Because you were home. The Strangers is a 2008 American psychological horror film written and directed by Bryan Bertino. The film follows a couple (portrayed by Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman) whose stay at a vacation home is disrupted by three masked intruders (portrayed by Kip Weeks, Gemma Ward, and Laura Margolis) who infiltrate the home one night. It is the first installment in The Strangers film series. The screenplay was inspired by two real-life events: the multiple-homicide Manson family Tate murders and a series of break-ins that occurred in Bertino's neighborhood as a child. Some journalists noted similarities between the film and the Keddie cabin murders that occurred in Keddie, California, in 1981, though Bertino did not cite this as a reference.00:00 Intro17:18 Horror News 28:59 What We've Been Watching46:17 Film Review2:05:12 Name Game2:09:37 Film Rating2:13:56 OutroPodcast - https://podlink.to/horrorhangoutPatreon - https://www.patreon.com/horrorhangoutFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/horrorhangoutpodcastTwitter - https://twitter.com/horror_hangout_TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@horrorhangoutpodcastInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/horrorhangoutpodcast/Website - http://www.hawkandcleaver.comBen - https://twitter.com/ben_erringtonAndy - https://twitter.com/AndyCTWritesLucy - https://twitter.com/lucyjadebuglassAudio credit - Taj Eastonhttp://tajeaston.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/thehorrorhangout. Get ready to hide behind the sofa as we discuss the 2008 American physiological horror ‘The Strangers' starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman. The chilling story sees a couple facing three masked intruders to their vacation home. Lock your doors and tune in!
Released in 2008 and directed by Bryan Bertino, "The Strangers" is a spine-tingling home invasion thriller that has cemented its place as a classic in the horror genre. With an uncompromising commitment to building suspense, an eerie atmosphere, and the power of relentless simplicity, this film has stood the test of time and continues to terrify audiences more than a decade later. The film's premise is deceptively straightforward yet profoundly effective. It revolves around a young couple, Kristen (Liv Tyler) and James (Scott Speedman), who retreat to a secluded vacation home for the night. Their peaceful evening takes a nightmarish turn when they find themselves at the mercy of three masked intruders. The film's strength lies in its ability to wring suspense and terror from the simplest of elements, often leaving audiences on the edge of their seats. One of the most noteworthy aspects of "The Strangers" is the absence of a traditional musical score. This decision by the director, Bryan Bertino, adds an unsettling layer to the film's already tense atmosphere. The lack of music makes the audience acutely aware of every creak, every whisper, and every ominous sound within the house, enhancing the feeling of vulnerability and isolation. The masked intruders, with their eerie, expressionless visages, are unforgettable. Their motives and identities remain shrouded in mystery, adding to the pervasive dread that lingers throughout the film. As a result, "The Strangers" isn't just a typical home invasion thriller; it's a relentless game of cat and mouse that gets under your skin and refuses to let go. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman deliver powerful performances that are pivotal to the film's success. Their chemistry and emotional portrayals make it easy for the audience to connect with their characters, amplifying the terror as their world unravels around them. You genuinely feel their fear and desperation, which adds a layer of emotional depth to the film. "The Strangers" played a significant role in the resurgence of horror as a respected genre in the late 2000s. It inspired a new wave of home invasion horror films and influenced the way directors approached building suspense and terror. It was a milestone in Bryan Bertino's directorial career, marking his debut with a film that demonstrated his ability to create an atmosphere of relentless fear and dread. Over the years, "The Strangers" has achieved cult classic status. Fans have dissected every frame, developed intriguing theories, and quoted memorable lines. It remains a film that horror enthusiasts revisit time and again, finding new details and fears with each viewing. In conclusion, "The Strangers" is an unrelenting masterpiece of horror that still haunts us to this day. With its exceptional ability to generate fear and suspense from the simplest of elements, an iconic directorial debut, and performances that keep you invested, it's no wonder that it stands as a classic in the genre. If you have a penchant for spine-tingling, nerve-wracking horror, "The Strangers" is a must-watch, and it's a testament to the lasting power of this bone-chilling gem from 2008. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/100horrors/message

This week, the great Rebecca Sweeney joins us for a trip into the mind as we discuss 2009's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. An attempted return to form for Terry Gilliam after a rough decade, this film's production would be halted when Heath Ledger died halfway through filming, with Colin Farrell being one of several actors bought in to replace the star. We talk about the film's difficult production, other actors who were in the mix, and the muddled but interesting work that results. Along the way we're gonna look at Gilliam's complicated legacy, the form and fiunction of CGI in the immediate wake of Avatar, and knock out four separate, increasingly contentious Mt. Rushmores. Cole tells his Scott Speedman story. Connor almost watched Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. Rebecca is a recovering Johnny Depp stan. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Or click here for more information: Linktr.ee/BeatlesEarth --- The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960, that comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They are regarded as the most influential band of all timeand were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr all released solo albums in 1970. Their solo records sometimes involved one or more of the others; Starr's Ringo (1973) was the only album to include compositions and performances by all four ex-Beatles, albeit on separate songs. With Starr's participation, Harrison staged the Concert for Bangladesh in New York City in August 1971. Other than an unreleased jam session in 1974, later bootlegged as A Toot and a Snore in '74, Lennon and McCartney never recorded together again. Two double-LP sets of the Beatles' greatest hits, compiled by Klein, 1962–1966 and 1967–1970, were released in 1973, at first under the Apple Records imprint. Commonly known as the "Red Album" and "Blue Album", respectively, each has earned a Multi-Platinum certification in the US and a Platinum certification in the UK. Between 1976 and 1982, EMI/Capitol released a wave of compilation albums without input from the ex-Beatles, starting with the double-disc compilation Rock 'n' Roll Music. The only one to feature previously unreleased material was The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl (1977); the first officially issued concert recordings by the group, it contained selections from two shows they played during their 1964 and 1965 US tours. The music and enduring fame of the Beatles were commercially exploited in various other ways, again often outside their creative control. In April 1974, the musical John, Paul, George, Ringo ... and Bert, written by Willy Russell and featuring singer Barbara Dickson, opened in London. It included, with permission from Northern Songs, eleven Lennon-McCartney compositions and one by Harrison, "Here Comes the Sun". Displeased with the production's use of his song, Harrison withdrew his permission to use it.Later that year, the off-Broadway musical Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road opened. All This and World War II (1976) was an unorthodox nonfiction film that combined newsreel footage with covers of Beatles songs by performers ranging from Elton John and Keith Moon to the London Symphony Orchestra. The Broadway musical Beatlemania, an unauthorised nostalgia revue, opened in early 1977 and proved popular, spinning off five separate touring productions. In 1979, the band sued the producers, settling for several million dollars in damages. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978), a musical film starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton, was a commercial failure and an "artistic fiasco", according to Ingham. Accompanying the wave of Beatles nostalgia and persistent reunion rumours in the US during the 1970s, several entrepreneurs made public offers to the Beatles for a reunion concert.Promoter Bill Sargent first offered the Beatles $10 million for a reunion concert in 1974. He raised his offer to $30 million in January 1976 and then to $50 million the following month. On 24 April 1976, during a broadcast of Saturday Night Live, producer Lorne Michaels jokingly offered the Beatles $3,000 to reunite on the show. Lennon and McCartney were watching the live broadcast at Lennon's apartment at the Dakota in New York, which was within driving distance of the NBC studio where the show was being broadcast. The former bandmates briefly entertained the idea of going to the studio and surprising Michaels by accepting his offer, but decided not to. Ballentine was born in Toronto, Canada to parents Eva and Blake Ballentine. She is a graduate of the Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto.[5] She began her acting career as a child actor on the Toronto stage production of The Railway Children, directed by Damian Cruden (2011) for Mirvish Productions.[6] She went on to appear in other stage performances, including the lead role in Numbers, at the Toronto Fringe Festival(2013),[7][8] and as Little Cosette / Young Eponine[9] in the 25th Anniversary production of Les Misérables(2013), directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell for Mirvish Productions. Also in 2013, she was invited to the Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize for Nonfiction Gala as one of the performers to read from one of the five prize-nominated titles.[10] Her first TV role came in a Hallmark Channel movie, Baby's First Christmas (2012), in which she played Karen, a primary character with Casper Van Dienin a lead role.[11] She took on her first film role in Atom Egoyan's feature, The Captive (2013), an official selection for the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.[12]She went on to share the screen with Susan Sarandon, Gil Bellows and Christopher Heyerdahl, in The Calling. In her next larger TV movie role for Lifetime's Clara's Deadly Secret[13] (2013), she played Kate[13] alongside co-stars Emmanuelle Vaugier and Richard Ruccolo. In the 2015 feature film Standoff, Ballentine portrays one of the lead characters, Bird, a young girl who finds protection with an ex-soldier (played by Thomas Jane) from a hit-man (played by Laurence Fishburne). Although the movie received mixed reviews,[14] Rene S. Garcia, Jr. of Workingauthor.com wrote "And let's not forget Ella Ballentine. I typically have no faith in child actors, but Ella strikes the perfect tone with her burgeoning independence, but emotional and physical dependency." Eoin Friel from ActionElite felt that "Ella Ballentine almost steals the movie as Bird, the girl being pursued by Sade. The poor thing goes through an absolute nightmare and manages to never be the "annoying kid" in the film; she brings genuine heart to proceedings and is essential for Carter's redemption." In an interview on Collider, Jane stated "[Ella] was pretty wonderful. She was fun, too." Ballentine's next big role cast her as co-lead in writer/director Bryan Bertino's horror film, The Monster (2016) with co-stars Zoe Kazan, and Scott Speedman. The Monster became an independent success and Ella received Fangoria magazine's 2017 Fangoria Chainsaw Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. "If horror movie performances were given Oscars, [Kazan] would be a shoo-in. Same with Ballentine. These two are so believable," wrote Staci Layne Wilson in Dread Central.[18]Bloody Disgusting, an American horror genre website, called Ballentine "The Most Badass Horror Hero of 2016".[20] According to critics, in the horror movie, The Monster "the spooky-good Ella Ballentine"[21] came up as "a minor revelation." According to the Los Angeles Times' Justin Chang "Ballentine gives a fine, fierce performance as a child wise beyond her years and unafraid of confrontation",[23] and Matt Donato from We Got This Covered writes "Ballentine rolls with the punches well for an actress her age, and this shouldn't be understated". In 2016 Ballentine began her role as Anne Shirley in the three-part TV movie adaptation of the classic Canadian novel, Anne of Green Gables. L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables (2016) was the first instalment, followed by The Good Stars (2017),then Fire & Dew (2017). The other main characters were portrayed by Martin Sheen as Matthew Cuthbert and Sara Botsford as Marilla Cuthbert. Ballentine's performance again received critical success and landed her a Canadian Screen Award (2018). "Ballentine is charming as Anne," wrote Francesca Rudkin in the New Zealand Herald. Louise Keller in Urbancinefile states "[Ballentine] is outstanding. Wide-eyed and innocent, she proffers just the right amount of worldliness as the orphan who asks for just two things as she prays for the first time. That is a lovely scene." "I was absolutely delighted by actress Ella Ballentine's portrayal of Anne Shirley. She was a worthy Anne." wrote Sarah M. Miduski. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sheen says "I adore [Ella]...She's an extraordinary talent...She's remarkable. And she's very funny as well. We have great fun on the set and she's got a great sense of humor. She's a joy to work with." In 2019 Ballentine plays the lead, Jackie in Nicole Dorsey's Black Conflux (2019) with Ryan McDonald as her co-lead. Stephan Dalton of The Hollywood Reporter praised Ballentine's "luminous acting".

People are strange when you're a stranger. This week we review The Strangers. Why? Because we were home. Synopsis A young couple comes home late after a friend's wedding. Kristen, played by Liv Tyler, and James, played by Scott Speedman, appear distraught despite the obvious preparations for a romantic evening at home. We learn that their evening has been ruined by a failed proposal, and they awkwardly work their way through the fallout. In the midst of their relationship turmoil in the middle of the night, they receive a strange visitor looking for “Tamara”. They turn the teen girl away, but she soon returns. Eventually more Strangers in masks show up and torment the young couple with increasingly strange behavior. Review of The Strangers The Strangers is in a group of super nihilistic horror films that use lack of motive, message, and pretense to their advantage. The dread felt in this movie is strong, and is caused by the confusion and hopelessness of the protagonists' situation. The other feature of this story is that it is believable. The opening credits state that it is based on true events. Mainly that murderers exist and sometimes they target complete strangers for no reason. The film reminds me of original Last House on The Left, and Funny Games, mostly because they will all completely ruin your night. The film is well crafted and the suspense and tension is expertly increased over time. It's a very simple and uncomplicated premise delivered in a tight hour and 30 minutes. The ending is a gut punch and will stick with you. Score 8/10
