FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Rev. Kendra Lovelace Balliet Organist: James Ross Prelude - Fughetta - Theodore Dubois Gathering at the Gate Welcome *Call to Worship (Based on John 20:19-23) Leader: In 12-step recovery programs, the first step is admitting powerlessness over anything that threatens to destroy our connection to our Higher Power, to ourselves, and to others. This week, we consider the variety of ways addiction occurs in our lives. We will celebrate the Good News that we can refocus our lives onto things that lead us to life and connection to the Holy. All: Rise up in us and we will rise from death into a newfound life: from bondage freed, from harm released, from illness healed, as one in peace. When all is lost our hearts are warmed, our hope restored, our lives transformed. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Leader: They trembled in fear behind locked doors as the sun set on that first Easter… People: We often do not perceive the most transformative possibilities of our lives because we are afraid — of change, of loss, afraid even of healing. Leader: Jesus broke through the barrier of their hiding place and stood among them… People: Even when we long for our burdens to be lifted, we become so accustomed to carrying them we cannot imagine being released from them. Leader: Jesus greeted them with the words: “Peace be with you.” People:: We sometimes find it difficult to embrace peace when our lives are in upheaval, when our hearts grieve, when our world aches. Leader: Knowing what they needed, Jesus extended his pierced palms and his stabbed side… People: What evidence do we require to believe our lives can experience resurrection from a power higher than our own? What helps us trust and believe? Leader: They rejoiced as they recognized their friend, their leader, their Solace and Redeemer… People: When we search for help and hope, do we rejoice when we see the first possibility of transformation? Do we rejoice along the way to healing? Leader: Again, Jesus offered his peace and said, as he was sent by God, he now sends them… People: Even in the midst of our own turmoil, can we find the courage to go where we are sent for healing for ourselves and to go where others are in need of our witness? Leader: Jesus breathed on them and said: “Receive the Holy Spirit.” People: The gift of Holy Spirit power is always with us and within us to lead and guide and sometimes cajole and awaken us to all the possibilities for renewed life. Leader: Jesus assured them: Forgive the sins of anyone, and they are forgiven, retain the sins of any and they are retained. All: We see in the example of Christ how to forgive others and how to release our own woundedness. We open ourselves to the freedom, release, and peace that comes through forgiveness. We forgive ourselves and we forgive others. Leader: This is a Word of Hope for the people who long for it. All: Thanks be to the Living Word. *Opening Hymn "Savior, Like A Shepherd Lead Us” #381 *Opening Prayer All: Living Word, whose love abides in us, you call us to love in truth and action. Give courage to our hearts so we may love your beloveds. Open our ears to the wisdom of those you send, who might otherwise be dismissed. Transform our charity into justice over all the earth. Amen. Confession of Faith: Apostle's Creed #881 Gloria Patri Children's Chat Music Ministry and Offertory - My Comfort by Day, My Song in the Night - Gilbert Martin Doxology and Prayer of Gratitude Proclaiming Release Scripture John 20:19-23 Sermon Series - Resurrection Stories Sermon - Released Responding to Release Joys/Concerns Hymn "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" #474 Pastoral Prayer/Lord's Prayer Closing Hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” #140 Unlocking Release Action Steps & Benediction Postlude - Psalm of Glory - Dorothy Wells The flowers on the altar today are given by Barb & Bill Baker in honor of their granddaughter, Reghan Radmore, on the occasion of her 21st birthday. Just before Jesus ascended to heaven he instructed his followers to wait in Jerusalem to receive “The Promise of the Father.” What was that promise? May God bless you as you engage in worship. Please feel free to leave feedback/comments to let us know you joined in worship. The traditional time for all of us to meet together is Sunday morning, but that may not have been the case for the early Christians... they actually met on what we would consider to be Saturday night.

205. John 20:19-23 Sent By The Son-Part 2 (1-15-23) Pastor Phil Ballmaier Calvary Chapel Elk Grove 1-15-23 Today we continue with Part 2 of "Sent By The Son", as we see the resurrected Jesus appear to His disciples. He walked with them, and talked with them, and reinforced all He had taught them. And now He was more fully equipping them, and all who would see Him in His resurrected body. Did you know that following His death and resurrection that Jesus stayed on the earth 40 more days? In this section of scripture we reach a turning point in all of our study of The Gospel of John as it is the monumental beginning of The New Covenant. It's the foundation for the beginning of The Holy Spirit's work in the life of these soon to be 'new testament believers'. The Holy Spirit was promised in John 14:16-17. The Great Commission was yet to come, but first, they must be empowered by the baptism of The Holy Spirit. True for them and all Christian believers to come. Let's join Pastor Phil for this exciting message... Calvary Chapel Elk Grove is a non-denominational fellowship located in Roselle, a northwest suburb of Chicago in Illinois. 204. John 20:19-23 Sent By The Son-Part 1 Pastor Phil Ballmaier Calvary Chapel Elk Grove 1-8-23 We continue focusing this morning on new beginnings, as the resurrected Jesus appears to His disciples. Can you put yourself in their shoes? One can only imagine how it felt when their eyes were opened when Jesus said, "Peace be with you." Up until that time Jesus had appeared to Mary at the tomb, and the men on the road to Emmaus, but today we see the disciples scared, and hiding away from the Jews, when suddenly Jesus appears in the room with them! Luke 24 gives an incredible and a bit more detailed parallel viewpoint of this moment. We also learn that, following His death, Jesus stayed on the earth for 40 more days, in His resurrected body to further equip and commission his disciples and all those He encountered. Leaving us a legacy to follow... In this section of scripture we reach a turning point in all of our study of The Gospel of John as it is the monumental beginning of The New Covenant. A New Beginning | 2023 203. John 20:19-23 New Year's Day 2023 Pastor Phil Ballmaier 1-1-23 As Pastor Phil opens up with this New Year's message, it seems only fitting to continue in the Gospel of John with the greatest of new beginnings — the disciples encountering the resurrected Christ! One can only imagine how it felt when their eyes were opened when Jesus said, "Peace be with you." Up until that time Jesus had appeared to the men on the Road to Emmaus as we saw last week, but today we see the disciples scared, and hiding away from the Jews, when suddenly Jesus appears in the room with them! Let's join Pastor Phil for this exciting message... In this New Year, may His grace, peace and mercy be ours as we seek to walk ever closer to Him, and impact the lives of those around us. New Day | New Year | New Hope "Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert." Scripture - John 20:19-23; Isaiah 58:8 When have you been traumatized? God has a purpose on the other side of the trauma.
Today is Easter Sunday. And Easter comes to people who are shaken, afraid, and have had their expectations turned upside down. Why? Because there is no place you can go that Jesus can't.

Jesus calls His followers to carry the torch of His ministry. In this powerful sermon Pastor Mike Ward explains the nature of incarnational ministry. He explained that it involves Christ followers embodying the message of Christ, embracing the resurrection of Christ, being empowered by the Holy Spirit and exercising the delegated authority of Christ.
In this Introduction to the book known as Acts, we see our promised Messiah ascending, after reminding His followers of the promise the Holy Spirit; followed by 2 angels promising His return.
