This Monday's (2/17) Deep Focus is on trumpeter Don Cherry, a wonderful and deeply missed friend of WKCR.  Back in the Eighties, Don was a frequent guest on Mitch Goldman's show.  Don would guest DJ, talk to the audience, bring guests... It was an ongoing Eighties NYC Don Cherry party.  And if there was a blank cassette handy, Mitch would make a recording.  The tapes got tossed in a box and ended up deep in storage.    In January of 2024, Mitch and his guest, the bandleader, trumpeter, cultural historian, and raconteur Steven Bernstein blew the dust off of a few of the tapes and took their audience on a time travel journey beyond the imagination of Asimov or Butler.  Cherry as a radio host was knowing, passionate, deeply curious, and remarkably generous. For the final episode of 2024 we're joined by the formidable Pat Kane, who answers our questions about his dual career as a musician and writer with what co-host Martin Colyer describes as "an almost frightening eloquence". Commencing with the formative memories of his late father singing Frank Sinatra songs to him at bedtime — and his lifelong fixation with Ol' Blue Eyes — Pat talks about Hue and Cry, the R&B-infused pop group he formed with his brother Greg in 1983. Reflections on the success of singles such as 1987's 'Labour of Love' prompt a general discussion of '80s "Brit Soul", with significant input from fellow practitioners Mark Pringle and Martin Colyer. The two linchpins of Hot House recall the 1987 sessions they recorded in the Southern-soul oasis of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. After bringing the Hue and Cry story up to the present day, Jasper introduces clips from Daryl Easlea's 2001 audio interview with Chic's Nile Rodgers. As a tribute to the group's Alfa Anderson, who died two days before this episode was recorded, Daryl's splendid interview provides the perfect excuse to express our love for disco's greatest self-contained band. Finally, we ask our guest about his exceptional writing as a cultural and political journalist, focusing in particular on his brilliant pieces about Brian Eno (1995) and Michael Jackson (2009). Celle de Rudi Flores et son art virtuose, irrémédiablement teintée de chamamé, le folklore de la région de Corrientes, fait d'elle l'alliée de luxe. Walter Laborde dit « El Chino », chanteur soliste, acteur, chanteur d'orchestre, ancien footballeur, « activiste » au sens politique du genre à l'image d'un Pugliese en son temps, est l'artisan emblématique du renouveau du tango chanté, conté au XXIe siècle. Le Tablao de Tango, c'est son histoire et son ADN, celle d'un tanguero pure souche. Franco Luciani, l'harmoniciste multi-primé, improvisateur hors pair, à la culture jazz, aussi à l'aise chez Piazzolla, que pour un hommage à Toots Thielemans, aussi inventif dans le folklore que dans la réinvention des tangos classiques. Avec son instrument-valise, qu'il transforme à sa guise en bandonéon ou en grand orchestre, il n'y a pas d'autres pareils pour incarner le tango, comme un blues. S'égrenant au rythme de la descente d'une bonne bouteille de vin, le Tablao de Tango incarne le tango au plus essentiel, c'est-à-dire métissé, syncrétique, « criollo », sans partitions, avec la base la plus simple, celle du dialogue du poète avec la guitare et la joie viscérale du partage. Ces chants « d'alcool et de désamour » mettent en scène un blues portuaire, sans fioritures, un chant issu des bas-fonds, tel le fado ou le rébétiko. Ce spectacle au dispositif simple – trois personnages autour d'une table et une bouteille de vin – est issu de la création Club de Tango, pour la Philharmonie de Paris. Il a réalisé quelque 36 concerts en 2023 en Europe et voyage sous forme de concert ou de concert-Milonga. If you were a teenager in the late 80s you only have to hear the name Neneh Cherry to conjure the image of Neneh, seven months pregnant, on the Top of the Pops stage performing her hit Buffalo Stance. She was the epitome of cool. She made teenage girls everywhere believe that anything was possible. Now, almost 40 years later, the award-winning singer, songwriter, rapper, producer, mother of three, stepmother of one, grandmother of four, has lived - and continues to live - the most incredible life. She has released six critically acclaimed albums, won two Brits and been nominated for a Grammy.  And now she has written a memoir that takes us from her peripatetic childhood moving between Sweden and New York with her mother Swedish artist Moki Karlsson and her step-dad jazz trumpeter Don Cherry to the present day. It quite honestly blew me away. A Thousand Threads takes those strands and weaves them into a story of creativity and collaboration, love and loss, motherhood and daughterhood, and above all what it means to be a woman. Neneh and I got on zoom to talk about home, family, losing her mother Moki at just 66 and losing herself to grief and menopause, finding pleasure in the little things, being a gran, staying creative forever and so so much more.
