Send us a textOn this episode of Speaking Of…College of Charleston, we have a great conversation with Joe Kelly, director of Irish and Irish American Studies and Colleen Glenn, director of film studies at the College about Irish books and movies. The colleagues first met playing softball with faculty from the English department and quickly became friends. They put their heads together and took a group of students to Ireland for a study abroad program, traveling from Dublin to Galway.“When we do those visits, the students follow our discussions of films, like In The Name of the Father and they're really able to see the landscape and the culture that inspired the movie they they saw on the big screen,” says Glenn. They recount trips around Ireland, emphasizing locations featured in Irish films such as Dublin, Galway, Connemara, and Belfast. Films discussed include The Quiet Man, Michael Collins and Banshees of Inisherin among others, illustrating the socio-political history and cultural identity of Ireland. The episode also touches on significant Irish cinematic movements and celebrates the storytelling legacy and literary richness of Irish culture. The way Kelly's describes the landscape, and the novels are a clear indicator of his knowledge and love for the country. He's an in-demand professor for a reason.“John Huston did a film version of The Dead, which is a very quiet story,” says Kelly. “And it ends with this beautiful scene where Gabriel Conroy is looking out the window at the snow falling onto the streets of Dublin and he imagines it falling across the mutinous Shannon waves and the bog of Allen and out onto the crooked crosses in the graveyard where Michael Furey lay buried. It's the most beautiful prose I've ever read and it's a absolutely beautiful 10 minutes of cinematography too.”Featured on this Episode:Joe Kelly, director of Irish and Irish American Studies at the College of Charleston, has been studying and writing about Irish literature since the 1990s, and in the last fifteen years he's been writing narrative histories about American democracy. His next book, The Biggest Lie: A Hundred Years of American Fascism, 1818-1918, will be out this time next year.Colleen Glenn, director of film studies at the College, teaches courses on film history and American Cinema as well as special topics courses on topics like Irish Cinema & Hollywood Auteurs. In addition to co-editing an anthology on stardom, she has published on Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Stewart, and other film stars.Irish movies mentionedThe Quiet Man (John Ford, 1952)The Crying Game (Neil Jordan, 1992)In the Name of the Father (Jim Sheridan, 1993)Michael Collins (Neil Jordan, 1996). The Wind That Shakes the Barley (Ken Loach, 2006 '71 (Yann Demange, 2014). Hunger (Steve McQueen, 2008). The Field. (Jim Sheridan, 1990)**Banshees of Inisherin. This week, I'm recommending four movies that have some connection to Ireland, whether through folklore, setting, or just a certain Irish sensibility. There's a mix of fantasy, horror, family-friendly adventure, and romantic drama, so no matter what you're in the mood for, you might find something here to check out.The Secret of Roan Inish (1994) – A quiet, beautifully filmed story about a girl uncovering her family's past on a small Irish island. Directed by John Sayles, it weaves folklore into everyday life in a way that feels completely natural. The cinematography captures the beauty of the Irish coast, and the film has a slow, almost dreamlike quality. It's based on the book Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry, but Sayles changed the setting to Ireland and made it feel like an old story passed down through generations. If you like films that take their time and let you soak in the atmosphere, this is one to watch.Note: I am not sure why I cannot properly differentiate the syllables when I pronounce Roan Inish. I kept trying to say it with two syllables in a natural way, but when it did it blends. Not sure why.Leprechaun (1993) – A horror-comedy that leans into its absurd premise and I love it! Warwick Davis plays the title character, and his performance is a big part of what makes the movie memorable. The film was originally meant to be more of a straight horror movie, but as they shot it, they leaned into the campy humor. This was Jennifer Aniston's first film role, before Friends made her famous, and it's fun to see her in an early ‘90s horror setting. The movie spawned a long series of sequels so if you enjoy this kind of thing, there's a lot more to watch. The Luck of the Irish (2001) – A Disney Channel Original Movie that a lot of people remember from childhood. It follows a teenager who finds out he's part leprechaun, which leads to some strange changes in his life. Like a lot of early 2000s Disney Channel movies, it has a mix of comedy, adventure, and a little bit of sports. The villain, played by Timothy Omundson, gives an over-the-top performance that makes the movie more fun than it probably should be. If you grew up watching it, it's a nostalgic rewatch, and if you haven't seen it, it's an interesting look at the kind of family movies Disney was making at the time.Only the Lonely (1991) – A romantic dramedy starring John Candy in a more low-key role. In it, he plays a Chicago cop dealing with his overbearing mother, played by Maureen O'Hara, while trying to start a relationship with a shy funeral home worker, played by Ally Sheedy. O'Hara came out of retirement for this film, and she still had the same screen presence she had in movies like The Quiet Man. Chris Columbus directed this, right around the time he was making Home Alone, and you can see a similar mix of warmth and humor. It's an underrated John Candy performance, showing more depth than his usual comedic roles. If you like movies that balance comedy with a little drama, it's worth checking out. That's this week's recommendations. If you end up watching any of these, let me know what you think and remember someone will be back behind the counter next week with four more recommendations. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Zdravo.

Sophia and Nick return for an historic episode to discuss the director with the most Oscar wins and the first to win consecutively: John Ford. Revered by many filmmakers throughout history and known for his Westerns, Ford blazed a trail that also showcased his Irish background, his actors- many of whom also won Oscars- and the fractured American Dream. They begin with a thorough history of his illustrious career before reviewing The Informer, the 1935 film for which he won his first Oscar. Even though he didn't win for Stagecoach four years later, he was successful the following year with The Grapes of Wrath (28:34). Steinbeck's classic novel created a perfect tapestry for his next directorial feat. It's the final days of 2023 and therefore time for us once again to reflect on all of the amazing music released this year. 2023 will go down in We Dig Music history as the year Tracey went Pop, Colin went cynical, And Ian continued submitting doom metal songs almost as long as the rest of the playlist put together. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Bell WItch, Blink 182, Boygenius, The Bug Club, Cloth, CLT DRP, Craven Faults, Crosses, Darkher, Doja Cat, Drab Majesty ft Rachel Goswell, Fred Again & Brian Eno, Kenya Grace, Heartworms, The Hives, KEN Mode, Lichen Slow, O., Caroline Polachek, Рожь, Quiet Man, Ren, Olivia Rodrigo, Monika Roscher Bigband, Sleep Token, Sparks, Special Friend, Sunnsetter, Svalbard, & Yo La Tengo.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5Q6haXdmCbDR2quq13dX6N?si=e3c4280a88c642d0Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQ If you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdg Ian's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqA and Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9Nw The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Lydia ClarkeRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast Part of the We Made This podcast network. https://twitter.com/wmt_network You can also find all the We Dig Music & Free With This Months Issue episodes at www.wedigpodcasts.com

SynopsisOn today's date in 1949, the British composer Gerald Finzi conducted the premiere performance of his Clarinet Concerto at the Three Choirs Festival in Hereford.During his lifetime, Finzi never achieved the fame of some other 20th-century British composers. British tenor Mark Padmore wrote a recent appreciation titled “The Quiet Man of British Music,” which included these lines:“I want to make a case for taking the time to get to know a composer … whose plumage is discreet and whose song is quiet and subtle. Finzi might be termed one of classical music's wrens. Despite his exotic-sounding surname and mixed Italian, Sephardic and Ashkenazi heritage, Finzi was in many ways an archetypal English gentleman. ... One of his passions was the saving of old English varieties of apples. … [His] music was written slowly and often it would take many years for a piece to reach its final form.”Finzi died in 1956, at 55, from Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was concerned his music would be forgotten after his death and added this note to his catalogue of works: "The affection which an individual may retain after his departure is perhaps the only thing which guarantees an ultimate life to his work."Music Played in Today's ProgramGerald Finzi (1901 - 1956) – Clarinet Concerto (Alan Hacker; English String Orchestra; William Boughton, cond.) The Quiet Man, rien à voir avec le film, est une "expérience cinématographique" ayant pour principale particularité de mettre un scène un héros malentendant. Concept sous-exploité, acteurs en roue libre, game design bâclé, on vous dit tout sur The Quiet Man. Jaskier might not be a fan of the flamboyantly-mannered songsmith introduced in season three's fourth episode, but we sure are! Actually, there's quite a bit we're fond of in this one. From its shipside monster fight, to Fringilla living her best barfly life, to the line that made Radskier shippers squeal the world over, “The Invitation” is easily one of the season's standouts. But with Valdo making so much noise, why would we pair this one with a whiskey called The Quiet Man? Well, that would be for Geralt, a man of few words. But there's another, even more powerful reason for the pairing……which you'll discover if you stop reading this and just hit play already!

I'm a newbie, discovered your program this past summer." Shel O'Toole emailed: "Dear Marc, Thanks for sending out this song on ANZAC day. The words of the returned soldier M Edgerley would be powerful enough on their own but when presented by the wonderful voices of Jonny Dyer and Vicki Swan and their musical accompaniment they are deeply felt. I was moved to tears. I tend to avoid ANZAC Day as it seems to have become a promotion of war rather than a remembrance of the horrors and loss. This song took me back to when I was a child and the purpose of ANZAC day was to acknowledge the futility and ongoing impact of war. This Aussie thanks you. Regards" Brian McReynolds sent a picture: "So on my (local) travels, I wore my podcast shirt with my kilt while touring the B Reactor on the Hanford Nuclear Site in Washington State. It was well received by a tour guide and one of the people on the tour. Love your podcast and everything you do for the artists. ''

Bob and Brad wrap up their series on director John Ford with 1952's The Quiet Man. An objectively beautiful-looking film, it's also one of Ford's most gentle and good-hearted movies. John Wayne turns in perhaps his most sensitive performance, and our hosts praise Ford for coaxing such a turn form him. Also, this week Melissa recommends “The Music Man” (available on DirecTV), Ian recommends “Across the Universe” (available on Hoopla), and Adam recommends “Chicago” (available on Showtime).
