A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the musical group Gong (as well as some other general stuff) in (just over) twenty five minutes. The band were formed in Paris in 1967 by Australian musician Daevid Allen and English vocalist Gilli Smyth. Band members have included Didier Malherbe, Pip Pyle, Steve Hillage, Mike Howlett, Tim Blake, Pierre Moerlen, Bill Laswell and Theo Travis. Others who have played on stage with Gong include Don Cherry, Chris Cutler, Bill Bruford, Brian Davison, Dave Stewart and Tatsuya Yoshida.Gong's 1970 debut album, Magick Brother, featured a psychedelic rock sound. By the following year, the second album, Camembert Electrique, featured the more psychedelic rock/space rock sound with which they would be most associated.Gong's influence has been seen in artists such as Ozric Tentacles and Insane Clown Posse. Throwback Thursday to episode #139 where I got to speak with Don Cherry. Don Cherry is a Canadian hockey personality. A former minor league defenseman and coach, he played one NHL game with the Boston Bruins in 1955. Cherry coached the Bruins from 1974 to 1979, leading them to four straight division titles and two Stanley Cup Finals, earning the NHL Coach of the Year award in 1976. He gained fame as a broadcaster on Hockey Night in Canada from 1980 to 2019, co-hosting "Coach's Corner" with Ron MacLean, known for his outspoken, colorful commentary on hockey, support for tough play, and patriotic views. Don Cherry's Coach's Corner segment on Hockey Night in Canada ended abruptly in 2019. Was it ever going to happen any other way? Controversial and entertaining, Cherry spoke his mind to the country for 37 years in the aforementioned first intermission segment. On Nov. 9, 2019, going over the top met with the times at hand and the contemporary media landscape.  Cherry was fired by Sportsnet in what is known as “Poppygate”. Is there more to this story? Is there more to Grapes than most care to know? His late daughter decided she wanted to confront this matter and also the descriptions she so often heard and read about her dad. The result is The Don Cherry Story, by his Daughter, Cindy Cherry. It's a book that exists in two parts, the first deals with the front facing persona of her father, and the second which focuses on his life, on and off the ice. This episode is a conversation with Cindy's brother and Don's son, Tim Cherry, about the book and about his family. *Cindy Cherry passed away in July 2024. **This was recorded one week prior to Cherry's sign off from "The Don Cherry's Grapevine Podcast" on Sunday, June 22.

This Monday's (2/17) Deep Focus is on trumpeter Don Cherry, a wonderful and deeply missed friend of WKCR.  Back in the Eighties, Don was a frequent guest on Mitch Goldman's show.  Don would guest DJ, talk to the audience, bring guests... It was an ongoing Eighties NYC Don Cherry party.  And if there was a blank cassette handy, Mitch would make a recording.  The tapes got tossed in a box and ended up deep in storage.    In January of 2024, Mitch and his guest, the bandleader, trumpeter, cultural historian, and raconteur Steven Bernstein blew the dust off of a few of the tapes and took their audience on a time travel journey beyond the imagination of Asimov or Butler.  Cherry as a radio host was knowing, passionate, deeply curious, and remarkably generous.
