Pianist, organist, composer, and bandleader Carla Bley (born May 11, 1936) considered herself primarily a composer, saying she was 99% composer and 1% pianist. She associated herself with the avant guard movement, allying herself with musicians like Charlie Haden, Michael Mantler, and others in her cutting edge ensembles, she organized the Jazz Composers Guild in the 1960s featuring many of the most innovative musicians in NYC at the time, and her record label released recordings of Don Cherry, Roswell Rudd and Clifford Thornton.
The mere mention of the name Don Cherry is sure to conjure an image in your mind. While that image may be different from one person to the next, there's no disputing Cherry's stature and status in the game of hockey. Before she passed, Don's daughter, Cindy, wrote a book about her dad. There was so much material, though, that it had to be released in two parts. The second part has just been released (you can buy The Don Cherry Story Part II here). Cindy's brother (and Don's son) Tim joins us this week on the show to talk about family life with a famous dad, scouting for the Ontario Hockey League and, of course, "Poppygate." Would Don Cherry still get cancelled today for his "milk and honey" rant? Enjoy the conversation, as we hope you're enjoying the Memorial Cup! The OHL Podcast is supported by Draft Kings Sportsbook. In this episode of MFM Speaks Out, host Sohrab Saadat Ladjevardi (aka SoSaLa) speaks with internationally acclaimed trumpeter, composer, filmmaker, and educator Volker Goetze about his lifelong journey through jazz, West African griot traditions, flamenco, and socially conscious artmaking. Volker reflects on discovering jazz in Cologne through artists like Miles Davis, Sun Ra, and Don Cherry, and how music became a spiritual and emotional refuge after the loss of his father at a young age. The conversation explores his deep connection to Senegalese and Mandé music, the cultural significance of the griot tradition, and his long-running collaborations with kora masters Ablaye Cissoko and Ali Boulo Santo Cissoko. The episode also dives into the creation of Volker's current project, Flamencora — a boundary-pushing trio blending flamenco guitar, kora, and trumpet jazz improvisation. Volker discusses the rhythmic and cultural complexities of flamenco, the influence of maqam and African polyrhythms on his trumpet playing, and the challenge of building authentic cross-cultural collaborations. Upcoming Performances May 28, 2026: FlamenKora at The Drome, NYC (same venue as duo's NYC premiere with Ablaye Cissokho) 4 May 30, 2026: FlamenKora at Tempo Arts Performance Base, Kingston (renovated church with adjustable reverb for electronic music/sound installations) 4 May 2026: 20-minute performance at Emily Harvey Foundation with Johanna Roa's poem for Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (17th-century Mexican nun-intellectual); features flamenco singer Christian performing traditional siguiriya melody with Roa's text Beyond music, Volker shares insights into his documentary filmmaking, including his acclaimed film Griot and socially engaged projects focused on homelessness and displacement. The conversation closes with a candid discussion about the realities of surviving as an independent musician in New York, the changing economics of the music industry, streaming, grants, cultural funding, AI, copyright concerns, and the importance of artistic community through organizations like Musicians for Musicians. Topics Discussed Volker Goetze's early introduction to jazz in Cologne The emotional and spiritual power of improvisation Discovering West African music and the griot tradition Opening for Youssou N'Dour in Senegal The role of the griot as historian, storyteller, and cultural guardian The deep musical connections between jazz and West African traditions Falling in love with flamenco and learning its rhythmic language The creation and evolution of Flamenkora Collaborating with kora masters Ablaye Cissoko and Ali Boulo Santo Cissoko Working with legendary percussionist Mino Cinelu The influence of maqam, Indian rhythmic systems, and polyrhythms Volker's documentary films Griot and Displaced Lessons from mentors, including Markus Stockhausen and Enrique Vargas The realities of sustaining an international music career Music grants, touring economics, and the collapse of CD revenue AI, copyright, and the future of musicians' rights The importance of artistic community and Musicians for Musicians Upcoming performances in New York Artists & Influences Mentioned Miles Davis Billie Holiday Don Cherry Sun Ra Paco de Lucía Toumani Diabaté Ali Farka Touré Salif Keita Randy Weston Arturo O'Farrill Joe Lovano Subjects Covered Jazz improvisation Flamenco rhythm and harmony Kora traditions African diaspora and musical lineage Cultural exchange in music Documentary filmmaking Music activism Artist sustainability Grants and independent funding AI and copyright concerns Community building among musicians Featured Music Bétiyata Sadier Toumaranke CreditsProducer and host: Sohrab Saadat Ladjevardi aka SoSaLaPublisher: Musicians For Musicians (MFM), Inc.Technical support: Adam Reifsteck (MFM Board)https://musiciansformusicians.org
Throw away the map. Now, how are you going to find your way to your destination? You will probably find many more answers than you may have thought you'd find when you were looking at that folded-up piece of paper. The band Old and New Dreams didn't have to follow chord changes, disregarded time signatures, but their music was full of story-songs, each with a beginning, a middle, and an end. It's four members-- saxophonist Dewey Redman, trumpeter Don Cherry, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Ed Blackwell-- each sang his song in full voice. And when you heard them together, you never wondered if or when you would arrive. You just hoped the journey wouldn't end too soon, even if you knew that it would. Sonic navigator/drummer William Hooker has chosen Old and New Dreams for this week's episode of Mitch Goldman's Deep Focus, and Ahmed Abdullah as his surprise guest. Will Mitch find live, unreleased recordings of the band in the WKCR archives? The day will come when his spotless record is going to get besmirched. Oh, let's just hope it's not this week! Inside the Village - A weekly podcast featuring newsmakers in Ontario
Even at 92 years old, Don Cherry is never far from the headlines.Back in February, the longtime co-host of “Coach's Corner” was appointed to the Order of Ontario. A month later, a Conservative MP started a push to honour Cherry with the Order of Canada — a movement that continues to gain steam. And now there's a new book out, authored by Cherry's late daughter, Cindy, who passed away unexpectedly in 2024. The book — The Don Cherry Story: Part II — is the second instalment of a two-book series that she began writing before she passed away.Joining us on this week's episode of Village Media's Closer Look podcast is Tim Cherry, Cindy's little brother and Don's son.Our conversation covers a lot of ice, including Don Cherry's infamous “you people” poppy rant, his controversial firing after nearly four decades on the air, and why Grapes didn't simply apologize for a comment that stung a lot of people, including many who served in the Canadian Forces.Tim also fills us in on his dad's health, if their popular podcast is ever coming back, and why — unlike so many people — he doesn't blame Ron MacLean for everything that happened.Love or hate Don Cherry, this episode is a must-watch.Reach out to Frisco and Scott

Show NotesSaxophonist, composer, and educator TK Blue joins host Steve Roby to celebrate one of jazz's great live traditions — the music and legacy of NEA Jazz Master Dr. Randy Weston, recorded on what would have been Weston's 100th birthday: April 6th, 2025.TK Blue was Weston's longtime musical director and arranger, performing with him for nearly 40 years alongside legends like Don Cherry, Miriam Makeba, Archie Shepp, and Pharaoh Sanders. In this conversation, TK shares his musical roots growing up in Long Island with Caribbean parents, studying jazz in New York City with Jimmy Heath, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and others through programs like Jazzmobile. He also talks about how a chance encounter at an anti-apartheid fundraiser in Brooklyn — with only a piccolo in his pocket — launched his decades-long journey with Randy Weston. We explore the deep philosophy behind Weston's music: the African rhythmic diaspora, the African civilizations that predate slavery, and the concept of music as a sacred art that unites people of all backgrounds. TK also shares an unforgettable story about opening a hotel door for a mystery photographer in Paris — who turned out to be Henri Cartier-Bresson — and the peaceful, dignified way Randy Weston made his transition in September 2018. Songs Featured in This Episode:“The Wise One Speaks” — TK Blue, from the album The Rhythms Continue“Kasbah 330A” — TK Blue, from the album The Rhythms ContinueMusic provided by TK Blue and used with his permission.

Few figures in Canadian broadcasting spark debate like Don Cherry. Now, a push to see the former Coach's Corner star appointed to the Order of Canada—championed by voices in the Conservative Party of Canada, including MP Andrew Lawton and backed by Alberta premier Danielle Smith—is reigniting old arguments about one of the country's most polarizing personalities. Cherry is celebrated by supporters as a hockey icon and outspoken patriot, but critics point to years of controversial comments about immigrants, Indigenous people, and women in sports media—controversies that ultimately ended his run on Hockey Night in Canada. The proposal is already drawing criticism, including from Conservatives in Quebec, setting up a national debate: should a cultural lightning rod like Cherry receive one of Canada's highest honours? Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959) may be the most controversial album in jazz history, and one of the most important. In 1959, a broke musician from Fort Worth, Texas arrived in New York City with a plastic saxophone and a band that didn't play by the rules. And EVERYONE had an opinion about it.Jazz legends hated it. Miles Davis said Ornette was "all screwed up inside." Max Roach punched him in the mouth. Dizzy Gillespie said Ornette's music wasn't even jazz. Meanwhile, Leonard Berstein and John Coltrane celebrated him.So what exactly is The Shape of Jazz to Come, and why was it so radical? Jazz pianists Peter Martin and Adam Maness break down every track, from "Lonely Woman" to "Chronology". They dig into harmolodics, free jazz, and how Ornette shaped everyone from Miles Davis (who eventually came around) to the '80s burnout crew, including Wynton Marsalis, who personally recommended this record to Peter.Dig into The Shape of Jazz to Come with us, and learn why this soft spoken saxophonist inspired both criticism and awe.-------------------------------Start your free Open Studio trial for ALLLLL your jazz lesson needs:https://openstudiojazz.com/yhi-------------------------------Related You'll Hear It episodes:Mingus Ah Um: https://youtu.be/XYeRZ0Awui4Giant Steps: https://youtu.be/8umC2yZlPHcKind of Blue: https://youtu.be/ShzSnjP8bSgTime Out: https://youtu.be/-_qPhFSJeQUNina Simone at Town Hall: https://youtu.be/2PDjN5_2y5Q-------------------------------About You'll Hear It:In this popular music series Adam and Peter break down the greatest albums of all time. Blue Lake is the music of American artist Jason Dungan, shaped by living on a Copenhagen island where wild parkland sits on reclaimed industrial ground and flight paths cross the sky. We sit down to explore how place, practice, and people turn Americana and ambient textures into something fused with a European sensibility. Jason shares the pivot from visual art to sound, and why Don Cherry's spirit sits at the project's core—not as a template but as a way of working that welcomes risk, collaboration, and porous borders. We unpack how chords feel different when five musicians make them together, how a rock club can unlock a set the concert hall couldn't, and why the best parts of a record often come from the problems you refuse to outsource. Along the way, we talk recording in Sweden's forests beside factories, treating albums like thoughtfully built exhibitions, and keeping the human pulse in music even as tools get slicker. We also zoom out. Touring with a band in the UK, leaning on Scandinavian funding, and balancing freelance work all reveal the new economics artists navigate. Jason calls out AI's promise to “solve” creative labour as missing the point—the friction is the point. And when politics intrudes, it's real: living in Denmark means Greenland is neighbours, language, history, protest. Small-country confidence, built on community and cooperation, mirrors the values in Blue Lake's sound. If you enjoy Lost and Sound and want to help keep it thriving, the best way to support is simple: subscribe, leave a rating, and write a quick review on your favourite podcast platform. In this Remembrance Day special, Matthew takes a candid, thoughtful dive into the evolving debate surrounding the poppy in Canada — from Don Cherry's “you people” controversy to today's renewed discussion around Indigenous poppies in Canadian Armed Forces uniforms. As a veteran and former paramedic, Matthew reflects on the meaning of remembrance, the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers across generations, and why fragmenting the poppy into identity-based variations may risk dividing a symbol meant to unite us. This solo narration blends raw honesty, personal reflection, and respectful commentary on Canadian military tradition, Indigenous representation, and national remembrance culture.Whether you're a Canadian veteran, military family member, history-minded listener, or someone wrestling with modern identity politics and tradition, this episode of Unwritten Chapters invites you to pause, think, and remember what the poppy truly represents.PRE-ORDER the new book: https://www.indigo.ca/en-ca/trauma-and-tea-essays-on-trauma-recovery-and-growing-up-the-hard-way/9781777649210.html
Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...There are only 2 rules to this podcast. The book has to be found in a thrift shop and we are not allowed to talk about the book until we press record, which is sometimes agonising. We have lots of episodes coming up so if you find yourself enjoying our podcast, please be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear about each episode.

Betrayals and Blind Trusts: The Fall of Icons and Integrity Richard dives into two explosive stories of trust shattered and truths twisted. First, Richard welcomes Toronto Sun columnist Joe Warmington to unravel the bitter feud between Canadian hockey legend Don Cherry and his former Hockey Night in Canada colleague, Ron MacLean. Then, Richard speaks with Kris Sims from The Canadian Taxpayers Federation to discuss Ottawa's high-stakes drama, where Prime Minister Mark Carney's tangled web of corporate ties threatens to unravel his leadership. Slapped with a massive conflict-of-interest screen to curb his influence over 103 companies, including Brookfield and Stripe, Carney's claims of owning “nothing but cash and real estate” ring hollow. The NHL offseason came in hot, and we're breaking it all down: Don Cherry officially retires after 8 decades in the game and 313 podcast episodes. Matt Martin hangs ‘em up after 987 NHL games. Jonathan Toews returns, signing a bonus-laden deal with his hometown Jets. Mario Lemieux wants to buy back the Penguins. A brand-new CBA changes everything: 84-game season, no dress codes, playoff cap rules, and full-time EBUGs. Florida wins the Cup — Sam Bennett, Brad Marchand, and Aleksander Barkov dominate. Connor McDavid's comments stir the pot in Edmonton. A full breakdown of trades and free agent chaos — from Marner to Vegas to Brent Burns still going. Plus, we say goodbye to Bruins fan favorite Lyndon Byers. Subscribe and buckle up — hockey never sleeps.
Today, we're looking at Ron MacLean's latest betrayal of Canadian icon and former Coach's Corner cohost, Don Cherry. MacLean, still with CBC, asserted that Cherry's controversial “you people” rant was an exit strategy for the longtime hockey broadcaster — leading Cherry to refute the claim in an interview with the Toronto Sun's Joe Warmington. Plus, late last week Mark Carney's lengthy list of conflicts of interest was unveiled, with the prime minister having to recuse himself in business connected to over 100 companies. And finally, a new report is shining light on the Liberals' concerns that law-abiding firearms owners will not respect the government's efforts at gun grabbing.
