Ispirato alla storia vera di Garifalià Michalvei, la cui vicenda destò profonda commozione nell'America del tempo, il romanzo si fonda su una scrupolosa documentazione storica, inquadrata nelle strutture mitico- archetipiche della tradizione popolare greca e della cultura afroamericana– molto diverse fra loro, ma unite dalla sofferenza, dalla sopraffazione e dal desiderio di libertà. “Fra tutti quei corpi prostrati, solo una ragazza aveva lo sguardo sollevato verso una direzione indefinita. Una ragazza incredibilmente gracile, con lunghi capelli corvini e profonde striature sulle braccia. Appena le passai davanti, avvertii i suoi occhi fissarsi su di me. Questa era forse l'immagine più dolorosa che avessi mai visto in vita mia.”Anna Griva è nata nel 1985 ad Atene. Autrice di narrativa e saggistica, collabora con le pagine culturali dei maggiori quotidiani greci. Ha studiato tra Atene e Roma, dove si è laureata in Letteratura italiana con una tesi sulla poesia del Rinascimento. Nel 2020 l'Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Atene le ha attribuito il premio per la Traduzione per aver tradotto in greco la poetessa del Cinquecento Laura Battiferri. Nel 2024 ha ottenuto il prestigioso premio nazionale di Poesia (assegnato dal ministero greco della Cultura) per la raccolta La dea perduta. Insegna Letteratura italiana alla Hellenic Open University di Atene e Scrittura creativa presso l'Università Capodistria di Atene.La schiava greca è il suo secondo romanzo.Massimo Cazzulo è uno studioso e traduttore italiano specializzato in letteratura e poesia greca, sia antica sia moderna. Il suo lavoro si concentra in particolare sulla traduzione e diffusione della poesia neogreca contemporanea in Italia: ha curato e tradotto, tra gli altri, "Postscriptum della storia" di Spyros Vrettós (Ladolfi Editore, 2005) e "Nostalgia del presente" di Antonis Fostieris (Crocetti Editore, 2021).
