What does a Shire full of hobbits in Middle-Earth, a county full of farmers in Kentucky, and a wardrobe full of a lion have in common? For Russell Moore and singer/songwriter/author Andrew Peterson, they were all a way to find home. In this episode—recorded inside Peterson's book-lined Chapter House in Nashville, right down the road from Moore—the two talk about the authors who, by God's grace, helped hold their faith together when it could have come apart. From the wisdom of Wendell Berry to the imagination of C.S. Lewis to the honesty of Frederick Buechner, these authors gave a clarity that helped these two keep the faith. This isn't just a literary conversation. It's about how God uses stories, sentences, and sometimes even sword-wielding mice to reach people in moments of doubt, disillusionment, or despair. Along the way, they talk about what it means to read widely, to hold onto wonder, and to be the kind of Christian who can still be surprised by joy. They also somehow end up talking about Moby Dick, Dungeons & Dragons, and how ChatGPT was wrong and right about what books each of them would take to a desert island. Books and authors mentioned in this episode include: Jayber Crow by Wendell Berry A Room Called Remember and Telling Secrets by Frederick Buechner The Chronicles of Narnia, Till We Have Faces, Mere Christianity, and more by C.S. Lewis Godric by Frederick Buechner David Copperfield by Charles Dickens Four Quartets by T.S. Eliot Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings A Long Obedience in the Same Direction by Eugene Peterson Moby Dick by Herman Melville Reading Genesis by Marilynne Robinson The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction by Alan Jacobs And selections from Andrew's own works: Adorning the Dark, The God of the Garden, and The Wingfeather Saga Whether you're deep in faith, on the brink of losing it, or just looking for something beautiful to read, this conversation will remind you why the right book at the right moment can do more than explain—it can point to new life. This is it! It's all 6 Dune books and their supercuts smashed into one. You probably could actually summarize the series from this 2 hour trek. Thanks to everyone who continues to support us! On 6th December 1964, Dr Martin Luther King Jr preached to a packed St Paul's Cathedral. On a flying visit on his way to Norway to collect his Nobel Peace Prize, he addressed a congregation of 4,000 people on The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life, providing the British public with a rare opportunity to hear him in person. Afterwards he gave a press conference in the Cathedral's Chapter House about race relations in the UK. Marking the 60th anniversary of this historic visit, Senator Revd Raphael Warnock reflects on what Martin Luther King has to say to us today. The Revd Dr Raphael Warnock is a Democratic Senator and the Senior Pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta where Martin Luther King also served as Pastor. In 2021 he was elected to the United States Senate, the first African American to represent Georgia and the first Black Democrat to be elected to the Senate from a Southern State.
This week we wrap up our discussion of Chapterhouse: Dune. We leave the series on a bit of a downer note with our heroes (or whatever we would call them) taking off in a No Ship while the Bene Gesserit and Honored Matre leadership becomes one. The villains of this trilogy reveal themselves to be some higher level of Face Dancer, something beyond anything we've ever seen before. How will our heroes defeat this new threat and the transformation of an old threat? Will they need to call upon their Super Mentat and Super Ghola powers, that will surely be explained in the finale, and merge them with our past protagonists? Will all of humanity be merged into some sort of new super organism and finally take us to the end of the Golden Path and to, perhaps, something even the God Emperor himself couldn't see with all of his prescience? Find out... never. Yeah, big bummer. Turns out they're just robots now and two untalented hacks finish the series. Welcome back, Dune fanatics! This week, Ben and Nate tackle the mind-bending first half of Frank Herbert's Chapterhouse: Dune. With the Bene Gesserit teetering on the edge of annihilation and the Honored Matres breathing down their necks, Chapterhouse is all that stands between the Sisterhood and total extinction. As expected, Herbert spins a web of political intrigue, philosophical quandaries, and ecological puzzles that only he could imagine—or make us question why we're still trying to unravel them. We'll dig into the high-stakes drama facing the Bene Gesserit, ponder the curious case of Duncan Idaho (again), and debate what Herbert was really trying to say about the future of humanity—or if he was just messing with us all along. As usual, our analysis comes with a side of sharp wit and a good dose of snark. And, of course, we can't talk about Dune without addressing the elephant in the room: Brian Herbert. Let's just say that if literary talent were genetic, Brian might have gotten the recessive genes. Frank Herbert's legacy casts a long shadow, and Brian's efforts to carry the torch are, well… let's just say some things are better left untouched. So gear up for a journey through the weird and wonderful world of Dune. If you're a fan of the series—or just enjoy watching us dissect a good book—this is an episode you won't want to miss.Words About Books: Where the spice flows, and our critiques are as brutal as a Bene Gesserit truthsay. This episode's summary was generated by AI: the real enemy all along! Don't trust machines! That's the real message of Dune! There's no hidden meaning! There are no themes! There's nothing but the one obvious message! Robots bad! "Whitelined" Formed in Barnum, Colorado in the early oughts by pals Ryan Policky and Erik Jeffries, A Shoreline Dream wasted no time in establishing themselves as a band to be reckoned with. No scruffy apprentice years here--albums like Avoiding The Consequences and Losing Them All To This Time were fully formed blasts of bruising guitars drenched in pure sonic muscle. Not only that, but lurking behind the sheets of fuzz was an undeniable pop center that, nearly twenty years later has never sounded more assured. The follow-up to their brilliant 2022 Loveblind album is called Whitelined and not only is it a masterpiece of musical architecture, and swerving beauty, it's got a little backstory. The fellas in A Shoreline Dream happened to meet Ride's Mark Gardener at a Denver gig and a friendship turned into a working relationship as well and the ideas started whipping back and forth and this album is a perfect blend of their musical union. A Shoreline Dream have opened for Chapterhouse, played South By Southwest, covered Fleetwood Mac and had their music used in a British GQ ad. www.ashorelinedream.bandcamp.com www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
The inspiration for this week's mixtape is down to correspondence with John Matthews, a person whose musical knowledge and taste I trust more than most. The inclusion of Fat White Family remixed by Arab Acid? That was John. Also while listening to the Face Radio this week- on The London Hippy I heard Barcelona duo Magik Brother & Mystic Sister, and on The Free Design a song by Chapterhouse - and they sounded so great, I was inspired to play different tracks by these bands. As spring turns to summer and the flowers bloom, it's a mixtape full of dream pop, shoegaze and psychedelic folk, sounds to drift away in a field of flowers. Get the earbuds on and walk the dog, or just listen.Music; Yellowman, Big Audio Dynamite, Magik Brother & Mystic Sister, The Cure, Chapterhouse, Fat White Family, Acid Arib, Spiritualized and loads more. Mark Wells in conversation with Jordan Sorcery. We explore a period of incredible change in the organisation as it shifts from the 90s approach of 2 core games (Warhammer Fantasy & Warhammer 40,000) with specialist games like Gorka Morka, Necromunda, and Mordheim alongside them, to the 2000s focus on 3 core systems - Warhammer Fantasy Battle, 40K, and the Lord of the Rings.During Mark's tenure at the company there were many exciting, challenging, and at times controversial decisions, changes, and products. This was the era that saw the rise of the internet, the legal wrangles with Chapter House, the end and then return of the boxed game (and one of the best GW ever made in Space Hulk 3rd edition), the introduction of one-man retail stores, and a host of other inflection points in the story of Games Workshop.Support my work:Patreon [https://www.patreon.com/jordansorcery]Element Games Affiliate Link [https://elementgames.co.uk/?d=11216]Download my Fantasy Battle Scenario: Dead King Wenceslas [https://jordansorcery.itch.io/dead-king-wenceslas]Ko-Fi [https://ko-fi.com/jordansorcery]Discord [https://discord.gg/vtjKzTGevD]This episode was originally released via YouTube: https://youtu.be/jh3o-BkXpNw

Bier! André once again dips into the extremely talented pool that is the Toronto based comic art scene to chat with a talented and vibrant creator!Paris Alleyne is a Toronto-based comic-book artist. He has done work as a colourist for Ninja Turtle, Ghostbuster, GI Joe, Captain Canuck, and Riftworld comics. His art has appeared in Marvel, DC, IDW, Chapterhouse, Black Comix Returns and his own independent Haven comics. Paris speaks about noticing the power of art in comics with an unconventional Superman story, why art was always his end goal and how important it was to him to carve his own path as an artist aside from his work as a colourist.
Author and passionate genealogist William "Bill" Cole was in the Chapter House studio to talk more about his latest book, Puritans, Plagues, and Promises. You'll want to listen to our part 1 podcast and part 2 podcast if you haven't already. That conversation covered Bill's ancestors and their involvement in the Puritan Movement, which was an important piece of Christian history. Along the way, we also talked about King Henry VIII, the Church of England, the dreaded "Star Chamber," and religious freedom. Here in Part 3, we talk about his ancestors in the families Cole, Clarke, and Collier. Bill describes his ancestors' lives in Southwark, where London Bridge meets the south bankside of the River Thames. Bill's 9th great-grandmother, born Jane Yates in 1587, survived 4 plagues and 17 childbirths. William Collier, Jane's husband, was a successful merchant who invested in the Mayflower and supported Plymouth Colony. Bill describes Mayflower's troubled voyage and his two ancestors on the ship who helped establish Plymouth Colony. This offers a rare glimpse of the Mayflower story from of two sides: the passengers and the investors. His two Mayflower ancestors, Stephen and Constance Hopkins, were joined by the Collier family and the Cole brothers in Plymouth Colony in the 1630s. Trials, tribulations, political turmoil, economic incentives including land ownership, and religious freedom all intersect with the promises offered by life on a pristine continent. It's a story that's both personal and yet sweeping in the scope of English and American history. Join us!

This week, we're tracing the story of a historic heist. But it's not the one from the 1660s involving the Crown Jewels and the Tower of London that some people might recognise. This raid dates back more than 700 years to 1303 and the reign of King Edward I, taking place in unlikely surroundings. Helping us piece together the story are English Heritage's head properties curator Dr Jeremy Ashbee and medieval historian Sally Dixon-Smith. For more information about Chapter House and Pyx Chamber or to plan a visit, go to www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/chapter-house-and-pyx-chamber.

Author and passionate genealogist William "Bill" Cole was in the Chapter House studio to talk about his latest book, Puritans, Plagues, and Promises. It'd be a fascinating enough-- and historically consequential-- story if it was about someone else's ancestors. But that the tale involves his own family and an important piece of Christian history makes Bill's story all the more remarkable. In this first of what we hope will be several conversations, we talk about King Henry VIII, the Church of England, the dreaded "Star Chamber," and religious freedom. Join us!

Stephen Patman in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.cherryred.co.uk/product/chapterhouse-chronology-albums-singles-b-sides-remixes-demos-6cd-deluxe-box-set/ British shoegaze band - Formed in 1987 by Andrew Sherriff and Stephen Patman, the band began performing alongside Spacemen They released two albums: Whirlpool (1991) and Blood Music (1993). The group temporarily reformed in 2008 after being asked to join Ulrich Schnauss onstage to perform his cover version of their song "Love Forever" at the Truck Festival in Oxfordshire. The band finished the brief reunion with two gigs in London (2009–2010) and tours in North America and Japan in 2010.
Chapterhouse were one of the premiere bands to come out of that shoegaze scene of the early 90s in the UK. They were experts at mixing shimmery, psychedelic guitars with acid-house drum samples taking listeners on deep mental and emotional journeys. Guitarist Stephen Patman joins us this week to discuss the new 6-disc box set Chronology coming out this week! We also get into the history of the band, why it only lasted two albums, (Whirlpool and Blood Music, both excellent) and what those wild days were like. End of the line for the Genre boys as we are left without another entry in the series. What will we do now? Where can we turn? A discernible note of gloom descends over us in this episode — indeed, it was not so much the end of Dune, as it was the end of our careless youth.
Toronto-London based experimental group The Flowers Of Hell have announced that they will release their new album 'Keshakhtaran' via UK cult label Space Age Recordings (home to Spacemen 3, as well as Spectrum, Chapterhouse, Acid Mothers Temple and The Telescopes). Ahead of this, they present ‘Foray Through Keshakhtaran', the first taste of the trans-Atlantic group's first studio album in six years. A tripped out instrumental journey in two 20-minute parts, this record involves 20 artists, including special guests Rishi Dhir (Elephant Stone, Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Black Angels, Beck) on sitar, Montreal harpist Sarah Pagé, and avant-accordion legend Angel Corpus Christi (Suicide, Spiritualized, Dean Wareham). Produced by the band's leader and composer Greg Jarvis, this album was mastered by Grammy recipient Peter J. Moore (Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Joe Strummer). For the past 18 years, The Flowers Of Hell have traversed the experimental edges of indie, Classical and jazz, with music often rooted in the audio-visual synesthesia of the group's mastermind, Greg Jarvis. Despite relative obscurity, they have been championed by music legends such as Lou Reed, Sonic Boom, Kevin Shields and members of The Legendary Pink Dots, Death In Vegas, The Wedding Present, The Fugs and The Plastic People Of The Universe, not to mention support from NASA's mission control team and the Tate Gallery with an album installation and concert just a fortnight before London locked down. #NewMusic #Legends #Interview

Digital healthcare delivery has exploded over the last several years and digital MSK is part of this massive growth. We know that digital MSK services are more convenient for members and can provide more accurate data on outcomes than in-person traditional physical therapy services. We've heard from one other digital MSK company about 6 months ago so now is a good time to get a different perspective and understand how this industry is changing and where it is headed. With me is Mark Luck Olson, who is the CEO of RecoveryOne. If the name Mark Olson sounds familiar, it's because Mark is a former owner and managing partner of Chapter House which was acquired many years ago by Oliver Wyman and where he served a partner. I have always admired Mark's ability to see the big picture and at the same time, understand the details and nuances of healthcare. I am looking forward to getting Mark's perspective on how digital healthcare and digital MSK fit into the healthcare ecosystem. Iconic shoe gaze/postpunk collective A Shoreline Dream Ryan Policky and Erik Jeffries just released the full LP called "Loveblind" via Latenight Weekend Records following their critically acclaimed album "Melting" (2020). The sixth full-length album from the prog-goth shoegazers dives into the recollections and desires of the past while gazing in a wash of sound waves pointed towards a blinding future. Recorded from November 2021 - July 2022 in the Barnum suburb of Denver, Colorado, the single previously released "Alarms Stop Ringing" is accompanied by a video filmed at the Best Little Boarding House and Black Monarch Hotel in Victor, Colorado. The Black Monarch is a goth hotel dream-come-true, frequented by Nikola Tesla back in his day, and The Best Little Boarding House is a converted brothel that is probably the most haunted place in the city (Just try staying asleep through the night!)," says Ryan Policky. Over the years, A Shoreline Dream has churned out numerous acclaimed releases, working with legends such as Ulrich Schnauss, Mark Kramer and The Engineers (for whom they created a remix for progressive label gods K-Scope). They also opened for Chapterhouse for their very final appearance. 'Loveblind' reaches for that same energy, taking cues from previous A Shoreline Dream works released over the past 16 years, drawing more from their progressive goth roots. Layers of moodiness, blissfulexplosions of rock and chugging tempo mix with the pain, love, hope and moments of neardeath experienced while creating the album itself. https://www.ashorelinedream.com/index_loveblind.htmlhttps://ashorelinedream.bandcamp.comListen to my previous interview with Ryan Policky (DJ Nocturna podcast August 11, 2020)https://www.buzzsprout.com/399616/4948565Subscribe to my monthly mailing list for the latest music news, updates and my next interviews and events:http://eepurl.com/gtw6PPPlaylist and podcast: https://djnocturna.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DJNocturnaListen : http://modsnapradio.com#modsnapradio #postpunk #goth #industrialmusicl

In this episode, we take a look at chapters thirty-nine through forty of Chapterhouse: Dune, in which Odrade makes what she expects to be her final farewells to Chapterhouse and the Sisterhood as she journeys to her meeting with the Honored Matres, the Mother Superior's favorite pilot Clairby makes an unexpected appearance as the cyborg pilot for the trip to Junction, Miles oversees a devastatingly effective attack on Gammu, and Murbella intervenes in order to ensure that the Bene Gesserit's forces honor ancient agreements and take in the refugees from Rebecca's group - finally giving the wild Reverend Mother the chance to return the millions of memories from Lampadas that Lucilla had entrusted to her.

In this episode, we take a look at chapters twenty-five through twenty-seven of Chapterhouse: Dune, in which Odrade gets at least halfway to see Sheeana out in the desert, Spider Queen exults in her ascendancy but seems to start to fall into the Sisterhood's Dortujla trap, Duncan makes the case for his life to a murderous Bellonda, and Odrade decides to sacrifice one of Chapterhouse's remaining seas - after going skinny dipping in it, as one does in front of all of one's underlings on a work trip.
I guess we are back on a roll..this week back in the 1991 pocket with the band Chapterhouse and their stone cold classic record "Whirlpool". Melissa decided after the epic Dead Can Dance episode to hone this one in a bit and just focus on one record from this band that she loves. Even if you have never heard of Chapterhouse you have heard their influence on 90's era "alt-rock" and hiphop. Check it out it'll only take you an hour this time and you might just get up off your duff and shake it a little bit!! This weeks's Chapterhouse "Whirlpool" mix is no really a mix but rather the whole album plus a couple tracks demonstrating the two separate releases and the quality difference on the tracks. Listen to the episode to hear what we are talking about. We suggest you listen to the YouTube music playlist as that has the tracks Melissa uploaded from her copy of Whirlpool. Spotify does not allow us to upload music. YouTube Music Mix | Spotify mix

In this episode, we take a look at chapters thirteen through fifteen of Chapterhouse: Dune, in which the Mother Superior has dinner in the Chapterhouse dining hall and meets a promising acolyte named Streggi, Murbella has the startling revelation that she sincerely wants to become a Bene Gesserit, Odrade and her advisors conduct an inspection of various aspects of Central, and she decides to reveal to them that her plan is to immediately recover the original Miles Teg's memories in his child ghola…which we can only hope is a less traumatic experience than it was for Duncan, though that seems unlikely.

In this episode, we take a look at chapters forty-six and forty-seven of Heretics of Dune, in which Miles leads a suicide mission against the Honored Matres on Rakis to allow various key Bene Gesserit personnel to escape, all or most Rakian life is obliterated and only a single sandworm taken to Chapter House seems to have survived, Duncan is under no-ship arrest and turns out to have knocked up the scheming Murbella, and current Reverend Mother Superior Odrade plots how to best lead her Sisterhood despite not having universal support and having lost Taraza - though the former Mother Superior remains a voice in her head, with Dar nevermore being fully parted from Tar.
