Question of the Week Question: From Ted Newill, Medical Device Success podcast I have been invited by a trade show organizer to conduct a podcast from the trade show floor. This is one of their tactics to liven up the show. I will probably do 2 or 3 podcast interviews in one day. You have been to trade shows so you know what the noise level can be. What kind of gear do you recommend I use to keep the background noise to a minimum. Headsets with microphones? Lavalier mics? Etc. Answer: A headset mic such as the Audio-Technica BPHS1 is a good option. Use that with a Mixer, portable recorder or interface that takes XLR. Any hand-held DYNAMIC mic should work. The background noise would add “ambiance” to the on location sound. Personally [Mike], I use a zoom H5 recorder with 2 hand-held dynamic mics and it's good enough. Programmatic form here Blubrry Pro Tip Respecting Listeners Time Question of the Week Question: Why are all the apps & directories so strict on podcast artwork? What are the rules? Answer: Apps need to have a consistent aspect ratio. Everyone picked square as it's the easiest. As far as the content of the image, no rules other than common sense. As for the technical rules…  The image must be PNG or JPG in RGB.  (lots of letters there) Apple wants between 1400 and 3000px SQUARE images.  All the other apps and directories will take an image in that size range.  BUT the other size thing is file size. Try to make it less than 500kb in size.  It will work a bit larger than that, but no need to have an image that is too big.  Most people are seeing it on their phone screen at 1x1 inch.  My images are all 1400x1400px.  That is good enough and gets the job done. Before they get to that, MacKenzie and this episodes co-host discuss subscribers. There is quite a bit of misunderstanding of how subscribers are calculated for podcasting, and this will give a better explanation and insight into these numbers – or lack there of. Jenna Spinelle, co-host of Democracy Works for the McCourtney Institute for Democracy at Penn State University, shared her experience getting a show off the ground rather quickly and expectations she has for podcasting in 2019. She has written two articles for Medium on the subject, they’re linked below. She will also be on a panel at Podcast Movement this summer, don’t miss it. Lastly, they talk about a new partner for Blubrry, Audioburst. Free transcriptions and audio bursts of your podcast. They help you take your content to the next level with easy ways to share sound bites of your show and add a transcription to your website. Learn more with the link in the show notes. Why Does Real Podcast Hosting Cost So Much More Than Soundcloud?

News: Messengers movie available for Pre-order at iTunes Soundcloud is dying.  Run for your lives!  (really, make other plans if you are on soundcloud). Audioboom makes deal with Deezer (or is it the other way around?) ------------- Q: Why is XXX (Blubrry, Libsyn, Spreaker) so much more expensive than Soundcloud? A: Because, businesses that host podcasts have to buy bandwidth.  Bandwidth costs money.  If you charge less than it costs you and don’t make a profit, the business won't stay in business.  This is why Free or cheap hosting will never be a long term plan.  If a company charges enough to make themselves a profit, they will stay in business.  Simple as that.  Soundcloud spent more money than they took in for a long time and it’s now catching up with them.  There have been 100’s of free or cheap hosting companies come and go over the years. Unless you enjoy changing hosts every so often, pick one that has been around for a while, not one that just started and seems too good to be true. Topics: Do you do too many podcasts?
 - I know I *try* to do too many. It normally doesn't work out. Do you have too complicated of a website?
 - I can't stress enough the importance of having a clean, easy website for your podcast. Too many times I go to someones "podcast" website and I can't find their podcast. Not only does it make it hard for listeners, but it makes it hard for the podcaster to maintain. Blubrry Tip : PowerPress Sites Deluxe

This episode of the PowerPress Podcast was a little different. Todd Cochrane, CEO of RawVoice and Blubrry, joined MacKenzie to talk about advertising on your podcast. It's been a topic that they've wanted to talk about for a while now and you get the inside scoop on how it works with Blubrry. News kind of took a hit this week on the podcast, but MacKenzie got in her podcast chronicle of the week as well. Leave us a review for PowerPress! The iTunes explicit / clean setting... As we mentioned before, the setting has changed. It applies to the entire program (also referred to as the RSS channel) as well as to the episodes (also referred to as RSS items). iTunes has rolled out an update to their podcast directory that now strictly displays, either a 'clean' or 'explicit' tag next to each podcast program listing, as well as next to each episode. The previous behavior allowed for a 3rd option, which was the ability to not specific clean or explicit. Most podcasters selected the 'no' option for the explicit which displayed nothing. The belief was that the 'clean' tag was intended for content that was safe for all ages and if you show wasn't intended for children, it didn't matter. Now it does. Please take a moment to review your PowerPress setting and make sure you have 'clean' or 'explicit' selected in your settings under iTunes.
