On this episode, we continue our rewatch of Rebels with episodes 6 and 7 of season 1. We also have a couple trivia questions for each other: According to Wookiepedia, how much does a Star Destroyer cost? And, then a 2 parter: Who do Rey's parents leave her with on Jakku, and then who are they killed by thereafter?

Howdy friends! Another episode in the bag. Of course, my lovely brother was kind enough to grace me with his presence. This episode was mid. Not terrible, not great. You can definitely see the writers are beginning to drag out some of the plotlines. Yes, this does help create more mystery. However, it annoyed me more than it intrigued me. You have Osha and Mae. One is trained as a Jedi but doesn't make it. The other is trained by something. Is "The Stranger" (Qimir) a Sith or an Acolyte? What is an Acolyte? Not sure if we're going to find the answer. This episode is broken up into thirds. Osha and Mae have swapped places. Mae, disguised as Osha, is now with Sol. Osha, disguised as Mae, is taken by Qimir aka "The Stranger" (according to Wookiepedia) and is now on an "unknown planet." Master Vernestra leaves Coruscant with another cohort of Jedi to find Sol and his team, who were supposed to bring in Mae. All the while, Sol and Mae are onboard the ship with the tracker. Shortly after they take off, Mae has the opportunity to kill Sol, but he eventually discovers her. He then binds her, and they jump to hyperspace and return to Brendok. At the same time, Master Vernestra arrives at Khofar. She begins to unravel what happened here. We don't really learn much in this episode. The best parts were with Osha and Qimir. We learn why his armor could temporarily nullify a lightsaber. Other than that, we ended pretty much as we started. I'm distracted, so I'll stop rambling. -Luca Connect with Us: Join us on Discord Tweet us @SWRewatchPod on Twitter Subscribe on YouTube Subscribe on Apple Podcasts Subscribe on Spotify #Podcast #Rewatch #StarWars #EpisodeVI #TeachOrCorrupt #Mystery #Jedi #Sith #Osha #Mae #Qimir #TheStranger #Wookiepedia #Vernestra #Coruscant #Brendok #Khofar

And we're back. Thank you for tuning in. Here we are again with another episode of Ahsoka in the bag. It is definitely not notable both episodes debuted on the same day but I am going to bring it up here anyway. Why you might ask? No reason other than fill these opening text crawls with something rather than nothing. We follow up with our heroines Ahsoka, Sabine and Hera as they continue to piece together the mystery of Thrawn and potentially Ezra's location. I have admitted several times on this show I have not watched Clone Wars. However, I am doing my best to rectify that. So much so I am beginning to pick up on subtle references to to Clone Wars. Six episodes will have aired by the time I publish this publish. In that time I kept hearing the name Syndulla and wondering why it sounded familiar. According to the Wookiepedia, Cham first appeared in "Liberty on Ryloth" amongst others. I had no idea he would become such an important character in the franchise that even his descendants would later appear in the Star Wars Universe. In live action no less. Now I am really curious to see what Ahsoka, Sabine, Hera, etc were like in Rebels and how faithfully they have been represented on screen. Look forward to your thoughts and opinions on the show. Wow! This episode takes a left turn that seems to split the fanbase. That is, what's left of The Mandalorian fanbase. If memory serves, Ryan Eary at Screen Crush mentions that half the fans seemed to have abandoned the series, which is unfortunate. This season, instead relying on crossing over characters from other series (Bo Katan) or blatant fan service (Luke Skywalker), the creators are taking a huge risk. Rather, they are beginning to treat the Star Wars franchise similar to the Marvel franchise. Instead of creating each series in a vacuum, they're are zooming out at the galaxy map, and finding out where and when these characters could cross paths along the timeline. Like Marvel Comic heroes, they know each character has their own respective villains, friends, teachers, and all manner acquaintances. These characters also exist in our world. With cities like New York and San Francisco. Many believe part of the reason the Marvel franchise is so successful is due to how it's characters are based in real places. This is in stark contrast to the DC franchise who's characters exist in fictional places based on real world cities of New York (Metropolis) and Chicago (Gotham). Star Wars has no shortage of Expanded Universe characters and storylines to use as a canvas for a television show. I admit my wrong doing when approaching The Mandalorian season three. I was disillusioned by seasons one and two of Mandalorian. I felt there were too many episodes that did not add to the story and were simply filler. This is why I did not even bother to watch The Book of Boba Fett. I had wanted a Boba Fett show the whole time. Instead we got a show with a guy who looked and acted like Boba Fett. But wait! For two seasons we were leaving bread crumbs and subtle hints Boba Fett was there the whole time. In my opinion, the juice was not worth the squeeze. Of course AJ and my brother violently disagree. Fine. Let them. Chapter 19 starts off with a impressive dogfight between Bo Katan's Kom'rk-Class Fighter/transport "The Gauntlet," Din Djarin's modified "N1" Noobian starfighter and some Tie Bombers and Tie Interceptors. After which, the story makes huge departure and instead follow up with a character from season one. Dr. Penn Pershing. Member him? If not for his stupid glasses I wouldn't either. The whole story involves cloning technology he was working on. Tech which was ordered to be destroyed by the New Republic. Instead, we see Pershing attempting to re-integrate into a society free from the tyranny of the Galactic Empire. However, as a scientist, he cannot bare to see his life's work lost despite the good it might yield. Here my brother Mike actually makes himself useful. We ask the question, what happened to the Kaminoans and their cloning facilities. According to Star Wars Battlefront II, the CIS has launched an attack on Kamino in an attempt to destroy the Republic's clone producing facilities. According to the Wookiepedia, this first attack would take place only two months after the Battle of Geonosis. Only in the series The Bad Batch, do we see the cloning facilities on Kamino utterly destroyed by order of Moff Tarkin. Dr. Pershing and his new friend Elia Kane, sneak aboard a decommissioned Star Destroyer to steal lab supplies needed in order to continue research into cloning. It's here we find out that Elia betrayed Dr. Pershing and stole his technology. Only time will tell what she and the alliance plan to do with it. Overall, a great episode in my opinion. Why? It took risks. It dared to do something different. Even if the storyline is a thinly veiled attempt to retcon Rise of Skywalker's Clone Emperor plot holes. Another episode in the bag. Also, we have video podcast! Check us out on Youtube. This past Sunday, the whole gang was together. Luca, AJ and my brother Mike. At your pleasure, to deliver that audible chocolate you know and love. This episode of Andor was very good. Once again, credit goes to the writing staff. Several times throughout this viewing, I wrote down what I thought were several great lines delivered by Cassian, Luthen, and Kino. These well written lines were respectively performed by the likes of Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgard, and Andy Serkis. Clearly the cast is doing a great job with the material they've been provided. Not only do they look like they're having fun but, the set design clearly matches the tones of each scene. One especially chilling exchange takes place between Luthen and and another character who we shall not name here. The setting is dark, cold, and damp. According to the elevator, they are 300+ levels deep on Coruscant. Air is pumped in. All light is artificial. Yet a cool wind brushes by Luthen's black cloak as he coolly speaks this character on a catwalk. Skarsgard is clearly enjoying every moment he can. Andy Serkis also gets his chance to shine this episode. I mention during this broadcast that initially I thought he was going to be more a villain and the prison break would be drawn out to the season finally. Fortunately I was incorrect. In the previous episode Nobody's Listening we saw Andor attempt to bond with Loy. Mostly for selfish reasons but, also we learn more about how dedicated Serkis's character is to maintaining order amongst his men. A close up shot reveals how painful it is for Foy to realize his obedience has been for naught. I'll say it again. This was a great episode. It's had the darkest tone of all so far. We have two episodes left to view. After that, we have all of February to knock those out until Mandalorian Season 3 premiers. Based on all the lightsabers in the trailer I'm really excited to see where they take the series next. Thanks for listening. Also, noticed the blasters the guards were using in the prison were DH-17 which were used by the rebel soldiers on Princess Leia's CR90 Corvette the Tantive IV. I did not know either of those off the top of my head so I'll tweet out the links on to Wookiepedia where I found them. Salutations my fellow Corellians. Not sure why I'm aligning my origin to Corellia. My name is Luca. Luke was raised on Tatooine. He's technically 1/2 Nubian. That's right Nubian not "Naboolian" like the Wookiepedia says! Here's my evidence. Episode I. Tatooine. Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn is inside Watto's Starcraft Parts Store. He asks him for parts to the hyperdrive of Queen Amidala's ship. Both Qui-Gon and Watto refer to the ship as Nubian. The subtitles on Disney+ confirmed as I'm writing this. Speaking of origins, Han is from Corellia. Han sounds German. AJ took German in high school until German 3 Honors. He would later drop that course for the following reason: "All they spoke was German." I am as disappointed as you. What's not disappointing (segue), was this episode. It can be divided into 3 story-lines. The main part follows our hero Cassian and his stint in prison and how he plans to get out. While I find it somewhat cheap how the writers got him into prison, I think they have something special planned for how they get him out. The 2nd part follows around ISB and how they're trying to uncover as much as possible about this "network" of rebels stealing Imperial tech. Their main goal is finding Axis (Luthen). If they find Andor, they think they'll find this central Axis figure tying everything together. The 3rd storyline continues to follow around Mon Mothma. I find her storyline the weakest. The only think interesting is the writers have linked Vel and Mon Mothma directly. Not only as co-conspirators but, family! I am still intrigued as to how their going to solve the problem with the money. They've enlisted another tertiary character Tay Kolma. Now they've mentioned another character with whom Mon Mothma has nothing but disdain. Most likely a gangster. Someone an Imperial Senator would not want to openly be associated. Hopefully this character is as interesting and vile as Mon Mothma's reaction to his name. Time will tell. Why else would they show how elaborate and cruel the containment of the prisoners is? Since their method of imprisonment cleverly prevents escape. Their escape must be equally clever. We have 3 episodes left for Andor to find a way out. The Imperial Security Bureau is looking for him. The Rebels are looking for him. Who will find him first. What will they do when they find him? These questions are not answered in this episode. As I write this, I ask myself why I didn't bring any of this up during the broadcast. I gave myself 24hrs after 2 back to back viewings of the last episode to gather my thoughts. Here I am. The band was formed in 2012 when a few longtime friends and high school classmates got together in a basement to cover their favorite songs. As the band grew and evolved they traded covers for original music and began to develop a live improvisational chemistry that would come to define their sound. They released their debut self-titled EP in January 2015, a blues and garage-rock influenced set that compiles four highlights from the band's early material. After the EP's release, the band took a drastic sonic turn, opting for more lush, mellow, and psychedelic textures. This approach culminated in their first full-length album Live at the Fillmore, released in August of 2016. “FEAR IS THEIR GREATEST DEFENSE!“On this episode of the podcast we take a look behind the scenes of Star Wars: A New Hope. We go back to before it was even called Star Wars. Before George Lucas was even interested in making films in the first place. On this journey through the creative process of not only one of the most profitable movies, but entertainment and merchandise franchises of all time, we see that it all started with a guy and his friends driven to make a movie outside of Hollywood and the studio system. The same movie that would later be owned by one of the biggest Hollwood studios of all time. Ironic isn't it?We go back to George Lucas' time at USC and all of the people he met that would be instrumental in the creation of the first Star Wars movie. We go back to how he met Francis Ford Coppola (director of the Godfather,) the short film that he made that left an impression on Steven Spielberg (Jaws, Jurassic Park,) the help with the famous crawl text he got from Brian De Palma (Carrie, Scarface) and perhaps his most important collaborator, Marcia Lucas (his then-wife) in editing the long, wordy space epic into the movie we know today. We talk about how George Lucas positioned himself to be the owner of his own movie, and how important that fact was in the creation of the franchise, and perhaps how that may have caused the quality of the saga to waver. Thanks to the Wookiepedia, we found several of the early drafts of Star Wars and how concepts like a floating city, a jungle planet, kyber crystals and the names like Mace Windy and Starkiller all existed in early drafts of The Star Wars, but were ultimately cut out and repurposed later on in the expansion of the universe. We talk about the lines that almost were, and also the people that were almost playing the iconic characters. What would famed samurai actor and frequent Akira Kurosawa collaborator, Toshiro Mifune bring to the film by playing Ben Kenobi? Or what about Kurt Russel playing space smuggler, Han Solo? We talk about a lot of ‘what ifs' and ‘could have beens' on this episode, but by the end we discover that the film was never about making the most amount of money possible, it was about taking an audience to a place they hadn't been to before in a film, and unlocking the imagination of the children going to see it. It just happened to make a lot of money on the way. We hope you enjoy this episode! And stay tuned for our next episode on another 70's film, one that may not have had as much money, but has just as long lasting pop culture staying power. A different set of ‘Jaws' if you will..Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

There are several lines that allude to their blindness and growing weakness, but the major one is where Mace Windu states in “Attack of the Clones” that their connection with the force is waning.“Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones - Obi-Wan Kenobi reports to Yoda and Mace” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTFWEHW_REs The Verbivore references the 1970s Star Wars Christmas Special. If you haven't seen it, we definitely don't recommend that you do. That's time you can never get back. :-) But, what we do recommend is the 2020 Lego Star Wars Holiday Special on Disney Plus. https://www.disneyplus.com/movies/lego-star-wars-holiday-special/22xf1U47vVe0 The Verbivore mentions that she thinks that at the end of The Rise of Skywalker Rey's yellow lightsaber and her overall path in the force could point to her being more like a Gray Jedi. Hey Storytellers,Because of Tolkien's influence on RPG's (and countless other video games and books) many game masters feel like they have to write a tome or multi-volume set in order to tell their game.Learn more at https://skullrpg.comGet the free Tell Your Story course here: https://skullrpgbooks.vipmembervault.com/products/courses/view/1047566/?action=signup Instead of writing a 17 page back story tell your players enough information about the world so they know if there are any prohibited classes or a common enemy. So if they will be fighting a standard type of enemy (undead, goblinoid, demons, etc.) then your players need to know.If you want to tell a cool story you don't need to write the Similarian to support book one of the Lord of the Rings, or have the Wookiepedia fleshed out to tell the story of Luke Skywalker.I would say scale that back, unless you really want your players to know that. Then I would have them play out a game session (or many) so that they could uncover that backstory in a way that impacted their day-to-day world and not a blurb in your novella you handed them 8 months ago.Give the episode a listen for more ideas on this to save you time and energy.

BackTrekking returns again to look back at the real-world inspirations of classic Trek episodes! It's the eternal debate, the championship bout for all the credits. . . Star Wars vs. Star Trek: which is better? One seems more suited to conflict; it's literally got "war" in its title. The other's name suggests perhaps a performance fleece and one of those water things you carry on your back with the straw that runs up your sleeve. Assuming you're not mispronouncing it as "track", that is. One conjures images of screaming fans under a sea of waving, day-glo lightsabers, the other a vision of William Shatner yelling at an assemblage of sad men in pointed ears. Put all my money on the 'wars, please. The reality is somewhat more complicated. Trek incontrovertibly arrived first, beaming onto American TV screens on September 8th, 1966 (September 6th, if you were lucky enough to be Canadian). Star Wars premiered on May 25, 1977, fizzling out of some theaters completely before returning several weeks later on a wave of word-of-mouth positivity. Both franchises are clearly indebted to earlier properties. Star Wars famously began life as George Lucas's desire to do a Flash Gordon-esque space adventure after he lost out on directing the genuine article. Star Trek was preceded by space travel shows and even genre-themed social commentary series, but draws most of its inspiration from Horatio Hornblower novels and Gulliver's Travels (weirdly). Star Trek influenced Star Wars, full stop. George Lucas has said as much, although it was probably within earshot of Gene Roddenberry and its greatest influence may have been Lucas saying "Well, I don't want to do *that*." Star Wars, in turn, influenced Star Trek by making $220 million in its initial box office run (almost $900 million in 2020 bucks). Screw Star Trek: Phase II; Trek was going back to theaters with the entire original cast intact and it was going to be gritty this time! Colors would be drab, the technology more crunchy, two people would be melted by the friendly transporter. Star Trek: The Motion Picture would go on to make $139 million after spending 5 times the budget of Star Wars, which would effectively end Roddenberry's involvement with the franchise until the development of The Next Generation 8 years later. He'd still hang around but be mostly ignored as Trek cinema continued to chase Star Wars and its ever-increasing returns. It wasn't until 1986, when Star Wars had left the cinematic field, that Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home would earn $133 million, 6 times its budget, proving definitively that a Star Trek film can be a runaway success as long as George Lucas is counting money instead of making movies. So who wins? Which is superior: Star Wars or Star Trek? Well, the show isn't called BackWarsing . . . you figure it out.On this episode, we talk about the Star Wars and Star Trek and what defines them, the surprising artistry of the original trilogy, the perfect casting of Star Wars, the series's light-touch spirituality, the magnetic momentum of the narrative, how TMP served as a template for future Trek films, the breathtaking mise-en-scene of V'ger, the film's theme of self-examination, and staying close to your roots. We also discuss the bone-headed changes of the Special Editions, whether or not we live on a TOS planet-of-the-week, how George Lucas is the biggest Star Wars fan, having too many chores to Antifa, laser sword-fighting a space wizard, editing Wookiepedia, vibe check on Vader, googling "the motion picture", turning Spock off and on again, neck pinch acting, V'ger's info was boring, and the etiquette of starship interaction.Who's behind this Maclunkey?Get Star Wars and Star Trek: The Motion Picture on Blu-ray!https://amzn.to/3cUod4Chttps://amzn.to/2yc39bcJoin us in the Just Enough Trope Discord!https://discord.gg/EAx5VGXTweet at the show or your hosts with your suggestions for future episodes!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkinghttp://www.twitter.com/ka1ibanhttp://www.twitter.com/gooeyfameCheck out the other shows on the Just Enough Trope network!http://www.justenoughtrope.comTheme: Disco Medusae Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

The Beige and The Bold

I usually bring up when TNG goes for some of the harder-edged stuff folks accuse it of never going for, but while this one has some real elbows out, it feels softer-edged than other instances and I don't know why. We need to stop catsuits and start bras. When Carrie Fisher died, lots of newspapers reported that she wanted her death reported as “drowned in moonlight, strangled by her own bra” because of a ridiculous conversation she had with George Lucas about there being no bras in Star Wars. Wookiepedia says differently, of course: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Brassiere Are we off in seeing the potential for class playing into the “chess vs poker” debate? Could 3D chess be a set of tools like a deck of cards and not one game, like conventional chess?

This month Erin and Rhonda take on one of the biggest pop culture phenomena of our time: Star Wars. We discuss the saga’s connections to both the past and the future, through its ties to folklore and mythology, its profound influence on effects and technology in filmmaking, and the Shakespearean threads woven throughout the series, as well as our undying love for Han Solo and Poe Dameron. Listen now, and may the Force be with you.*Note: In the episode, I say that I believe that Star Wars Legends is a series of comic books that takes place thousands of years prior to the cinematic timeline, but this is not completely correct. Star Wars Legends, according to Wookiepedia, the Star Wars wiki, “encompasses every one of the officially licensed, fictional background stories of the Star Wars universe, outside of the original six Star Wars films produced by George Lucas and certain other material such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars, created before April 25, 2014,” in other words, every Expanded Universe story that Disney declared non-canonical when it bought Star Wars. However, Legends material does include stories that take place “anywhere from over 36,000 years before The Phantom Menace to 136 years after Return of the Jedi,” so that must be where I got the idea of what I thought Legends was. Anyway, enjoy the episode!Links:The Cinema Behind Star Wars: The Hidden FortressThis Nerdist article about Star Wars and The Hidden FortressVideos with side-by-side comparisonsHow the Samurai inspired the JediThe Hero with a Thousand FacesHow to Be a HeroineLinguistics of YodaWhy does Yoda speak the way he does?Making MonstersWilliam Shakespeare’s Star WarsStar Wars Reading ChallengeSubscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAMYOU CAN READ OUR BLOG HERE: THEPOPDNA.BLOG

Like a phoenix from the ashes, we resurrect the now non-canon Ewok Celebration or, as everyone else knows it, "Yub Nub".  For those of you who didn't see or don't remember the 1983 theatrical release of Return of the Jedi, the film ended with a tribal melody by John Williams to emphasize the awesomeness of a party in the Ewok village.  When re-released in theaters as the Special Edition in 1997, this scene was heavily edited including the removal of Ewok Celebration for the more somber Victory Celebration.  Less fuzzy puppets chanting is not a good thing! You can read a bit more about the change here. Well, I say that the updated version is non-canon.  Long live Yub Nub!! And, for you, the loyal listeners, you can now download the original ending music to your hard drive where George Lucas can never find it.  And hey, while you're at it, check out the actual scene from the movie.  I still get chills every time I watch it.  Interested in knowing what the Ewoks are saying? You can read the Ewok-ese lyrics below (check out Wookiepedia if you want to see the English translation) below the video player. Thanks to Erwin Tang for offering to share his copy of Ewok Celebration.  I managed to get it from my DVDs with some technological trickery, but anyone that friendly deserves a site visit.Ewok Celebration (Yub Nub)Yub nub, eee chop yub nub;Ah toe meet toe peechee keene,G'noop dock fling oh ah.Yahwah, eee chop yahwah;Ah toe meet toe peechee keene,G'noop dock fling oh ah.Coatee cha tu yub nub;Coatee cha tu yahwah;Coatee cha tu glowah;Allay loo ta nuv.Glowah, eee chop glowah;Ya glowah pee chu nee foom,Ah toot dee awe goon daa.*Coatee cha tu goo; (Yub nub!)Coatee cha tu doo; (Yahwah!)Coatee cha tu too; (Ya chaa!)Allay loo ta nuv,Allay loo ta nuv,Allay loo ta nuv.Glowah, eee chop glowah.Ya glowah pee chu nee foomAh toot dee awe goon daa.* Coatee cha tu goo; (Yub nub!)Coatee cha tu doo; (Yahwah!)Coatee cha tu too; (Ya chaa!)Allay loo ta nuv,Allay loo ta nuv,Allay loo ta nuv,Allay loo ta nuv.So download the song, translate the lyrics, watch the clip, hug your favorite Ewok stuffed animal (Wicket for life, yo), share the file with a friend so Yub Nub lives on in perpituity, and join us tomorrow for a special bonus episode to celebrate the release of Star Wars - The Force Awakens.
