The New York Rangers are heading into the 2023/2024 season as one of the favorites to not only win the Metropolitan Division but to win the Eastern Conference. They had a very disappointing loss in round 1 to the New Jersey Devils in the NHL Playoffs last season. There were some changes in the franchise since the series loss. They fired head coach Gerard Gallant and hired Peter Laviolette in the summer. Some of the roster changes include the additions of Blake Wheeler, Nick Bonino and Erik Gustafsson. The Rangers also had a good draft, being able to select Gabe Perrault with the 23rd overall. Can this quick retool help the Rangers finally get back to the Stanley Cup Finals and win their first Cup since 1994? Now the team on the other side of the island, the New York Islanders, also had an underwhelming season. They finished their season 42-31-9 in the Metro Division before being booted out of the playoffs in round 1, falling to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 in the series. After acquiring and signing Bo Horvat to a long-term deal at the NHL Trade Deadline, the Islanders really didn't have a lot of cap space to make any major outside-the-organization signings. They were able to re-up on big-time pending unrestricted free agents Pierre Engvall, Iyla Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov to nice contracts. There are still moves that need to be made to get the Isles back under the cap ceiling. Are these deals going to be good enough to make the Islanders a legit threat in the Metro Division? This next team is definitely going to be a wild card, no pun intended. The Washington Capitals are coming off one of their worst seasons in a long time. They finished 35-37-10 and placed sixth in the Metro. Many writers and media heads are starting to think this Washington team may be getting ready to rebuild. Now the Capitals entered this summer firing the now-Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette and replaced him with Spencer Carbery. Carbery, who was a coach in the Washington farm system before, is taking over after a short stint as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Similarly to the Islanders' roster, the Capitals are really tight to the salary cap. Washington may be closer to a rebuild for that reason, specifically. The only moves that the Caps were able to make are signing free agent Max Pacioretty, who's coming off a major Achilles injury, and signing winger Tom Wilson to a six-year extension through 2030-2031. The Capitals also had a great first two rounds of the NHL Entry Draft, selecting Ryan Leonard at pick eight and Andrew Cristall at pick 40. Even if this team is a bit older right now, the Capitals are setting to make the rebuild or retool quick and easy.

Dan and Shawn are joined by NHL.com's Toronto-based staff writer Mike Zeisberger to talk all things Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning. Zeisberger went over reasons why this year looks and feels different, most notably the fact that their top players are coming through in the clutch and the additions of forwards Ryan O'Reilly and Noel Acciari before the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline are paying big dividends. In addition, the guys went around the rest of the playoffs, touching on each series. They offered reasons why the New Jersey Devils have come back from 2-0 and wonder if Gerard Gallant's criticism of the team was the right motivational tactic. They both don't like the Winnipeg Jets' chances of winning three straight against the Vegas Golden Knights, and neither expressed concern for the Colorado Avalanche despite being locked in a 2-2 series against the Seattle Kraken.

Steve Yzerman's vision for the future of the Detroit Red Wings took some major steps this week, with the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline culminating in the trade of Tyler Bertuzzi, Jakub Vrana, and Oskar Sundqvist (after already trading Filip Hronek and signing Dylan Larkin & Jake Walman earlier in the week). The only thing that didn't happen was the James Van Riemsdyk trade - JVR, you'll be missed in Motown. Tune in as we open by discussing the Tyler Bertuzzi trade to the Boston Bruins in exchange for a top-10 protected 2024 1st round pick & a 2025 4th round pick. We analyze the quality of the return, whether Bertuzzi was ever close to signing in Hockeytown before becoming a UFA, Dylan Larkin's emotional press conference right after the trade, Bertuzzi's impact in the room & on the ice, & more (4:20). Next, the Jakub Vrana saga ended as Yzerman traded him to St. Louis for a 7th round pick and McLaughlin. We explain why the Red Wings chose to move on Vrana, the reasons the return was so small, and wish Vrana well in a hopefully fresh new start (20:55). Finally, trading Oskar Sundqvist to the Minnesota Wild for a 4th round pick - the "Namestnikov Special" (26:12). We then take stock of the Red Wings' draft capital over the next few years, and assess whether the Yzerplan is on track, if spending on players like Copp, Perron, Husso, & Maatta last season was a mistake, whether Yzerman will use or trade those picks for key players, honest analysis on where the rebuild stands, & LOTS more (28:20). Finally, some quick notes on signings like Doucet & Letheman (Sebastian Cossa's teammate), Alex Nedeljkovic being recalled as Ville Husso was hurt, Yzerman's notes on Simon Edvinsson, Marco Kasper, Albert Johansson, Cross Hanas, Michael Rasmussen, Joe Veleno, Filip Zadina, & other young guns (54:15), Red Wings game recap & look ahead at the standings and Connor Bedard draft lottery (1:01:55), and a look at some more trades from across the NHL (1:07:35). All of that & plenty more before taking your questions during Overtime (1:17:35) - enjoy! It's been a bonkers week around the NHL, and the Sound Of Hockey welcomes Eddie Olczyk back this week to talk about it. With Edzo, who is checking in from Las Vegas, the guys talk about his whirlwind season, and he gives his thoughts on what has been going on in the lead-up to the NHL Trade Deadline. It's a fun convo. The interview is just a small piece of a supersized episode, though. John and Darren (no Andy this week) go deep into what has been happening with the Kraken and their expectations for what the team will do before Friday's deadline. After the Olczyk interview, the guys jump to a robust "Interesting or Carry On" to get through all of the big trades around the NHL. In one of the most insane NHL Trade Deadline leadups in NHL history, the Detroit Red Wings were a big part of the festivities: Larkin signing, Hronek traded, Walman extended, Bertuzzi, Vrana & others back on the market - CHAOS Tune in as we start by discussing Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin finally signing his new contract, keeping him in Hockey for 8 years at $8.7 million per season. How will this contract age with trade clauses, buyout options, and salary structure? Was this fair value, did Larkin take a discount, or did Steve Yzerman overpay? What does this mean for Detroit's future down the middle & in the overall rebuild? Enjoy our full contract breakdown as the wait to extend the Red Wings captain finally ends (6:45). Next, some earlier news that Jake Walman also signed a contract extension in Detroit - what does his 3 year, $3.4 million per year deal mean for his future, Detroit's flexibility to trade in the future, Moritz Seider's top line partner, Edvinsson, Johansson, & others (19:20) After a disastrous set of games against Ottawa, we break down how that affected Yzerman's decision-making surrounding the wild card playoff race (amidst a loaded Atlantic and Eastern conference) (27:40), which led into his blockbuster trade moving Filip Hronek to the Vancouver Canucks. We analyze who won the deal, how it compared to the return for Chychrun, whether Yzerman was selling high on Hronek or if the Canucks made a surprise offer, & the options Yzerman has with the New York Islanders' 1st round pick in 2013 (35:30). Next, a broader discussion on what's coming next for the Detroit Red Wings rebuild. Is Yzerman looking for a full breakdown & extension of the rebuild, or a quick reset in which he could pursue players like Parayko, Thomas, Kyrou, or others (45:45)? With Tyler Bertuzzi back on the trade block (especially after the Jeannot trade return), we analyze potential trade partners, returns, & options for him (56:00), as well as other likely trade candidates: Jakub Vrana, Filip Zadina, & even possibly the likes of Sundqvist, Suter, Perron, & others (1:09:40). In addition to discussion Detroit's NHL Trade Deadline possibilities, we take a quick look at the insane trades that have already taken place (1:21:25) & LOTS more before taking your questions during Overtime (1:29:00) - enjoy!
