape the conversation. It's a really fun show, and she talks to some really big names, including David Lynch, LeVar Burton, Issa Rae, and US Poet Laureate Ada Limon. Rachel was also a guest on this very podcast recently, and we had a great conversation and even played a little bit of the card game, so go back in your podcast feed and check that out. You can also listen to it here. The Wild Card episode we're sharing with you today features Taylor Tomlinson, who has found the kind of success many comedians dream about, with multiple Netflix specials and a late-night hosting gig — After Midnight on CBS. She tells Rachel that part of the secret to her success is fear. They also swap stories about their Christian upbringings, the search for validation and getting things stuck up their noses. So enjoy this episode, and check out Wild Card wherever you find your podcasts. It's Wembsday dose of Zosny, but Big Wos is a DNP, out with Draft prep. Clipped continues to deliver the messiest, soapiest programming on television as Donald Sterling is banned by the NBA in this episode. The Doc Rivers hero narrative gains major steam as he makes a crucial call to Adam Silver, gets called the 'perfect coach' and celebrates in the sauna with LeVar Burton. It's unclear whether we're supposed to have pity for V Stiviano, who stumbles through her famous Barbara Walters interview, but succeeds in adopting her two kids. Shelly Sterling, after much urging from her lawyers, comes out against Donald and petitions him for divorce, while also taking control of the sale of the team. Finally, after a locker room debate about the implications of the ban, the Clippers players are confronted by a fiery fake Draymond Green. There's a new Banksy museum in New York that has not been approved by the artist, but if he were to sue them he might reveal his closely guarded anonymity, and we are delighted that someone might beat him at his own game. We discuss Kansas City Chiefs' football player Harrison Butker's commencement speech telling women to stifle ambitions, be submissive to husbands, and become mothers, and why the reaction of his coach and teammates (including Taylor Swift's man Travis Kelce) reveal how misogyny is still accepted. We celebrate the Reading Rainbow documentary and the work Levar Burton and the show did to help inspire readers across genders and races. We announce changes to the astrological calendar that might affect which horoscope sign is yours! A town in Texas tried to have the largest gathering of people with the same name, but they failed, and we have some ideas why. We hear what age becomes a person's measure of all things cool, and learn why political affiliation predicts how nostalgic you are. We learn about a new sport called slap fighting, the rules involved, and debate why men enjoy violence.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Stop wasting money on things you don't use. You may think you know LeVar Burton. After starring in the seminal 1977 mini-series Roots, he hosted Reading Rainbow and starred alongside Sir Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: The Next Generation. These days he hosts the podcasts LeVar Burton Reads, in which he reads his favorite short fiction, and Sound Detectives, for kids who want to explore the magic and mystery of sound. But did you know that, as a teenager, LeVar bought steaks and lobsters that “fell off the back of a truck” and brought them home to his mom? Or that he's very particular about his PB&J sandwiches? In this episode, LeVar dishes on Sir Patrick Stewart's weird lunches on the Star Trek set and shares his favorite children's books about food. And as proof that he can make anything he reads sound amazing, LeVar favors us with dramatic readings of recipes. This episode originally aired on September 11, 2017 and November 30, 2020, and was produced by Dan Pashman, Anne Saini, with editing by Dan Charles and engineering help from Jared O'Connell. The Sporkful team now includes Dan Pashman, Emma Morgenstern, Andres O'Hara, Nora Ritchie, and Jared O'Connell.Every other Friday, we reach into our deep freezer and reheat an episode to serve up to you.
