Los agentes de la policía que investigaban la desaparición el 17 de noviembre de 1957 de Bernice Worden, propietaria y dependienta de la ferretería de Plainfield (Wisconsin), sospecharon que Ed Gein estaba implicado en el caso. Entre otros macabros hallazgos, encontraron también diez calaveras a las que les había quitado la parte superior para servir de tazones y ceniceros, pantallas de lámparas y asientos hechos de piel humana, platos de sopa hechos con calaveras, más calaveras en los postes de su cama, los órganos de Bernice en el refrigerador, un cinturón de pezones humanos, una caja de zapatos con nueve vulvas y muchos más objetos hechos de partes de cuerpos humanos.​ Todos estos objetos fueron fotografiados y destruidos. Al ser interrogado, Ed Gein admitió que abría las tumbas de mujeres recientemente fallecidas y robaba los cuerpos, llevándolos con su furgoneta a su casa donde curtía las pieles para hacer sus posesiones. También admitió haber asesinado a Mary Hogan, una camarera desaparecida desde 1954. Nunca fue probado ni admitido por él que cometiera canibalismo, y también negó haber tenido relaciones sexuales con las muertas, aduciendo que «olían muy mal». Fue declarado enfermo mental y pasó el resto de sus días en una institución psiquiátrica donde se destacó por su buen comportamiento. Falleció en el verano de 1984, a la edad de 77 años por insuficiencia respiratoria.

When Ed Gein's arrest and what the authorities found in his house was a shock to the America of the 1950s. Gein was just another resident of Plainfield, Wisconsin, but his house was a house of horrors. His neighbors and acquaintances realized how disturbed this man indeed was.Raised by an alcoholic father and a religious fanatic mother living in an isolated farmhouse, Gein was raised in a repressive household and molded to have an unnatural rejection of normal urges.His mental health issues took shape once his mother died when Ed Gein was in his thirties. He became unhinged and dangerous, and people became missing. The discovery of his crimes and his house of horrors shocked everyone. This was the first time people were confronted with the idea of necrophilia.His story became the inspiration for writer Robert Bloch who wrote the novel Psycho which was adapted into the classic film directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
