The Ship Report, Thursday, June 11, 2026Today we'll take a look at our glorious weather forecast with a caveat: the water in the ocean and our rivers is about as cold as cold tap water. Try it. Too cold for swimming really, but more to the point: just right for hypothermia and cold water shock.

Cold water oceans do not always get the same attention as coral reefs and tropical beaches, but they are full of incredible life, beauty, and ecological importance. In this episode of How to Protect the Ocean, Andrew Lewin speaks with Kirsti Burnett about why cold and temperate marine ecosystems deserve more love, curiosity, and protection. From Nova Scotia's eelgrass beds and coastal inlets to blue sharks, mola mola, leatherback sea turtles, North Atlantic right whales, and cold water kelp forests, this conversation celebrates the ocean environments that many people overlook. The episode also explores why local knowledge, science communication, and personal connection are essential for helping people care about the ocean close to home. Join Kirsti and I (and the Pisces Oceans Team at 1440 Bedford Highway, Bedford, Nova Scotia, on June 7th, 2026, from 9am-11am to talk all things oceans. In this episode of She Who Dares Wins, Michelle sits down with Sara, an author and cold water swim guide who has rebuilt her life through divorce, grief, major surgeries, and a near-death experience on the operating table. From being told she'd never “make it” as a freelancer, to years of rejection before finally landing a book deal, Sara shares how cold water, community, and storytelling helped her find courage, connection, and a new chapter in her 60s.This one is for anyone who feels “too ordinary,” too late, or scared to put their work out into the world.Key Takeaways Life is short – act now, not “one day”Facing heart surgery, failed operations, and grief taught Sara to stop postponing the things that matter.Cold water as medicineA 10-degree lake became her way back to the outdoors, easing pain, rebuilding confidence, and reconnecting with her body and mind.Community over competitionThe cold-water swimming world gave her supportive connection she never found in more competitive sports.Social media is a tool, not the measure of your worthInstagram can be frustrating, but breaks, boundaries, and real-life connections matter more than algorithms.Rejection doesn't mean your story doesn't matterYears of “no” eventually led to a book deal – and readers now message her to say her stories helped them be braver.Dreams feel different when they come truePublishing a book was a lifelong dream, but the reality came without fanfare – just the question: “What now?”Boundaries change everythingLearning to say no, choose better people, and set limits helped her finally find the right kind of support.Dare: stop hiding your workIf you want to write, submit something – a pitch, a manuscript, a competition entry. Ocean sunfish are one of the strangest fish on Earth. They can look like a giant floating dinner plate, drift sideways at the surface, and appear almost lifeless, but their strange behaviour is part of an incredible survival strategy. In this episode of How to Protect the Ocean, Andrew Lewin explores why the mola mola, also known as the ocean sunfish, spends time in cold Canadian waters. These waters may not look tropical or crystal clear, but they are packed with plankton, jellyfish, nutrients, and life. That productivity attracts whales, turtles, seabirds, sharks, and even one of the heaviest bony fish on the planet. This episode is a reminder that cold water oceans are not boring. They are full of surprises, strange animals, and signs of healthy food webs hiding in plain sight.

You should be drinking hot water. You should be drinking cool water. You shouldn't be drinking this water, why are you drinking that water? So much confusion and overthinking on the most seemingly simple part of nutrition…Hydration!More specifically, there has been this recent push for drinking of hot water (or warm water really), in the mornings to help aid in some health benefits. But how true is this? Is it really better than cold water drinking? In this episode, I explain the basics around what the science really says (or doesn't say) about the question of hot water vs cold water for health, digestion, and results. What if the thing that saved your mental health wasn't a pill, a program, or a therapist — but a stranger in a gym telling you that you looked terrible and needed a cold shower? Get 12% off an Ice Barrel or Chiller with code DRMOTLEY at https://shorturl.at/3Ejhb. That's the real origin story of Ice Barrel. Wyatt Ewing didn't build Ice Barrel for athletes. He built it because cold therapy stopped his anxiety and depression when nothing else could. In this episode, Dr. Motley and the founder of Ice Barrel go deep on the nervous system science of cold exposure, the vagus nerve, contrast therapy, and why just 2 minutes in cold water can reset your entire stress response. Plus: Wyatt's vision quest story post-acquisition that nobody's heard. 00:00 - Introduction 03:20 - Wyatt's Story 04:14 - The Stranger who Changed Everything 05:07 - Cold Shower to Ice Barrel 06:19 - Going Broke to Build Something Real 09:08 - Why Cold Therapy is Unlike Anything Else 17:03 - Wyatt's Personal Protocol 18:16 - Modern Comfort, Ancient Struggle 23:00 - What Cold Does to a Nervous System Under Pressure 32:02 - Mammalian Dive Reflex and the Vagus Nerve 34:50 - Contrast Therapy is the Future 42:06 - Cold Has Been Following Me My Whole Life 49:05 - Youth Athletics and the Recovery Gap 51:14 - Where You Can Find Wyatt Key Takeaways Cold therapy works in 2 minutes. Unlike exercise, meditation, or supplementation, cold immersion produces immediate, measurable changes in mood, energy, and stress hormones. Wyatt's benchmark: 'I've never seen anybody get out of an ice bath without a smirk on their face' — and he's offered $1,000 to prove him wrong. The upright posture isn't cosmetic — it's neurological. Lying in a bathtub during cold exposure sends conflicting signals: the body enters fight-or-flight but is told to rest. Ice Barrel's upright design mirrors how the human body actually responds to cold stress in nature, producing a more complete physiological response. You're not training for cold — you're retraining your nervous system. Wyatt noticed that after months of cold therapy, his palms stopped sweating during high-stakes corporate negotiations and his resting heart rate during stress dropped. The cold isn't the point; the recalibrated default stress response is. Start with the hose. Tap water from a garden hose runs at 55-60°F — cold enough to activate all the primary benefits. Beginners don't need ice. Start there, work toward 50-55°F, and only go into the 40s when you're confident. Shivering is the body's signal to get out. The future of cold therapy is contrast. Hot/cold alternation — sauna then cold plunge, repeated — produces norepinephrine and euphoric endorphin release that standalone cold or heat cannot. Ice Barrel's partnership with Sunlighten (infrared sauna) positions it at the center of this shift. Comfort is the enemy, and hot water is new. Even the wealthiest person 1,000 years ago struggled to get hot water. The modern convenience of hot-on-demand is an evolutionary novelty, and Wyatt cites research showing that people who believe stress is good for them live substantially longer than those who don't. ------ Want more of The Ancient Health Podcast? Dean Hall was sick, grieving, and without hope — until he made a decision that changed everything: find something worth living for. In this powerful encore release from the Biological Blueprint, Dean joins Freddie to explore the terrain that no lab test can measure — purpose, spirit, and the courage to take just one more step. Drawing on Viktor Frankl's observations from Auschwitz, Dean reveals why it wasn't the strongest or the smartest who survived the unsurvivable — it was those most passionately tied to a purpose larger than themselves. He walks through his three pillars for navigating a dark night of the soul: releasing the need for perfection, trusting the body's innate ability to heal what it created, and the radical simplicity of asking yourself only one question — what is the next step? Whether you're 180 miles into an open water swim or sitting with a diagnosis that just changed your life, Dean's answer is always the same: you already know. The second half of this conversation goes into territory rarely explored in health and wellness — transgenerational trauma, family systems therapy, and the epigenetic wounds passed silently from generation to generation. Dean shares how he's only recently begun mapping his own ancestral lineage, from a 14-year-old great grandmother who crossed the ocean alone from Sweden to fishermen and brawlers from Northern England — and how forest bathing and cold water immersion have become his most powerful tools for releasing what isn't his to carry. He also shares a profoundly simple breathwork and prayer practice he has used with thousands of clients over 20 years — a tool he calls centering down — that uses the brain's hardwired need to answer every question it's asked to surface your deepest purpose. One hundred percent of people who stick with it through the frustration, he says, find their answer. This one is worth a second listen. Questions? Comments? We love feedback! Email us at info@baishavaad.org Rav Aryeh FinkelQuestion: I built an extension on my house and made a new laundry room. My wife put the first load of laundry into the new washing machine and set the machine on the cold cycle. When she opened it at the end of the cycle, she realized that the plumber had mixed up the hot and cold water pipes, which had caused hot water to come out of the pipe that should have been cold water. This ruined all of the clothing in the wash. Is the plumber liable for this damage?Answer: First of all, the plumber should not get paid for the job.Regarding whether or not he should be liable to pay for the ruined clothing, we would have to find a category of mazik to place him under. The Rishonim say that garmi only applies if the damage occurs at the time of the damager's actions. In this case, the plumber made his mistake well before the woman did the laundry; therefore, he cannot be held liable because of garmi. He also is definitely not odom hamazik as he did not do the damage directly. What he did could perhaps be classified as bor because when he mixed up the pipes he is akin to someone who dug a pit that can cause damage; however, bor is potur on keilim, so the plumber could not be held liable for damages to clothing because of bor.The most likely chiyuv would be aish. If someone places an object in a place where it is likely to be moved by an outside force and cause damage, he can be held liable for aish. The problem is that one is only liable for aish if the object he placed is the thing that ends up causing the damage. In this instance, the damage was actually done by the water. The plumber did not put the water into the machine. He merely installed the pipes in a way that caused the water to be diverted the wrong way. Thus, there doesn't seem to be a way to hold him accountable.I would add that when we said that the plumber cannot be held liable with the rule of garmi, this was presuming that he was not a professional. If the homeowner had hired a professional plumber, perhaps the man could be held liable. The Gemara says that if a professional gives bad advice which leads to a loss of money, that professional can be held liable through the rule of garmi. This would mean that if a professional plumber said that the pipes were hooked up correctly when they really were not, he could be held liable for garmi.

Mo Egger from ESPN Radio in Cincinnati joined the show. Mo saw every snap from Brendan Sorsby last season covering the Cincinnati Bearcats. Sorsby is likely going to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft after he was busted for gambling last month when he was part of the Indiana Hoosiers roster. Mo said he's been wondering if he's missing something about Sorsby, since everyone is labeling him early as a future NFL star. Mo said the performances were so uneven and up & down from Sorsby in 2025 that he finds it hard to believe that he will be a future Top 10 caliber player. Mo broke down some of the shaky games from Sorsby last season while adding that he doesn't expect the QB to play in college ever again. Mo said he truly doesn't understand what everyone is falling in love with when they watch Sorsby play. The guys asked Mo about the tricky situation Sorsby is in after allegedly wagering on college football as a college football player, which is a big no-no.

Open water is, for many people, their greatest fear, and being trapped within it must be terrifying - especially if you cannot swim to safety, to face your final, mortal moments like that. On a freezing cold March morning back in 2013, in the town of Arklow, in County Wexford, in Ireland, a 31 year old Hungarian national named Csaba Orsos faced exactly his greatest fear. It was the last thing he was ever to face. Marcus and I have been trading messages for awhile to connect over the podcast, but it is hard to do when he is either always behind an excavator, handlebars, or just on a trail in general. That is why we brought the podcast to his excavator literally. Marcus is the recreational trail director for Anniston, Alabama, but most just know him as "The Trail Guru". The dude has been around the MTB scene a long while and a staple in the Alabama/Southeast riding community. We learn about his personal life history in bikes, discuss old school bikes, e-bikes, riding styles, trails, and how he got so involved in the scene over time. Hope you enjoy! https://www.instagram.com/trailguru1/ https://www.instagram.com/n.e.a.b.a/ https://www.instagram.com/helloanniston/https://www.facebook.com/marcus.g.tillman https://www.strava.com/athletes/979301?oq=marcus
Cold water immersion is put to the test for burns, priapism, gout, and muscle aches.
Dan Severn is a pioneering figure in combat sports, known for his dominance in both mixed martial arts and professional wrestling. Since his high school days in Coldwater, Michigan, Severn built his athletic foundation as an accomplished amateur wrestler, earning All-American honors at Arizona State University. He rose to prominence in the early days of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, where his grappling-heavy style and physical strength earned him the nickname, "The Beast." Severn became a two-time UFC tournament champion and later captured the UFC Superfight Championship, helping lay the foundations for the sport during its formative years with his disciplined, wrestling-based approach. Beyond MMA, Severn achieved notable success in professional wrestling, becoming a rare athlete to bridge the gap between "the octagon" and "the squared circle". He held the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship for over four years, one of the longest reigns in the title's history, and also competed in WWE during the late 1990s. Known for maintaining his amateur wrestling persona, Severn brought a unique authenticity to pro wrestling, rarely straying from his real-life fighting style. With a career spanning decades and a legacy rooted in toughness, versatility, and credibility, Severn remains one of the most respected figures in combat sports history. From his home base in Arizona, Dan continues to help athletes of all ages and stays busy assisting others to reach their goals. To reach him regarding training or other ventures, he can be emailed at dan@dansevern.com.

Iron Radio: AI's Impact on Coaching & Peer Review, Urolithin A in Sports Nutrition, and Cold Water Immersion Updates On Iron Radio, hosts Dr. Lonnie Lowery and Dr. Mike T. Nelson discuss how AI may speed content distribution, assist with business tasks, and potentially replace some lower-level coaches while still lacking context for peer review and research interpretation, raising concerns about regulation, healthcare profit motives, and data-center resource demands. They revisit urolithin A (a gut microbiota–derived metabolite linked to mitochondrial effects), referencing a 2025 Frontiers in Nutrition paper and Mike's personal and client experiences, noting modest perceived recovery/HRV benefits, high cost, and possible responder differences due to gut conversion. Mike also summarizes a broad review on cold exposure and metabolism across organ systems, highlighting mixed recovery data, evidence that immediate post-hypertrophy cold-water immersion can reduce muscle protein synthesis via reduced blood flow, lack of clear anti-inflammatory marker changes, and practical guidance based on season, logistics, and athlete preference. 00:00 Welcome to Iron Radio 01:13 Mike's Vegas Mastermind 01:30 AI for Content Creation 03:18 AI Limits and Assumptions 03:57 Peer Review and Academia 05:42 Jobs at Risk in Healthcare 10:23 AI in Coaching and Diets 13:10 Regulation and Data Centers 15:24 AGI Race and Safety 17:36 Urolithin A Research Overview 20:49 Mike's Experience with UA 22:33 Gut Conversion Variability 22:58 Iron Radio Feed Update 24:10 Free Daily Newsletter 24:48 New Supplements Book 25:57 Postbiotics and Skepticism 28:04 Safety First Testing 29:00 Cold Exposure Review 31:06 Hypertrophy Tradeoffs 35:31 In Season Ice Baths 40:03 Measuring Recovery Reality 43:15 Whole Body Effects 45:51 Wrap Up and Disclaimer Donate to the show via PayPal HERE.You can also join Dr Mike's Insider Newsletter for more info on how to add muscle, improve your performance and body comp - all without destroying your health, go to www.ironradiodrmike.com Thank you!Phil, Jerrell, Mike T, and Lonnie
Reiss throws cold water on the Pats' offseason
Andrew Lincoln starred in a TV series, and so of course we're gonna talk about it! Thing is, he plays kind of a berk (that's British for chode). Coldwater (available on Paramount+ in the U.S.) is a lot of fun though — it's funny, thought-provoking, and it's a good old-fashioned thriller to sink your teeth into. I wouldn't necessarily give it my highest recommendation, but honestly, that fact that Lucy and I had so much fun talking about it made me like it even more. You gotta be ready to see Andrew Lincoln playing a berk though…. Let's talk about little green men, Trump, Obama, and cold water....
That's a wrap for season 5! Because of the Daryl show and a few other detours, it took us six months, which was just as long as when we covered it the first time. Lol. Anyway, the season ends with this packed episode that's a turning point for Alexandria and Rick and the fam, and we were thrilled to have listener Carisa from Portland to talk It out with us. Be sure to listen to the end for some book recommendations.
