The Carolina Hurricanes win their first Stanley Cup in 20 years, while the New York Knicks end a 53-year drought to become NBA champions — with celebrations spilling into arrests and fires — as World Cup action continues with Canada earning a historic point and Lionel Messi delivering a hat trick, plus Maurie catching up with Ed Robertson and Ghana star Fatawu Issahaku. Ron MacLean is forced to apologize for an on-air joke during the Final, 12 children are hospitalized after an incident at Cultus Lake Waterpark, and in entertainment news, Seth Rogen distances himself from James Franco, Sabrina Carpenter is granted a restraining order, Shania Twain joins Harry Styles on tour, and Maurie sits down with Scott Speedman and Robbie G.K.

Send us Fan MailPlease welcome a veteran sports reporter and host who, in my opinion, has been better on his feet and in the moment than anybody else in a rink or on a field. I'm talking of course about Scott Oake, who recently announced his retirement from Sportsnet and Hockey Night in Canada. Correction – he reluctantly announced, because he never wanted any fuss made about his departure. He just wanted to go quietly, to ghost. Sportsnet insisted a fuss be made and so he has squirmed through several interviews, including this one with me. I just wanted to thank him for all the great TV moments and, as someone else who has milked this talking to famous people thing for decades, ask how I can find a dignified way to the exit ramp. Scott offers good advice, talks about that interview in the stands with Snoop Dogg, and names the colleagues who influenced him the most. He also puts the spotlight on what is most important to him now, the Bruce and Anne Oake Memorial Foundation established in his son and late wife's name in Winnipeg. It is a wonderful cause, one born out of sorrow but what a pivot towards helping others. Helmet on and get ready to lace ‘em up with Scott Oake.
Inside the Village - A weekly podcast featuring newsmakers in Ontario
Even at 92 years old, Don Cherry is never far from the headlines.Back in February, the longtime co-host of “Coach's Corner” was appointed to the Order of Ontario. A month later, a Conservative MP started a push to honour Cherry with the Order of Canada — a movement that continues to gain steam. And now there's a new book out, authored by Cherry's late daughter, Cindy, who passed away unexpectedly in 2024. The book — The Don Cherry Story: Part II — is the second instalment of a two-book series that she began writing before she passed away.Joining us on this week's episode of Village Media's Closer Look podcast is Tim Cherry, Cindy's little brother and Don's son.Our conversation covers a lot of ice, including Don Cherry's infamous “you people” poppy rant, his controversial firing after nearly four decades on the air, and why Grapes didn't simply apologize for a comment that stung a lot of people, including many who served in the Canadian Forces.Tim also fills us in on his dad's health, if their popular podcast is ever coming back, and why — unlike so many people — he doesn't blame Ron MacLean for everything that happened.Love or hate Don Cherry, this episode is a must-watch.Reach out to Frisco and Scott

Today, we're looking at Ron MacLean's latest betrayal of Canadian icon and former Coach's Corner cohost, Don Cherry. MacLean, still with CBC, asserted that Cherry's controversial “you people” rant was an exit strategy for the longtime hockey broadcaster — leading Cherry to refute the claim in an interview with the Toronto Sun's Joe Warmington. Plus, late last week Mark Carney's lengthy list of conflicts of interest was unveiled, with the prime minister having to recuse himself in business connected to over 100 companies. And finally, a new report is shining light on the Liberals' concerns that law-abiding firearms owners will not respect the government's efforts at gun grabbing.
